LEECH
Chapter 14
Kathy stared up at the imposing figure and gulped. She had no idea what just happened, only that it had scared her and her first reaction was to freeze when she saw Mr Snape looking angrily down on her. Then she remembered the elf in her arms and felt her own irritation that he’d not even offered her a hand to get up.
When a student stepped up to her and offered his hand, she automatically reached for it, only to see it slapped away by Severus as he growled at the boy to return o his seat.
Kathy’s eyes narrowed and she glared at Severus, purposely pulling at front of his robes with one hand to pull herself up, almost pulling him over as she did. She didn’t care that his eyebrows shot up into his hairline, or that someone snickered behind her. She ignored the surprise and indignation on his face when she shoved the bundle into his arms.
It’s poorly.” She stated, before stalking off, pulling open the door and walking through, slamming it behind her.
Kathy re-opened the door immediately, refusing to look at anyone as she exited the broom closet and headed for another door.
“Err Miss.” Kathy turned to the voice.
A young woman with bushy brown hair stood at yet another door, holding it open. “This is the way out, that’s the supply cupboard.” She said, a slightly bemused look on her face and a small smile that reached her eyes as Kathy looked at her.
“Thank you.” She said, trying to inflect some dignity into the words, all the time doubting she’d managed.
As the door closed behind her, she let out a huge breath. “What on earth just happened?”
As if on cue, Albus came down the corridor towards her.
Raised voices were heard from the classroom, and a moment later the door opened and a boy came dashing out carrying the bundle of elf. “Have to take this to the hospital wing.” He mumbled by way of explanation, then hurried on his way.
Albus watched the boy disappear round the corner and turned back to Kathy, offering his arm. “You seem a little out of sorts my dear, anything I can help with?”
Her shoulders slumped in relief when she saw the amused sparkle in the old man’s eyes. “I’m kind of lost. I don’t know how, but I ended up in… there.” She nodded her head at the classroom door. “I don’t think Mr Snape was too happy to see me.”
“Don’t let it bother you, Severus is rarely pleased to see anyone.” He led her back to the potions office and opened the door to her rooms.
“How did you do that? He keeps it locked.”
“As Headmaster, I have a few privileges. Now, would you care to tell me what happened.”
Albus snapped his fingers and a tray of tea appeared.
Kathy stared at it for a moment, then explained about her day, ending with the furore in the classroom. “I think if I’d walked into another cupboard I’d have stayed there to be honest. I couldn‘t have faced anybody if I did it again.”
Albus laughed openly, and soon Kathy laughed too, though partly in embarrassment. “I believe it was your drawing of the elf’s magic that caused you to unintentionally disapperate, flit from one place to another. You did nothing wrong my dear, it was merely a misfortunate occurrence. I do wish however that I’d been there to witness the looks on the faces of Severus and the students.”
“I felt a right idiot to be honest, but I didn’t mean to be there, it just happened. I hope the elf’s alright.”
“Elves are hardy little creatures, I am sure he’ll be fine once he’s rested. I cannot promise the same for my Potions Master however. I will arrange for you to have the necessary materials you need to occupy yourself with housework, and of course groceries if you prefer to make your own meals. Would you prefer the elves to stay away for the time being?”
“I don’t think they’ll want to return after what I did to that one, but yes please, if you don’t mind.”
“Well they will still need to provide you with provisions and take your laundry, perhaps take care of the fires, but other than that, you will have free rein to look after yourself and your rooms as you see fit. I will also provide you with a number of books if that’s alright. ‘Hogwarts; A History’, and several others that might help you understand our world a little better, I also have a rather old volume with a small piece about Leeching, perhaps we could look at that one together sometime.”
“Thanks Mr Dumbledore, maybe this evening, if you’re not busy that is.” She hoped he would come, Severus didn’t look at all happy with her this afternoon and she didn’t really want to face him unless she had to, and certainly not alone. “Do you… I could cook tea, if you want to that is. You don’t have to.”
It would be a pleasure to dine with you this evening. Thank you for inviting me.”
“What about the children? I mean they saw me, and I’m not supposed to exist am I.”
“They will soon forget, so much happens at Hogwarts there is always something new to grab their attention.”
Kathy cheered up a bit, the thought of doing something as simple as making a meal for someone else raising her spirits slightly. It made her feel useful at least, if only for the short term.
Later that afternoon, Kathy heard Severus enter his office, but she did her best to ignore the bumps, bangs and clunks that drifted through, the occasional moan and curse over whatever he was doing, (marking essays) and occupied herself with peeling the potatoes.
By the time Severus had finished his marking, his nose was twitching from the smell of cooking that drifted in under his door. The dungeons never smelled so good, being too far away from the main parts of the castle to enjoy the odours that normally permeated the ground floors from the kitchens. He practically floated past the door that led to Kathy’s rooms several times, inhaling deeply.
When a knock sounded on the door to the corridor, he frowned. “Come in.” He drawled, frowning when the Headmaster entered.
“Ah Severus, I can smell I am expected.”
Severus’ eyebrows rose. “I beg your pardon?”
“Mrs Ripley kindly invited me for supper this evening, to say thank you for rescuing her this afternoon, and I think she is also a bit lonely. How could I refuse?”
“Severus snorted and headed out as the Headmaster made his way to Kathy’s rooms.
‘Why did she ask Albus to supper and not me? I was the one who’s class was disrupted. I am the one who rescued her. I was the one dragged from my bed last night because she was frightened by a mirror.’ The smell of food coming from the Great hall suddenly held no appeal for him whatsoever. The smells from Kathy’s rooms were much more appetizing, he decided. Only he hadn’t been invited, oh no, it was Albus bloody Dumbledore who won that honour. It wasn’t bloody fair.
All four houses squirmed before the terrible glares bestowed upon them from the high table. Even the staff eyed Severus warily this evening as he stabbed at his food, seeming to force it down his throat, rather than enjoying it as he usually did.
Albus had never laughed so much in a long time. Kathy’s tales of childhood misadventures, the antics of some of the workers at the bacon factory, and even her life with David and the girls, though more solemn, he found fascinating.
The simple meal of tender liver and onions, mashed potatoes and cabbage was extremely satisfying, more so because of being cooked individually, rather than on a large scale by elves.
Severus had halted in his reading a number of times at the laughter that filtered through to his office, and he wondered what was being said that amused them both.
Over the next few weeks Severus avoided Kathy, while Albus visited most evenings. Sometimes he would arrive after supper, at others before. Severus was subjected to the aroma of cooking after classes each day as he sat in his office marking the days work, but he never received an invitation to join her.
Kathy on her part, avoided Severus like the plague. She was convinced he hated her, no matter how much Albus insisted it wasn’t so. She and the Headmaster were on a first name basis now, and she enjoyed his company. He was like a granddad she supposed, not that she’d ever had one to compare him with.
Albus informed her that Christmas break was in a couple of weeks, and that he wanted to introduce her to an assortment of magical animals to discover their effect on her when she came in contact with them. He also wanted to know what kind of strength she would draw from the tree’s in the Forbidden Forest, as well as the Giant squid and even the water in the Great Lake. The lake was teeming with all kind of magical life and it would be interesting to see if she could Leech from the water alone, without needing to make contact with the creatures inside.
