Chapter 14 A Pensive, Number twelve, and giggles.
“It is not my place to tell you details Miss Granger. Suffice it to say that I think you have heard enough to gather what kind of upbringing she has had.”
Hermione nodded. “How could someone ….you know. To do that is just so….”
“Unfortunately Miss Granger, there are many such Someone’s in the world, most are never known of. The victims usually are too afraid to tell anyone what is happening to them, some think that it is a normal part of life.”
“But why? If they tell someone then it can be stopped. Why didn‘t she tell someone?”
“No Miss Granger, they cannot”
He ran his hand through his hair. ‘How the Hell did he explain this to her.’ “The victim is made to feel that they are at fault, brainwashed if you like. The abuse is not just physical, it is just as much mental and emotional abuse. Playing on the mind of the victim is all part of the sadistic pleasure that these fiends take from their charges. The ones they are meant to love and care for.”
Hermione did not know what to say. Her mind, for once, simply could not comprehend the horrors that a person, any person would, could do this to another.
“I trust Miss Granger, that everything that has taken place and been said in these rooms today, remains in these rooms. For now at least.”
“Definitely Sir, I am not a gossip.”
“I know Miss Granger, but I had to ask you. For Nina’s sake.”
For a while they both sat quietly, each caught up in their own thoughts.
“Sir?”
“Hmm?”
“Is it all right if I go now? I‘ll stay if you need me to but….”
“No Miss Granger, you may go. I am in you debt Miss Granger. Thank you.”
Hermione headed for the door.
“Oh and Miss Granger.”
She turned back to him.
“Two hundred points….to Griffindor.”
They were alone now, just him and Nina. What had he done? How had he brought her to this? He knew he was the cause of bringing all of her fear and emotions to a head, making her crack like an egg shell. Why did he have to take his own insecurities out on her? When he had seen her kissing Malfoy, his insane jealousy took over. And why should she not kiss a boy, someone closer to her own age.
He was a fool to think that she had feelings for him, he was twenty years her senior and not exactly gifted in the looks department. And Nina, she was young, beautiful, open, honest. He was none of these things. Once again, he reached his hand out to her and placed it gently on the top of her head.
He saw into her mind as she exited the Great Hall with everyone after breakfast. She stood watching as they all went to their classes or common rooms. They all had somewhere to go. And then she was alone. He could feel the loneliness in her. Not wanting to return to her rooms, afraid to leave the castle for fear of reprisals. He saw her mount the stairs and leap off when they began to move, looked on as Malfoy arrived and listened to them talk. Followed then around the castle as they explored and laughed, then eventually came back to where they had started. Nothing untoward happened, Malfoy seemed to genuinely enjoy her company. Severus never even realised that Malfoy Jr. could act like the child he really was. Then he saw the kiss, the totally innocent kiss that was meant to land on Malfoy’s cheek until he turned at the last second. Then he, Severus had appeared. He saw her after he marched off to the staff room, felt her confusion and hurt as she tried to figure out what she had done wrong. He could feel the tears that stung her eyes, the trembling in her body as she went over what he had said to her. Then connecting it to her Uncle. He saw himself return to her and watched as he, Severus, became, in her eyes, Uncle Pete, felt her absolute terror as she backed away from Severus/Uncle Pete. He pulled his hand away. Once again the tears were streaming down his cheeks. This time with shame for what he had done to her. To his Nina. Only she wasn’t his Nina any more. She was terrified of him. He heard the bell that signalled the end of the school day. He had missed his Friday afternoon classes. He did not care. He walked over to the floo and asked Albus to come down.
When Albus arrived, they sat in Nina’s living room and Severus put everything into a Pensive for him to view, Including what he had seen, heard and felt when he had reached into her mind just a few moments before. He told him of his feelings for Nina and hers for him, both before and after the events of today.
“Albus, I have screwed up big time. Her mind is in a much worse state then it ever was when she was with them. I have sent her over the edge and I do not know if she will come back.”
“We shall have to wait and see Severus, but do not give up hope. If she loves you, truly loves you as you love her, then there is always hope.!
She said ‘Loved’ Albus, past tense. She told me she ‘loved’ me and ‘trusted’ me, not ‘does‘, ‘did.’
