As quietly as they could, they taught Padfoot how to conjure a patronus to send a message to his world. At first Sirius had suggested he send the message, but unfortunately his attempt went through to their own world and only generated a response from James, who apparently was rather busy at the time.
Padfoot, thankfully, already knew how to conjure a patronus and it didn’t take long to teach him how to send a message with it. Remus hoped that James of his world had been taking enough notice of how to do the spell when he and Remus had talked the night Remus had communicated with Sirius across worlds.
“Where the hell are you?” James’s patronus shouted. Apparently he had been observant enough to see what Remus had done.
They all cringed and hoped no one downstairs had heard it.
“I’m in the kitchen,” Lily shouted back at him from downstairs.
“I didn’t say anything,” James called back.
“You just asked, very rudely, I might add, where I was,” Lily yelled in response.
The argument downstairs continued to escalate.
“Let’s hurry this up,” Sirius said. “Tell him how to do the spell and let’s all get out of here before we get arrested.”
Padfoot nodded and with his next message to James he sent a warning telling him to keep his voice down when he replied.
“I thought you said you’d left a note to tell James and Lily where you were,” Remus said.
“I did.”
Remus raised an eyebrow in question.
“I said I was going with you,” Padfoot replied. “I might not have given them all the details.”
“You didn’t tell them you were leaving their world, did you?” Remus asked.
Padfoot shook his head. “They’d only have tried to talk me out of it.”
“Can we get back to the matter at hand?” Remus’s double suggested. “Padfoot, Babe, how about you send the instructions for them to open the portal so we can get out of here?”
Sirius turned to Remus with a grin. “Babe,” he mouthed.
Remus gave him a dig in the ribs with his elbow. “Don’t get any ideas,” he warned.
Dumbledore gave Padfoot the instructions to open the portal and Padfoot relayed them to James. It took a few failed attempts, but eventually the portal opened in the attic and not before time.
They could hear James and Lily coming up the stairs to the attic. “I told you, I heard something up here,” James said.
The intruders hurried through the portal, piling into the Potters’ attic in the other dimension and quickly closed the portal behind them, just at the muggle Potters stumbled through the door.
“Do you think they saw anything?” Remus asked.
“Hopefully they’ll think it was imagination and forget as quickly as possible,” Dumbledore said.
“You went to another dimension without telling us?” James yelled at Padfoot after he had correctly determined which Sirius was which. “Did you think we’d let you go running off like that?”
Padfoot scowled at his friend. “Of course you wouldn’t. That’s why I didn’t tell you.”
“You had no right to run away!”
“I’m a grown man. I’ll do what I want.”
“A grown man who’s been living as a dog since before we left school,” James reminded him. “When we got your note we didn’t know what to think.”
Padfoot huffed. “I thought maybe you’d have been happy for me.”
“Happy?” James threw his hands into the air in a gesture so reminiscent of every other James Remus had known, he actually forgot for a moment it wasn’t the person he had grown up with. “You go running off with the double of the man you’ve been in love with since school, even knowing he’ll never be yours. Why would I be happy about that?”
Padfoot shoved James hard in the chest. “It’s my life to do with as I want.” With those words he turned into his animagus form and returned to Remus’s double’s side.
“If it’s your life then you should start living it instead of hiding out as a bloody dog every time the going gets tough,” James retorted.
“Back off, Potter,” Remus’s double snapped.
James looked at Remus’s double and then at Remus. “Which of you was here before?” he asked.
Remus raised his hand. “That would be me.”
Remus’s double stepped up in James’s face. “He’s not the one you need to worry about.”
“You brought another git back here?” James snapped at Padfoot. “What? Wasn’t the Remus we know and loathe enough for you? You have to bring another nasty swine back here with you?”
Remus’s double grabbed James by the throat and pushed him up against the wall. “Lay off of him, or you’ll have me to answer to.”
“Stop it,” Lily shouted. “Both of you.”
Sirius stepped forward and pulled Remus’s double off of James. “This isn’t helping.”
Dumbledore coughed behind them. “Perhaps a spot of tea might help calm things down,” he suggested.
Everyone apart from James looked at him as though he had grown a second head. James simply looked relieved that the Remus’s double had loosened his grip on his neck.
“Excuse me,” Lily said, “but who are you?”
