Chapter 12: A Weasley Wedding
The morning of the
Weasley-Delacour wedding began as most wedding days do, in mayhem. Ginny, Hermione, and Fleur’s
twin cousins swarmed Draco (who was trying to get ready himself) and begged him
to help fix up their hair. Hermione and
Ginny were quickly prepared and appeased, but the Delacour twins were rather
finicky and went through several different attempts before finally being done
up in simple, elegant buns and kicked out of the dorms. Not long after, Draco was whisked away to the
Gryffindor dorms to fix Fleur’s hair.
Remus and Sirius spent the early
hours of the morning of the wedding at the Burrow helping Ron and Harry prepare…well,
mostly trying to tame Harry’s wild hair.
Despite its length it still appeared to be rather wind ravished. The groomsmen were all to be dressed in black
dress robes with silver bowties and cummerbunds to match the bridesmaids’
gowns. Like Draco, they ended up being
rushed to prepare themselves for the ceremony, both wanting to look their best
for different reasons. Harry’s hair was
victorious again and remained sticking out in all directions.
Eris was awakened very early in
the morning by Nox, who led her away from the dorms
and to a darkened corner of the castle where he proceeded to transform and
argue with her about the merits of him coming along to the wedding. Both Fleur and Mrs. Weasley had expressed
worries about having a ferret at the wedding.
In the end, Eris and Severus agreed that he could come along in the pet
carrier…as long as “Nox” was wearing a little silver
bowtie. The things mentors do for their
charges.
When the time
was near for the bridal party to walk out of their little tent enclosure in the
Weasley backyard, everyone looked beautiful in their satin, braids, bowties,
and curls. The yard was
resplendent with rosebushes lining the seating area and a massive canopy of
silver-blue clematis vines with fairy lights spread about intermittently. All the guests were finely dressed. It was a wedding setting out of a dream with
Fleur as the beautiful princess in a gown of white satin in the same style as
the bridesmaid dresses, but with the angel sleeves trailing off behind her
along with a four foot train. Her
silver-blonde hair was done in ringlets with half piled up and woven in place
with white satin ribbon. Eris, Hermione,
Ginny, Angelique and Dominique appeared as her fair ladies in waiting. The sun was shining, the sky was clear, and
there was only a gentle breeze in the air.
Every detail was perfect. It
seemed as though nothing could go wrong.
______________________________________________________________________
Harry loved the look of
unrestrained enjoyment on Eris’ face as they waited for their cue to walk out
down the aisle. Ginny and Charlie were
to go out first, Angelique and George would go second, Dominique and Fred
third, and Hermione and Ron fourth. He
and Eris were to be the final pair to walk out before Gabrielle stepped out to
lay down a path of white rose petals for Fleur.
He thought that he had never seen
Eris look more beautiful, not that he had had many opportunities to see his
sister done up in such fancy togs and primed so well. He thought of the first time he saw Eris, in
her dark green robes and her hair swept back.
She had looked so like their mother and that made her seem too beautiful
to him then. Now, well now Harry still
saw their mother in Eris’ face but he was able to appreciate Eris’ own beauty,
which had only been heightened by her elven inheritance. As he looked at her elegantly coifed hair, he
wished for about the seventieth time that day that Remus and Sirius would have
managed to tame his perpetually wind ravaged locks.
His hair had been tamed a bit by
the added length, but he still had a wind-whipped look that he felt was a bit
too…er…well, feminine. Of course, covering his ears with his newly
lengthened hair had made him feel less self-conscious. Eris’ ears were a good deal longer than his
and he swore that they had extended since her transformation. They were a tad over half a foot long and she
had decorated them with a traditional elvish piercing
for the wedding. She had a simple
diamond stud with a silver teardrop hanging down. A thread-fine, silver chain was attached at the
stud and then draped down a bit only to come up and attach to another diamond
stud. It continued on like this all the
way to the tip of her ear where then three of the fine chains hung down from
the final stud and had several silver teardrops, smaller than the first, placed
sporadically along the chain.
He noticed that Eris was looking
at him then, really looking at him
and frowning. “Harry, I thought Sirius
and Remus were going to fix your hair.”