”Severus, she is a very confused young lady at the moment. She needs time, time to realise what is now and what was then. Perhaps it is a good thing that this has all come to the fore.”
“GOOD! How can it be good? I have just destroyed her very soul Albus, where is the good in that?”
“You have not destroyed her soul Severus, it is still there, intact. The only way now for her is forewords. Shall we go to dinner, I shall ask Poppy to sit with Nina.”
“I would rather be here when she wakes Albus, I shall have some food sent up from the kitchens.”
“No Severus.” He told him softly. “She will be asleep for a while yet and you need a break. Besides, I am sure that Miss Granger would be relieved to see you. She will only wonder if you and Nina are both absent.”
“Ah yes, Miss Granger. You know Albus, we really do not give that girl as much credit as she deserves.”
Albus turned his head so that Severus would not see the smile he could not contain.
“Indeed Severus. Indeed.”
After calling Poppy and asking her to sit with Nina for a while they went to dinner.
From the head table Severus, as was his way, glared at the students across the four house tables until his eyes met Miss Grangers. She looked tired and worn but to her credit, she was acting normally in front of her friends. He knew she could be trusted to keep quiet about today. He gave her a barely perceptible nod to let her know everything was fine. Her only acknowledgement was a brief twitch of her lips. Only Albus noticed.
The meal continued with no one any the wiser that anything untoward had gone on today. Albus had told the staff that Severus was unwell and was unable to take classes that afternoon. Harry and Ron thought that Hermione had been assisting Professor MacGonagall with a private project.
As soon as he finished eating, Severus got up to go back to Nina’s rooms.
“Severus.”
He turned to Albus.
“I would like to speak to you, in my office, I shall join you shortly.”
Resigned, the Potions Master made his way to the Headmasters office. He would have preferred to go and sit with Nina, Albus knew that, but Severus could not argue with him. He did not have to wait long before Albus joined him.
“We have an Order meeting tonight Severus.”
“Yes I know, but you do not need me to be there.”
“I do need you to be there. There is much to tell and your input is vital. Nina will be fine. Miss Granger has asked if she might bring her homework down to Nina’s rooms and sit with her for a while this evening. Harry and Ron shall of course accompany us.”
“I would seem that I do not have a choice Headmaster.” Severus sighed wearily.
So Hermione stayed with a sleeping Nina. She caught up on the lessons she had missed that afternoon, did her homework, took off her shoes and settled on the bed next to Nina so that she could read. It was not long before she too was fast asleep.
At number twelve Grimauld Place, things were not quite so peaceful.
The kitchen was full to capacity as Albus told them about Nina and Severus related the events of his and Nina’s meeting with Voldemort. They did not mention all of the abuse that Nina had suffered before arriving at Hogwarts, nor did they tell them about what happened today. Only that she had run away from home because things there were very bad and how she came to be at Hogwarts.
Harry and Ron were upstairs playing wizards chess and sulking about not being included in the meeting.
“She’s our friend now Harry, we have a right to know what’s going on in there.”
“I know Ron, but they're probably just being told what we already know and if there is anything else Fred and George will tell us after.”
“Yeah, I suppose your right, but I still don’t think it’s fair.”
“Oh my goodness!” Mrs Weasley exclaimed She had just remembered the dark haired little girl that she had put on the train that day on Platform 9¾
.
“But she was just a little snippet of a girl She cannot be more than twelve or thirteen.”
Everyone turned to look at Molly Weasley as she went redder and redder.
“You know Miss Manohel?” Severus’ voice was incredulous.
“No. I…it’s just…when I was seeing the children on to the train at the start of term there was a young girl standing on her own. She was looking at the train and seemed nervous so I….well I put her on it and told her not to worry, that she would soon make friends. To be honest I didn’t give her another thought until just now, I mean it didn‘t enter my head that she might be muggle. She would never have got onto the platform if she was, would she.?”
“No Molly she would not, do not look so worried. You have actually done all of us, and her, a favour.”
“Then where is she now Albus?” Mad eye Moody wanted to know. “Why isn’t she here so we can take a look at her?”
“She is at Hogwarts. She has had a very eventful week and is spending some time in her rooms with Miss Granger.”
“Restin’” Moody groused. “She can rest any time. She needs to be here so we can meet her, see what she’s like.”
“Miss Manohel is not an object to be examined Moody and is entitled to some leisure time.”
