Chapter 13
After taking a seat with a tired groan, Tom let the glamour slip off and settled into in his chair. A smug smirk on his face, he was pleased with himself. In the scheme of what he was trying to accomplish with his ultimate goal, he hadn't managed anything, but when it came to immediate problems, he had.
First and foremost, he managed to get himself up to full speed when it came to Fudge helping Lucius mitigate what his son had pulled off. Despite warnings from plenty, Fudge was plowing on under a full head of steam. Well, he was about to derail that foolishness. He had met with three of the biggest donors Fudge had. Combined, those three more than surpassed what Lucius tossed into Fudge's coffers. And every single one of them was going to pull funding from Fudge if he didn't stop helping Lucius. In fact, they were meeting with the fool today to make that clear. It was perfect as far as he was concerned. He was sure that he would know the results of that meeting sometime later today, though he was positive that Fudge would finally get in step with what he wanted by the time it was over. Lucius didn't have enough clout to override what these three men could bring to Fudge's table. They were also going to start pushing his agenda in a way Lucius hadn't since the man was trying to be circumspect with what he did because of the speculation about his involvement in the last war. It was two birds with one stone and pleased him, greatly. Now, unlike what Albus might think, he had plenty in place in the Ministry in high ranking positions and didn't need to Imperious anyone to get them there. A few of those were not only in the DMLE proper, but the Aurors department and with the Hitwizards. Albus tended to focus on odd areas, something he kept feeding so he would continue to do so to throw him off. Keeping much a secret served him well and would in this mission too, in spades. The Wormtail issue was about to find a resolution. At the moment, he was in the hands of two in the Hitwizard department who were going to sit on him for a couple more days. Two days was how long it was going to take for the spells the three of them used to modify his memory and make sure nothing anyone did could bring them back, no matter what. There was also some memory modification along with it. He rightly didn't give a damn if the pathetic coward talked about him being back. Anything he said on the matter was likely to end up buried or covered up by puppets of Fudge, if it was believed at all. What he didn't want was some of what the rat knew coming out. It was those memories he either erased or modified to make Wormtail's crimes look worse. While in the scheme of things Sirius being cleared wouldn't help much now, it may in the future and it could give them leverage in plenty of areas, especially when it came to Albus. That old goat—his schemes were plenty bad when it came to this nightmare. He was also sure this bonding wouldn't derail any of them. Sirius being cleared could put him in a position to protect Harry, and him by default. They would probably need such help at some point, especially him. It also meant he had to keep some areas quiet for as long as possible, especially proof that he was back. The longer he could stay hidden the better, as he would have plenty in place to take on anything Albus might try with him. At this juncture, that was paramount to most other areas. With a tired groan, he let his chair drop back and crossed his legs, clasping his hands. As he stared at the desk, his mind was working over the mess. While part of it, having Harry, was a boon in a way he couldn't have ever counted on, a large portion was a nightmare that he wasn't sure what to do with. And he didn't mean when it came to the bond. What it came down to was something he always knew when it came to his followers; most would sing so loud they would end up without a voice if the motivation was right. After all, they had done all they could to mitigate their involvement in the last war to avoid punishment over it. And Lucius was at the top of the list.Lucius—Lucius was a problem. While he hadn't talked to the arrogant aristocrat yet, he knew Lucius well enough to know what might be coming from this nightmare. It took no great leap of logic to figure out that if the full weight of the Ministry went after Draco, that Lucius might end up turning on him to get a lighter sentence for his son, despite what it might mean for him personally when it came to retribution. No, he hadn’t done that in the last war, but Draco wasn't under a direct threat then. All this meant was he might need to prepare for that now or take steps to ensure that Lucius wouldn't talk. After a few moments of contemplation, he decided he needed to employ both. To tend to such a task would require more than just him taking it on. He needed more people. And he knew just who to employ. With a feral grin, he decided he needed to get with Bella, her husband and brother-in-law, not to mention a few others that he had broken out of Azkaban. None of them were happy with Lucius' wiggling to get out of punishment after the last war and would be more than pleased to make sure he didn't start singing now, despite familial relations. He wanted and needed them to take it on. Well, help him take it on, that was. Because he was going to drive the point home to Lucius in no uncertain terms that he was not only to let Draco take responsibility for his actions, but also that if he even entertained the thought of going to the Ministry with what he knew that there were fates worse than death in this world. With what Lucius knew of him, he would realize that wasn't an idle threat. After a heavy sigh, feeling that tiredness once more wash over him, growing again, he decided it was time to not only get something to wake himself up, but check on what was going on with the other two. It was paramount he keep on top of anything Sirius was up to as he was unpredictable on a good day. Harry was too, though he wasn't the concern right now. When he was in a better place, he would have to focus there as well.Once he glanced around his desk, making a mental note to get on most of what was there after perking up, he stood with a loud groan. For once, since this whole nightmare started, he would be pleased to bring good news to Black. Though it wasn't on this nightmarish bond, it was in another area the man would like. Besides, he had procured what Sirius asked for when it came to Muggle soft drinks, having braved a town not far from here to get those and some other items he thought Black could entice Harry into either eating or drinking. The faster Harry was in a better place, the better off all of them, but especially him, would be.As he walked out, he wondered about the feeling that came when he thought about taking the news to Black. It was a pleased feeling, like he was doing something for Black, something that would make the man happy, not because it helped him tremendously. That was odd and he would have to think on it more. It was just another area he would look into and see where it was coming from.
