Unexpected Obsessions
Chapter 14: Making New Friends
"Hermione dear, hurry up. Lily and Ginny will be here to get you in a few minutes. You've been in the bathroom for nearly an hour."
"I'm coming Severus. Don't get your panties in a bunch."
"Excuse me? Don't get my what in a what?"
"Your panties. It's a muggle expression."
"I'm sure it is."
Severus was standing impatiently outside the bathroom waiting on his bride-to-be to return so he could make better use of its facilities. Hermione was on her way to her bridal shower with Lily and Ginny as her captors. It was being held at Godric's Hollow, and all their girlfriends, along with Severus' mother and sister had been invited. Prisca and Viscera had respectfully declined, but Prisca had sent an owl letting her know she would be there a week before the wedding and that she had a gift for her.
The past month had went by in a blur. James and Lily had settled in to their new lives, as well as Harry getting used to using the words mum and dad on an hourly basis. Albus suggested they drink an aging potion to make them appear twenty years older so that they would all feel more comfortable. James' hair changed a bit, and he developed tiny crows feet around his eyes. Lily didn't change much except for developing laugh lines around her mouth. Harry didn't feel like he was older than his parents now and thankfully no one teased him about it.
The Weasley's all came to visit at Hogwarts where they met Lily and James. They were grateful to them for the hospitality they had shown Harry over the years. They were heartbroken to learn of Ron's death, but Albus insisted they do not try a counter curse. Arthur insisted as well. They really didn't know the exact time they had died, and if they brought them back, their case against Macnair, and Devon Carmina would be lost. In the end, everyone agreed it was for the best.
Severus had been waiting patiently and she still hadn't appeared. He finally gave up, dressed and brushed his hair. He would shower once he returned from Hogsmeade. He had to buy an appropriate gift for Harry and Remus as a token of appreciation for their part in his wedding. "Hermione, I am leaving. I'll clean up when I return. You have a good time dear and I'll be waiting for you." Severus hated speaking through doors, and it infuriated him. It seemed lately she'd been spending more time on her appearance, apparently she was doubting herself since she'd began to grow into a more pregnant looking woman.
He heard a faint knock on the door, and knew her captors had arrived. "Hello Severus! Where you off to?" Lily was as friendly as ever, and over the past month, James started to realize he wasn't as bad as he once thought.
"I'm off to Hogsmeade. I've got gifts to buy as well as pick up my suit and robes from the tailor's. I believe my love is nearly ready since she has been in there for over an hour. You should not have to wait long."
"Oh good. Mum is expecting us very soon. She's got everything and everyone is ready for Hermione's shower."
"Well, I do hope you don't have to wait long."
Lily took his hand, and offered a few words that confused him. "Severus, you really enjoy yourself in Hogsmeade today, okay?" He gave her a puzzled look, and coldly replied.
"It's freezing out and snow is blowing madly. I doubt I'll have a pleasant time."
"Just trust me, have a good time."
Hermione finished and met them at the door. "Do have fun shopping Sev." She leaned up on her tip toes and kissed him gently good bye.
"You enjoy your little gathering as well. A house full of giggling women and two of them pregnant no less sounds like a wonderful time." He half smiled and Hermione knew he was baiting her. He helped her with her robes, cloak, scarf, mittens and hat. Then he walked with them to the front entrance. Neither Ginny nor Hermione could apparate, and traveling by floo made them both queasy. A ministry car was waiting for them to take them to Godric's Hollow.
Severus shut the door and followed the path into Hogsmeade. He enjoyed the walk so when the horseless carriage offered it's services, he politely declined. After arriving at Westcott's Worldly Wizards Wear, he shrunk his suit and robes box and headed to Timeless Treasures to pick up Harry's cufflinks. It was customary to give the best man and the bride's father a significant gift showing your appreciation for taking part in your wedding. Remus had been asked by Hermione to portray the part her father would have, if he'd accepted her marriage to Severus, or if he'd even accept her for whom she was.
He had chosen to give Remus and enchanted briefcase stamped with Professor Remus J. Lupin on the cover. His old one was nearly destroyed, but he still insisted on carrying it around. Remus had tried repairing it several times with magic, but somethings were better left alone. Hermione had told him he was fond of a pair of pewter candlesticks in their chambers and so he decided to give them to him as well. They were a family heirloom, but Severus didn't mind giving him something so significant.
