Chapter 12
Sirius settled in front of Hank's desk at his office and relaxed. Since the last meeting here, he was far more relaxed about the place and wasn't worried. He then chuckled when Yama flapped over and landed on the arm of the chair, settling down. Though still a tad wary, he reached over and stroked the bird's head, pleased when he received a happy hissing noise, something he could easily identify by now, in return. Then he caught the bag of jerky Hank tossed him and fed a couple to the bird. “You don't look as busy as last time,” he commented, glancing around and not seeing the sheer mass there was before.
“At least with deliveries,” Hank told him honestly, sorting through papers on the desk and putting them in some sort of order. “As soon as I finish this, we'll move over to the Three Broomsticks again. Figured with the time we set up for the meeting, we'd both want tea.”“Fine with me,” Sirius agreed amicably with a nod. Then he launched in, “Wanted you to know that you probably saved Mrs. Yaxley's life. You were right; he was poisoning her.”Hank stopped, looked at Sirius then gave a slow nod and a sigh. “I figured, as what he bought was common enough that it wasn't hard for me to get my hands on, which made me wonder why he came to me for it.” Then he asked, slightly wary, “Does the DMLE want to talk to me, or don't you know?”“They don't from what a couple Aurors I know have said,” Sirius assured him. “As you stated; it's dead common. They don't care where he bought it, honestly, as they have plenty of evidence he did the poisoning, among other bits. You're in the clear there.”“Good,” Hank nodded, pleased he wouldn't end up drawn in. “This means I'm screening some people out better. No shot in hell I want drawn into a mess because someone is an idiot.”“Don't blame you a bit there,” Sirius told him honestly, relaxing when Hank sent him a beer after grabbing a drink of his own. Then he chuckled when Yama took a good sized drink out of his glass. “He likes this, doesn't he?”“Always has for some reason,” Hank said with a soft amused snort as the bird enjoyed the cold beer. “I wanted a bit of information.” When Sirius nodded and motioned for him to press on, he asked, “Which paper here covers the war the best? The Prophet doesn't, that's for damned sure. Not sure about any of the others around. And is there a daily which does?”“Go with the Irish Cailleach Feasa,” Sirius said. “It's the best you get around these parts for it. There are a couple on the continent which cover it better than others, but it's part of their daily for that country. The Cailleach is doing a damned good job of making sure it reports everything it can honestly. In fact, it's been so good at it, the one managing editor was killed by Death Eaters after a thorough article about known Death Eaters and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Even that didn't deter them the way it would some others. They just made sure it's known they won't be cowed by threats and kept right on going.”“I'll get a subscription then,” Hank nodded, making note of the name on a piece of parchment by his elbow. “Was wondering since the Prophet is trash when it comes to reporting anything other than what the Ministry wants them to say and gossip. Rather like a tabloid than a real paper,” he sneered, shaking his head.“No arguments from me there,” Sirius grumbled, rolling his eyes. While he wanted to delve into the personal bits, Remus's advice about that end came back to him and he didn't. They'd keep this business for now and he'd worry about the personal later. Then he pressed on. “Right, do you have anything for us?”“Actually, yes,” Hank nodded, sliding back and pulling a small notebook out of his desk. After thumbing through it, he rattled off a couple bits he'd heard which he thought could help. One was from a known Death Eater and the other from someone in the Ministry. When he finished, he added, “Not much there, but should give you some clues. Picked up a few more clients, so hearing a bit more.”After taking in what Hank said, Sirius gave a firm nod. “We can use it. It at least gives us some hints about bits. With other things we hear, we might be able to put it together and come up with what's going on.”“Thought so,” Hank told him, putting the book back in the drawer. Then he did the normal and asked about an area for himself and information, “When it comes to the Order, what exactly are you lot doing? I get you're trying to help and passing information, but there's more, isn't there?”Though this question had him wary since it dealt with sensitive areas, Sirius did answer. “Mostly we're trying to protect people and pass information. Albus also has us looking for objects that can help finally end the war by making sure the evil arse can die.”“What kind of objects?” Hank asked, curious, looking up from what he was doing. This he hadn't heard. The information and protection he had.“They are called Horcruxes,” Sirius told him, tone hushed. A disgusted look on his face, he asked, “Do you know what one is?” Most he would just explain it to as they wouldn't have a clue, but Hank was different.A sour look on his face, Hank shook his head then admitted, “I know what they are. Right disgusting. They are Voldemort's I take it?”Sirius was pleased he didn't have to go into the explanation of what they were, though he flinched at the use of the name. “They are,” he nodded.“You said Horcruxes, as in plural. There are more than one? And how many? Have you managed to find some?” He asked, leaning back, highly curious. As he twirled his quill between his fingers, he thought over what this could mean.