“Any change at all?” Tom asked as he took a seat by Sirius. Black and Harry were outside on the patio. From what he could see, Sirius was once more going through the multitude of books they had on this mess while, as normal by now, Harry was sleeping. Nagini was curled up on top of the young wizard, hissing softly.
“Some,” Sirius told him, tossing the quill on the table where the books were stacked. “It's not much, but a little. The appetite stimulator worked a tad. He ate more than he has since this started. It wasn't up to a normal full meal, but more. It can only help. And I got him a bit more awake than I have managed and talking some. It wasn't about what's bugging him, but he was talking. I call that an improvement.”“Good,” Tom nodded. With a sigh, he got comfortable then imparted, “I picked up the Muggle drink you requested. While tending to that chore, I took it upon myself to also pick up some Muggle junk food, as they call it, for him. It was my thought that they might entice him into eating more. While they're like our sweets and other snacks, being not at all healthy for you, anything at this juncture is good.”“Have the elves take them to our room and let me see what I can manage when getting him to eat them,” Sirius told him, pleased with that suggestion. Then he added, “Maybe, if you can, get a hold of some of ours as well. I know he likes chocolate.”“That's easy and I'll take care of it,” Tom nodded. As it only took an owl to get a standing order for plenty, he would do just that. The faster Harry came around and was more functional, the better off they would all be in this nightmare, especially him with all he had to tend to. “Also, when you get a chance, call the elf in charge of the kitchen then give the creature a rundown of Harry's favorite foods. They can take on the task of ensuring he gets those for meals. It might entice him into eating more.”“I'll do that as well,” Sirius nodded, appreciating the suggestion. He also planned to have the elves serve up smaller portions for Harry. One of the bits he noticed was that Harry seemed overwhelmed looking at the normal sized meals, something that didn't help. Anything that might assist with this mess was something he was going to try.“I do have a tidbit of good news,” Tom said, looking smug. Then he imparted what he had done, without details, about the Wormtail situation. “In two days time, a couple contacts of mine will have him in the custody of Hitwizards. They will ensure that he gets into the right hands then make it clear he committed the crime you were sent to prison for.”Ears perking up at that, Sirius looked at him then nodded slowly. “Any shot at making sure I'm cleared?” Oh, that he wanted and it would give him plenty of leverage in many ways.“I plan to ensure it,” Tom told him.For the first time Sirius really grinned, pleased. “Good!” While he was damned sure the evil arse had his own reasons for doing what he had, the fact that Peter would end up where he belonged made him happy. It was about damned time.“Normally, I would tell you to get a Solicitor to tend to this mess and ream the Ministry over what happened, but that’s not possible. Let me see what I can manage behind the scenes for compensation. Plenty may want it to go through quietly as they wouldn't want someone in there howling over what happened,” Tom told him softly, eyes drifting to Harry who was stirring a little.“I don't give a shite about compensation,” Sirius told him bluntly. “Just so I'm cleared.”“I assumed, but let me see what I can manage.” Tom told him, not exactly sure why he would push for that, though. As Harry seemed like he was waking, Sirius put a hand on his godson's head and rubbed it. When his eyes opened, he smiled. Good. He always felt better when Harry was awake. “Hey, Harry,” he said softly, hand still on his head. When Harry sat up, Tom nodded to him then said, “I'm going to tend to some matters. If you need anything, send an elf.” Then he stood and swept into the house.