Chapter 13
Eddie stayed out of sight when he encountered Severus and Sirius so he didn’t disturb them. As he watched, he smiled at what he saw. The two were kissing. Though it wasn’t the overly passionate sort, it was obvious the two adored it and showed plenty of affection. Normally, he would float off and wait for them to finish, but he did need to talk to them. Red was off retrieving the Librarian then going to talk to the Mad Monk about what they overheard. Since they were preparing to help, the two had to know what they overheard then for him to talk to them. In this case, he would just wait.
When the two parted and looked like they were going to resume the journey down to where Harry was waiting, he floated out from where he was waiting and cleared his throat. After the two focused on him, asking if there was a problem with Harry, he held up his hand then assured them, “Nothing to worry about when it comes to Harry. The Blue Lady is sitting with him. She wants to get to know him.”“Another ghost?” Severus asked, assuming.“Oh yes,” Eddie told him with a smile. “She’ll enjoy your Harry and he her. We all think the two will get along famously.”Then a serious expression slid across his face and he explained what they overheard before. When he finished, he said, “We just want some details so we can help. Red is retrieving the Librarian so she can gather the information she needs to start looking into the matter. She will then go talk to the other ghost in the house. He might know more as he’s better acquainted with the darker aspects of magic than we are.”“What do you want to know?” Sirius asked, motioning the other two to follow him into their bedroom. As this would end up a drawn out explanation, he wanted to relax slightly while they talked.“As much information as you can give us,” Eddie told him, floating in behind Severus. “The more you can impart, the better we’ll be able to help.” When the two took a seat, summoning an elf for a drink, he added, “The history—not sure if it’s needed, unless you think it’s relevant.” Then he added, tone hushed and voice lowered, “That—nastiness isn’t disturbing or bothering poor Harry, is it?”“We have the effects stopped,” Severus assured him. He then explained about the Occlumency. “It has it blocked for now. He’s quite accomplished at it, so he’s not bothered. We knew of some effects which happened before I taught him. Since then he’s not been bothered by any of what he was before. We just need it out, for obvious reasons.”“Completely understandable,” Eddie told him with a vigorous nod. “It needs removed, post haste. Do you know where it came from and how it ended up in his scar?”“The night his parents died,” Sirius sighed, shaking his head sadly. Then he walked Eddie through what they knew and what they had figured out on their own.“We’re of the opinion, as is Albus, that the Dark Lord doesn’t know he made Harry a Horcrux,” Severus then added. “If he was, he would have used it to his advantage more than he has. He tried last year using the connection for his own purposes, but it failed because we were able to block the effects. However, we’re not sure he won’t discover it at some point. The other part we don’t know is if he still can if he discovers what the connection really is. It concerns us more than my Dark Mark.”“Yes, I can see why,” Eddie told him gravely, looking up when the Librarian floated in. “We’ll do all we can to help, you have my word.”The Librarian motioned the elf who had been helping her forward then had the creature hand the two men a list of spells she wanted performed. “These are just the ones I found quickly when I was told of the issue. I’ll probably find a few more as I keep looking. They will give me the basic information I need to start.” When the two nodded as they looked them over, she added, “Tell me what all you know of the Horcrux, including any readings you have on it. This way I won’t worry about some areas and can press on.”“We’ll give you all we can,” Severus assured her as he looked over what was on the list. None of these were taxing and Harry wouldn’t end up disturbed by them. Plus, help was what they needed and he was grateful to have any kind as they were getting nowhere with this area. If the ghosts wanted to help and had resources they didn’t, he would let them do what they wanted when it came to hunting for a solution.
Severus snorted when he walked into the parlor Harry was waiting in for them. It was not only jammed with furniture of all kinds, but it appeared the carpeting and wall treatments had arrived as well, so it was packed. Harry was looking over several of the items of furniture with a lady ghost floating by him. “You weren’t joking when you told me you thought there was enough here for the whole house, Black,” he said, sounding completely amused. However, he was quite pleased with all he saw. Indeed, the two had found many wonderful pieces which would fit in with the scheme they had picked for the house.
