(And if you have made it this far, thank you for reading!)
“I’m so sorry to call you in so close to Christmas, Mr. Potter. My supervisor is out of country and you were the next person up the ladder.”“That is exactly what you are supposed to do, Renee.” Harry said to the small witch as they both stood outside of a dimly lit apartment complex. Renee turned red from the complement, it was not everyday that Harry Potter appreciated one’s competency as an auror. “So, tell me, what do you know?”
Renee had thoroughly prepared her oral report about the murder site. “The witch that was murdered, Miss Amanda Tauber was 25 years old. She lived alone with her cats. She worked as a nurse assistant to a child birth healer at Saint Mungo’s. Just a few hours ago, her friend, also a witch, came to meet up with her for a pre-arranged outing. When she arrived at Miss Tauber’s apartment no one answered the door. She looked through the window and saw her lying on the floor. The friend broke the window, entered the apartment, and discovered that Miss Tauber was dead.”
“Alright, good work.” Harry replied. “What is the friend’s name?”
“Venus Philtzer.”
“And you said she worked with a healer. Who would that be?”
“Mrs. Astoria Malfoy.”
Harry paused for a second at the last name. Astoria Malfoy, the wife of his Hogwarts rival, Draco Malfoy. After the events near the end of the war, Harry had not seen Draco for some time. The boy who aged into the Draco Malfoy of the current times had spent three years in Azkaban, a mild sentence compared to many of the other deatheaters. After that he went into a type of private consulting. The ministry often employed his services when dealing with little understood objects which had been created using dark magic or complex enchantments. Draco Malfoy had become an expert on that type of thing during the time he spent repairing the vanishing cabinet which would eventually allow countless deatheaters to enter Hogwarts. However, over the years, Malfoy had been of such great assistance that he probably saved more lives than he destroyed that day at Hogwarts.
Harry often came into contact with the man. They would never be good friends, that much was certain. However, they had found a mutual respect for each other. Draco seemed to have learned much during his three years in prison. Harry hoped that he was not connected to the murder of Miss Tauber, especially since he had made so much progress away from the dark side.
“Do you think the Malfoy’s are connected to this murder, Sir?” Renee asked.
“We can’t rule anything out until we know the full story.”
Together they entered the dark building and headed towards apartment 2 on the ground floor.
As a rule, aurors never traveled about in large groups. Muggles were more perceptive than many people in the wizarding world gave them credit for. If they saw a swarm of official looking personnel entering an area they may sense that a crime had occurred, drawing even more attention to the situation.
The inside of the apartment was small, but not as dimly lit. It had however, been somewhat torn apart. Flower vases and laps lay broken on the floor. Furniture was turned into its side. “Well there certainly was a struggle.” He remarked. Walking towards the window, Harry found the body of Miss Tauber lying face down in a puddle of semi dry blood. Rigor mortis had set in and the body was swollen, making it difficult to tell where all the blood had come from. Her hands were tied out in front of her and held in placed by an enchantment. “serpens ligatus” Harry whispered to himself. “Renee, do you see the binding spell that was used on her?” He said to the witch. She nodded her head. “It’s a snake chains charm. The bonds get tighter the more they are struggled against. A pretty tricky spell, it must have been practiced for quite some time.”
“Do you think we are dealing with a well-practiced dark wizard then Sir?” Renee asked, suddenly looking very freighted.
“No, look at the state of this apartment.” He said gesturing around to the mess surrounding him. “There was a struggle. A practiced dark wizard would not have had to try so hard to kill her.”
“Well, um, that’s good.”
“Do you know where the friend is now?” Harry asked.
“She was taken to the ministry for questioning.”
“Do we know the last time Miss Tauber was at work?
“No, Sir.”
“Okay, you stay here and wait for evidence collection.”
“And where are you going to be?” Renee asked again nervously.
“I’m going to pay the Malfoys a visit.” He answered as he turned to leave. “And Renee-“
“Yes Sir?”
“You did a good job here tonight.”
He apparated before she could thank him.
