Chapter 13
--
Halloween morning dawned gray and overcast, a cold drizzle occasionally
breaking through the dark clouds overhead.
Unlike most mornings, Raithos had risen quite early. Today he was going to see his father for the
first time in what felt like ages. A
small part of him was surprised to find that he’d missed him greatly over the
past two months. Raithos had never had
a real family, and wasn’t used to being away from people he loved as much as
his father.
“Alright there, Raith?” Draco asked quietly as he came up
behind him and wrapped his arms around his waist.
“Just going through the things that’ll happen tonight, ‘Co,”
Raithos replied. “I’m glad you’ll be
there with me, love. You’re my rock,
you know.”
Draco smiled and planted a soft kiss at the nape of his
lover’s neck. “I know. Now, enough of the sap, let’s get
moving. There’s a lot to do before
tonight. Oh, and I have something to
show you.”
--
After a quick shower, Raithos and Draco dressed and made
their way to the common room. Draco led
Raithos over to three fifth years sitting near the fire. They stood and bowed before Raithos, giving
up their seats on the couch for him.
“This is Mars, Blade, and Kou. They know they have to wait until they are seventeen to join you,
but they came up to me a few days ago with an idea for your Mark. I have to say, it’s pretty good, and I think
you should have a look at it.”
The three fifth years produced a piece of parchment and
handed it over to Raithos. His eyes
widened slightly as he looked at it, then looked up at the Slytherins kneeling
in front of him.
“This is quite good.”
It was a silver dagger with a black hilt in the shape of a
skull. Around the blade spiraled a
black snake with red eyes, jaw openand and fangs ready to strike. The snake and skull were reminiscent of his
father’s mark.
“How old are they?” he asked.
“Fifteen. They won’t
be ready for two more years.”
“Well, I suppose you will have to wait to join me fully, but
when you do, this is the mark you will be receiving. You’ve done well,” Raith said, eyes shining.
“What will you call it, Raith?” Draco asked.
“The Black Mark.”
--
Later that afternoon, Blaise and Pansy joined Draco and
Raithos in their room. Blaise and Pansy
were coming along with the two tonight, and would receive the Black Mark along
with Draco. Lord Voldemort himself
would brand it on his son.
“Now, I know you have passed most of the trials for my
father already, but I must ask you three to complete two more before I can Mark
you,” Raithos said to the three Slytherins.
“The first should be no problem.
You will perform the Killing Curse on a victim of my choosing. I know you are all quite proficient with
that particular curse, so I expect no difficulties there. The second may not be as easily
accomplished. As you know, I am quite
the Legillimens Master. My father had
informed me that spies had be somewhat of an issue in the previous war, and we
came up with a way to eliminate them altogether. You will be required to submit your mind to me willingly, so that
I may see your true loyalties.”
Draco bristled slightly at that.
“Pansy, Blaise, you will meet us outside Hogwarts grounds on
the edge of the Forbidden Forest at exactly 8 PM. Do not be late, I will not wait for you.”
They bowed and left the room.
“’Co, before you say anything, hear me out. I know what your true loyalties are, always
have. I’ve no doubt whom it is you
follow. And I know you really hate the
idea of someone rooting around in your mind, it’s a very invasive feeling. I should know. I promise you that I will only check for feelings of
loyalty. I’ll not invade your privacy
like that, I respect you way too much,” Raithos said quietly. “It has to be done, though. The others will see it a sign of weakness if
I let you slide on this, you know that.”
“I know, Raith. I
know. But I don’t have to like it. I fully expect you to make this up to me
later on. I’m giving up an awful lot
here, and I don’t do that for people.
No one but you.”
“Thank you, ‘Co,” Raithos murmured, moving closer to
Draco. He placed a soft kiss on his
lips, and whispered, “I love you.”
“I love you too.”
--
At eight o’clock exactly, Raithos, Draco, Pansy, and Blaise
apparated to Riddle Mansion. They
walked quietly to the entrance of the Hall, and once again Raithos found himself
standing outside of those great doors, with Draco at his right.
“Isn’t this were we’re supposed to have some disparagingly
sarcastic exchange?” Raithos asked lightly.
“I believe it is.
All to end with a completely inappropriate remark from you. Last time I think it ended with some remark
about chocolate cake, didn’t it?”
“Mmm, chocolate cake.
Remind me to get some from the kitchen after we’re done.”
Pansy and Blaise looked at each other disbelievingly. They were absolutely terrified of the people
that lay in that room, and here were Raithos and Draco, joking about like
nothing was going on.
They turned around when they heard a hissing noise, to see
Nagini slithering towards them. She
coiled up Raithos’ leg to settle around his upper body.
::They are waiting for you, young Lord::
::Thank you, Nagini.
We’ll be off then:: Raithos hissed back.
“Fuck, you just had to go and do that now, didn’t you? Now I’m going to be all hot and bothered
through the entire ceremony,” Draco grumbled.
Raithos snickered, then set his face into a cold, confident
expression.
“And we’re off,” he whispered, throwing open the doors.
--
“My son, how good of you to return,” Lord Voldemort said as
Raithos led his followers to the center of the room. The three other Slytherins bowed as Raithos approached the throne
and planted a soft kiss on his father’s forehead, their standard greeting.
“It is good to see you again, father. I have missed you these past two months,”
Raithos said politely.
