The Power of Three
When Bella awoke the next morning, she was surprised to find herself alone in the bed. Not only was she alone, but from the state of the bedclothes it seemed that she had been alone all night. *Oh Merlin, I hope this doesn't mean that things went badly with Sirius last night, * she thought. She decided that she could probably wait to go looking for them until after she'd had a shower and some coffee. At the moment she probably didn't stand a chance of finding them anyway. Yesterday's interview with Cornelius had exhausted her and, combined with her normal aversion to mornings, she thought she'd be more likely to get lost herself than find anyone.
Feeling more like herself after her shower, she wandered out into the living area, intending to make some coffee. Severus had taken to keeping a jar here for her to use. Ordinarily if she needed coffee during the day she'd conjure some but first thing in the morning she was as likely to end up with mud as coffee if she tried. She stepped over her lovers, who were curled up on the rug in front of the fire and was halfway to the cupboard containing her coffee before she realised what she'd done. Slowly she turned around. Sure enough there the two of them were, wrapped so tightly around one another that she could hardly tell where one ended and the other began. Her first thought was one of disappointment that they'd let her sleep through what must have been some pretty explosive sex if it had left the two of them exhausted enough to fall asleep on the floor. Noticing the scratches and bru ado adorning Severus' pale body, her second thought was to wonder how she'd managed to sleep through it anyway. She summoned a blanket and draped it over the two of them, unwilling to wake them yet.
*Sev looks like he's been attacked by a wild animal, * she thought. *Well, a wild Muggle Studies Professor anyway. *
She filled a jug with water and tapped it with her wand to make it boil. Adding a couple of spoonfuls of granules from the jar she soon had a steaming mug of coffee in her hands. Wrapping both hands around the mug she leant against the cupboard and enjoyed the sense of heat flooding through her body. Inhaling deeply, the bitter odour filled her senses. She slowly raised the mug to her lips and took a sip. She let the coffee roll around her mouth for a moment before swallowing it, savouring the flavour. *Ah caffeine, there really is nothing like it. * A soft chuckle from the direction of the rug roused her from the trance she habitually sank into while enjoying her first cup of coffee of the day. She glanced over and saw Remus smiling at her.
"You certainly know how to enjoy your coffee," he drawled, amusement colouring his voice.
=Coffee is a religious experience, Remus. It shouldn't be wasted, = she instructed him with a smile. =It woke you up at any rate. I think that probably qualifies as a miracle. =
"Do you think you could pause in your bid to get it canonised long enough to make me some?" he asked plaintively.
=You drink coffee? = Bella queried, as she poured another mug.
"Doesn't everyone?"
Bella indicated Severus, who was still asleep.
"Well of course not, "Remus chuckled. "How stupid of me. We couldn't possibly lower ourselves and drink anything invented by muggles."
"I have an entire storeroom full of potions designed to give you energy and stimulate your mind and every one of them tastes better than that disgusting concoction that you insist on consuming." Severus' sleep-roughened tones surprised both of them. He sat up and stretched, the blanket falling to the floor. When he finished he found them both staring at him with slightly glazed expressions.
"What?" he queried impatiently.
"That was - nice," Remus said dazedly.
=Could you do that again? = Bella asked.
"Probably not actually," he admitted ruefully as he rose to his feet somewhat stiffly. "We have three large, comfortable beds between us. How precisely did we end up spending the night on the floor?"
Remus opened his mouth to answer but Severus cut him off, "Yes thank you. I do remember how we enup dup down here. I'm going to have a hot shower."
Bella quickly drained her mug, =I'll join you. =
Severus looked at her still-wet hair. "You've already showered," he remarked.
=You can't be too clean,= she said, letting her eyes roam over his lean body. She looked over at Remus and raised one eyebrow in invitation.
"Sorry. Can't," he said regretfully. "I'm sued ted to be meeting Siri." He stood up and cast some basic freshening spells on himself before summoning his robes. "Come and join us for lunch?"
Severus looked like he was trying to look for a way of declining which wouldn't upset Remus, so Arabella beat him to it and accepted for both of them.
=We'll be there, Remy, = she said before dragging a scowling Severus into the bathroom and shutting the door. Remus laughed as he left the Potion Master's rooms and headed towards his own, whistling softly to himself.
Remus let himself into his rooms quietly in case his old friend was still in bed. Sirius stood motionless in front of the window, staring out across the grounds.
"Siri?"
"It's so beautiful," Sirius said quietly, not turning around.
"Hogwarts?" Remus asked confused. "Yes it is. Probably cold though."