Harry felt himself blushing. “Well…er…they tried
to. It’s not sticking up on the top
anymore.”
Draco snorted. “Harry, you look like a bottle of hair gel
exploded above you.”
Harry watched as Draco and Eris
shared a significant look and then advanced towards him. “Whoa, hey, you two, what are you doing?”
Eris smiled. “Just relax, brother. Draco and I have a plan.”
Harry grimaced, just knowing that
whatever they were planning was going to make him look even more girly. It would have to involve more ribbons and
bobby pins than Eris was sporting if it was actually going to tame his wild
mop. “Just be gentle with me.”
Draco laughed and waved his wand
and suddenly Harry felt the weight of all the hair gel Sirius had dumped on him
lift away. Eris flicked her wrist next
wrist next and Harry felt as though someone was brushing his hair. A few short minutes and several flicks from
Draco’s wand later, Harry was bracing himself to look in a mirror that Hermione
had summoned.
“Really, Harry,” Hermione said in a soothing
tone. “You look stunning, positively
rakish really. Just look in the mirror.”
Harry sighed and opened his
eyes. At first, he frowned because for a
moment it appeared that they had cut his hair and slicked it back. Then, he began to twist a bit and realized
that they had pulled his hair back in a simple braid…and it didn’t look girlish
at all. “Thanks!”
He beamed at Eris, who cocked her
head to the side and studied him.
“Something is still missing.” She
waved her wand and conjured what looked like to wickedly sharp, silver
arrowheads linked together by a silver chain.
Each of the arrowheads had a dark garnet set in the center of the blade
so that it was visible from either side.
“Ohhh, Eris,”
Hermione exclaimed with eyes wide. “Are
you sure that it’s safe? What if he
turns too quickly?”
Eris chuckled. “Don’t worry, they only look sharp. They’re actually quite blunt and the silver
is spelled to be very soft. It would
bend and buckle if it came into rough contact with anything, even skin.”
Harry frowned. “I don’t understand…what is it?”
Hermione rolled her eyes. “Honestly, Harry, haven’t you read any of
those books that Eris has on elven tradition.
This is a small piece of weaponry.
The elvish women, and some men, would do their
hair up in loads of braids before battle and tie a set of these at the end of
each one. It was like having a head full
of bladed whips.”
“Do you think that’s appropriate,” Charlie
asked with a frown.
Eris smiled. “Decorative pieces like these are traditional
wedding ornamentation, usually for a groom.
It’s meant to show that he is a flexible warrior, dangerous with more
than just his magic or even his hands.”
Harry looked at his sister carefully. “You know how to fight like this?”
Eris laughed. “Well, I’ve studied it, but I’ve never been a
physical person. I quite wholly rely on
my magic. Of course, if I was going to
use an alternate weapon this would be it.”
“Why aren’t you wearing any,” Ginny asked.
Eris shrugged.
“The way Draco did my hair didn’t really work with them.”
With
that, Harry turned and allowed Eris to attach the tiny weapon to his
braid. A few moments later, the wedding
coordinator burst into the tent and quickly lined them all up. Before Harry really had time to think about
it, he and Eris were walking down the aisle.
____________________________________________________________________
Draco sighed as he watched
everyone twirling about the conjured dance floor. The ceremony had gone off without a hitch, as
had the dinner. Now everyone was
relaxing and cutting loose, sipping on cocktails or dancing happily. He’d had a horrible feeling that something
was going to go wrong. It had hit him
that morning, but he’d tried to shrug it off as simply feeling too rushed and
not having enough time to really speak with Eris, or
Severus for that matter.
He looked down at the ferret in
his lap that was sporting a small, silver bowtie. “I’d really like to know how she talked you
into that.”
Nox gave him a
particularly venomous look and darted off his lap towards Eris who was
currently dancing with Charlie Weasley.
