Chapter 11: Lies and Truth
“Boss?”Scabior groaned, his men never woke him in the middle of the night unless there was a very large problem. This wasn't going to be fun.“Scabior, ya awake?”The voice was coming from the front of the tent, near the door, in a hushed whisper. Why would Thom be whispering if there was an emergency? Opening one eye a slit, Scabior was temporarily blinded by the sunlight filtering in through the tent. What the hell? He never slept this late! Groggily he lifted his head, becoming aware of a warm, soft body pressed against him. Lexington was still sound asleep.Suddenly aware of how this must look Scabior's eyes sought out Thom. Sure enough, Thom was glancing around the tent at all the articles of discarded clothing, a smile playing at the corners of his lips.“It's not what it looks like, Thom. Though I wouldn't 'ave minded if that had happened,” he said in a low voice.Looking at Scabior, Thom smiled wider, “The men are up an' wonderin' wha' the plan is fer the day. When ya ne'er showed fer breakfast I started ta get a little worried. 'S not like ya ta sleep in.”“Yeah, I know. Musta been tired. I'll be out in a moment. You can tell them we're headin' south today.”Thom nodded as he turned to leave.“An' Thom?”Thom paused, looking back.“Don' mention any of this to the men. I wouldn't want them to get the wrong idea about why I'm choosin' to keep her around,” he said warningly.Another smile appeared on Thom's face, “Wouldn't dream o' it, Boss.”Once Thom had gone, Scabior turned his attention to the sleeping form beside him. Even though they'd been talking in hushed voices, he was surprised she had remained asleep. But then again, she hadn't proven herself to be a light sleeper. He'd been able to go about his normal routine most mornings without waking her.It felt wonderful to have her body snuggled into his. Scabior found the idea of getting out of bed rather depressing. He'd much rather stay here with her. His arm was still draped across her waist so he slipped his hand under the back of her shirt and started drawing patterns on her skin. How long would it take her to wake up to that?Within seconds she began stirring, sighing contentedly in her sleep. Her back arched lightly into him, a breathy moan coming from her throat. He smiled, clearly her back was just as sensitive as her sides. After a few more circles of his fingers, her eyes fluttered open.Lexington blinked as she opened her eyes. It was so bright. She closed her eyes again and buried her head between the pillow and Scabior's chest, giving a small disgruntled moan. His fingers continued to dance along her back, causing her to relax further into him.Scabior chuckled, “Mornin', sleepy.”Her eyes flew open as last nights events came crashing back to her. She started to push away from him but his strong arm around her waist prevented her from moving.“Ah ah, don' go movin' just yet, luv.”Lexington tensed as he leaned in and kissed her, wanting to pull away, but unable to make her body listen to her brain. Unable to stop herself she kissed him back, silently cursing her traitorous body. He smiled against her lips and pulled back.He brought his hand up to her hair, brushing a few strands off her cheek, “You still smell good enough to eat.”“What's with you and my smell? It's like your obsessed with it or something,” Lexington grumbled, though she blushed a bit.“I like it. I've never met anyone who smelled like you. There was a spot in the woods last night that smelled like you,” he murmured, leaning in to nip at her shoulder.Lexington's blood ran cold, “The woods smelled like me?”Hearing her tone, Scabior leaned away from her, studying her face. She was suddenly pale, the blood draining from her cheeks and her eyes were huge and scared. He narrowed his eyes at her curiously, “Yeah, just this one spot. Why?”“I... It's nothing. I have to use the loo.”He watched in shock as she rose from the bed, scooped up her jeans and all but scrambled to the bathroom. What the bloody hell was that all about? When she didn't reappear for a few minutes, Scabior got up and started to get ready for the day. His men were still expecting him and he couldn't leave them waiting while he satisfied his curiosity over her reaction.Lexington leaned against the bathroom door, her pants clutched to her chest. There was only one explanation she could think of for there being a mysterious spot in the woods that held her scent. It was one that gave her hope, thrilled her and terrified her all at the same time. Hermione.Slowly she slid to the floor. The only other person she knew who owned the perfume she did was Hermione. They'd found it in their