"I don't care about that. I want to be out there. I want to walk through the snow and see how beautiful it all is. I want to go skating on the lake. I want to play Quidditch again, the way we used to. Do you remember, Remus? You, me, and James swooping around the Quidditch pitch, as free as the air, chasing one another and throwing snowballs. Peter in the stands, cheering us on. I miss it, Remy. You don't know what it's like. Travelling everywhere as Padfoot, skulking in the shadows, afraid to be seen."
"Oh Siri," Remus said, pulling him into a hug. "It'll happen, Siri. I swear it will. We'll clear your name and you'll be free to stride around here as if you owned the place, like you al use used to. You're Sirius Black, damn it. Someone as petty and insignificant as Peter can't crush you. This won't destroy you; I won't let it!" His voice had grown fierce by the end of his speech and Sirius was looking at him with awe.
"You always were the strongest of us. Everyone always underestimated you."
"Then why don't you trust me when I say that I can handle Severus?" Remus asked.
"You're going to get hurt, Moony," Sirius said.
"I've been hurt before. If it happens I'll survive. For now I'm happy. Please just accept that."
"I'll try, Remus, I promise," Sirius said, looking at Remus with a gleam of mischief in his eyes for the first time since they had been reunited. "As long as you promise that if he does hurt you, I can kill him."
Remus glared at him, "You can not kill him. But I will let you help me bury the body."
Suddenly they were both laughing and for a moment it was as if the last 14 years had never happened. Sirius reached out and pulled Remus to him again, hugging him tightly. Remus briefly hugged him back and then pushed against his chest.
"Oxygen, Siri. I need to breathe. Come on, it's cold over here. Let's sit by the fire and you can tell me what you've been up to for the last couple of months."
=Come on, Sev. It's time to go to lunch, = Arabella signed.
"I don't suppose there's anything I could say to get out of this?" Severus asked.
=Not a chance. I want you there and Remus wants you there. So you're going to go and you're going to be polite and then I'm going to see if I can talk Remus into playing some one-on-one Quidditch. Unless you want to play too -=
"Not particularly. It would hardly do for the students to see me cavorting around with the two of you. I will come and watch however."
=I wish Siri could join in. It must be miserable for him being stuck inside all the time, = she signed. =If there weren't so many students still here we might have been able to risk it, but it's far too dangerous. =
Severus looked at her for a moment, "Oh for - It really means that much to you?" Before she could answer he left the room. Following him bemusedly, Bella saw him vanish into his storeroom. He reappeared a few moments later with a small flask, which he threw at her. Catching it automatically she looked at him questioningly.
"It's something I was working on for the headmaster. A disguise potion. You drink it and anyone who sees you sees a totally average person, conjured from his or her own mind. You don't stand out and no one can really describe you afterwards. You become nondescript, able to blend into any crowd. Unfortunately it can be easily overcome. Any decent wizard could cast an anti-glamour spell and the effect would be nullified. It should work sufficiently well against the children for him to wander around the Hogwarts grounds though."
Bella slipped the flask into her pocket and ran across to hug Severus.
=That's fantastic. How much does he need to take? How long does it last? Can you any any more? =
Severus smiled, "One question at a time. A glassful should last about 3 hours. The more he drinks, the longer it will last and yes, I can easily make more. It's not a particularly difficult potion but it's limitations mean that it's not of any real use to the majority of people."
Harry was on his way to Hagrid's hut when he heard the noise coming from the Quidditch field. Looking up he saw three black robed figures soaring and swooping around one another in an intricate dance. He could see a ball being passed between them at high-speed as they played what appeared to be a variant of Quidditch. He headed towards them, his attention so fixed on the players that he almost ran into Professor Snape before he noticed him.
"Professor Snape, what are you doing here?" he asked, his earlier excitement at spotting the game waning under the force of Snape's glare.
"I'm trying to ensure that Madam Pomfrey doesn't have to spend her Christmas holiday putting certain members of the faculty back together again," he said, his lip curling into a familiar sneer.
"Who are they?" Harry asked.
"Professors Pettigrew and Lupin," Snape informed him curtly.
"And the third one?" Harry pressed.
"Your godfather," Snape answered, his voice filling with contempt.
"Sirius?" Harry said excitedly.
"Unfortunately."
Harry continued to gaze at the three figures, "Do you think they'd come down so I can say hi?"
Snape fixed him with another glare and then raised his wand, sending a shower of green sparks up into the air and amongst the three players.