Lord Voldemort smiled slightly, and then turned his
attention to Draco. “Draco, step
forward. You know that you needn’t
abase yourself like that, a simple bow will suffice.”
Draco stood and joined Raithos in front of the Dark
Lord. “My Lord,” he intoned, bowing slightly.
Voldemort stood and addressed his Death Eaters.
“Tonight, a new group will rise amongst us. Tonight, my son will be Marked as their
leader. You have all seen his
power. You have all given him your
allegience. Now your sons and daughters
will do the same,” he announced.
Turning to his son, he said, “My son, are you ready?”
“Yes father. I am.”
Voldemort took hold of his son’s left arm, pushing back his
sleeve to reveal pale skin. He pressed
the tip of his wand to the soft skin of his forearm, and whispered, “Morulus meta!”
Raithos stood perfectly still as the searing pain burned
through him. He gave no indication that
anything was happening at all, face retaining the cold mask it had worn since
he’d stepped foot in the Hall. After
twenty seconds or so, Voldemort removed his wand, and the Black Mark was
revealed. Voldemort turned his son by
the shoulders and presented his arm to all in the Hall.
“Observe, the Black Mark!”
All the Death Eaters bowed silently, showing their respect
and loyalty to Raithos.
“My son, you may initiate your first followers.”
“Draco,” Raithos said softly, but sternly.
“Yes, My Lord,” Draco answered, just as softly, moving to
stand in front of his newly marked lover.
“You have already passed your trials in front of this
congregation. Do you submit yourself
willingly to me and to my father? Do
you pledge your loyalty to our cause?”
“I do.”
“Legillimens!”
As promised, Raithos only searched out feelings of loyalty or
disloyalty, steering clear of anything personal. When he found what he was looking for, he pulled back, and
whispered softly “Thank you, love.” He
knew it had been very hard for Draco to allow such an invasion.
Raising his voice, he said, “Draco Malfoy, you shall be the
first of my followers to receive this Mark from me. You shall be the first of my Shadows. The name is so very fitting for us, for we will be the Shadows of
this world. Ever present, all knowing,
we will strike down those who oppose us with deadly accuracy. No one shall be safe from us, for shadows
are everywhere. They are
inescapable.” He gently took Draco’s
left hand, pulling back the sleeve to reveal his forearm. He lightly brushed the skin, and looked into
Draco’s gray eyes.
“My first, and my most loyal,” he whispered, covering
Draco’s forearm with his palm. “Morulus
meta.”
Only a tightening around Draco’s eyes betrayed his cool
exterior as the pain washed over him.
Raithos smiled at him slightly when it was over, bursting inwardly with
pride and love. Draco moved to stand at
Raithos’ right hand, where he belonged.
“Blaise Zabini. Step
forward,” Raithos commanded. As Blaise
moved, Raithos motioned toward one of the Death Eaters standing guard at a
door. Raithos looked into Blaise’s blue
eyes. “Legillimens!”
As with Draco, he found only loyalty. Pleased, he pulled back. “You have been found loyal. Only one trial remains before you join my ranks.” The door to the side opened, and a bound
figure was brought out. It was Colin
Creevey, the sixth year Gryffindor who’d followed Raithos around with his
camera since his first year at Hogwarts.
He’d been one of the more annoying pests since Raithos denounced his
former identity. Collin couldn’t seem
to grasp the fact that Harry Potter was truly gone, and Raithos decided this
would be a wonderful opportunity to rid himself of the skinny boy.
Blaise stepped up before Collin, the very picture of
confidence and pride. He raised his
wand, hand steady.
“Avada Kedavra!”
he yelled, and Collin dropped lifelessly to the ground. Blaise moved to the edge of the dais, where
Raithos stood, and bowed.
“Do you submit yourself willingly to me and to my
father? Do you pledge your loyalty to
our cause?” Raithos asked again.
“I do, My Lord.”
“Morulus meta!”
Blaise closed his eyes against the pain, but made no other
sign of weakness. When it was over, he
moved to stand amongst the Death Eaters.
“Pansy Parkinson.
Step forward,” Raithos commanded.
He again motioned to the Death Eater guarding the door. He delved into Pansy’s mind, and again found
her loyal.
A struggling figure was brought to kneel before her. Brown curly hair was visible around the gag,
and scared eyes looked up at Pansy. It
was Hermione Granger.
Pansy smiled coldly as she raised her wand and spoke the
curse. Hermione’s body toppled over
bonelessly.
Raithos smiled as she walked up and bowed to him.
“Do you submit yourself willingly to me and to my
father? Do you pledge your loyalty to our
cause?” Raithos asked again.
“I do, My Lord.”
“Morulus meta!”
After she was Marked, Pansy strode proudly over to stand
with Blaise.
“Congratulations my son,” Voldemort spoke quietly to
Raithos, placing a hand on his shoulder.
“You have proven wise in your choice of followers. All of them are strong and loyal, and will
serve you well.”
He turned back to his Death Eaters. “Let’s adjourn to the dining hall, shall
we?”
“Pops,” Raithos said quietly, as the robed figures filed
out. “I’ll need to speak to you about
the werewolf before we leave tonight.
As well as setting up the next initiation date. The rest of the Slytherin seventh years turn
seventeen before Christmas.”
“Of course, my son.
We’ll find somewhere to talk after we eat. But for now, I’m quite hungry.
I always am after such a terrific show…”
Raithos laughed as they walked out, following Draco and
Lucius to the food.