“There are more than one, yeah,” Sirius confirmed with a nod. Again, he was wary about this, but pressed on, assuming Hank just wanted the information for himself like so much else. While plenty in the Ministry knew about the objects, it was top secret and no one wanted it out for the world to hear. It would just cause a mass panic and make the evil git realize they were hunting for them, which would lead him to going and collecting what he could. “We've found two so far and think there are five more. And, well, Harry might be a sixth, not sure there. Albus hasn't come right out and said he is, but everything we know leans that way, especially since a few of us have put our heads together and pieced information we've heard other places or in private talks together. It leans us that way anyway.”“Interesting,” Hank said, taking it all in and shaking his head at what the old man had done for so long. “Do you have a clue what the rest are?” That was just for his own curiosity sake, nothing more. With what he knew of Horcruxes, he wanted no part of them and sure as hell wouldn't go hunting them.“Only one,” Sirius sighed, arms folded over his chest, slouching down. Before Hank could ask, as he was sure the question was coming, “Nagini, the evil git's snake. What we know of her leans us to think she is.” Then he explained about how she had mutated over the years and shook his head. “Honestly? We need to find the others and get rid of them before we think to tackle her. Not only is he ferocious about protecting her, she's plenty deadly herself. We don't want to chance even trying unless something really odd presents itself.”“Don't blame you there,” Hank chuckled, shaking his head. “The other ones? No clues at all?”“The only leaning we have tells us they might be from the Hogwarts founders. That's all we have, honestly. Even Albus is stumped.” Before Hank could say anything, as you could easily see he wanted to, Sirius added, “We think this is a legit he doesn’t know, not one of his pretending not to. The only hint he has is one might be a cup of some sort. Even then he's not sure. As we don't have a clue, we have no way of finding out even if we stumble across one accidentally.” Sirius grumbled, shaking his head.“There is a detection spell for them,” Hank told him, thinking over what was said and highly curious about so much.“There is?” Sirius asked, eyes widening, straightening up. “As far as we knew, there isn't one. Even Albus said he couldn’t find anything to help.”“I remember reading it in a book I have, I think,” Hank said, trying to remember where he read about it.“What would it take to get you to find it for us? It could be a huge help,” Sirius asked, hoping the price wasn't too high. Hell, he'd pay a high one if he had to!“Let me see if I can find it again then we'll negotiate,” Hank told him with a bit of a smirk. Oh, he knew what he wanted, but wouldn't say it. He'd come up with something else. “It might take me time as I have a ton of books at home.”“As long as we have a line on a spell, we're good. Hell, if you can remember what sort of book you saw it in, we might be able to find it ourselves.” Sirius told him honestly, pleased with this.“If I can't track it down in the next week, I'll give you what I can remember,” Hank nodded. This had been a fruitful meeting and they weren't far into it, something which pleased Sirius to no end. Relaxing a bit, he asked, “Know much about those areas? I’m asking because it could give us a big hand if you do.”“Some,” Hank said vaguely with a chuckle. Then he added, “Maybe more than most because of what I do. Need to know bits to keep myself safe and not run afoul of the law.”“Didn't think about that,” Sirius admitted honestly. “Can see why then.”“I stay away from the Dark Arts personally,” Hank explained. “They are something I need to know about, though, so I can judge some bits when customers want odd areas. Not chancing importing something Dark. Most aren't illegal, but are frowned on. Others are. I need to know the difference.”“Another bit I didn't think about,” Sirius told him, now understanding better.“I also need to make damned sure they're safe when I get them and have to store some bits strangely, hence the reason I have to find detection spells for so much,” Hank added, going back to what he was doing. “And build warded storage areas for the legal ones.”“More I didn't consider,” Sirius nodded, though he filed what was said away for a later time. If Hank knew how to handle certain areas, it might be a huge help in the future.“You getting any more out of Lucius?” He asked, pressing on for information.“At this time—only a leaning,” Hank said honestly. “One backed up by others who come in.” Before Sirius could ask, he elaborated, “There's something big in the works, though I don't know what. All I know is it's been mentioned. You lot might want to nose around the best you can to see if you hear more than I am. Not sure what it pertains to, but my gut is telling me it's big.”“I'll pass it along. We might be able to manage to find information on it,” Sirius replied distractedly, wondering what could be coming. “If it comes down to being urgent, owl me as fast as you can. I'll pay the 'cost', whatever it is, when we meet next.”“Will do,” Hank nodded. “If it's big enough, I'll send Yama. You'll know it's huge and urgent if he shows up. Any other—I'll just rent an owl and send it that way.”“Good plan,” Sirius agreed. After finishing off the last of the paperwork with a relieved sigh, Hank began stowing everything away. “Right, done, finally. Let's meet at the Three Broomsticks and we'll press on from there. Go about it the way you did last time.”When Sirius nodded then left, he stood and waited for Yama to hop on his shoulder before exiting himself. Thankfully, this was really the last of the business part he had to handle tonight. The rest was just his normal gathering intel and putting out feelers. A nice relaxing night for him.