Well, actually she’d only been dancing with Charlie. Harry had danced with her for the opening
number and Weasley had been with her ever since. He wasn’t going to complain though. Several of Fleur’s
single, male cousins were eyeing Eris in a way that made Draco want to hex
them. He’d seen Harry giving a few of
them looks that could have set their hair on fire if they’d noticed. There was no denying it, however; Eris was
the most beautiful creature on the floor, and that was saying something
considering that nearly all of Fleur’s relatives had
various potions of Veela blood running in their
veins. She was pulling the male
population of the wedding to her without the use of a Veela’s
thrall. Of course, he was biased, not that
he would ever admit it aloud.
That was
when he spotted Harry and Sirius conversing quietly off to the side of the
dance floor. Sirius was nodding to
whatever Harry was saying, but his eyes were following Eris’ every move. Draco searched out Ginny then and saw her
sipping on some punch off to his left. A
plan was now fully formed in his head.
He only needed to know one thing to make sure that it was successful.
He stood and made his way over to
Ginny, who offered him a cheery smile, which he returned. “Tell me, Ginny, how adverse would dear old
Charlie be to having a male dance partner for a few minutes?”
Ginny looked rather startled for a
moment and then a devious smile began to pull at her lips. Draco knew there was a good reason for him to
like this particular Weasley.
______________________________________________________________________
Eris kept a smile on her face as
she danced to yet another song with Charlie.
She’d had the smile in place the whole day despite how uncomfortable
she’d been. All through the wedding
she’d felt Sirius’ gaze boring into her, though she hadn’t had the courage to
look out at him. He was still watching
her and she really had to wonder at how long Charlie’s presence would fend him
off. Not that she thought it mattered to
anyone else. She was fairly certain that
Charlie had been told to stick to her like glue, but whether it was by Harry or
Mrs. Weasley she was uncertain.
At this point she was starting to
get a bit bored. Charlie was a perfect gentleman
and quite capable of intimidating all the other prospects who seemed eager to
claim her for a dance, but he seemed fairly uncomfortable. He’d barely spoken at first, at least until
she’d gotten him to start talking about his dragons. That conversation had been quite nice, but
there was only so much about dragons that Charlie could tell. Now they seemed to have nothing to talk
about.
Eris sighed. She was going to have to give him an out and
risk the few other young bucks who were drooling on the sidelines before either
she or Charlie died of boredom. “Charlie,
it’s awfully nice of you to keep me company like this, but I could go sit with
Draco for a while.”
Charlie looked startled for a
moment. “Er…well…I’m
quite happy here, thanks.”
“Charlie, you’re obviously not having as much
fun as you should. You ought to go snag
Fleur for a dance before she and Bill run off for the night.” Eris offered Charlie a cheeky grin and he
chuckled.
“Eris, are you trying to get rid of me?”
“Oh, fess up already,” Eris said with a roll
of her eyes. “Come on, Charlie, who told
you to play guard dog?”
Charlie blushed a bit. “Eris, it’s not as though I couldn’t have
wanted to be in your company all on my own.”
“Thank you, but I know someone asked you to
stay with me,” Eris said softly. “I
doubt that being stuck with a seventeen-year-old schoolgirl for this entire
ordeal is your idea of a good time.”
Eris smiled again, but Charlie gave her a strange look.
He cleared his throat. “Eris, you do realize that you look nothing
like a schoolgirl, don’t you? That’s
part of why I’m staying with you. None
of Fleur’s relatives know that you’re not even out of
school yet! They probably think you’re
marriage material.”
Eris sighed. “Charlie, even so, the ears make it pretty
obvious that part magical creature. All
types of elves are know for being mated creatures
and…”
“And they’ll suspect that at least one of them
will be a potential,” Charlie cut in leaving Eris speechless. She hadn’t thought of that. “I’ll be honest, Eris, no less than three
people literally ordered me to stay with you, but I would have done it all on
my own. I feel as though I owe you that
much.”
Eris gave the wizard a quizzical
look. “What on Earth for?”
“For being against you, for not being on your
side right away with the rest of my family.” Charlie sighed and pulled her close for a
moment. Eris tensed a bit but recognized
that Charlie was simply trying to give her a hug to ease his own sense
of…something. Wrongdoing? “If whatever you showed Mad-Eye was enough to
shut him up that quickly…well let’s just say that it made me feel quite the
fool. My whole family looks upon Harry
as one of our own. That sort of makes
you my second little sister. I deeply
regret that I couldn’t put as much faith in you as Ginny did from the start.”