Harry's gift was a bit harder to decide on, but when he was in Hogsmeade a few days ago getting Hermione's Christmas present, he had decided on a very expensive pair of cufflinks for Harry. They were encrusted with emeralds and were made of solid gold. He had wanted them engraved with HP, and so he had to pick up the special order. The store clerk even engraved a tie clip and threw it in free of charge. The gift cost him nearly one hundred fifty galleons, but he didn't mind. It was well worth it. It really did mean a lot to Severus having Harry beside him. Although he'd never come right out and say it.
Only one shop remained, Professor's Professional Provisions. The sign on the door read they were closed due to the weather, and that if anyone wanted to purchase something, just owl. "Well, that's terrific. I supposed I'll have to wait on that." He wasn't quite ready to return to Hogwarts, and since he was right next to The Three Broomsticks, he went in for a drink. He didn't notice the table in the corner being occupied by three very pissed former classmates, and three former students.
He sat on a stool at the bar and ordered a shot of Firewhiskey and a cup of warm Brandy. It was nearly four in the afternoon, so he didn't feel too bad about drinking. Three shots and a bowl of split pea soup later, he heard the unmistakable bellow of Sirius Black. He turned to see Remus pulling him off of the table as he buttoned his trousers.
"See here Mr. Black, cute as your arse may be, I doubt all my patrons care to see it." Rosmerta was quite used to seeing it however, it had been sometime since they'd been in there drinking. And over twenty years since James Potter had accompanied them. Oliver caught a glimpse of Severus as he secretly tried to appear as just another customer. Obviously, he failed.
"Hullo! Professor Snape!" The boy really didn't need to shout. Severus turned around, nodded and went back to his refilled glass of Brandy. He'd hoped that was all the attention he'd receive, but that hope disappeared as a stumbling Harry made his way over to his side.
"Come have a drink with us Severus. We won't bite. Honestly."
"As tempting as the offer sounds, I think I'll finish my cup and head back to Hogwarts. Hermione will be back before dinner and she'll be expecting me."
"No she won't. She is staying at my house with Ginny and Mum. She'll be back tomorrow before breakfast."
"She never told me of any plans to stay overnight nor did she pack a bag."
"She didn't know. Ginny's got quite an evening planned for her."
"Oh really?" Severus sneered and Harry choked on his mead.
"Not THAT kind of an evening. You know girly stuff. Manicures, pedicures, facials— I'm nearly nauseous just thinking about it."
"I see." Severus was relieved. It was hard telling what they would be doing hadn't they both been pregnant. Remus joined Harry in trying to coerce Severus over to their table, which with a little begging they managed to do.
"Gud fing yu joined us mate." Sirius slurred. "I've out drunked all dees prats." He motioned with his hands to the circle of intoxicated men.
"No you haven't Padfoot. We're all still coherent." James spoke more clearly than anyone so far. "Who just bared their arse for the whole pub to see?"
"Not a bery good point Prongs. I'd du tat sober."
"You've done that sober remember Padfoot?" Added in Remus.
"Let's not bring that up." He took another drink and Harry realized his task was half complete. "Anyway, thanks for joining us. I was having a bit of a problem thinking of how to throw you a stag party, and the solution just found itself."
"You are only required to stand there and give me the ring. Nothing more."
"Nonsense. I plan on fulfilling all the duties. Even the one that says I get you so pissed your bride-to-be threatens to castrate me."
"I don't doubt she'd try."
"Neither do I. So, let's all head over to the Hog's Head and give that old hag really somethin' to bitch about."
Severus was a bit reluctant at first, but he realized he had always wanted to be included in the Marauder's fun. It was like he was fulfilling a dream he'd had since he was eleven years old. He couldn't make friends with them, so he sought out a group of boys that had no problem accepting him. How he regretted that decision now.
"Lead the way Potter." They settled their tabs, but George and Oliver decided to head home instead of joining them. Clearly they both had had enough and needed to sleep it off. "Who would have ever thought those two would end up together?"
"Believe me, I know— I shared a locker room with them both for three years."
"Try sharing a dormitory with your father and Sirius. They were the biggest slobs in the history of Hogwarts. If I didn't clean the dorm, it didn't get done."
"We weren't that bad Harry. Just had things on our minds other than cleaning a room. We got enough of that from home." James gave his son a pat on the back and led them into the Hog's Head. They entered to find it full with former classmates and students on Severus' and Remus' parts. After a very long meet and greet session, they managed to procure a table far in the back away from everyone else. They talked over the events of the past month and what they knew about MacNair and Devon's trials. Harry surprised them all by announcing Draco Malfoy had returned from the States. He had been in hiding since the end of the war, but since the threat of MacNair was over, he was allowed to return.