fourth year. Lexington had snuck out of her house and they'd gone shopping in a small muggle town. They'd both loved the smell of the perfume so much they each bought two bottles and they both used it frequently. If it was Hermione Scabior had smelled, at least Lexington knew the wards they'd researched must be working and that her friends were still alive. But that didn't change the fact that he had probably stood within feet of Hermione, and maybe Harry and Ron too. Merlin, this was bad. She only hoped they were moving on soon, not staying in the same place for long. Maybe if they left, they'd be safe from the snatchers. Her heart ached, knowing how close she was to them for the first time in months and not being able to do anything about it. She desperately wanted to go with them. A few stray tears dripped down her cheeks. She wished with all her heart she had a way of getting to them. A way that wouldn't involve leading the snatchers right to them. But she didn't. She was stuck here. Without a wand she had no means of escaping.A knock on the door brought her out of her wallowing.“Lex? There's food on the table and your damned kneazle is back. Blaine said he was visitin' him last night. I'll see you when we get back tonight.”When they got back? Of course, they'd be going out snatching again. Like every other day. Fear gripped her heart. What if they went back to the same place? She surged to her feet and quickly dragged her jeans on. Throwing open the door she saw Scabior about to leave the tent.“Wait!”Scabior looked up startled, he hadn't expected her to emerge from the bathroom before he left. One look at her confirmed his suspicion that what he'd said about smelling her in the woods had rattled her. Her eyes were the tiniest bit red and a few tears shone on her cheeks.“Where are you going?”The question puzzled him, “To work, we can't all laze around the tent all day.” His attempt at humour had no effect on her, she still looked scared.“Are-... Are you going back to the area you found my scent?”Scabior narrowed his eyes at her. Why would she want to know that? And why did she sound like that was something she didn't want to happen?“Wasn't plannin' on it. Why? Is there somethin' you're not tellin' me?” he said, walking towards her.Lexington cursed her stupidity. Why did she outright ask about it like that? “N-no, I was just-...just wondering if that's the sort of thing you would investigate further. If that's how you go about following whatever leads you find in the woods.”Scabior stopped right in front of her, but she wouldn't meet his gaze, “I don' believe you.” He grasped her chin and forced her eyes to meet his, “What aren't you tellin' me, Lexington?”She shrugged, “Nothing, why would I have anything to tell you?”She hoped her act of nonchalance would convince him. Having him become suspicious enough to return to that spot was the last thing she wanted. Gods, she needed to work on this whole holding her tongue thing.Scabior searched her eyes, “I still don' believe you. But I can't stay here and drag it outta you, I 'ave to go meet my crew. We'll talk about this when I get back.”He let go of her chin and walked out the door. Lexington let out a shaky breath. If he was putting off interrogating her until tonight, he must not be going back to that spot after all. She didn't plan on telling him anything even if he did ask again, but she hoped her friends would be long gone by tonight.A loud meow caused her to turn and look at the table. Gawaine sat on one of the chairs, eyeing her expectantly.Lexington smiled, “You're hungry aren't you? Me too.”Deciding to put off thinking until she had eaten, she sat at the table. She put some food on the floor for Gawaine and then tucked into her own meal.Once she had eaten, Lexington picked up Gawaine and curled up in the arm chair. She absently petted his fur while she thought of something to tell Scabior if he pressed the issue. Finally settling on an idea, she turned to the desk and started looking at some of the maps Scabior had left out. After she'd studied the maps until she thought she had one or two of them memorized, she picked up the book she'd been reading last night. She may as well keep herself busy while she was being held captive here. If she ever managed to escape, maybe some of the stuff she'd read would come in handy. It was much later that Lexington heard the men return. Judging by the light outside it was just before dusk. Gawaine jumped down from her lap and sauntered towards the door. She smiled after the creature, it was almost as if he knew he was allowed to stay now. He must be going to see Blaine.Just as he reached the door it was pulled open. Scabior stopped and stared as Gawaine walked through the now open door, flicking his tail at him as if in thanks.Scabior shook his head, letting the door close behind him, “I let your damn pet stay and now he thinks he owns the place.”Lexington didn't reply, she didn't trust her voice to sound steady. Seeing Scabior brought back all the emotions she'd kept buried all day. She felt heat rising to her cheeks as she remembered last night, how his fingers had run across her skin. How she had lost control and enjoyed it.