“Told you,” Sirius grinned after Harry introduced the ghost. Then he wandered over and looked at all which had arrived to make sure it was correct. “We also have our work cut out for us it looks like.”“The elves can take on most of the carpet and wall treatments,” Severus told him, joining Sirius to ensure it was what they wanted. “I want the bedroom done tonight if at all possible.”“We can set the elves on the floor and walls while we pick out the furniture from what we found. Harry and I have an idea of what we want, but need you to agree,” Sirius chuckled, nudging Harry. “And to come up with something for Harry’s new pets.”With a groan, Severus shook his head then sighed, “What deranged furnishings did you two find? I get final approval. And what pets?” He didn’t expect an issue with either, but wanted to know.“The furniture is great, telling you now, Severus,” Sirius told him with a winning grin. “You’ll love it! And Harry now has a massive amount of Puffskeins. We found plenty. I thought we could set up something for them in the bedroom and use them in the other rooms for pest control. Let them nosh to their heart’s content on whatever. We’ll just put tracking charms on them so we know where they are for Harry.” Then he summoned the enormous basket of the puff balls.“That is a large collection of them,” Severus said eying all the creatures. “Not to mention odd colored.” With a snort, he shook his head then said, “Well find a way to corral them, no problem. Let’s set the elves on what we need then go with working on the furniture.”“It’s going to take time, the furniture that is, as some need a bit of repair,” Harry chimed in moving over by the two, and leaning against Sirius, who slipped an arm around him. “They said it won’t take that long. The same with changing out fabrics.”“Not an issue for the elves,” Severus told him distractedly as he looked through the furniture stacked all over. He was quite pleased with all he saw. “Right,” he then asked, straightening up, “did you have this in some sort of order, like which rooms it would go in or do we need to sort?”“We made sure to set the items we thought for the bedroom to one side,” Sirius told him, putting a hand on his shoulder and moving him to where that stack was while guiding Harry along, arm still around him. “You’ll love it, my word. Nothing strange. We even found more of the fixtures like we wanted. Those we can use elsewhere because we found a very Gothic style we love for the bedroom. You’ll agree, I swear.”“Good,” Severus nodded, allowing Sirius to guide him along. “Wall fixtures aren’t an issue, as long as they match.”“They do and you’ll love them,” Sirius assured him. Then he began describing what they found and how they liked it. He was certain Severus would as well. Once they finished looking everything over, they could set the elves on what they had to do then press on with other areas.
As their boys went to work on directing the elves and sorting the furniture, the Blue Lady floated over to Eddie and watched, smiling slightly. In a soft voice, she told him, “You and Red were correct; Harry is a good lad. Very nice. I think the two of us will get along famously.”
“We thought so,” Eddie told her with a smile. “You do work ever so well with the younger ones. With what I know of his family life from the little I’ve managed to glean from them, he’s not had an easy life. Piling on the rest—well, I think your type of attention is something he needs. He has Severus and Sirius, both of whom adore him, but no real mother figure in his life. They told me a good friend of Sirius’, a man, had taken on the parental-type role in his life. We all know a feminine touch is needed as well. You do very well with those kind.”“Did it go well?” He then asked her, watching their boys work, still pleased at how well they seemed to work together and managed to pull together what they wanted with a minimum of fuss.“Very well,” she nodded, smiling still as she watched them. “It’s just the first meeting, of course, so we didn’t talk about more than the basics, but I liked it. He was quite nice about everything, talking respectfully without the attitude so many have. I think I’ll spend a little time with him every day to see where it leads. After a few, I’ll do what I can, making sure he knows what we discuss stays between us. Then I’ll set up what we used to with other children; a signal so we’re left alone if he needs to talk about personal areas.”“Just let us know,” Eddie told her with a nod. “Sirius did say if Harry needs to talk for him to write to his friend, Remus. This would probably work far better for the lad than trying to put it all down in a letter. Besides, I do think the three are worried about the letters being found since they’re hiding. A justifiable concern.”“Oh yes,” she agreed. “I’ll do what I can, but it’ll take time. Never fear, I’ll manage in the end.”Eyes still locked on their boys, the Blue Lady couldn’t help but laugh softly when Severus huffed then began to chide Sirius about the man groping him. “They are ever so good together. Slightly strange in the personality, but they fit.”“Very well,” Eddie agreed, chuckling at Sirius’ antics softly, smiling as Severus once more reminded the snickering Harry not to allow himself to end up influenced by Sirius’ bad behavior. “From what I’ve observed, this is rather normal behavior for them. And they like it, despite Severus’ compulsion to huff over some of it.”“He enjoys it, from what I can see,” the Blue Lady told him, still smiling.“He does,” Eddie agreed. The three were odd, but they were good for each other. In the end, it was all that mattered.