Eris really didn’t know what to
say at first. She simply allowed Charlie
to continue twirling her about the floor as she collected her thoughts. “You’d barely met me when that was all thrown
at you. I would never blame you for
being cautious.”
Charlie smiled warmly at her and
opened his mouth to say something, but was cut off by the sudden appearance of
Draco and Ginny. Both were grinning
madly, making Eris wonder if Fred and George had already spiked the punch. Draco spoke first after bowing to Charlie
ever so slightly. “Charlie, I wonder if
I could cut in?”
Eris looked at Draco
intently. Something was off. Charlie frowned. “I’m not really supposed to leave Eris.”
Draco chuckled and Eris was now
very scared. “Nonsense! Ginny will take good care of her for this one
song.”
Eris froze and her momentary loss
of brain function gave Draco just enough time to whisk Charlie (who seemed
equally perplexed) away. Ginny was still
grinning madly and Eris felt her grab her arm, steering her towards the seating
area. “Let’s go find Harry, shall we,
Eris?”
Now Eris really panicked. That sneaky, Slytherin bastard was trying to
get her to dance with Sirius again! The
worst part was that if she pulled away from Ginny she would have to face the
half dozen blond, French, part Veela trying to turn
their charm up on her. Therefore, the
question was, who did she feel more capable of handling. Veela. Definitely the Veela since their thrall wouldn’t affect her with Sirius so
close by.
Just as
she caught sight of Harry and Sirius (who were already staring at her and
Ginny), Eris jerked her arm away from Ginny with a small smile. “I’m just going to go grab a drink.”
Ginny frowned. “Charlie will be furious if he sees you
alone. Just come sit with Harry and I.”
Eris sighed and shook her
head. Ginny couldn’t understand how
uncomfortable that position would be.
The redhead wasn’t even thinking about Sirius. “No. I
can’t”
Ginny growled. The girl growled! “Sirius isn’t going to bite you if you dance
with him. We’ve all realized that he’s
probably one of your potentials just by the way you avoid him.”
“You just don’t understand,” Eris said softly
and turned away only to feel a much stronger and larger hand than Ginny’s gently
take her arm. She turned and found
herself face-to-face with Sirius. He’d
obviously decided that waiting for her to come to him was futile. Smart man.
_______________________________________________________________________
Sirius stared into Eris’ eyes for
a moment and waited for her to bolt.
Instead, he was able to sigh in relief when she simply gave him a
resigned nod. Well, at least he was
getting to dance with her. He led her
out onto the floor and held her at a discreet distance as a slow and smooth
waltz began to play. “You look exquisite
tonight, Eris.”
Her green
eyes rose to his face for a short moment and she offered him a very small
smile. “You look very nice as well.”
Sirius smiled a bit as Eris’ eyes
proceeded to drift in all directions, but refused to meet his own again. He decided that being serious with her would
get him nowhere. “Yes, well I suppose I
do look all right for a bloke who was dead for a year.”
Eris’ lips twitched. “Perhaps the rest did you some good.”
“Perhaps.” Sirius allowed himself
to drift a bit closer to his dance partner and leaned close to one of her
delicately pointed ears. “You, sweet
elf, have been avoiding me.”
He watched as she swallowed hard,
intrigued by the play of skin over muscle.
Just as he thought he wouldn’t be able to stop himself from kissing her
throat she pulled back a bit, finally looking him in the eye again. “I’ve been avoiding most everyone, actually.”
“We only want to help you,” Sirius said
softly, drinking in the sight of her upturned face and grateful, not for the
first time, for his height. “I know it
must have been difficult while all the arguing was going on, but we know that
you’re with us now.”
Eris frowned and he saw her eyes
harden a bit. “Perhaps I think you were
all foolish for giving me a second chance.
Have you ever considered that?”
Sirius’ eyes narrowed. What was she on about now? “Planning on running back to them then? Harry said that Voldemort was willing to give
you a second chance. Something about
telling you that you could always turn to him once we’d all cast you out.”
The girl
sighed and tentatively met his gaze once more.