“Oh yes, how rude of me. I’m Professor Albus Dumbledore, Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It’s a pleasure to meet you Miss Evans, or is it Mrs Potter here?”
“Lily, please,” Lily replied with a smile. She gestured towards the door and guided everyone back down the stairs.
There was no question that this house was owned by wizards. The books on the shelves were a mixture of muggle and wizard classics. The clinking of pots in the kitchen when no one was there let them know they were washing them magically. There was also a magical portrait of James’s parents taking pride of place in the living room.
Once everyone was seated Professor Dumbledore proceeded to explain to the Potters what they were doing there and their plans to put things right.
Padfoot, who had curled up on the lap of Remus’s double, turned back into his human form and glared at James. “And once everyone has returned to where they belong I’m going to open one last portal and go to Emberpelt’s world.”
“Emberpelt?” Sirius asked.
Padfoot’s hand flew to his mouth and he shot a guilty look at his love.
“It’s okay,” Remus’s double assured him. “I’d have told him when he asked if he hadn’t been so obnoxious.”
“You think Sirius is obnoxious?” James asked. “And he still wants to go live with you?”
“Not bloody likely,” Sirius said. “I’m going home with my Remus. I want my life back.”
James clutched his head. “There are too many Sirius Blacks and Remus Lupins round here for my liking.”
“Well, give Dumbledore time to find his spell and we’ll all be out of your hair,” Sirius said.
Dumbledore reached into his robes and pulled out the spell book. He began to flick through the pages while the rest of the group continued to bicker.
“Enough!” Dumbledore finally roared. Everyone stopped talking immediately and turned to the Headmaster. “Please, Lily, do you have somewhere quiet I may retire to in order to find what I need?”
Lily nodded and led him from the room. The rest of them sat around feeling rather contrite at his reprimand.
Remus snuggled closer to Sirius, enjoying a few moments of peace and quiet in the chaos their lives had become.
Across the room, his double and Padfoot were similarly entwined in each others arms. They couldn’t seem to keep from touching each other and were exchanging soft kisses every few seconds.
Sirius leaned down to nibble on Remus’s ear. “I think they’ve forgotten we’re here,” he said. “They’re in a world of their own.”
Remus smiled as he patted Sirius on the leg. “I remember when we used to get like that.”
“We still do,” Sirius whispered.
James coughed loudly. “I am still here, you know.”
Sirius ignored him, and in Remus’s opinion proceeded to get a little more frisky just to wind James up.
Padfoot and Emberpelt meanwhile were completely oblivious to everyone else in the room.
“Lily, let me come and help you with that,” James suddenly called and he ran for the door.
Sirius laughed and even Remus couldn’t help smiling. James Potter, supportive of his gay friends though he might be, didn’t want a front row seat for the show.
“Let’s leave them alone,” Remus suggested. “I’m sure we can find something helpful to do around here.”
Sirius looked at him as though he’d lost his mind. “You’re suggesting we go get Lily to give us some chores instead of watching a free show of two guys getting it on. It’s like live porn!”
Remus rolled his eyes, stood up and dragged Sirius up off the couch. “It’s us from another world. I doubt they’re going to do anything we haven’t already done, and even if they were, I find it kind of weird to be watching them.”
Sirius let Remus drag him from the room, but before they found Lily Sirius had taken control and dragged Remus into the closet, closing the door behind them.
“Does this bring back memories for you?” Sirius asked. Even though it was pitch black Remus could tell he was grinning.
“I can’t believe you’ve dragged me into a closet.”
Sirius laughed in his ear, sending shivers down his spine. “Come on, Remus. This is exactly the sort of thing I do.”
Remus chuckled. “You’re absolutely right.”
Remus wrapped his arms around Sirius’s back, pulling him up flush against him. He could feel Sirius’s hardness against his thigh and pressed against it.
“I want you,” Sirius whispered as he clutched Remus’s arse and squeezed his buttocks.
It wasn’t the time and it certainly wasn’t the place, but Remus’s desire for Sirius was just as strong.
They pulled away from each other just far enough that they could push aside their clothes.
Remus forgot they were inside the Potters’ closet the moment Sirius pushed his hand inside Remus’s pants. Remus groaned and bit into Sirius’s neck in an attempt to keep his noise to a minimum.
“Like that?” Sirius asked as he stroked Remus’s cock and fondled his balls.
