The moon had vanished from the sky leaving only dull stars and empty darkness. Two figures stood side by side, illuminated by a sickly blue glow from a magical fire in the hearth. Ruins of a once splendid mansion loomed around them, jagged peaks stabbing the dark skyline, treacherous pit falls gaping wide around them. The scent of blood was thick in the cool air.
“Once you have gained what I need you may have the boy.” The first one spoke, face hidden in shadows. His voice was alien and yet familiar all at once.
A sharp intake of breath from the stockier figure made him draw closer to hear the anxious voice. “Are you certain Master? I- I may not be able to control myself. With the inhibitor in place I may d-destroy him… every strip of flesh flayed… every sweet breath swallowed until his ribs are crushed to a bloody pulp beneath me…”
He flinched away from the nauseating creature. Walden Macnair’s tone did not seem to be of one who was embarrassed by such actions; his voice trembled as if the thought alone of such violence was pleasurable. Given his previous visions, he knew it was more than true. Many nights had been spent with Tom having Macnair assist him in torture. He whirled back when the other figure gave a terrible, familiar laugh.
“I insist. He must suffer for his betrayal. You’ve not had the opportunity to slaughter a dragon; it will make a nice addition to your collection of trophies. I’ve found Muggle appendages are so passé these days.” The figure straightened, illuminated for a frozen moment in horrible clarity. “I must have the key first. If you fail me, your punishment will be far more severe than what you inflict on others, Macnair.”
Macnair nodded furiously, falling to his knees in fear or gratitude; it was always difficult to tell when they were facing down Voldemort. They all kissed his robe the same way.
“Enough. Prepare yourself; you will strike tonight. Do not fail.” The red eyes were the same, but nothing more. Somehow Voldemort had regained his boyhood form, older, but no longer disfigured. The way the attractive features twisted, the fearful light behind his eyes, it was more disturbing than the leather like mask he had donned previously.
The light picked up something, a marking… tattoo? He felt himself being pulled away. Struggling, he stared intently at the strange black stain until he was torn back into reality.

Harry shot awake, grasping for his glasses and the dark book before the vision could fade. He found the symbol under the Behemoth of the Last Silence. Skimming the pages, he found the symbol again on the Leviathan of the Last Darkness and on the Frost Wraith of the Last Day. All of them were horribly powerful, intelligent beings that the Soul of the Ancient Night had destroyed in awesome battles since the earth had stabilized. Did that mean Tom Riddle was its latest incarnation? Would the Dark Lord Voldemort be the next name on that list to go into the dark book?
“Is everything alright, New Born?”
“Harry.” He replied automatically, not even surprised by her sudden appearance. Yehl wouldn’t be able to offer much help since she had never seen Voldemort. It could all just be a result of too much reading and his over creative imagination in play. Sirius death was still fresh in his mind; did he really want to trust another vision this soon? Decided, he turned to find Yehl waiting intently by the window. “The moon, what phase is it in right now?”
“It is waning in its fourth phase.”
“You wouldn’t know when it will be gone, a new moon, would you?”
“Soon. It should fall on the night before your anniversary of birth.”
Harry hunched over, staring blankly at his toes as he chose the best words that wouldn’t make him sound completely raving. “… I don’t know what it means but I think you should know that something will— may, happen that night.”
Yehl remained silent, staring out into the night. “You have foreseen this.”
Surprised by her tone of certainty, Harry looked up. “Well, I think… it could be a trick. See this scar?” He lifted his bangs and let Yehl examine the bolt. “When I was a baby, this guy tried to kill me and left me with this. It connects us in a way— it’s hard to explain. The thing is, he sent me a false vision that ended up putting a lot of people at risk and my Godfather died from it…” Pinned by Yehl’s gaze he trailed off.
“Visions will come naturally to you. The Crowne of Tyrain is designed to help you focus your visions and prevent outside intrusion. I do not know how it will affect this one that has leeched onto your mind. Your brother may know.” She eyed the pouch of jewelry with respect. “Was there something you needed to know of them? You have chosen not the wear any but the Hearken Ring.”
He refused to let himself feel ashamed; he hadn’t asked Yehl to protect him, he didn’t even really know her. “No, I haven’t decided if I trust any of this yet.”
Yehl nodded, apparently satisfied with the answer. “I imagine it must be difficult. For your safety I hope you decide before the rebirth begins.”
The warning sparked a question he had been wondering. “Yehl, will you be there?”
“Of course. I will be your guard while you are in the weakened state.”
“And after? How long will you stay?” Harry asked the space around her ankles.
Frowning, Yehl began to pace. “Officially, as long as I am needed. That decision is yours alone to make… I refuse to leave before the rebirthing; you will have to deal with me until then.”
“Unofficially?” He asked softly.
She froze, a soft emotion flickering across her face. “When I am replaced and dismissed I will continue to protect you from afar. The Allegiance will expel me for my defiance and if the urge hits you, you will finally kill me, if I haven’t already fallen during my duties. When I am reborn as a mortal and if my memory is intact I will ultimately seek you out again and help as much as my new form will allow. I will not abandon the Heir.”
Stunned, Harry blinked a couple of times, his jaw agape. “You’ve really thought about this.”
“Character is very important to my kind. The instant you offered me and the other birds meat, as if we were worthy of respect equal to an honored guest, I decided.” She explained simply.
“Oh…” Harry furrowed his brow. “Hope I don’t let you down then.”
“I’m certain you won’t.” Yehl smiled back. “Perhaps you should return to sleep?”
He nodded and returned everything to his nightstand and settled back in bed. “Yehl?”
“Yes, New Born.”
“You can’t call me that in front of others.” He sighed distractedly.
“I know, not that the humans understand me. What did you want?”
“This Soul Form…What if I become something monstrous? What if I’m frightening— and wrong?”
Yehl regarded him silently. “Do you think you will become such a thing?”
“I— well, no.” He bit his lip. “I know the way others think and a part of me wonders if they aren’t right.” It took so long for Yehl to reply he wasn’t sure she was still there. She had the annoying ability to fade out.
“As an elite warrior, I have had to do many controversial things.” Yehl finally spoke. “True, many did not agree with my methods. I’ve been, at times, monstrous in their eyes. But I know who I am.” She stressed, eyes burning into his. “Even when I was unsure, deep in the heat of battle, as long as I remain confident of who I am I could face it all with a strong heart. It is difficult when one thinks they are alone, even worse when you are misunderstood and labeled. You must have faith in yourself. Find the people that know you and hold onto them dearly, for they will restore you when you falter.” She smiled softly. “Someday I hope to have that honor.”
Harry blushed, a warm, happy feeling settling over him. Smiling softly he said good night. “Thanks Yehl.”
She smiled and an instant later was gone.
