Chapter 13
"Well, it seems the papers had finally gotten a hold of your story," Hermione said, placing the Daily Prophet down on the table.
Sirius, who was sitting on the floor playing blocks with Eridanus, looked up. "What did they say?"
"The usual tripe," Hermione said with an eye roll. "You've miraculously returned from the dead, suspected dark magic… blah blah blah. People still think you're a Death Eater even though you've been cleared of all charges." She sighed. "People are so ignorant."
"They are, but don't let it bother you," Sirius said. He helped Eridanus place one block on top of another.
"But doesn't it bother you?" Hermione questioned.
"Nope," Sirius said with a shrug. "I could care less what the wizarding world thinks of me. The people I love know the truth and that's all that matters."
Hermione smiled. "I love you."
He flashed her a grin. "I love you too. How has your project been going?"
"Good. I've actually taken on an intern."
Sirius arched his eyebrow. "Really?"
"Yeah, I figured it'd be good to have someone help organize the research. Her name is Melissa. She graduated with pretty good N.E.W.T. scores from Hogwarts last year. She was in Hufflepuff."
"Clean record?"
"Of course," Hermione said. "Do you think I'd take someone on without really checking their information?"
Sirius shook his head. "No, I suppose not."
"And you? How has your first week at the Auror's office been?"
"Good. It's weird to see someone of the people I knew from my younger days. I've been welcomed in with open arms which I'm sure is because of Harry and Kingsley."
"That's good. Have you been assigned a case?"
"Today, actually," Sirius said. "I've been mostly doing paperwork but today I got my first mission. It's a small one, of course, but I'm excited to get back into the field."
"What's it for?"
"Well, someone's been breaking into joke shops. First Zonks, then Weasleys Wizard Wheezes. They think the two are related so I've begin my investigation tomorrow."
Hermione tried not to laugh. "It's sounds very nice."
Sirius, picking up on her sarcasm, rolled his eyes. "Make fun all you want, I'm excited. Besides, I love visiting joke shops."
"I know. You used to be such a prankster, didn't you?"
Sirius nodded. "I think if we had lived in a world without Voldemort, the four of us would have opened a joke shop. We were always playing pranks and doing the silliest things during our childhood."
Hermione smiled at him. "There's always time."
He shook his head. "No… I just couldn't. It wouldn't be the same without James or Peter. Back then, it was like we were brothers. I still don't understand how Peter could have-"
"Let's not talk about him," Hermione said, quickly changing the subject. She knew it still pained Sirius even after all this time.
"Right. Why don't I go back dinner?" He stood. "Sorry little man, I got to go make food. We'll play later, okay?"
Eridanus pouted, but nodded his little head. "Bye, daddy."
Hermione smiled, scooping Eridanus into her arms. "Why don't we put you down for a short nap?" She gave Sirius a quick kiss. "I'll be in to help with you with dinner in a few minutes. I'm going to put him down so he doesn't end up falling asleep too early."
"Because then he'll be up at the crack of dawn?"
Hermione laughed, nodding. "And we don't want that. I'll be down in a few." She disappeared up the stairs.
Sirius moved into the kitchen. Usually Harry or Ginny made dinner but they were both working late today. So he decided he would cook. He started to peruse the cabinets, trying to figure out what to make.
"Need any help?" Hermione asked, startling him.
"I don't know what to make," Sirius admitted.
"Well, there's some chicken. We could do that with some roast potatoes and corn?" Hermione suggested.
Sirius nodded. "That sounds good. I'll do the chicken and you can do the potatoes?"
Hermione smiled. "Sounds good, dear."
As Sirius began to prepare the chicken, Hermione started to cut the potatoes. The two of them moved in sync as they prepared dinner together.
"Wow, something smells good," Ginny said as she entered the door. Walking into the kitchen, she saw Sirius and Hermione setting the table. "You both cooked dinner?"
"Yes," Hermione said, grinning at Sirius.
"You like your first time as a domestic couple?" Ginny inquired.
Sirius laughed. "Domestic? I don't think so. We were just cooking dinner."
"And that's how it starts," Harry said, entering the kitchen. "Next you'll be doing the laundry."
Sirius looked horrified. "Of course not, that's…" he trailed off when he noticed Hermione's glare.
"That's what?" Hermione questioned.
"Er, nothing. Why don't I wake Eridanus?"
"Women's work?" Hermione inquired. "If that's what you think, Sirius Black, I think you and I need to have a long conversation about what women do in the-"
Sirius drowned her out, leaving the room. He went upstairs so he could wake Eridanus.
Hermione laughed once he stepped outside. Harry and Ginny joined in a few minutes later.
"Wonder how long it'll take for him to realize you were just kidding," Harry said with a chuckle.
Hermione smiled mischievously. "We'll see."
"You just love teasing him, don't you?" Ginny questioned.
"Of course I do," Hermione replied. "But dinner is ready. Why don't we all take a seat?"
Sirius appeared a few minutes later with a sleepy Eridanus in his arms. "Poor boy didn't want to get up."
"He'll wake up more when he sees the yummy food Mummy has made him." Hermione placed some food onto the tray of his hair chair. Eridanus squealed, digging his grubby little hands into the food.
"He's so happy," Ginny commented, watching in awe.
Sirius sat down next to Hermione. "We did well with dinner."
Hermione kissed him. "Yes, we did. I quite liked cooking with you." The two of them kissed again.
Harry cleared his throat. "Well, that's all good for you both, but I think I want to eat dinner."
Hermione laughed. "Sorry, Harry," she said, blushing. The five of them ate their dinner, laughing happily the entire time.
