“You just have to walk straight at the wall,” Draco said to the young man with the mop of unruly chestnut curls, motioning towards it with his hand. Kuri looked at him like he thought his father was joking with him.
Hermione stood back and watched with glee the confusion and fear on her sons face as he watched some older Hogwarts students disappeared behind the seemingly solid barrier that led to Platform 9 ¾. Draco stood up and looked at her, shaking his head with a look of distress.
“Want to lend a hand, dear?” he asked. She nodded and handed Fiona, their five year old daughter to him. The tiny blonde snuggled against her father’s neck and he placed a kiss on the top of her head.
“Kuri, would mummy and daddy ever tell you to do something that would hurt you?” she asked kneeling next to him and looking into his sky blue eyes.
The eleven year old boy shook his head then looked back at the barrier, a look of determination on his small face. Draco laughed to himself, it was the same look that his mother had when she was setting her mind to something. Hermione stood at her husband’s side and watched as their child approached the barrier cautiously. Kuri turned back to look at them both, and they smiled encouragingly. He nodded and edged his way through until he was no longer in sight.
Hermione and Draco allowed themselves a second of laughter.
“Were we ever that green?” she asked him. He nodded earnestly and gestured with his free hand for her to move through onto the platform. She flashed the smile that still melted his heart after all these years and then she stepped through the wall.
“Come on, daddy,” the young lady in his arms said bouncing a little in excitement. He gave her a little squeeze then he walked through the barrier. Hermione was a little way up helping Kuri with his trunk. He stopped and just watched them both for a second. His boy was off to Hogwarts and he thought back to his own days there, particularly the night that had changed his life. The night that had led him to her and all the happiness she bought to his life now. He wondered what would have happened to him if he had been less ruthless as a teen. If he hadn’t attempted to take what he didn’t deserve, would they still be standing here today? It messed with his head, and he shook the thought away. Fiona struggled out of his grasp and he placed her down. She ran off down the platform to give her big brother a hug good-bye.
Too soon for either parent, the train was set to leave. Kuri stood at the window of his compartment waving good-bye to them and Hermione couldn’t help the tears that filled her eyes. They’d never been apart for more than a night in the last 11 years and she felt a little bit like she was losing him.
Draco noticed how much his wife was affected, and draped his arm around her shoulder and gave her a little comforting squeeze.
“I know, I’m being pathetic,” she sniffed, leaning into him.
“We’ve still got Fiona, for a few more years” he said watching his daughter running along after the train until she reached the end of the platform.
Hermione smiled to herself and wondered if now was a good time to tell him the news the medical staff at St Mungos had sent her just yesterday. She rubbed her hand over her abdomen, where a new life was growing.
When we get home, she thought as she reached out her hand for her daughter.
The girl grabbed it and twisted around to grab her fathers hand too. All three Malfoy’s turned and headed back towards King’s Cross.
Author’s Note : A few people have mentioned that they thought the story ended a bit too quickly, or that they wanted more so here is a just a little bit extra, especially for them. I hope you enjoyed it. ~Mel