Once more settled into a comfortable private room at the Three Broomsticks, Sirius was pleased. He had garnered plenty of information from Hank this time. It wasn't huge or precise, but it was enough they could take it and see what they could piece together. And what Hank was asking in return, aside from the bit about the Horcruxes, wasn't anything he took issue giving up. Even better was he was able to spend time with the man. Though this wasn't like the dates they went on, it was still together and he learned plenty about Hank, something he liked.
After finishing his meal and tossing Yama the bone from the meat, Hank leaned back with a contented groan. “I'm taking on some new clients, including some I know work in the Ministry, so I might be able to piece together more or hear other bits. Not sure. Let me see what comes from it.”“Anything will help,” Sirius told him honestly. “If you can't, we might since we've been around since the beginning of the whole nightmare. Well, others anyway. I was out of commission for the start of it.”“Understood,” Hank nodded, figuring out what was left unsaid there.“I have a question about your godson,” he then pressed on. When Sirius motioned for him to go on, he asked, “Is everyone still looking for him? From what I've heard, plenty seem like they are, from your lot to the Ministry all the way to Voldemort.”Once more Sirius flinched at the mention of the name, but told him, “They are. I think most are for different reasons, though.”“What reasons are those?” Hank inquired, decidedly curious. “Well, other than Voldemort. I think that one's rather obvious.”“It is,” Sirius admitted, looking sour after another flinch. “From what we know, he wants him dead, period.” Then he explained, “I think the Ministry wants him for the same reason Albus does; to end this mess. Everyone and their bleeding aunt knows about that Prophecy now. They seem like they're following it. Others—meaning me and some helping are seeing what we can do to find him so we can not only protect him, but make sure he knows what's going on so he doesn't end up in the middle of this war without realizing it.”“Any clues where he is? I mean, the speculation is he's dead since he vanished so long ago,” Hank asked, settling back and petting Yama when the bird landed on the arm of his chair.“None,” Sirius grumbled, looking mildly irate. “And I mean none. We don't think he's dead because of a couple clues we know most don't, but it doesn't help in the search. We're going to try a couple bits to get information from a few we think know where he is or what happened, but we have to figure out some things first.” This he wasn't fully going into. While Hank might not lean to either side of the war, this was something he didn't want to get out. And it was mainly to protect Harry and keep anyone from finding out what they did know.“Do any of you know what happened to him?” Hank asked, just curious on the topic. He didn't have a stake in any of it, so it really didn't matter to him, but it was one of those bits. Well, and there was the reward. Something which was that large when it came to money always had his attention.“Again, no,” Sirius gruffed, a hard cast to his face. “People who were supposed to keep an eye on him didn't and it was years before anyone knew he vanished. Whatever clues there were are long gone.”“Still one of those great mysteries,” Hank told him after processing what was said. “It was even mentioned in the States here and there. We won't get into the false Harry Potter sightings. Those are all over the world, as I'm sure you know.”“We know,” Sirius told him, looking plenty sour. “Those fakes have helped nothing. We've gone off on more than one wild goose chase for ones which looked promising. All are fake or a case of mistaken identity. Each time I get my hopes up, though. Just frustrating, completely.”“I can see where it would end up being so,” Hank commiserated, nodding as he did.He then changed tracks slightly and asked, “Why in the hell are so many people laying faith in a prophecy like that? I understand some are quite real, but we were taught, as were most others, the majority are self fulfilling. Even if they aren't, they ended up contradicted by another given later. Has anyone bothered to check if there is another which contradicts the initial one?”