The chaos continued when they all got home. The infamous reporter Rita Skeeter had written a front page article that made the Ministry look bad. Arthur and Percy were spending almost all of their time at the Ministry trying to clean up the mess. Molly was incredibly stressed, so James and the two oldest Weasley boys pulled together to do everything they could to help.
A few days later there was a knock at the front door. Bill answered the door and Lucius Malfoy stepped in. “James!” Bill called out. “You have a visitor!”
James put away the dish he was drying and hurried out. “Lucius… to what do I owe the visit?” he asked as he leaned up to greet the blonde with a gentle kiss.
Lucius looked a little uncomfortable. “I um… was doing some thinking about what happened. You know… the…” he made a sign in the air.
“The Dark Mark?” James sighed. “What about it?”
“Does this still work?” Lucius asked, holding up his hand to show a ring that was shaped like a dragon. It had tiny emeralds for eyes, and it’s body was wrapped around the pale slender finger.
“Yes,” James nodded. “Remember; press the head to be transported somewhere safe. Press the tail to summon me.”
Lucius suddenly looked very relived. “Good. Could you… I mean, could you get another one, for Draco? I’ll pay for it. I know enchanted rings aren’t easy to come by and are pricy.”
James shook his head. “Don’t worry about it. I’ll get him one. Have you told him?”
Lucius nodded. “He’s having a bit of trouble with it, but I’m sure he’ll come around in time.”
“I hope so,” James sighed. He was grateful that Harry seemed to be taking the whole thing better than expected.
“Well, I had better be going,” Lucius said as he pulled James into a hug. “Please come to visit me soon.”
“I will,” James smiled as he kissed his lover again. “As soon as I can.”
Arthur and Percy came home just as Lucius was leaving. The two men that had once been enemies nodded as they passed each other. “What was Lucius doing here?” Arthur asked, more out of curiosity than anything else.
“He wanted to ask me to get an enchanted ring for Draco,” James answered as he went back to washing dishes.
“Ah,” Arthur nodded and sat down at the table. Molly brought him his dinner and sat down with him. “Everything is such a mess,” he sighed. “Rita Skeeter is now interviewing Ministry employees.”
“That woman,” Molly shook her head in disgust.
“Well, at least she hasn’t found out about Barty’s elf being caught with the wand that conjured it,” Arthur said.
“Yes, that certainly would be a horrible scandal,” Percy agreed. “Mr. Crouch is already very embarrassed about having had such a misbehaved servant.”
“You mean slave…” Hermione growled. “Mr. Crouch didn’t exactly pay her.”
Percy started to open his mouth but James knocked him to the floor and stood over him. “I win, you lose,” James grinned.
Percy was too shocked to move. “Please take it easy on my son James,” Molly frowned. “He’s young and enthusiastic.”
“And annoying,” James muttered, but backed off as requested. “By the way, Hermione, there’s someone I want you to meet.”
“Oh?” Hermione raised her eyebrow.
“Mitsy!” James called out.
There was a loud crack and a house elf appeared. “Master called Mitsy?” she squeaked.
“You have a house elf!” Hermione shouted in disbelief.
“Yes,” James nodded. “I do.” He knelt down in front of the elf who gazed up at him affectionately. “Now Mitsy, there are two things I want you to do for me okay? First, I want you to go with Hermione there, and have a nice long chat with her. Then, I want you to stay here and help Molly out because I have to go away for a few days.”
“Yes Master!” the little house elf squeaked enthusiastically.
“You’re leaving?” Harry asked, looking disappointed. “Will you be back before I leave for school at least?”
James pulled Harry into a hug for the first time since the night they’d been reunited. “I should be. Listen Harry, I know we haven’t gotten to spend much time together recently. I’m sorry about that. Things are just so screwed up right now, and I’ve been trying to balance my attention between you and Lucius. You know about him now, so that will be easier. But sweetheart, I promise when things settle down we’ll spend some time together.”
Harry nodded and let go. He understood that there was a lot going on, he just wished he could get his father to himself for a while.
James ran upstairs and quickly packed a small bag, and then left. Harry went upstairs with Ron while Hermione spent most of the night trying to make Mitsy see why she deserved better treatment.

In the morning everyone scurried around the Burrow getting ready to leave for school, James still hadn’t come back. Harry looked out the window every few minutes, sighing in disappointment when his dad was still nowhere to be seen.
It was an hour before they had to leave when James finally came through the front door. “You made it!” Harry cried out with a huge smile on his face.
“Of course I made it,” James grinned. “I promised.”
Before he could say or do anything else, a small brown blur flew through the kitchen and pounced on James. Mitsy clung to James’ leg wailing hysterically. James settled his gaze on Hermione. “What did you do to her?”
Hermione tsk’d and stomped off in a huff. “She tried to get Mitsy to demand wages and vacation days,” Ron answered for her.
James let out a deep sigh and patted the distressed house elf on the head until she calmed down. “Where’s Arthur?” he asked, noticing the man’s absence. “I thought he was going with us to King’s Cross.”
“There was a bit of an emergency,” Molly answered. “Moody got in a bit of trouble last night.”
“Ah,” James nodded in understanding. No explanation was needed; James was familiar with Alistair Moody.
When it was almost time to leave Molly asked James to go down to the village and use the public phone to call them a cab. Normally they would have borrowed Ministry cars, but Ministry resources were tied up elsewhere.
James told Mitsy to go clean up the breakfast dishes, and then go back to Sirius. She went right to work, avoiding Hermione the rest of the morning.
It took a while for everyone to get down to the village with their trunks, but eventually they all got loaded up into the cabs and were on their way. It was an interesting ride to say the least. The cabbies weren’t used to driving people who had owls in cages. Ron’s owl was fluttering around its cage excitedly, causing Hermione’s cat Crookshanks to become rather annoyed.
It seemed like an eternity when they finally got to the train station and climbed out of the cabs. The next think they had to do was get through the barrier to platform 9- ¾. The trick was to do it so muggles didn’t notice. Because there were so many of them they had to do it in groups.
Harry, Ron, and Hermione found a compartment to sit in and made themselves comfortable, chatting amongst themselves like they did every year. The only unusual thing during the trip happened shortly after the lunch cart had gone by. Draco Malfoy stepped into their compartment all by himself. He glanced around quickly before shutting the door so no one else would see or hear him.
“Look,” he turned to Harry and sighed. “My father told me what was going on. I’m not happy about this, but this summer I saw my father go from being angry all the time to actually being happy for a change. He wants us to call a truce. I’m willing if you are.”
Harry nodded. “Yeah, a truce would be nice. I want my dad to be happy too.”
Both boys shook on it, pulling their hands away hastily. Draco left in a hurry, wanting to spend as little time with them as possible. He still had a reputation to protect.