Remus nodded and groped in the dark for the fastenings of Sirius’s own garments. He had to get inside him soon or he might not manage to hold it, not with the way Sirius was touching him.
Remus’s hands found flesh beneath the robes and shirt and he worked his hand lower, slipping them inside the back of Sirius’s pants. He used his other hand to find the zipper to his trousers and eased it down. His own trousers were down at his knees and as soon as Sirius’s were likewise he pulled their bodies together once more, savouring the feeling of flesh against flesh as they rubbed up against each other.
“Need to be in you,” Remus murmured into Sirius’s ear before nipping the lobe.
Sirius whined and Remus pushed him back against the door. “Do it,” Sirius gasped as he spread his legs wider.
Remus was torn between the idea of turning Sirius round and taking him from behind or going for the less comfortable position of doing this face to face. Sirius took the choice out of his hands with a hot kiss that left him breathless.
Sirius’s tongue was still in his mouth when Remus felt Sirius’s legs twisting round his back as he moved them into position. They had done this numerous times in various locations about Hogwarts and without a single word Sirius made it clear to Remus exactly what he needed right now.
Remus reached around Sirius’s back and delved lower to find his hole. He slipped his fingers inside and carefully pressed his way in. Sirius was still stretched from the night before, much as Remus himself was, and didn’t need much preparation.
Sirius bore down on his fingers, encouraging Remus to find the spot that always sent him soaring. When Remus found and rubbed against his prostate Sirius shook in his arms as his orgasm took him by surprise. He spilled between them, as Remus held him in place.
Sirius had barely come down from his high when Remus removed his fingers and replaced them with his dick.
“Oh god,” Sirius cried as Remus pounded into him. “Yes, Remus. God, yes.”
“Come for me again,” Remus gasped as he chased his own orgasm. “I know you’ve got another one in you. Come for me, Sirius.”
Sirius whimpered and moaned as Remus took him closer and closer to the edge. “Oh god.”
“Come for me,” Remus repeated right as he changed his angle and nailed Sirius’s sweet spot once more.
Sirius felt the hot flood of Remus’s release in his arse and in that moment he started to climax again.
They clung to each other, intimately joined, as they each sought to regain control over their racing hearts.
“Love you,” Sirius whispered.
“Love you too,” Remus replied.
Remus knew that sometimes they just had to fuck this way. It was fast, desperate and dirty, but occasionally, that was exactly what they needed. There would be time for less frenzied love making when they made it home.
They didn’t emerge from the cupboard until they heard Dumbledore calling from the hallway.
Remus righted his clothes as best he could and stumbled out into the light with Sirius close behind him.
“Please tell me you weren’t shagging in my closet,” James demanded.
“Okay, we won’t,” Sirius replied as he strolled past them and into the living room.
Their counterparts were right where they had left them, albeit a little rumpled as well.
“I have the spell,” Dumbledore said. “Now just remember this is going to send everyone back to their – our – worlds and once that happens we will be unable to travel through any more portals. This will hopefully prevent our less honourable doubles from causing any more trouble. It should also ensure those snatched who were muggles and squibs are able to return to their lives without having to defeat their wizard counterparts.”
“What’s to stop the doubles who have returned to their worlds from opening portals to contact those who haven’t yet found this way of travelling, and causing trouble by giving them the knowledge of how to do this?” Lily asked.
Dumbledore shook his head. “There are an infinite number of worlds out there, and even now another of our counterparts may be discovering how to travel through portals, even without the assistance of those already doing so. The best we can do is repair the damage we have done and try to ensure we are on our guard in the future.”
“Constant vigilance!” yelled Sirius, startling everyone in the room.
“Yes, quite,” Dumbledore replied. “Now are you all ready? I’m afraid I don’t know where you’ll go back to so be prepared to find yourself in a potentially sticky situation.”
“Wait a minute,” Remus said as Dumbledore raised his wand.
Dumbledore paused as Remus detached himself from Sirius and went across the room to Padfoot. He threw his arms around him and hugged him tight. “Take care, Padfoot,” he said.
Padfoot squeezed him back. “You too.”
Sirius looked over at Remus’s double.
“Don’t even think about it,” Emberpelt warned. “There’s only one Sirius Black I want in my arms and you’re not him.”
Sirius laughed. He felt the same way about Remus.
