Chapter 14
Waking Nightmare
As the firelight grew dim, and the moonlight eased through the lead paned windows, Snape stirred restlessly, his lank hair clinging to his face in tendrils, still slumbering, his subconscious imagination seizing on the mixed images sent from Orra"s dream, his own worst memories and Niamh"s meddling. His bucolic bliss found in the fantasy of making love to the beautiful redhead under the warm sun, cushioned by sweet smelling grass, morphed into the terror of a Deatheater revel as the stones became dividers between black-robed masked wizards and witch. Sunlight became torchlight flickering ominously on the stones and glimmering on the silver masks. Orra"s soft cries of pleasure became screams of terror in his mind. Even in his dream, he hesitated, not willing to inflict pain on the Muggle underneath him. The air crackled as the sizzling pain of a Crucio aimed at his back forced Severus to full consciousness. He started, panting and panicked, nearly throwing himself off the sofa. His conscious self knew full well that Voldemort himself had cursed him on a similar night, very long ago, as his comrades cold laughter had echoed in his ears, the night of his first revel, the first Crucio, his first failure.
Forcing his breathing to a normal rhythm, Snape fought to acclimate himself to his surroundings. One hand grasped the back of the sofa, the knuckles on that hand whiter than ever. The other clasped his wand in a long learned defensive position. Slowly, he realized where he was and calmed just slightly.
"Severus?" Orra called to him softly, framed by moonlight pouring through the windows of her room, but hovering in the doorway, concerned, but unwilling to intrude further into her own home.
"Yes?" he replied, his voice gruff, heavy with the effort to repress fear, and interrupted sleep.
"Are you all right?" She moved to the side of the couch to lay her cool hand on his forehead, searching for a fever.
"Yes, nightmare," he murmured, still amazed at the gentleness she possessed and shared with him.
"Ah "" she whispered, "I understand those. You called out my name though?"
"I did?" he asked, incredulous and ashamed, his cheeks turning slightly pink.
"Yes, you did."
"It was just a nightmare. I dreamt you were in danger." He pinched his nose and closed his eyes against the sight of the beautiful woman in the nearly opaque nightgown.
"I"m not," she reassured him. "Come, to bed, now that you"re awake. Spare yourself a stiff neck in the morning."
He tried not to stare at the dark circles of her areolas as they peeked at him from under her gown. More than a stiff neck "
A slow knowing smile spread over her face. Severus knotted his brows together, concerned that she somehow heard his thoughts. She moved to pull him to his feet by his hand and shoved him good-naturedly towards his room. Grudgingly, he half-stumbled toward the door. She brushed past him, turning the bed down, and waited, one hand holding onto the bed post. He half-thought that she was going to tuck him in. He shook his head to clear that matronly image from his thoughts. He slipped between the cool, soft sheets and pulled the blanket up to his waist.
"Sweet dreams, only," she teased him gently, a tired smile lifting her pale lips.
He graced her with a real smile. As she turned to leave, he called out, "Orra?"
"Yes?" She paused at the door. "Do you need something? Water perhaps?"
"No, well, yes, just a question though," he stumbled over his own words, not quite sure how to approach the question that had bothered him since he eavesdropped on her conversation with Murphy.
"Ask away!" she answered, returning to sit on the edge of the bed and look into his eyes with complete trust.
"Did Dumbledore force you to take a vow to care for me?" He dropped his eyes from hers, not really understanding why he needed to know.
"Oh my," she exclaimed softly, wringing her hands in her lap. "Now that is a subject I don"t think we should broach in the middle of the night."
"He did force you into this, that bastard!" Snape snarled angrily, pushing himself to upright. "I cannot believe he would saddle a Muggle with me!" Snape ranted. Orra wisely let him spew his venom. She shivered and hugged herself, closing herself to his anger. "That meddling old " bastard! Just a bastard! If I ever get my hands on that portrait again ""
"Easy, Severus. He didn"t force me to do anything I didn"t want to do, or wouldn"t do." She attempted to appease or ease his anger. "My relationship with Dumbledore is very complicated. Even I don"t fully understand why things happened the way they did."
"I am so sorry for " this!" Snape motioned to himself. "I"ll be gone as soon as I can."
"No, you will stay as long as you like. Severus, you are a guest here. I decided long before I met you that you were a friend, if Dumbledore trusted you, then I trusted you, and there is no reason for you to be angry on my behalf. Maybe, someday, when the time is right, I"ll tell you how I met Albus Dumbledore. But for now, just know that you are welcome here, and safe. He always told me that this place was sacred, that his magic was protected here, whatever that meant."
"I am having trouble believing you would be so willing to help, to trust." Snape ran his hands through his hair. Orra moved closer to him, covering his hands with hers.
"No worries, Severus. Something, whether instinct, intuition or your magic, tells me that you and I are exactly where we are meant to be. I am glad you are here. I am glad I could help. I hope we become friends."
He lifted his face to meet her forthright gaze. She smiled. Slowly, a smile overtook his face as well and he clasped her hands, lowering them to her lap. She leaned in, kissing his cheek, and whispered, "Just try not to think so much. Everything will work out in the end. Have a little faith?"
"I think I shall put my faith in you, Ms. Orra O"Shea."
"And you have mine," she countered. She stretched, and yawned, blinking. "Now, shove over, I don"t want to sleep alone."
Snape coughed, choking on the words that nearly spilled from his lips. Instead, he silently moved over, making room for the lithe woman who snuggled into him, her back to his side, and promptly fell asleep with a contented sigh. Hesitantly, he lay his hand on her hip, almost afraid that she wasn"t real. He quickly followed her into peaceful slumber, his dreams sweeter, futuristic, and promising.

Meanwhile, in town, a very naked Garda Murphy knelt on a thick braided rug at the foot of Kellyn"s bed, his hands clasped behind his back, head bowed, waiting for his Mistress" forgiveness. Kellyn stepped into his line of sight, brandishing a leather covered paddle. He gulped down his fear, and steadied his breathing. Kellyn stepped close to him, lifting his chin with the edge of the paddle so that his eyes met hers.
"You deserve a sound spanking, pet," she stated softly.
"Yes, Mistress," he answered dutifully, fully aware that his nightmare was just about to begin, without sleep.
A/N: Much shorter than the previous, but the muse wanted to play, then disappeared. Hopefully, the fickle thing will be back tomorrow. I know the characters are too many and very confusing. I had this well in hand then, somehow, they all made a break for freedom. If anyone wants to read more of Kellyn and Murphy, leave a comment and I"ll try to lure that damn Muse out of the closet.