Turning to see what Severus wanted, Bella saw that he was no longer alone. Signalling to the others, she shot towards the two spectators, pulling up at the last moment to land gracefully in front of them.
=Hi, Harry, = she signed. =Want to join us? =
Harry grinned enthusiastically, "Really?"
=Of course. Why not? I'm sure Siri would really appreciate it. = She paused, =Professor Snape did tell you that's who I was playing with, right? =
"Yeah. Isn't it dangerous for him to be out here though?" Harry asked.
=Not really. Professor Snape gave him a potion to conceal his identity, you won't recognise him.=
"Really? Wow, that's really nice of you, Professor!" Harry ed aed at Severus in amazement.
"I'm sure that if he gets into any trouble, the headmaster will send me to get him out of it again. I'd rather not spend my holiday traipsing around after him just because he got careless. The potion should reduce the amount of time I have to waste on him," Severus drawled.
"So what are the rules?" Harry asked, turning back to Arabella.
Shaking her head slightly at her lover's performance, she thought for a moment. =OK; well now there's four of us we can split in to proper teams. One Keeper, one Chaser, two Beaters. One team tries to score and the other has to stop them. We'll swap halfway through. Get your broom and go up and join them, I'll grab a bludger and a couple of bats. =
Harry turned and pointed his wand in the direction of Gryffindor tower. "Accio broom." The two professors watched as the broom flew out of the window, across the grounds and into his hand. Mounting up, he took off and headed towards the others.
"See you in a minute, Professor," he called.
Arabella opened the box of Quidditch equipment and carefully released one of the bludgers. Holding it tightly, she slipped the bats under one arm and, holding the broom with her free hand, took off towards the three waiting players.
Soon the four of them were involved in a fast and furious contest of skill. Remus was acting as keeper with Arabella as his beater, dedicated to trying to stop Harry, in the chaser's role, from scoring. Siri was backing up his godson and wielding the beater's bat with more enthusiasm than was probably good for him. They had been playing about half an hour when disaster struck. Severus saw the whole thing from his position on the ground. Harry was nearly through to the hoops when Arabella struck the bludger straight towards him. Using a move he'd copied from Draco Malfoy, of all people, Harry allowed himself to roll until he was upside-down, the bludger passing safely through the space he had been occupying only moments earlier. Unfortunately Remus hadn't seen the bludger, which was now heading straight for him since Harry was between him and Arabella. Sirius was facing the other direction and Harry was still righting himself, so Arabella was the only one of the four players who could see what was about to happen. Severus winced as he realised that an accident was probably inevitable. He drew his wand, hoping that he might be able to do something to protect Remus from a serious injury. Even if Arabella had had her hands free, it was unlikely that Remus would have seen her signing. Inside her head, however, she was screaming a warning as she dived towards him. Remus turned towards her and saw the bludger; he swerved sharply to the left and lost his grip on the broom. Time seemed to slow for the horrified witnesses as their friend plummeted towards the ground. Suddenly his descent slowed as if something had caught him and was lowering him to the ground. Looking down, Arabella saw that Severus had his wand out and was aiming it at Remus. The effort of levitating a person falling from such a height was clearly talking its toll on the Potion's Master. She saw him stagger slightly and support himself with one hand braced against the stand. Quickly she drew her own wand and added to Severus' efforts, out of the corner of her eye she could see Sirius doing the same.
As soon as Remus was safely on the ground, Severus strode over to him and knelt down at his side. He ran his hands over Remus' arms and legs, checking for broken bones.
"I'm fine, Sev. Thanks to you," Remus assured him
Severus looked at him, his eyes shadowed with the fear he had felt when he saw his lover hurtling towards the ground. "You could have been killed, you idiot. If you can't manage to stay on a broomstick, then you should stay on the ground instead of swooping around like a bloody maniac," he ranted.
"I take it he's not seriously hurt then," came Sirius' voice from behind them. Severus looked over his shoulder and saw the three of them standing there wearing identical expressions of concern.
"I'm fine," Remus repeated. "Really, I feel like I've been hit by a bus but there's no permanent damage. The three of you saw to that. Now someone help me up please. It's cold and wet lying down here in the snow."
Sirius held one of his arms and Severus the other as they lifted him to his feet.
"Are you really OK?" Harry asked worriedly.
"I'll be fine," Remus said, reaching out to pat him on the shoulder reassuringly and totally ruining the effect when the movement made him wince. "Although I probably should go and see Madam Pomfrey just to be on the safe side," he added.