Malfoy Manor no looked as ominous as it once had. It was still a massive house with large pointed formations crowning its top. However, the feeling of dread was long gone. Where large grotesque gargoyles had once stood in the yard, spruce trees had been planted and were now decorated with festive ornaments. The old black curtains had been removed from the large windows and replaced with crimson ones instead, giving an outsider a feeling of welcome as they looked up from the entrance.
Harry had returned to the Malfoy Manor on several occasions. All ex-deatheaters were subject to yearly ministry raids in which officers from the Appropriate Use of Muggle Artifacts were commonly escorted by aurors for added protection. After Lucias Malfoy had died, Astoria and Draco disposed of any and all questionable items on the premises. However, they were still required to open their home to the yearly search.
Harry rang the bell, knocked loudly on the door and waited a few minutes. Nothing. The house was illuminated from inside, so it was likely that someone was home. He repeated the procedure again. Still, no answer. He turned the door knob and, much to his surprise it was unlocked. He stepped inside as he pulled out his wand.
Harry Potter, wand drawn, walked right into Astoria Malfoy’s Christmas party. Many of the guest paused and looked at him curiously. Others looked around the room trying to see if any dark wizards were among them. He lowered his wand, walking past the crowd of onlookers and into the next room. The party goers in this room payed little attention to his entrance. Music filled the large hall and many of its occupants were dancing gleefully.
Harry spotted Draco Malfoy in the corner of the room seated in a large green chair. His wife Astoria was sat on his lap holding her husband’s hand over the small swell of her belly. The two were looking happily out over their guest. A rather large, short, and brown haired man, clearly inebriated, was dancing with a cauldron in the middle of the room, causing a great deal of laughter. Harry looked over at Draco once more. Their eyes met and the smile evaporated from the blonde man’s face.
Draco stood up slowly lowering Astoria into the chair as he did so. “Stay here love.” He told her seriously. The tone of his voice immediately alarmed her.
Draco walked over to Harry swiftly. “Sorry to interrupt-“ Harry began to say.
“Not here Potter.” Draco interrupted. He turned the corner into the next room and Harry followed, closing the large oak door behind them.
“To what do I owe this pleasure, Potter?” He asked curtly. “My yearly is not for another five months. Are you here to embarrass me in front of my guest?”
“I’m not here for that, Malfoy.” Harry responded with an equal tone of menace. “And it will be up to you if this ends in embarrassment.”
Draco exhaled quickly in a typical show of Malfoy annoyance. “Have a seat Potter.” He said gesturing to the desk beside them. Harry had been in this room many times. It was Draco’s office, the one he used for consulting his clients at least. Harry took a seat on the opposite side of the desk and faced his school rival. Their exchange of un-pleasant pleasantries was a common practice. They no longer held the same animosities that they once had. However, they were also ageing men, too set in their ways to figure out new ways of interacting.
“Potter, you should know before you start that I will not be providing any consultations for the ministry until the new year.” Draco said as he leaned back in his chair.
“I’m not here for that either.” Harry replied. The fact that Malfoy looked at him suddenly indicated that he had gotten his attention. “I’m actually not even here to talk to you.”
“No?”
“No. I’m here to speak to your wife.” Harry said simply.
“And why would that be?”
“I’m looking for information about a Miss Amanda Tauber. I was told she works with your wife.”
“Well yes, she does,” Draco said with a rather curious tone, “but I don’t understand why you would not just want to speak to Miss Tauber.”
It was not common practice to release information about murders, but Harry figured that Malfoy would soon find out, if he didn’t already. “Miss Tauber is dead. She has been for some time. I just came from the scene of the crime.”
“That can’t be possible.” Draco said suddenly, turning an even lighter shade of pale.
“And why is-“
“Miss Tauber is in my upstairs drawing room right now.”
They both stood quickly and ran from the office.
“Can you lock down the house?”
“domum fortis!” Draco shouted pointing the wall next to him. The house began to groan. Several of the guest screamed as the windows and doors faded into the walls, leaving only strong stone walls in their place. He ran to his wife, taking her arm and pulling her quickly from the chair.
“Draco what’s-“
“We must find Scorpius.” He told her, leading them quickly up the stairs. “We have an intruder.”