“So, you ready to talk about what happened this mornin'?”She roused herself from her daze. He was standing right in front of her, his arms crossed over his chest. He'd removed his coat at some point and she could make out his muscles through the thin material of his shirt. Stop it! She scolded herself, stay focused.“I was just curious how you do what you do. Whether you follow clues and trails, or if you just wander aimlessly through the woods looking for people.”Scabior tilted his head, “That depends on if we come across a clue that looks good enough to follow, but that isn't why you reacted the way you did this mornin'.”Lexington shrugged, “Oh that, I was just worried when you said you'd smelled me. My perfume isn't a common one and it's hard to find. I was afraid one of my animal friends had snuck in and stolen it as a trick. Jarveys, you met some of them the other day, are rather prone to playing pranks on people they like. I'd left my bottle in the loo and I wanted to make sure it was still there.”Scabior arched his brows, “An' was it?”“No, it was missing, like I suspected. Which is why I was a little upset. I thought about getting you to go back and look for it where you'd smelled it, but you said you weren't going back there. You seemed in a hurry to go meet your crew and I didn't want to bother you further. Luckily I convinced Gawaine to go on a little adventure and find the Jarveys. He brought them back and I managed to get my perfume from them, so everything is fine now.”Scabior regarded her for quite some time, his eyes darting around her face. She tried not to let her nerves show. She forced her breathing to remain steady and looked back at him with a cool and almost bored gaze. Finally, he spoke, “Well, that sounds like a reasonable answer.”Lexington let out a small sigh. Thank Merlin.“However, I don' think your tellin' me the truth.”Shit. Determined not to give herself away, she stared back at him, “Well, I am-”She stopped talking when Scabior's eyes flashed dangerously and he sprang forward. He was across the few feet between them in seconds, pulling her up from the chair. Lexington gasped as he pulled her to him by her elbows, staring down at her with angry eyes.“I don' like bein' lied to, Lexi.”“I-I'm not-” she stammered. He walked her backwards until her butt hit the edge of the desk, “I woulda thought you'd learned your lesson last night.”This time it was her eyes that sparked, “That was for a completely different reason! This has nothing to do with what happened last night! Now, let go!”Scabior didn't let her go, instead he used his body to push her to sit on the desk, manoeuvring himself between her legs. “It's relevant. I don' like it when people cross me,” he growled.“Uhhh, you are impossible!” she said, bringing up her hands to try and push him away.“I'm gonna give you one last chance to tell me the truth.”“I did!” she snapped.“'Ave it your way then.”Lexington watched in shock as his hands went to her jeans and undid the button and her zipper before she could react. He looked at her with a devilish look in his eyes and she suddenly realized what he meant to do. “No! Scabior, don't-” she said, trying to wiggle away from him.His hands grabbed her hips and pulled her to the edge of the desk, “Then tell me the truth.”“No.”His eyes narrowed, “So, you admit you were lyin'?”Lexington groaned silently, “No.”“I'm gonna need more than a 'no', sweetheart.”He pulled her off the desk just long enough to roughly drag her jeans past her arse, then he had her back on the desk and was back between her legs. Her hands came up to pummel his chest so he grabbed her wrists and pushed them to the desk beside her. He mumbled the binding spell he'd used last night and returned his hands to her jeans, slowly pushing them further down.“Scabior, please-”He glanced up from what he was doing. Her eyes were wide and fearful. He sighed, this wasn't really helping him achieve his goal, but he needed to know why she hadn't wanted him to go back to that spot. “You ready to tell me what really happened?”“I-I can't.”His brows shot up at that, “You can't? So you were lyin'?”