“Arse,” Sirius snorted, but smiled a bit at Harry as he leaned against him after sitting up. “We have something for you.” Calling an elf, he had the creature bring Harry one of the soft drinks and some of the snacks. When the elf popped back up with the food, he sat it on the table and pushed it towards Harry. “I mentioned I thought you would like some of it.”With a shaky hand, Harry picked up the Coke and opened it. Taking a sip, he smiled just a tad. “That's good,” he admitted then took another swallow. Spying a Mars bar, he snagged it then tore it open, taking a bite. “I haven't had one of these for a long time,” he said, reaching down to stroke Nagini's head when she slithered into his lap.As he watched Harry slowly eat the chocolate bar, Sirius smiled bigger. Tom had done good there as Harry looked to finish the sweet, something he hadn't done much with anything else since this mess started. “Would you like something else to go along with the choccy or not?” He asked, though was sure the answer.“This is good,” Harry nodded as he finished the Mars bar then sipped his Coke, leaning against Sirius.“Tom bought you the chocolate and drink,” Nagini told Harry as she slithered onto his shoulders. “Sirius mentioned the Coke, I believe it's called, but Tom picked up the sweets.” She was pleased as the small gifts seemed to bring Harry some kind of pleasure. It wasn't much, but it was there.“Really?” Harry asked, translating what was said to Sirius, looking at him for confirmation.“He did,” Sirius assured him softly, giving him a squeeze. Though Harry still looked plenty tired and drawn, like he could easily go back to sleep, the fact he took an interest in something, even if it was small, was a good sign and it pleased him to no end.“Remind me to thank him,” Harry mumbled, reaching up to rubbing his eyes.“He picked you up several bits like that,” Sirius told him honestly. “As long as you eat some real food, I don't see the harm in having something you like. So, enjoy.”Though Harry nodded, he said nothing, petting Nagini as she talked to him softly. Not sure how to press on from here, Sirius thought it over then asked, “Anything you'd like to do? Besides sleep that is. We can stay out here or move inside and listen to the Wireless. That or find a parlor to hole up in and get the fire going good. Sit in the library. Anything you like, Harry.” Then he added, quietly, “I'd like to talk to you for a while. Nothing else, just talk. We've not managed to talk about whatever in a few days and I miss it. Nothing serious, I promise, just shooting the shite.”Nagini was hissing encouragement in his ear, urging him to pick something besides sleeping. After a nod to let both of them know he heard, Harry tried to decide. It wasn't as easy as normal since his thought process seemed sluggish, but he was trying. After a couple minutes of pondering it, Harry sighed then told Sirius, “Can we go to the rec room and listen to some music? Not guaranteeing I'll stay awake to talk, but I can try.”“We'll do that,” Sirius grinned. Quickly standing, he summoned an elf to move everything he was working on into the rec room. It was the first time since Harry started sleeping all the time he had managed to get him to do something of this nature, so he would press for all he could while Harry remained awake. After ensuring Nagini managed to get off his godson's shoulders safely then watched her head towards the house, Sirius helped Harry to his feet and began guiding him that way, talking softly as he did. This showed real improvement. Good! It just meant he had to keep pressing on, nothing more. He could do that, easily.
With a tired groan, Remus took a sip from the cup of the tea at his elbow. Though it was in the early afternoon, he was exhausted. Since early that morning after talking to Albus and Severus, Remus had been at his house, with plenty of others, pouring over books on that bomb and the bond created by it. While they were finding plenty on the bomb, and its supposed effects, the bond was the issue.
