Chapter
14: Evansco and The Truth
Hermione left the
classroom that day wondering how she should feel. Her immediate
reaction had been one of a wounded animal, but she wasn't sure that
Malfoy hadn't just been caught up in the roleplay. He had often
insulted her during foreplay and she'd threatened to hex him on more
than one occasion as she pretended to struggle against him. Until now
she had looked at it as part of the game, part of letting off steam.
Now? Now she wasn't at all sure about any of it.
She spent the rest of the
day in the common room, her head in a book, trying to focus on her
work. She didn't see Harry or Ron until dinner that evening, but she
was relieved when she did, they were the only thing that could get
her mind off Malfoy. They were both in high spirits and were planning
the fun to be had at the Burrow over the holidays.
"We ought to do some
revision as well though." Hermione interjected during a
passionate discussion about playing quidditch. She cracked a smile at
their crestfallen faces, "Only joking!" She was being half
honest, she fully intended to spend several hours every day preparing
for the looming exams, but she knew there was no point trying to
coerce her friends into doing more than they were prepared to do, she
couldn't decide their futures for them.
Hermione didn't see
Malfoy until Monday, he seemed to be avoiding eating in the great
hall, until that morning. He was already at the Slytherin table when
Hermione entered with Harry, Ron and Ginny. She was laughing with the
others at something Ron had said, out of habit she glanced along the
Slytherin table as they passed it and there he was, glaring at her.
She cocked her head at him and tried to look concerned, rather than
angry or embarrassed, she thought she'd got it across, he smiled
quickly and looked down at his food. Throughout breakfast she kept
one eye on him while she picked at a slice of toast. As soon as he
stood to go she did likewise, making an excuse to Harry and Ron and
walked quickly out of the hall after Malfoy.
Harry and Ron watched her
leave, they were used to her sudden departures by now, Harry didn't
think much of it, until he saw Ron's face. It was an expression he
had only seen on very rare occasions, usually when Ginny was being
threatened and his big brother instincts fired.
"Ron, what's up?"
Ron's eyes were fixed firmly on the back of Malfoy's head, until he
disappeared through the huge double doors. He looked angry as hell,
Harry was for the first time in nearly seven years, afraid of Ron.
"Ron?" He asked gently. Ron looked at him slowly, one eye
still on the door, his face softened slightly, but a frown remained.
"It's nothing. I
hope." Harry glanced after Hermione, she was gone and he looked
back at Ron.
"Right." He
said, unconvinced.
Hermione followed Malfoy
towards the corridor down to the dungeons, just before he disappeared
she called out to him, but he ignored her.
"Malfoy." She
called again. He stopped but didn't turn around. She caught up to him
and walked around him to face him. He was scowling down at her and it
took all her courage to speak again, "Draco?" His eyes
snapped to hers and he flinched. "Can I talk to you outside for
a minute?" Silently he nodded and followed her out of the main
doors, onto the steps outside. It was a warm morning, entirely too
cheerful for his liking, there were birds singing and the lake was
glistening under the bright sun.
"What do you want?"
He snapped at her.
"I would have
thought that was obvious." She scoffed, Malfoy rolled his eyes.
"Look, what was that about on Saturday?" He looked away
towards the lake and shifted his weight, clucking his tongue
impatiently. "Draco?"
"Stop calling me
that!" He yelled, fury in his eyes, he towered over her and for
the first time she appreciated his height. "You've never called
me that before. What's got into you?"
"You." She
snapped back. "Is this part of the game or what? What the fuck
is going on here?" Hermione could feel her own temper rising,
her cheeks felt hot and her face set in anger.
"Game?" Malfoy
stepped back and let out a short sharp laugh. "That's what this
has been to you? A game? It's not a fucking game, Granger." She
kept her face steady, but her head was pounding and her stomach
turning.
"No." She
spluttered, unconvincingly. "What has it been for you?" She
immediately wished she hadn't asked, she knew she didn't want to know
the answer.
"I wanted to fuck
with your head, Granger. Mess you up. Worked too, didn't it?" An
evil grin spread across his face, malice written there as clear as
the daylight around them. Hermione stepped away from him, she felt
sick with anger. Her fingers twitched over her wand tucked in her
pocket. "You're disgusting to me. I can't believe I let it go on
as long as I did. But dammit, I was enjoying myself. I never imagined
you'd be such a hot little whore." He spat with venom.