Moody glared at Severus but said no more.
“Well I can’t wait to meet her, anyone who can tell old mouldy to get lost is o.k. in my book.”
“Indeed Nymphadora.”
“Urrgh! Don’t call me that Albus, you know I hate it.”
“I too would like to meet this young lady. She sounds extraordinary.”
“Oh but she is Lupin. Very much so.”
Severus glared at Lupin. He did not like the werewolf and he certainly did not want Nina anywhere near him.
Kingsley Shacklebolt stepped forward.
“When will we meet her Albus? We are all naturally curious.”
“She is a rather shy person Kingsley. Severus and I shall try to persuade her to meet you all soon.”
“Huh! Snape persuade, more like scare her into coming.”
Severus was ready to hex Moody. He was already feeling guilty and out of sorts about Nina.
Albus spoke up.
“Alistair, Severus has not in intimidated Miss Manohel at any time. In fact, she thinks very highly of him.”
There were a few snickers around the room but when they saw Albus’ face was deadly serious, they quieted.
“As I have already said, when she is ready, we shall bring her here to meet you all.”
“Albus.”
“Yes Arthur.”
“I take it that the Ministry knows nothing of her?”
“No they do not, and I should like to keep it that way.”
“I quite agree with you Albus. If Fudge found out he would do everything in his power to get hold of her. Make her into some kind of secret weapon to use for his own ends.”
Severus looked at Kingsley.
“Then we shall have to make sure that they do not. Though I do think that they would not find it easy to make Miss Manohel do anything that she does not want to do.”
“Is that right Severus?”
“It is Arthur.”
As the meeting broke up and the members began to talk among themselves and tucked into the wonderful spread that Molly always laid on for them, Severus told Albus that he was going back to Hogwarts.
“I thought you might. Say hello to Nina for me.” He told him quietly.
“If she is even speaking to me Albus.”
“She will my boy. She will.”
Severus went out of the front door and apperated to the gates of Hogwarts. As he made his way inside he pondered if he would even get to see Nina. ‘Maybe he would be locked out of her rooms again.’ He went to his rooms to wash and change his clothes and it was with a heavy heart that he then made his way to Nina’s rooms.
He knocked on the door but there was no reply. He tried once more then stroked the horn on the Unicorn. To his surprise the door opened. He wondered where Kali was, she was normally the one to answer the door.
He walked inside and could see no one. Unable to resist he went over to the bedroom door. It was ajar so he stuck his head inside. There in the bed was Nina, just as he had left her, but he noticed that she was not alone.
On top of the duvet was a mess of bushy hair. ‘Miss Granger.’
As if she had sensed someone watching her Hermione sat up with a start. “Professor Snape?” She asked. She was bleary eyed and not yet sure where she was.
“Yes Miss Granger.”
“I….I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to fall asleep. Has something happened?”
“No. Everything is fine. You may as well stay with Nina for tonight, if you wish to that is. It is late and you are obviously very tired.”
“If you think it will be alright, I mean what if she wakes up and finds me here. I don’t think that she was too happy with me the last time….when I gave her the potion.”
“ I am sure it will be fine Miss Granger. It was kind of you to stay with her this evening.”
“Yes, well I like Nina, I’d like to be her friend. If she will let me that is.”
“Get some sleep Miss Granger, and might I suggest you will be more comfortable in the bed. I am sure that there spare nightwear around here somewhere. Goodnight.”
“Goodnight Professor.”
When the Professor had gone, Hermione undressed, pulled a nightie out of a drawer and donned it. With a big yawn she climbed into the enormous bed and fell straight back to sleep.
Severus unfortunately did not fall asleep so easily. He tossed and turned for most of the night. He was unable to get the images that he had seen in Nina’s mind, out of his head. He lived with guilt for most of his adult life but none of it compared to this. Not for him. When he did eventually nod off it was to dreams of Nina. The worst kind of dreams. Nina leaving him with Voldemort. Unicorns running out of the Forest and trying to spear him for hurting their girl. Nina casting the Avada on him while she accused him of lying to her and he could not move out of the way because spiders had bound him with their threads. . Nina being dragged away by ‘Uncle Pete’ and begging Severus to help her. But he didn’t help her. He, Severus, told her that she was a slut as he watched as she was pushed to the ground by her Uncle who began to climb on top of her.