He had married an American girl and had two boys. Arthur put them up in a safe house until the trial ended and they had been sent to Azkaban. Severus took the opportunity to inform them that he was Draco's Godfather and that he had been worried about him since he'd left. "Narcissa forced Lucius to name me his Godfather. She knew I'd never remain a Death Eater and had hoped if I were able to leave them, then maybe their child would have a chance too."
"You did all you could Severus. He found his way back." Remus patted him gently on the back. Narcissa had been found murdered shortly after the war began. Lucius had been given the Dementor's kiss immediately when they apprehended him. He didn't even seem remorseful.
"Well we're celebrating remember? I never thought I'd be at Severus Snape's stag party. Let alone my son being his best man." He swallowed down his drink and poured another from the pitcher of mead they had ordered.
As the gentlemen got totally pissed, the ladies were enjoying photos of them throughout their Hogwarts years. Lily loved to look at the photos of Harry growing up and was surprised to find the album Hagrid had made for him in his first year. "I love that old coot. James and I loved to go to his hut and talk for hours about anything and everything. He was rather fond of us."
After browsing through a few more pictures, Ginny and Molly left Lily alone with Hermione while they cleaned up the sitting room. All of Hermione's gifts were in there and they wanted to sort them and write a note as to who sent each one. She received a lot by owl and a few even by muggle post. They had been from her cousins in France. Once alone, Lily decided to give her the special gift she'd been keeping.
"Here you go dear. Go on, open it up. It's another present from me."
"Oh Lily, you really have done so much already." She plopped down on the couch next to Hermione and forced her to open it.
"Nonsense. Open it now." Hermione nearly cried at the sight. It was the tiara and veil Lily had worn in her wedding to James.
"I can't accept this Lily. It's beautiful, but I don't have the right to wear it."
"You're half the reason I'm here now so go on now, wear it. Here, try it on." Hermione turned around so Lily could place it on her head. It was exquisite encrusted with diamonds and sapphires. It matched her gown perfectly. "Lily, why are you giving it to me?"
"Well, I want you to have it. I'll never have any more children and Harry is already married to Ginny. It is customary to pass it down, and it has been worn in every generation of the Potter family since Medieval times. Please accept it. Besides, Prisca will nearly fall over dead to see you wearing something so ritualistic. I suppose there's one in the Snape family, but Viscera probably has it." It really was gorgeous and Hermione loved it dearly. Ginny returned and she and Molly had on identical looks of astonishment.
"Wow Hermione. That's very old."
"I know. Lily has given it to me."
"Well, I must say, it's one of the oldest traditions in wizarding weddings. Ginny's wasn't that nice nor that big." Hermione interrupted Molly.
"But she still was beautiful." Ginny smiled tentatively and Hermione did feel a bit out of place accepting something that should have been hers. Ginny sensed her apprehension and told her it was okay to wear it.
"Well, you've got your something old, now, here's the something borrowed." Ginny pulled out the garter she'd worn in hers and Harry's wedding. It was customary for a bride to accept the garter from a successfully married woman. "And I've got your something blue." Molly gave her a pair of sapphire earrings, that had a matching bracelet.
"Thanks Molly. This really means so much to me. You guys are the only family I want and I am so grateful for all you've done for me since I found out I was a witch."
"Well, the something new is your dress, which should be done by tomorrow evening according to Madam Malkin. As well as our robes."
"Now, since Remus is portraying your father, is Sirius going to fulfill the duties of the mother of the bride?" Lily let out a howl, and the other ladies followed suit. It was funny to picture him in womanly dress robes wearing gothic boots, and carrying a purse. They carried on for a bit longer and soon they were all tired and in bed. They placed an engorgement charm on Harry and Ginny's bed so all four of them could fit nicely. They were all in a deep slumber by the time the men made it out of the Hog's Head.
Severus and James had a nice chat while Harry, Sirius and Remus frolicked in the snow. Each transformed and with Remus being a natural animagi due to his lycanthropy, they had a merry time. They managed to get back to Hogwarts nearly minutes before the women arrived. It truly was a sight to behold. A wolf, a fox, a stag, a lion and a dog waiting for the door to open and their significant others to greet them.