Hermione's eyes flickered, she could feel tears rising but was
determined not to shed them. "Aww. Are you going to cry?"
Malfoy drawled in a mock baby voice.
"Not exactly."
Hermione snapped, pulling out her wand with lightning speed.
"Evansco!" She shouted, pointing her wand at his
groin.
Malfoy flinched, at first
he wasn't sure what was happening, then he felt it. He could feel his
dick shrivelling, it was rapidly shrinking and he let out an almighty
scream. Hermione laughed out loud, she had never heard anything like
it, it was a girly, piercing scream. Malfoy clutched himself and sank
to the floor, trying to hold onto what remained and prevent it from
disappearing entirely. But there was no stopping it, his whole
genitalia shrank into nothingness, until it was gone, as if it had
never been there. "I'd get to the hospital wing if I were you."
Hermione smirked. He stood up and ran inside, charging through the
halls shouting and swearing as people made way for him, looking at
him as if he were deranged.
Hermione was still
giggling when she arrived at Transfiguration. Word had already spread
that someone had hexed Malfoy to the hospital wing, the class was
buzzing, but Ron did not look pleased. Harry grabbed Hermione as soon
as she arrived, pulling her into the seat next to him.
"We saw you follow
Malfoy out of breakfast. Was it you that cursed him?" He asked
excitedly. Hermione wasn't sure how to answer, she knew there would
be more questions, ones she really didn't want to answer. Luckily she
was saved by McGonagall calling things to order.
It wasn't until lunchtime
that Ron cornered her outside the great hall, suspicion all over his
face.
"I heard that
Malfoy's going to be up there for quite a while, but he's not
talking. What happened, Hermione?" There was marked desperation
in his voice and Hermione looked at him with pity.
"I shrank his dick."
Ron's mouth dropped open.
"Shouldn't you have
done that a few months ago?" Hermione looked around, here came
the awkward line of questioning. Ron read her well and he shook his
head, "You slept with him again, didn't you?" She declined
to answer, staring up at the ceiling instead. "For crying out
loud, Hermione! You promised me!" Ron shouted, drawing some
attention from the students nearby. "So, why did you feel the
need to cast such a vicious hex? You obviously like him a lot to do
that with him, again." Hermione snapped,
"Fuck off Ron. It's
none of your damn business what I do. Yes, I broke my promise, but it
was a stupid promise and I shouldn't have made it. And if you must
know, we've been at it like rabbits for the last three months. It
started over Christmas." She watched as Ron's face went through
a series of equally ridiculous expressions.
"What started over
Christmas?" She turned to see Harry standing in the doorway of
the great hall, his arm around a confused looking Ginny.
"She's been fucking
Malfoy." Ron spat. Ginny looked shocked, Harry laughed.
"No she hasn't.
That's so gross." The smile slipped slowly from his face as he
took in their faces. Ron was ready to start throwing hexes around
himself, Hermione was looking at the floor, shifting her feet. He let
go of Ginny and moved quickly to his two best friends, Ginny on his
heels. "Hermione?" He asked quietly, a sternness in his
voice. She looked into his big green eyes, straightened herself and
stamped a firm face on.
"Yes. But it is none
of your business and it's over now anyway." Ginny swallowed hard
and put her hand on Harry's arm as his hand balled into a fist. He
spat on the floor at Hermione's feet and turned, stalking away.
"I can't believe
you." Ron shook his head and set off after Harry. There was
quite a crowd now, Hermione was aware for the first time, and she
took a deep breath. Ginny stood there looking first at her friend,
then at the retreating backs of her brother and boyfriend.
"I'm sorry Hermione.
I don't understand why you would do that. Do you love him?"
"No. Not even
remotely." She answered honestly. Ginny looked so disappointed
in her friend. She followed the boys, her head hanging, leaving
Hermione alone and the centre of attention for the whispering
students around her.
"Move along now."
Just when Hermione thought it couldn't get any worse, Snape appeared
from the grand staircase, the students scattered before him. Hermione
made to leave, but was stopped by his lazy drawl. "Miss Granger.
It has been brought to my attention that you may have been involved
in an incident this morning." She looked up and shrugged.
"I don't know what
you're talking about, Professor." She walked away quickly, not
giving him a chance to question her further. She didn't know what
Malfoy had told Madam Pomfrey, but she planned to deny all knowledge
for as long as possible.