Fortunately before anything could happen, he woke up suddenly, sweat pouring down his forehead and into his eyes, stinging them. The sheets were clinging to his skin with perspiration. He wiped his eyes and got up, trembling from the intensity of his nightmare. He knew there was no point trying to sleep now, he did not want to anyway. It was only about five am so he went to the bathroom to relieve himself and take a shower, all the time wondering what this day would bring.
Nina awoke with a splitting headache. Groaning, stiff and sore she forced herself to turn over in her bed. When she saw someone lying there in front of her she started.
“EEK!”
Hermione stirred and turned towards her.
“Oh, Nina, I’m sorry. It’s just that ...that ...well, IfellasleepinherelastnightandProfessorSnapesaidIshouldstayand…..” Everything came out in one big breath.
“Huh?” Nina looked at he like she was crazy. “What did you say?”
“Sorry.”
Hermione could not help the giggle that escaped her lips as she realised how she must have sounded.
“I sat here with you last night while the Headmaster and Professor Snape were at a meeting. I guess I must have fallen asleep. When Professor Snape came back he suggested I stay because it was so late. I borrowed one of your nightgowns by the way, I hope you don’t mind.”
“No, of course I don’t mind. Err, why did you sit with me? I don’t remember us being here together. And why did the Professor come in? I don’t understand. Has something happened that I don’t know about?”
“Well yes, kind of. Maybe it would be better if Professor Snape explained it to you.”
“Explained what? Hermione I don’t understand.”
“I can’t, it’s complicated. Look, do you mind if I get some clothes sent down and take a shower? Then we can talk some.”
“Sure. You can borrow some thing of mine to wear if you want. We’re about the same size. Kali has filled the wardrobe with so many things I don’t think I’ll ever get to wear them all.”
“Your on. Tell you what, I’ll get my shower and order us some breakfast while you get yours, then we can have a trying on session. What do you say?”
“A what?”
“The girls in my dorm do it all the time. I don’t usually join in but I think it would be fun with you.”
“Okay, but I need to pee first.”
“Me too. I’ll race you to the loo.”
Both girls ran to the bathroom laughing and shoving each other to try and get there first. Hermione just beat her and Nina danced about with her legs and eyes crossed as she waited for her turn.
“Hurry up Hermioneeee. I’m going to burst.”
“Well you keep making me laugh and it makes me pee more.”
They were very loud.
Severus was about to leave his rooms when there was a loud pounding on his door. He was already in a bad mood and did not need some snivelling student pestering him. He yanked his door open to see four second year Slytherin students looking at him wild eyed.
“This had better be important.” He growled at them.
“Yes Sir. Sorry Sir. We were passing and heard it Sir. The new girls room. Screaming Sir.”
They were all trying to speak at once but Severus got the gist of it.
“Get to breakfast.”
He told them, trying to act as if it was nothing but a minor nuisance that he had to deal with. He waited until they turned the corner from the dudgeons and ran to Nina’s room.
‘Shit, now what?’ He hoped it wasn’t another occurrence of yesterday. He did not think he could cope. He did not bother knocking, just turned the handle and as the door opened he rushed in to hear laughing and giggling and screams of delight. He stopped short, waiting to see if he was imagining it.
“Ha Ha. You can’t wear that with those. You look like somebody’s grandma”
“Well look who’s talking Miss orange t-shirt and purple knickers.” “Where did all this stuff come from?”
“I don’t know, Kali keeps bringing it. There’s loads of it.”
The giggling and bantering continued for a few minutes as Severus stood amazed at what he was hearing. It sounded like Nina and Miss Granger were really enjoying themselves. Smiling to himself he decided to sneak out and leave them to it. He turned to leave and had just put his hand to the doorknob when the two girls came bursting into the room. Hermione in a terrible long flowery dress that was several sizes too big for her and Nina in the orange t-shirt and purple knickers. The stopped dead when they saw the Professor, shock on their faces. He in turn turned beetroot red, especially when he noticed Nina’s clothes. Or lack of them.
“Professor?” They both spoke at once.
“I err…I was just…”
‘Shit! This looked bad. This was bad. They’ll think I’m a peeping bloody Tom.
“There was a…..they knocked you see…and screams…the boys….”