"But you can't," Harry said. "She's gone to visit some relatives, she won't be back until the New Year. I saw her leave."
"Relax Harry," Sirius said. "Professor Snape is a perfectly adequate substitute for Madam Pomfrey, all that work with potions had to be good for something. He and Arabella can help Remus back to his room while you and I go and see if we can scrounge some food from the House Elves." He put his arm around Harry's shoulder and began to lead him away, casting a quick look back over his shoulder to check that Remus was OK with this. Remus mouthed "Thanks" at him before limping off supported by his lovers.
Remus was taken back to Severus' quarters so that the healing potions would be on hand if they were needed. His lovers made sure that he changed out of his wet clothes into some pyjamas and then insisted on tucking him into bed. While Severus went back into his classroom to fetch something for Remus' aches and pains, Arabella stayed with the patient.
=How did you come to fall off your broom anyway, Remus? You're not a bad flyer and that bludger never touched you, thank Merlin, = she wondered.
"No, thank you actually," Remus said. "I heard you scream at me to look out, I turned around and saw the bludger. That's why I fell - the shock of seeing you, not the bludger."
=You heard me? But how could you possibly hear me, I didn't say any... = she trailed off and looked at Remus for a moment in shock.
*Can you hear me Remus? * she thought.
"Yes," he whispered stunned. "Yes I can. How are you doing that?"
=I don't know. Can you reply the same way? =
Remus concentrated on her face, *Bella? *
=I heard you, Remy. I really heard you. Do you think… = She stopped signing and concentrated on her other lover, *Severus. *
They heard swift footsteps and the door flew open.
"Bella?" Severus said shocked.
*You can hear me too, can't you? * she thought, making sure she was looking at him so he could see she wasn't moving her lips.
"I can hear you perfectly," he said, walking over to where she was sitting. He knelt in front of her, "How on earth -"
*That's what Remy said too, * she thought. *I don't know how I'm doing it, I just am. You're both getting this, right? *
"Yes."
"Yes."
Both men answered simultaneously.
"That's amazing, Bella," Severus said, taking her hands in his own.
"Not only that but she can hear us too," Remus added. "Try it."
*You can hear me? * Severus asked.
*Yes, love, I can. Try and talk to Remus the same way, * she asked.
*Remus, can you hear me too? * Severus thought.
*Bloody hell! * Remus' reply echoed inside his head, surprising him into laughter.
"My thought's exactly. Does anyone have the faintest idea how this happened?" Severus asked.
"Not the faintest," Remus said.
Arabella shook her head slowly.
"Bella? Do you have some kind of theory?" Severus asked again.
*Not really. It's just - We've been together less than three days and the three of us have suddenly developed this new skill. Doesn't that strike you as being a little .. coincidental? * she said.
"Now that you mention it, it does seem probable that the two events are linked somehow," Severus said slowly. "Remus, have you ever read anything about triads who had special powers?"
"I think I remember something, but the book inferred that they were drawn together because of their powers, rather than the powers being some kind of consequence," Remus said. "We should probably do some research."
*We could ask Albus. He would probably know if it had happened in his lifetime. Can we leave it a couple of days though; I want to see exactly what we can do first. Besides, I was planning on doing some Christmas shopping tomorrow, * Bella thought.
"It couldn't hurt to leave it a couple of days. Besides, then we'd be able to give Albus a much better description of what is happening," Severus said.
"What exactly did you want to try, Bella?" Remus asked.
*I wanted to know if it was just words that we could send, or if we could maybe do something like - this. * She stopped trying to send specific thoughts and instead imagined Severus, wearing nothing but his robe, which was open to the waist, handcuffed to a chair in his classroom while Remus knelt at his feet and sucked his cock. Severus' head was thrown back in ecstasy and he was trying to buck up into the other man's mouth, his movements hampered by the restraints. She looked Remus in the eye and raised one eyebrow.
"Bloody hell, you have to warn me before you do something like that," Remus growled.
*It worked then? * she thought, this time sending to both of them.
"Oh yes," he answered, unable to shake the delicious image from his mind.
"What worked?" Severus asked, confused.
She looked at him, changing the image in her mind so that he was still handcuffed but this time he was bent over his desk while Remus fucked
Severus swore softly and she saw his face flush. "You are an evil woman!"
Bella smiled seductively, *What are the two of you planning on doing about it? * When identical smirks appeared on both their faces she realised that now the two of them could communicate silently with one another, she was probably in a lot of trouble.
*What a way to go though, * she thought, causing her lovers to laugh as they tumbled onto the bed.