“Yes, I-”, Lexington sucked in a breath of air, “I'm sorry.”Well, at least he'd gotten her to admit that. He placed his hands gently on her thighs, rubbing small circles with his thumbs. “Just don' do it again.”Lexington swallowed as she nodded.“Now, what really happened? Why did you get so upset when you thought I might go back there?”She closed her eyes and let out a small sigh, “Please,” she said, opening her eyes to look at him, “don't make me tell you.”“That wasn't the right answer, luv,” he said softly, leaning in to press his lips to hers. Pulling back he contemplated her. She obviously wasn't going to tell him, and he didn't want to undo any more of his progress with her than he already might have. Maybe he could guess. She wouldn't tell him when he guessed correctly, but he could pay attention to her body language, she was fairly easy to read. He smiled as he placed a kiss to her neck.Lexington couldn't comprehend this sudden change in him. He'd been so demanding and in control and it had scared her, but now he was being so gentle. As he sucked lightly on her neck her mind flashed back to the previous night. He'd been gentle then too, and it had felt wonderful. She swallowed, it was starting to feel wonderful again.Scabior noted the increase in her breathing, “Was it you? Did you get out of the tent somehow an' try to run?”His words were mumbled against her skin, but she still understood them. She tried to focus on staying still. She wouldn't answer. One of his hands trailed to her knee, pulling it up to his hip and holding it there, drawing circles on the back of her knee, sending a shiver down her spine. Merlin, she wished he'd never discovered how much she liked being tickled.“Was Gawaine out for an evening romp? He could smell like you, since he's in your lap half the time.”He planted kisses all over her neck in between each statement. Her eyes closed and she tilted her head, with a breathy moan, to give him more access.Scabior smirked. She was back to enjoying what he was doing. That was good. It might lower her guard too, allowing him to find his answer. “Maybe there was someone else wandering the woods that smelled like you? They could have used the same perfume.”He felt her tense as she swallowed. That was worth delving further into. His other hand slipped under the back of her shirt, simultaneously pressing her closer and tickling lightly.Lexington let out a small groan, her world started to spin as his fingers and lips tickled and teased her now hyper-sensitive flesh.“Does one of your friends use the same perfume? Someone else who's run away from school?”Her breath hitched, but he didn't know if it was from his question or his hand's movements. He quickly racked his brain for any mention she'd made of friends.Abruptly he pulled away from her, “Hermione?”Lexington froze, she could feel the colour draining from her face. How had he figured that out?Scabior watched the arousal fade from her eyes, to be replaced by confusion and fear. Shit. He'd wanted to see how far she'd let him go, she certainly seemed willing when he went slow, but what he'd just stumbled upon couldn't be put off.“Your friend Hermione uses the same perfume as you, doesn't she?”Lexington didn't answer, she just started back at him.“I was probably feet away from her. So she's using enchantments to hide herself?”Lexington just blinked at him.Scabior suddenly realized something else. His eyes grew wide, “She's travellin' with Harry Potter.” He glanced sharply at Lexington, “Isn't she?”She shook her head, “I-... N-no-... I don't-...”“Merlin, no wonder you didn't want me to go back!”Lexington felt dread building inside her as he turned and walked away from her. She tried to hop off the desk but her wrists were still bound to it. “Scabior.”He grabbed his coat and threw it on.“Scabior, please! Don't do this.”Scabior turned to her, “I 'ave to, Lex.”Tears threatened to spill from her eyes, “No. Please, don't. I-I'll do anything. Just please don't go back there.”He groaned, as tempting as that offer was, he had a job to do. It was Harry Potter they were talking about, not just some random friend of hers. He turned to the door.Lexington panicked, she tried in vain to wrench her hands away from the wood. “Scabior!” she yelled, trying to convince him to stop.He lifted the tent flap.Anger at being ignored filled her, “SCABIOR! Don't you DARE leave me bound to this desk!”Scabior turned, a small smirk on his face, “Don' move, luv. I'll be back before you know it an' we can continue our little adventure.”Then he walked out of the tent and was gone. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
