~~~ QUIDDITCH ~~~
Sometime later, Hermione emerged from the Finnegan library looking triumphant. To surround the green tholus, and with the aid of Fawkes, she cast a red ball charm and then contracted it slightly. There was a slight pop and the three comatose participants were no longer held inside an enchanted ball. Ronald quickly altered his Mobiliarbus to a Mobilicorpus and caught them so that they could be gently lowered towards the floor. Just before they touched down Seamus conjured a deep mattress; Dean then made a duvet and put it over the top of them.
Two or three hours later, Draco was the first to recover and gently unplugged himself from his lover. As Draco ate the proffered chocolate Harry began to stir. Fairly soon Harry was disconnected from Ginevra and he was eating the revivifying sweet substance as well. Ginevra was now in a much worse state so a worried Ronald side-along apparated her to the mages’ hospital to be with her mates. A partially-sedated Astoria was waiting there too.
~~~ REASONING ~~~
Harry was fairly sore front and back, but was recovering. At least enough to join Draco and the others in a short conference when Ernie flooed in from the hospital to give a report.
“It’s going to take the two buried ones a couple of weeks before they will be well enough to be allowed out,” Ernie informed the gathering “And then they’ll need to recuperate. “The others should be fit enough to play by tomorrow evening, thanks to your antidote, Draco. However, Ginny is a different matter, her recovery will be a month at least.”
“That won’t be in time for their match against the Wigan Wallbangers,” Dean informed the group. “That’s the match the heavy betting has been on. Everybody expects the Harpies to walk all over the Wallbangers; so if they lose, the punters will make a mint.”
“We know my Father is short of money,” put in Draco. “Perhaps he hopes to make up some of his losses this way. I wonder how we could spike his guns.”
“Let’s get the Harpies manager involved, shall we?” suggested Harry, still squirming in discomfort.
They got in touch with Gordon Goodfellow and he flooed over to join them.
“It was a home match for us,” GG informed them. “Now I have no stadium and only half a team. Some of the substitutes are playable but with Ginny hors de combat and our reserve seeker dead I’m in a real fix. Not only that but our reserve goalie is not up to scratch and the other body was our keeper.”
“Let me contact Hogwarts, GG,” suggested Seamus. “I’m sure the headmistress would let the sixth and seventh year construction students build you a new stadium. It would be a good training exercise for them.”
“Harry and I were reasonable seekers at school,” said Draco. “We’re flying fit; we have to be, to be Aurors. Give us a trial and pick the best one.”
GG’s eyes lit up. “Both of you could have had a good career in Quidditch, if only you had wished to. Various other managers were willing to give their eye teeth to have you placed in their team. I like your suggestion, yes please.”
“My Ron was a reasonable keeper at Hogwarts and helps out the present coach there, give him a try against your reserve and see if he’ll do,” suggested Hermione.
“That seems a workable plan; all we need now is a pitch to practice on.”
“How about the school one, during the day? We’ve no matches booked until after yours and as I know the assistant coach I’m sure I can wangle it.”
“Thanks Ron!” GG looked very relieved.
~~~ WEDNESDAY ~~~
The Minister and Chief Auror held a conference with Draco and Harry. Our duo was both highly embarrassed when they related what had happened; even more so when they retold the legend of Catlin of the Hundred Husbands and their antics within the green bubble.
“Well done boys, thanks for saving Ginny,” said Arthur, ignoring their embarrassment with a pleased and relieved smile on his face. “Does that mean you’ll be marrying Ginny, Harry? The whole wizarding world has been expecting the announcement for years now.”
“I wish you would, Harry,” added Kingsley. “Arthur wants me to be his Chief of Security so as to tame the Unmentionables, you and Mac are the only ones I trust to become my Head Auror. Politically you’d have more clout. The only snag is the Wizengamot insisting that a married man be put in that post. And Mac seems not to have a girlfriend either.”
Harry and Draco looked shocked.
Kingsley held up his hands in mock surrender, but continued: “I know your deep love for each other and one or two mages support your stance too, especially the Irish ones, but we have to be realistic. The majority of the Wizengamot is deeply reactionary and there is no way we can get round their views; your claque still commands too few votes. Unless, that is, Arthur becomes another Voldie and removes all the antediluvians.”
Arthur looked alarmed and then chuckled when he realised Kingsley was joking.