“I’m trying to say that people can be controlled by their fears,
Sirius. Fear can be stronger in the
hands of your enemies than the Imperious Curse.
I would have felt that the rest of you were safer if you had locked me
away.”
“Nonsense,” Sirius said curtly. “You’re stronger than that. Besides, Lucius Malfoy is a right bastard,
but I reckon that you could blast him off his high horse with little effort.”
Eris stiffened and jerked away
from him. There was something in her
eyes then, something wild and frightened.
Something ashamed. “Thank you for
the dance, Sirius.”
She
walked swiftly away leaving Sirius staring after her. He was now more determined than ever to find
out what the hell Tonks and Moody had seen in the pensieve.
_____________________________________________________________________
Eris drifted up to the punch bowl
and reached out towards the ladle. A
cold hand grasped hers as she was about to fill her cup. She looked up to see a tall wizard who
appeared to be a few years older than her, with dark brown eyes and
silvery-blond hair that matched Fleur’s. She assumed that he was a member of the
bride’s family. “Bonsoir,
mademoiselle. Me
permettre.”[1]
Eris blinked and let the handsome
wizard take the ladle from her. She
offered him a shy smile as he handed her a glass of punch. “Thank you.”
He smiled. “De rien.”
[2]
Eris managed to keep a frown from
her face. The mysterious Delacour cousin
seemed to understand English, but he wasn’t speaking it. Perhaps he was just trying to be romantic. Silly man.
She had been taught French when she was younger, but it had been some
time since she’d put anything but the basics to use.
She
sipped on her punch and the blond wizard began to chatter to her in
French. She would catch a word here and
there and kept smiling the whole time.
If he knew that she didn’t understand him he didn’t seem to care. “Vous
avez l’air d’en ange ce
soir.” [3]
He’d spoken very slowly this time
and Eris managed to work her way through enough of the words to discern that
he’d said she looked like an angel. She
blushed a bit. “You’re too kind.”
He waved away her comment and held
out a hand to her. “Peux-j’avoir une danse?”[4]
All she caught was the word
‘dance’, but the request was obvious.
She glanced about for a moment and saw that Charlie was now dancing with
Ginny and Draco with Harry. In her
moment of shock at seeing Harry unwind enough to dance with Draco, her mystery
beau grabbed her arm and swept her onto the floor. The Frenchman kept up a steady flow of speech
as they danced and Eris decided to simply let the beautiful language flow over
her. Wonderful thing, the French
language. It made even the coarsest
comments sound like refined compliments.
“Je ne suis pas trompé
par votre deguisement.[5] Je sais que
vous u’êtes pas comme l’innocent comme vous aimeriez
qu’ait pensé.[6]”
The
wizard smiled brightly through all of his chattering, but Eris began to feel
more and more uncomfortable. She looked
up into his eyes, which seemed quite cold despite their warm, brown color. “I didn’t catch your name, by the way.”
If
anything the man’s smile grew. His
chattering was quite rapid and the words rolled from his mouth smoothly, but
too quickly for Eris to really keep up.
She listened harder. “Bientôt je vous
aurai dans une cage et je pourrai continuer vos leçons.[7] Peut-être
vous apprendrez même à plaire
quoi que le compagnon est choisi pour vous.[8]
A chill
slipped into the man’s tone and Eris shivered.
She searched for Harry again and realized that she had been maneuvered
to a deserted edge of the dance area where no one was sitting or standing. They stopped dancing then and the man leaned
down and hissed in her ear very slowly, “Je sais que
vous êtes traitre. Je sais
que vous êtes sali.[9]
Eris understood one word for
certain. Traitor. She looked again into the man’s eyes and let
her wand slip into her hand. Wordlessly
she cast Legilimens
and gasped at what she saw. Her voice
wavered and he continued to pull her away from the partygoers. “No…how could you get in…”
“Tsk tsk, Eris.
You know very well the difference a little Polyjuice
makes.” A Death Eater, he was a Death
Eater. She got that much before he
occluded his mind. She probably could
have broken in deeper, but she was too flustered at this point. She was terrified that she knew who he was.
“Let me go!”