After Albus had explained to all of them what Severus' task was, and the possible reason behind it, he had recruited everyone he could to help as there were a ton of books to go through on the topic. It was all their hopes that they could find something that could not only help Sirius, but give him an advantage that would keep him and Harry safe. As that was the goal, though Severus would be passing the information though He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, he found no shortage of people willing to help. Molly had been on the top of the list.A glance to his left made him smile. Molly was diligently pouring through one of the tomes Albus had passed along to them. Though it had been many a year since she had done research, she was first in line to volunteer and had been here since he started. Bill was on one side of her, doing the same. Fleur was beside him. They were the three that had been here the longest. Others, like Alastor, were coming and going as their schedules allowed. So, he had plenty of help and didn't have to go this alone. While Albus explained that those in the castle he could recruit for the job would take on what they could, as they had other duties, the bulk of it would fall to the rest of them. That was fine, he had no problems taking on the major portion of the research.Once he tossed aside another book that only seemed to cover the bomb itself, with some of the lore of what it could do, nothing helpful, he asked, tone weary, “Is anyone finding much of anything on the bond this was supposed to create? Other than the romanticized bunk?”“I've come across a few bits and bobs I marked, but it's mostly on the bomb and that supposed connection,” Molly admitted with a shake of her head. “Even that is more the lore on it.”“It's the same on our end,” Bill admitted with a tried sigh. “Neither of us have found anything at all helpful. The only parts that we're finding are standard with almost all other bonds. Anyone with more intelligence than a flobberworm would be able to figure out these parts.”“Which means we need to keep digging. Also, that we might need to go about it another way,” Remus told them, looking at the stack of books they still had to search through.“I think it means we need to go about this a different way,” Molly sighed, eying the stack of books herself.“Mum is right, I think,” Bill added, leaning back with a groan, starting to sip at a fresh cup of tea. “While we might need to keep looking into this bomb, we might want to tackle bonds. The topic of bonds is broad, I get that, but we can easily narrow it down.”“I'll send that suggestion on to Albus,” Remus told him, making a note of it. “He might know where to look. I'll also say something to Alastor. While his area is more defense, he may have some suggestions where we can look to find more. Well, without appearing that we are looking, that is.” He added with a sigh and shake of his head.“Did Albus mention if there was any news at all on poor Harry and Sirius? Aside from what Severus came across with, that is. Any hints where they are?” Molly asked, levitating a tray of snacks onto the table for all of them.“Nothing,” Remus admitted, taking one of the cakes. “Even what came from Severus is an educated guess. He's sure the other side of this mess has the two, but can't prove it. No one, even the DMLE, can find signs of Harry. Sirius' name is being kept out of it, of course, but there's nothing. From what he told me, the teachers are trying to find spells to track them. So far, nothing they've come up with has worked. It's his suspicion that there are spells up around where they are being kept to negate any means of tracking. They're still trying, though. Albus is hopeful that they will either find a spell that can give them a hint or something else will come out that will give us somewhere to look, either one.”“Even if we find clues, if You-Know-Who has Harry and Sirius, we won't get them away. Even without that bond, we wouldn't be able to manage,” Bill sighed, looking between the two. “With that bond in place, there is no chance.”“I think—well, you're right,” Remus admitted, looking dejected. “The goal may be giving Sirius all the information we can manage so he can protect the two of them then, maybe, do something that can help us. I don't know. If it's as Albus says, and Sirius is the one with true compatible magic, he's the dominant one in the relationship, well, so to speak anyway. If he is and we get him information that he can use, he might, maybe, be able to give us some kind of help in ending this mess. Either that or find a way to put a leash on the worst of what's going on. One of the two.”“I don't suppose we thought of that,” Molly admitted softly. “We've been more focused on finding a way to get him and poor Harry out of the mess.”“Mum, I doubt there's a way to get them away from He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named,” Bill told her softly. “If it is a bond, I doubt there's any way to break it. The best we might be able to manage is to just help Sirius all we can to stop the worst.”“And give him tools he can use to keep both of them safe and the worst from coming to pass,” Remus added. Then he smiled just a tad before saying, “Sirius is a crafty one, keep that in mind. Before him, no one had ever broken out of Azkaban. If he can manage that feat, who knows what else he can do if we can give him much needed information. Well, and get plenty we can all use from him if we can manage to find a way that's safe. He also needs plenty to keep what the two of them know from that side of the mess. So, it can help in more than just gathering information. Lives may depend on it. We need to keep that in mind as we search.”“No, I didn't think about it from that point of view,” Molly admitted, looking determined. “Right, we need to get on this. The more we can find, the better all of us may be.”With renewed vigor, Remus grabbed the next book on the stack closest to him and delved in. While he started searching for the topic at hand, he sent out silent encouragement to Sirius to stay strong until they could get him something he could use. Then he hoped that Sirius would hold true to form and dig his heels in. If he did that, he could keep Voldemort running in circles until they could do something to help him. And if there was anyone capable of that, it was Sirius.