“You getting hitched, would be the solution, you know,” added Arthur, “even if the four of you carried on as usual afterwards. I want Draco as Head of Forensics; that job’s a hard enough idea to get into the Wizengamot’s collective mind, but your father’s reputation coupled with an unmarried head of department, I’ve no chance. They look back at Dumbledore’s record every time. Whilst they agree he did great things, they disliked his modus operandi and blame it on him being single. Harry, being his protégé, despite saving their precious arses, would be looked upon as being equally untrustworthy. Now a married Harry would receive the suggested promotion with honours. Please consider this carefully, please, please, please.”
“Other people’s promotions depend on yours too. Once I’m Head of Security we’ll be able to correlate all the information coming in. So by coming to some arrangement with Ginny and Astoria you would be helping other deserving people gain recognition, as well.” Kingsley adopted a wise and pleading look. “Please don’t reject this idea out of hand, think it over. Don’t forget that as Heads of Department and Wizengamot members in your own right you will have special reporting and guidance facilities to the Wizengamot and that, hopefully, will help to liberalise them slowly.”
Draco and Harry had a long internal conference whilst two anxious elders looked on.
“We understand what you are saying Uncle and can sympathise with your point of view. Once Ginny is recovered we will discuss it with the girls,” said Draco, defensively. “At the moment that is all we can promise. Good?”
“Okay!” Kingsley looked very relieved. “The next thing is about your leave. We know you are both dedicated workers, but we now owe you nearly three months’ worth of holidays. You really must take some time off.”
“I agree with Kingsley. Dedication’s all right, but you can go stale if you don’t take time out occasionally.”
Harry looked scandalised: “We ring the changes between here, Hogwarts and the Trust. Academia and policing are poles apart and Harco is mostly supervision. That keeps us au-fait. Besides, there are still too many of the satraps about wreaking havoc, as the two recent Irish incidents show.”
Draco was desperately mentally-signalling to his lover’s high dudgeon. He got through eventually and Harry shut up.
“Would really serious Quidditch practice count?” Draco asked.
“Of course it would and GG will be eternally grateful, too.” Kingsley replied with a sly smile.
Draco had calmed Harry down somewhat: “Fine! Thanks! We’ll still have to take the occasional lesson, but that’ll be at school anyway.”
“My money’s on the Harpies winning, so don’t let us down.” Arthur suddenly looked horrified: “You won’t tell Molly that I said that will you, please?”
“NO UNCLE ARTHUR, YOUR SECRET IS SAFE WITH US.” The duo smiled mischievously at him as they departed.
~~~ THURSDAY ~~~
The week before May Day they were at Hogwarts. “It’s a good thing there are no imminent exams, Professors,” Minerva remarked, with her usual grim smile. “Suddenly the Quidditch stands are every scholar’s ideal place to do homework; essays always seem to use Quidditch metaphors to explain difficult concepts. I shall be quite relieved when Seamus’s and Dean’s students have completed their project.”
“We understand that GG has offered the school its own stand at the new ground,” said Harry, knowing the headmistress’s hidden love of the game. “He’s hinted that we might like to make a Saturday only portal to there.”
“That’s as maybe, Professors.” McGonagall shook herself out of her Quidditch reverie. “I do hope it won’t affect your teaching of those new potions and shields the seventh-years. Hermione would be displeased too; I understand she has you booked for some undergraduate lectures.”
“Would you like to inspect our departments’ syllabi and their achievements under the elfin professors to date, Headmistress?” Draco asked, with an arch smile.
“Touché, Professor Malfoy. You know I have no need. Both of your many students’ OWL’s and NEWT’s passes exceed previous results for a long time back. And, I might add, your exploits elsewhere add lustre to Hogwarts’s prestige worldwide. It was those results that helped me with the last governor’s meeting. I had quite an argument on my hands.”
“Why was that?”
“It’s really about your personal status not your academic one.” Minerva glanced at the two previous headmaster’s portraits. “You see my two predecessors were not married and the governors are worried about single men and responsibility. I suspect that there’s some worry about you two subverting the students by your life-style, as well.”
“We never even thought about it, Minerva.” Harry looked shocked.
“I am not my father, Headmistress. I would never stoop to importuning, and of my charges, that would be unthinkable.”
“I do not doubt your probity for even half a second. However, leadership by example works on many levels, and your obvious love for one another is part of that equation. You have my fullest support and the academic results bear that out. However, there is one very practical reason for urging you both to reproduce. That of the very small magical gene pool. Removing your especially strong genes from that pool permanently will greatly reduce the magical society’s chances of survival in future generations. I do wish you would consider this very seriously. Anyway, enough of this fencing, you have students to teach and I have a couple of disciplines to dish out.”