“I'm agreeing with you,” Sirius sighed, leaning back after sipping his beer. “Several of us think it was a case of so many bought into it and made it to where it did happen, not because of predestination. They believed it and made sure it would be fulfilled, like Albus and the evil arse. Once it was set in motion, others just fed into it. And we have no idea if there's another prophecy about this mess. The only reason we knew about the first one was Albus heard it when it was given. Then it was passed by someone who eavesdropped to the evil git. Not sure how the States work there, but only the workers in the Hall of Prophecy and the people whose names are on the jars can hear them. We wouldn't have a way to find out.”“The States aren't that way,” Hank told him. Then he explained the Freedom of Information Act and how you could get copies. “Very strange, this,” he then admitted, shaking his head. “You lot might want to see if there is another one in some way. I'm sure you have sources you can ask. Unspeakables do speak, despite what most think. If the price is right anyway,” he then added with a soft chuckle and grin.“Let me see what we can find out,” Sirius answered, tone distracted. “If we can't, I'll come to you and barter to see what you can find for us. Hell, maybe they have a clue we don't on the whole cluster. From what I can tell, we're doing nothing but spinning our wheels and running in circles.”“Might be the way to go,” Hank nodded. He, too, was curious, so he'd see what Sirius could come up with. If he couldn't, he might get involved in this part more because of his curiosity than anything else. And, well, if he helped find Potter, the reward was his. A million Galleons was a big lure there. Then, after a check of his watch, he said, “I think it's time for us to end this. I have a few bits to tend to tonight.”As it was long after the normal hour, Sirius wouldn't grouse. With a nod, he said, “Will set one up with you again for next week when I see what's going on.”Then he stood and grinned at Yama, who came closer so he could pet him. “You're still one scary arse bird, Yama, but I’m getting used to you.”“He likes you,” Hank told him, making sure his jacket was on right and he had everything. “You're the first one he's allowed to do such things with him, even ones he'd let feed him and such.”“I'm special,” Sirius grinned, petting the bird's head. As he did, he was keeping an eye on what Hank was doing. Though this was a business meeting, he wanted to press on to the personal bit just a tad. It would help with what they were building on.As Hank stepped closer, obviously ready to leave, Sirius pinned him to the wall when he was next to him and held him there with his body, though not tightly and kissed him passionately. As he did, he let his hand drift up and down his stomach.Though stunned and on edge when pinned to the wall, his normal instincts kicking in, Hank quickly relaxed and leaned into the kiss, slipping an arm around Sirius to hold him there. This was good! Unexpected, but he liked it. He loved how Sirius' body felt pressed to his. When Hank wrapped his arm around him, Sirius moaned into his mouth, pressing tighter to the body he had pinned to the wall. Yeah, this was damned nice.Though he wanted to continue, he knew he couldn't. Hank said something about having bits to tend to, so he'd break it off. He just wanted the younger man to know what he started the other night was still there and he liked it.After pulling back once he broke off the kiss, Sirius gazed into those green eyes and grinned roguishly. “Didn't want you thinking the other night was a fluke of some sort.”“I didn't,” Hank admitted, panting slightly, grinning a little himself. “Liked it, though,” he said honestly.“As did I,” Sirius told him. Then he leaned forward and kissed him again, softer this time and just a quick one. Once he broke it off, he stepped back. “You better go, then. We'll talk in a couple nights when we go out.”“We will,” Hank assured him, straightening up and making sure his clothes were in order. Yeah, he liked this bit, a lot, despite the surprise. “Will send you the details tomorrow.”“Can't wait,” Sirius said honestly then gestured for him to go first out of the room. Mostly it was so Hank could slip out first with no one the wiser while he traversed the main room downstairs. Part, though was to watch Hank's arse as he walked down the stairs. Yeah, it was nice and he wanted to see it. It would keep him focused until their date, that's for damned sure!