The two girls looked at him. Nina seemed to realise what she wasn’t wearing and was trying to pull part of Hermione’s enormous dress across the front of herself. Both of them blushing as much as Severus’ cheeks reddened while they tried to stop themselves from giggling again. This time at the look on the Potion Masters face.
“Yes well…you are …I have to go.”
And he shot out of the door, slamming it behind him and heading straight back to his rooms.
He was so embarrassed he did not think that he would be able to look either of them in the face again. Ever.
The two girls however were in hysterics. They were laughing so much that their sides were aching
They tried to order breakfast and the poor elves down in the kitchens were so confused by the hysterical babble that came from the two girls they ended up with a breakfast that consisted of melon with gravy and a bowl of empty pea pods. This only made them worse. It was a good hour and a half after Severus had left them that they manage to dress themselves properly and head down to the Hall to see if there was anything left to eat.
They sat at the Griffindor table together with Ginny. They did not mention the Potions Master when they explained to Ginny why they were so giddy.
Draco Malfoy saw Nina enter with the Granger girl. He hoped that she would not get into trouble when he had left her yesterday. She certainly seemed in good spirits now so it cannot have been too bad. He was genuinely pleased for her. He wished his father did not want him to report to him about her, he truly liked Nina and did not wish her any harm.
Breakfast passed without event and the three girls trotted of. Hermione and Ginny wanted to take her to Griffindor tower and introduce her to some of the other students. By lunch time Nina felt like she was the luckiest person in the world. These people liked her, they didn’t know anything about her, they just accepted her as she was and expected nothing from her. It was the first time in her life that she felt a part of something normal and she was happy. She had no memory whatsoever of yesterday after she and Draco had come down the stairs, wondering fleetingly what had happened to him and where he had gone. But she soon forgot about him when she was introduced to the game of exploding snap
Hermione was not about to remind her, she knew that at some point she would have to find the Professor and warn him that Nina wanted to know about yesterday. But after this morning she was not looking forward to it. Right now though they were having fun. Hermione guessed rightly that this was a first for Nina and she was not going to be the one to spoil things for her. It was the first time that Hermione had had a girl friend and she was enjoying herself as much as Nina.
Eventually they all began to head down to lunch.
Nina took hold of Hermione’s arm as they walked.
“Thank you Hermione, I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun in my life.”
“There’s no need to thank me, it’s been just as much fun for me as it has for you. I’ve really enjoyed today.”
They headed on down, trying to catch up with the others. Ginny was waiting at the bottom of the stairs for them.
“Come on you two, the food will be gone if you don’t hurry.”
They laughed.
“Ginny, will you go in with Nina? I just have to see someone, I wont be long.”
They gave her a puzzled look but as she offered no explanation they smiled and went into the Hall.
Hermione was not looking forward to this. At all.
She knocked on the door of the potions office.
‘Maybe he isn’t here. Maybe he’s already at lunch or had to go out or something. Please let him not be here.’
But she was not surprised when a voice shouted “Enter.”
She went in and quietly closed the door behind her.
Severus was sitting at his desk catching up on his marking when he realised who had come in. He forced himself to keep control. ‘I shall not blush’ he told himself.
“Miss Granger, what can I do for you?”
He could not exactly be his usual mean self to her, not after this morning and her help yesterday. Still he felt uncomfortable and was secretly pleased to see that she looked equally so.
Hermione kept her gaze on a spot somewhere above his left shoulder. “Sir, I thought I had better let you know erm, that Nina does not seem to have any memory of what happened yesterday. She asked me if some thing had happened, but I did not know what to say so I erm…I told her that you would be the best one to explain things.” She still kept her eyes averted and could feel her face colouring.
“Thank you for informing me Miss Granger. Will that be all?”
“Yes Sir, except she seems to be in very good spirits today. I…I have to go to lunch.”
Hermione shot out of the door, though she still managed to close it softly behind her.
This time it was Severus’ turn to laugh. And laugh he did. “Thank you Miss Granger.” He said to no one. “Thank you.”
When Albus stepped through the floo to Severus’ office he was most surprised to find him laughing so heartily. His Potions Master never laughed like this. At least he had never heard him do so. But he knew better than to ask what the joke was, Severus would never tell him. They went to lunch as soon as he had calmed down. Albus never did find out what had amused him.