Harry and Draco gave Minerva mock bows as they left her office and Dumbledore’s portrait could be heard chuckling as they descended the spiral staircase.
~~~ THOUGHTS ~~~
“This ‘seriously consider’ talk is almost like being back as a student, isn’t it Draco?”
“Hmm, I suppose it is. She has a point about the gene pool, not one I’d really thought about before. It’s almost like one of her naughty-boy tellings-off.”
“Um … Yes … I feel quite chastened. I suppose we ought to mull over the possibilities. Let’s not become too morbid about it; our extra Quidditch makes the difference, doesn’t it?”
Fawkes hovered over them, wishing they would accept their fate, but not interfering at the moment.
“I’ll say! C’mon Lover time to get our practice clothes on.”
Harry and Draco launched themselves off their balcony a few minutes later. The first run through took quite a long time as the two professor/aurors were slightly out of practice and the snitch kept on avoiding them at the last minute. GG was tolerant, but dropped a hint or two about extra training. The result was that the Blakes went home, occluded Chantry Cottage’s wards; lit them up inside and spent four night hours snitch chasing.
~~~ FRIDAY ~~~
The following day GG praised their increased ability, but suggested still more practice.
The Blakes were exhausted by the end of the first week’s training; however, they had to admit their reactions had improved greatly. Having to attend the May Day festivities on Saturday gave them no time to practice and little rest.
That evening the Blakes had recovered enough to create a new public portal from the spare portal place at the Fortress to the site of the new stand. It enabled easy access for the building teams and the adult Harpies players could secretly commute to their temporary training ground without being sussed. The students had been sworn to secrecy about the team practicing, on pain of not being given permission to use the school’s new stand for the forthcoming match. Also, the Slytherin and other known sympathisers’ mail was discreetly monitored to ensure no leaks.
~~~ A LATE MAY THURSDAY ~~~
Teddy’s sixth birthday party was the next item on the agenda – many of his magical and muggle school-friends were invited. Draco, Harry, Ginevra and Astoria were given the tasks of organising the unruly mob of children. All sighing in relief after the participants had departed. It took the elves two hours to clear up the mess.
Almost four weeks of concentrated quidditch practice and a couple of days before the match when GG called all the team together. The recovered players were all in their allotted places bar Ginevra; Ronald was made the keeper. Harry and Draco had already agreed that the Potter skill level was superior, so they were not in the least bit surprised when GG selected Harry.
GG held a press conference on the day before the match, [Friday] with Ronald and Harry present. Draco, Astoria and Hermione were there also; their job, alongside Fawkes, was to enforce a non-publishing charm until the match was in progress. The reporters were allowed to publicise the new stadium and say how well the Hogwarts students had rebuilt and improved it. The scribes were also allowed to hint at some new and unexpected team members - without naming them.
The Prophet’s headlines ran: ‘New Stadium and New Team for Harpies’; ensuring a record turnout at the ground. The adherents of the dark way pooh-poohed the announcement as hype and so no laying-off of bets took place. Before the match took place Draco went to the top of the new Hogwarts’s stand and ensured an absolute all-round view. He and Harry had agreed to cheat slightly and had secretly let the Wallbangers know what was happening. Both teams agreed to call it a friendly match, but only reveal it on the following day once all the betting had been paid out. Suitable headlines to be released by both teams simultaneously.
~~~ SATURDAY – STADIUM ~~~
The match was by no means a forgone conclusion. The Wallbangers’ seeker stuck to Harry like glue. Draco spotted the snitch quite a few times and transmitted to Harry where it was. Both seekers set off in pursuit, but the snitch had moved again. The score was ninety to seventy in favour of the Wallbangers when the snitch appeared over Draco’s head. He was tempted to snatch it himself, but managed to convey to Harry where it was. Harry made a reverse loop losing the Wallbangers’ seeker for a couple of seconds. That was enough for Harry to charge the Hogwarts stand and whip the snitch from its summit; giving the Harpies the match.
The two managers met whilst the cheering crowds were fêting the winning team.
“Despite Harry’s and Draco’s mind-meld, I really don’t think it made any difference to the result,” said the Wallbangers’ manager magnanimously. “It was Harry’s reverse loop that won the day. I’m willing to keep this as one of the league results if you are.”