An intent look on the Mad Monk’s face as he listened to what Red explained, the man then nodded gravely when she finished. “Let me go speak vid the Librarian. Der are areas I know can help. De Horcrux is someding I know a vittle about.” He assured her in his thick Russian accent.
“We thought you might,” Red nodded. “Any little bit will be a big assist for them. As Eddie said; it’s something we want removed, post haste.”“Also, if you could, Severus’ Dark Mark, as he calls it,” she then continued. “It is another urgent matter he needs attended to. From what Eddie told us, the summons from it was quite painful for him. You know much about such areas. We know it’s a bond of some sort, but that’s all.”“I vill help,” the Mad Monk assured her. “She has some on the bond already?”“Yes, though not much,” Red sighed, shaking her head. “There are many bonds. Maybe you can help her narrow down which one. She has numerous readings on the mark she had Severus run and he had plenty more due to his quest to remove it.”“Dis vill help,” he nodded. “I vill assist all I can.”“All we can ask,” she told him with a smile.“The Blue Lady revealed herself,” she then told him softly. “From what I can gather, she does like Harry. I think you and Sirius will get along famously. Maybe it’s time you talked to him? He is a prankster and likes having fun. I’m sure he’d enjoy some of your stories and your exploits.”“Dis—da, it may be time,” the monk told her with a nod after thinking it over. “I vill talk to him soon, da. Let me help de Librarian den decide from dere.”“The one who visits—have you talked with her?” She then asked, knowing he spent most of yesterday out of the house.“Da,” he told her. “She vill do vat she can to help. Her contacts are in plenty of places. It is almost time for de Headless Hunt as vell. Since dey go to Hoggywarts to meet up, she says she can gather information vile dere. Sir Nicolas is bound to know plenty since he is ze head ov Gryffindor. She is persuasive, as you know, so vill manage some. Give her time.”“I didn’t think about the hunt,” Red told him with a smile. Then, shaking her head, though still smiling, she agreed, “Oh, she can persuade anyone of anything if she puts her mind to it. The more information the better, though.”“She vill report in vhen she knows someding,” he assured her. “Besides, she is most curious about our boys, so vill visit to see dem.”“More of her stunts,” Red sighed, fighting the urge to roll her eyes. “And she will have to make her normal grand entrance to introduce herself. Even after all these years, she must be the center of attention!”“Of course,” he said with a manic grin. “You vill get to huff at her, someding vich pleases you as vell.”“We cannot let such a spectacle go unnoticed,” Red sighed, shaking her head. Then, straightening up, she told him, “Go help. I have some other areas to attend to. Let our boys work on the furnishings they found and decorating while we tend to the research. It will speed things along.”“Vill do,” the monk nodded then headed towards the library to help all he could.Pleased it was going well, Red vanished through the wall in the other direction to check on some areas herself. Yes, there was much to do, for all of them.
Severus took a seat on one of the chairs Harry and Sirius had found then the elves recovered with a tired groan. When an elf popped in with a cup of tea for him, he relaxed back with a contented sigh. The chair was most comfortable. As he sipped the tea, crossing his legs, he looked around their bedroom, pleased with what they had accomplished.