“Now, now, little angel, I have such plans for
you.” That was when his skin rippled a
bit and Eris realized why he was so anxious to get her away. Within moments, the Polyjuice
had worn off and her dance partner’s identity was revealed. It was Lucius Malfoy.
Her
insides froze and she managed only to jerk her hand away and back up two
steps. He smirked at her. “Now, Eris, its time to come along. Our lord is rather upset that you have yet to
return. We wouldn’t want things to get
messy.”
Eris glared at the man. “You can’t use that on me anymore. I won’t let you trick me again.”
Lucius snarled. “Foolish girl. Do you really think I would come here
alone? He wants you back quite badly, my
dear. You would do well not to
underestimate what he will try to regain you.
Now come!”
Lucius reached out for her again
and as his skin connected with hers a wave of terror rushed over her. It felt as though it started somewhere in her
stomach, flaring out through all her limbs, and then contracting back again
only to push upwards. It flew up and out
and exited her mouth in the form of an ear-piercing scream. He was not going to take her so easily this
time.
_______________________________________________________________________
Harry was just beginning to get
used to dancing with Draco when a scream split through the air leaving a heavy
silence behind it. Harry suddenly felt
pure terror whip through him as Eris opened herself to him. He bolted in the direction that he sensed
Eris’ presence, Draco, Charlie, and the rest of the nearby Order members hot on
his heels. He stopped dead in his tracks
about twenty feet from Eris when he realized what had frightened her. Lucius Malfoy. When the elder Malfoy realized that his time
had run out, Harry saw him make a very subtle signal with his wand and moments
later Death Eaters were swarming into the area.
Most of the Order members present set to work getting the regular guests
to safety. Harry, Draco, Sirius, Remus,
Charlie, and Tonks stood facing off with Malfoy who was now holding Eris in
front of him as a shield.
Tonks was the first to make a
move. “Get your hands off of her this
instant.”
The auror moved swiftly ahead, with an agility that surprised
Harry, but was quickly brought down by a stunner from a Death Eater off to the
side who sprang out from behind the rose bushes. Remus growled, but didn’t move.
Harry’s mind was racing, trying to
conceive of some way he could attack Malfoy without Eris being at risk. Draco was trying to buy some time by
talking. “Just let her go, father. She’s not one of you any more.”
Lucius simply loosed a cruel
laugh. “Oh I beg to differ, Draco. Little Eris will always be one of us. She really doesn’t have any choice.”
“Quite right, Lucius,” drawled a new voice
that Harry knew far too well even though it now lacked the serpentine
hiss. Voldemort stepped from the shadows
and up next to Lucius and Eris. “Eris,
I’d hoped you would return much sooner than this. I had hoped that Severus would have cured you
of this rebelliousness. No matter, it
will soon be rectified.”
Harry watched in fury as the
bastard ran one, long finger along Eris’ cheek and then her throat. When Voldemort then leaned in and pulled Eris
into a deep kiss, Harry couldn’t help but flinch away. When he did, he spotted Nox
slowly weaving his way towards where Eris was being held captive.
_______________________________________________________________________
Severus was weaving himself around
fallen chairs, slinking ever closer as he tried to decide how to proceed. Should he try to snatch Eris away? Should he simply tag along to wherever they
were taking her? What would be the
consequences of revealing himself at this point…to either side? He could feel Eris’ fear and Harry’s anger
and it pushed against his mind trying to force a decision.
It was when he was close enough to
see Eris’ tears, to she the way she trembled as Lucius and that snake bastard
touched her that he made his decision.
He just needed to get her out of the line of fire, his position as a spy
be damned. He
poised himself and prepared to leap and transform, only to see that Lucius was
about to activate a portkey.
He leaped out towards Eris, but by
the time he had transformed the trio had been whisked away followed by dozens
of rapid popping sounds as the other Death Eaters disapparated
away, leaving him lying on the ground with several angry wizards aiming their
wands at him. He looked up wearily from
the ground and saw Potter staring at him in disbelief. “Snape?”
Severus glanced at Draco who was
too busy staring in horror at the spot where Eris had just stood. Severus sighed. “Shit.”