“If you are quite sure, I’m willing to go along with that,” replied GG: “Although, if you have second thoughts by tomorrow, we can stick by our original idea.”
“I doubt it very much. You see, some of my Welsh relatives were harmed by the Seignior recently; so this is an ideal way of getting back at him. If we declare a friendly he might just be able to place those bets again. Anyway, now both Harry and Draco are registered players, I hope to ask Draco to help out at our next match. Our seeker is going off to have a child and some of our players are ex-Slytherins, they didn’t all become satraps you know, but it would give them a boost to have Draco playing for us.”
“Okay, just let me know if you change your mind. It’s too early in the season for the result to make too much of a difference in our league placings.”
So it was that Harry had three more games as the Harpies seeker and Draco got five playing for the Wallbangers. After that they helped both teams out, keeping fit with an amount of training as well as their Auror and occasional professorial duties.
~~~ 1ST SATURDAY IN JUNE ~~~
At the Parish Dance in the barn – on a floral theme – Harry’s lover was highly embarrassed. As it was his birthday; [this year they had agreed to have separate celebrations for a change] during the interval, the Dumbledorians staged a series of cameo scenes from Draco’s life. Narcissa had supplied them with anecdotes of his life before Hogwarts and couple spats between Harry and Draco were dramatized. There were eight scenes in all; representing each three-year period in his life so far – Draco threatened to get Harry back when his mate’s twenty-fourth birthday came around.
~~~ THURSDAY ~~~
It was Molly who led the next attack about marriage.
She had a recovering Ginevra at the Burrow and was mollycoddling her; of course Astoria was resident there also.
“I know the healers said you might miss a period, Ginny, but have you considered what to do if Harry has impregnated you,” the Weasley matriarch said with a wily smile. “All of Magicdom has expected you four to sort yourselves out and become two married couples. Yes, I know about your loving attachments to each other, but maybe you could use this miss-happening to advantage. I really want a lot of grandchildren; you know; Fleur is the only one to oblige so far. Merlin only knows when Hermione and Ron will decide to give me some little ones to cuddle; if ever.”
“Aw Mum, stop fussing. I’ve only missed out once so far, so it doesn’t mean anything really. You know what the healer said.” Ginevra let out a diplomatic yawn.
“Yes, but please consider it,” said Molly; over her shoulder as she left Ginevra’s bedroom. “Astoria; don’t keep her chatting; she needs her sleep.”
“Yes, Mum.” Astoria tried to look meek.
A minute later Ginevra opened her eyes and whispered. “Has she gone?”
Astoria nodded, smiling. “You know Gin dear, it would be very nice to have a baby to look after; much better than adopting one, like we discussed. My Mum’s always on about our bloodline being extinguished, it’s a pity that Daphne was killed in the battle, or she would still be in the marriage market and have saved us this angst, maybe we could muddy the waters a bit. What do you think?”
“We don’t know I’m having one yet, but it might be an idea. However, I’m not sure about marriage to Harry, or any other male for that matter. If it’s true then we could mother the baby together, just like we do with Teddy.”
“We still could. I doubt Harry will stop wanting to be with Draco anytime soon. I know that I want to be with you always. Us Slytherins take a pragmatic view to marriage, give the family name an heir and a spare and then do what you like. Anyway; what was it like with Harry?”
“I was more than a bit worked up by the cantrip you know. I felt like I could eat him all up, starting with his prick and working onwards. You can give me a greater thrill and I know you do it because you love me. That makes a lot of difference. It was okay, I suppose, but not anything to be indulged in regularly, if ever again. At least I know what it feels like. You’re much better than him, you know what I like.”
“Could you do it again, if it was necessary?”
“I s’pose so, but I’d rather not. I like Harry as a brother, he’s caring, fun to be with and interesting to talk to, but his big appendage does not turn me on in any way.”
“So Mum’s idea might just work then. What does Draco’s implement look like?”
“Much the same as Harry’s; only with fair curls around it. I got a couple of glimpses when we were in the bubble. It’d probably do an adequate job, if you could bear it.”
“Mmm, well! It’d get our mothers off our backs; you know how they go on, don’t you?”
Ginevra nodded sympathetically to her lover.

A week or so later, Dudley and Millicent had their legs pulled unmercifully at his birthday do at the Farmer Arms. It had become very obvious they were deeply enamoured.