Yes, the furnishings went well with what they planned for decorating and he loved how it looked. The carpeting was down, a task the elves managed very quickly. The walls were done and the furniture moved in. It was mostly arranged by now, thankfully. Sirius was working on the solid silver light fixtures, something which looked like old fashioned Gothic silver candle holders along the walls. Harry was over on the far side of the room at the small pen-like area with an old trunk which had been converted into a house for his Puffskein collection, making sure it was set up just right. He had just finished putting away all their belongings in various dressers, wardrobes and the like. They had accomplished quite a lot today, thankfully. The furnishings were moved up to the ballroom for storage. Tomorrow they would sort them according to what they wanted where and put them in areas so they didn’t have to look through everything as they finished rooms. Once they finished that, they would work on the fixtures. As Sirius said; they had enough for the whole house now, thankfully. Those needed tending to, at least in the hallways and the rooms they had done. They would work on the others as they finished.Because of all the two had found today, Severus wanted to take a nosy through the rooms as well to see if anything caught his fancy they could use. He might do so tomorrow when they finished the sorting then move on to decorating the rooms they did have done. Since the elves would spend the day working on the rooms they did have cleared out, it would be fine to tend to this rather than do other areas. Once he finished, they could press on to other rooms. He glanced at Sirius when the man came over and took a seat in the chair by him. Looking around at the fixtures, he gave a pleased nod when he saw they were all functional. They gave them more than enough light in here, something which pleased him. “You’re all done then?” He asked, assuming he was. This was an area Sirius was better at, so he let him tend to it.“Done,” Sirius assured him. “I even added a verbal spell to turn them on and off. The nightlights are set up for here to light the way to the bathroom and in there so we don’t have to turn the rest on. Before we go down for tea, I’ll key both of you into the magic for them. Going to do the same for the fixtures in the hall and other rooms tomorrow sometime. And set up dim lights for overnight in case.”“Good plan,” Severus told him, pleased with the addition.“Before tea, we’ll start at the top of the house and work our way down, putting a couple of the furballs in each room. The tracking and homing spell are on them, so they can find their way back here or Harry can locate them.” Sirius told him. “We have the pests mostly gone, but they’ll tend to anything left behind or any bugs for us. Better than us having to do it ourselves.”With a glance over at Harry, who was seated on the floor talking to the creatures and petting them as they crawled all over him, Severus smirked slightly, “He’ll still have plenty left to muck about with.”“Oh yes,” Sirius snickered, shaking his head. “He likes them and they’re not dangerous, so no harm there. Besides, even we like the humming. It’ll be nice to fall asleep to at night.”“I agree,” Severus nodded. With a sigh, he said, “We do need to press on with schooling, at least parts. Once we get the bottom floor tended to, at least hold a couple classes a day with him.”“Charms and the like we can work with while we clean,” Sirius said taking a sip of his beer when an elf delivered it. “Those are the biggies. He already has the basics of non-verbal down and is pressing on. Defense—he’s a bit ahead there. The others we’ll worry about. Maybe the ghosts can take on some? Theory anyway. He might like that. Not to mention it would give us time apart so we don’t end up at each other’s throats over so much.”“We’ll discuss it with Eddie tomorrow,” Severus told him, not having thought of that suggestion, but liking the idea. “I want part of the outside done before we delve into Defense because of what we want to do with him.”“Yeah, we don’t want to blast anything apart,” Sirius laughed. “Since you know what he needs for Charms and Transfiguration, I say we just incorporate it into what we’re doing. I gave him a basic lesson in conjuring objects today as we moved along and needed to tend to some areas. The theory—we can both talk him through it. While we have the books, we might manage to do a better job.”“We’ll go about it that way,” Severus agreed. “Maybe have him read the chapters at breakfast each morning so he has the foundation then walk him through whatever from there.”“Easy way to go. And I doubt he’ll balk at going about it this way. It should make it better on him since we both agree there is no doing essays like in school for so much.” Sirius shrugged.“It is,” Severus conceded. “We won’t worry about too much as we can press on at his pace with it. Just here and there.”“Plotting again?” Harry asked as he took a seat by Severus, chuckling.“Of course,” Sirius grinned.“Schooling, Mr. Potter,” Severus told him, normal smirk firmly in place.“Bollocks,” Harry groaned though he grinned as he did, taking a butterbeer from an elf.“Nothing to worry about,” Severus assured him, putting a hand on his shoulder then giving it a reassuring squeeze. “We aren’t planning full days or lessons yet, just trying to decide how to go about areas. As we just have you, we can manage in odd ways, like with cleaning. I doubt we’ll look at full classes or a schedule of sorts for a month or so, at least with us.” Then he explained the idea of the ghosts.“I can do that, easily,” Harry nodded. “Could be interesting.”“We’ll see,” Sirius said.Finishing his beer, he vanished the bottle then said, “Right, I’m starved. Let’s gather the furballs and put them out then find tea. After that—we’ll decide from there.”“Good plan,” Severus said, sending his cup to the kitchen. As Harry and Sirius gathered up enough of the Puffskeins to put in the rooms, Severus stretched and gave a soft sigh. Yes, this was good. He was more relaxed than he had been in years. And happy. Very happy. While he was sure issues would crop up, he was pleased with so much and adored it.As he trailed along behind the two, he snorted as some of their suggestions for fun, but smirked as well. While he might grouse, he would secretly admit he liked to partake in whatever, just so it didn’t end up too deranged.