They waited with racing hearts as Dumbledore concentrated on working the spell that would send them all home. They each prayed it would work, because if it didn’t they were completely out of ideas.
A bright flash of light illuminated the room and time seemed to slow down.
Remus watched their doubles as they clung to each other. They all knew that if this went wrong the two new lovers would never see each other again.
Remus watched his double kiss Padfoot and it was the last thing he saw before everything went black.
When his vision returned he found himself in Peter’s basement and facing the dangerous end of the wand of James Potter.
“I think I remember what we forgot to do,” Sirius said from behind him. “Tell Peter and James about Dumbledore’s plan.”
Remus tried to turn round but he was securely tied to the seat of a chair. “I take it our doubles have been giving you trouble?” he said to James.
“And then some,” Peter replied from somewhere behind him. “But you’d know all about that, wouldn’t you?”
“Oh shit,” Sirius muttered. “They think we’re still our doubles.”
James kept his wand raised as he glared at Remus. “You don’t think we’d really fall for the old ‘we’ve magically switched back’ line do you?”
“Not a second time anyway,” Peter added. “This time we’re keeping you right here until the real Remus and Sirius get back. I think they’ll want to have a few words with the both of you.”
“We are the real Remus and Sirius,” Sirius said. “Dumbledore used a spell to send everyone back to their own worlds. There were so many of our doubles out of place it was the only way he could do it. A one way trip home that prevents any of us who were in another dimension from ever travelling through a portal again.”
“A likely story,” James said. “Do you really think we’re so stupid we can’t recognise our best friends?”
Remus rolled his eyes. “Normally I’d say no, but clearly I was wrong.”
“It’s us,” Sirius said. “Ask as anything and we’ll prove it.”
“Did the Falcons win their match last weekend?” Peter asked.
“Something we’re actually going to know,” Sirius snapped. “What part of we’ve been kidnapped and stuck on other worlds did you miss?”
“Don’t speak to Peter like that,” James barked. “The Remus and Sirius we know wouldn’t let something like getting kidnapped even happen to them.”
“Well, apparently we did,” Sirius replied. “Ask us something else.”
Remus wriggled his fingers, trying to free himself from his bonds. He felt skin and realised Sirius’s hands were similarly tied behind him and they were sitting back to back. He stroked Sirius’s fingers with his own and Sirius hooked their pinkie fingers together.
James and Peter meanwhile continued to debate what questions to ask. They discounted questions like who was landlord of the Leaky Cauldron, the name of Remus’s werewolf liaison person at the Ministry of Magic and a whole bunch of other questions they considered too easy.
“What’s written on Fawkes’s water bowl in Dumbledore’s office?” James asked.
“Er, water?” Remus guessed. He’d never taken any notice, usually being rather preoccupied whenever he’d been called to the Headmaster’s office.
“Is it?” Sirius asked.
“I don’t know,” James admitted.
“Then why ask such a bloody stupid question?” Sirius replied.
Before another argument could ensue Peter suddenly squeaked. “Look, James.”
Remus couldn’t see what Peter was looking at without twisting his head and when he did he was pointed to the vicinity of his back.
“What is it?” Sirius asked.
James and Peter crouched down to look between Remus and Sirius. “Do you see what I see?” Peter asked.
“I think so,” James replied.
“The Sirius we got landed with was a right homophobe,” Peter said. “He’d never do something like that.”
Remus realised what it was Peter had seen. Something as simple as their need to touch each other had succeeded in giving their friends reason to pause and consider that maybe they were telling the truth.
Before they could untie them, the room lit up with a patronus messenger from Dumbledore. “Sorry for the delay in making contact,” he said. “Found myself in a spot of bother when I took my double’s place. Apparently the one left on this world was having a bit of a run in with a couple of Aurors. Let me know you made it back home safely.”
“See!” Sirius said. “Now untie us will you. I’m dying for a piss.”
Remus chuckled and James and Peter quickly undid their bindings. Remus took his wand back from Peter and quickly assured Dumbledore that they had made it home safely.
James pulled Sirius into a hug, but was quickly shook off as Sirius made a dash from the room, presumably in search of the bathroom.
“Glad to have you back mate,” he shouted after him.
Peter and James then turned to Remus and grabbed him for a hug too.
“Don’t disappear like that again,” Peter scolded. “You and Sirius have some of the most bloody arrogant and irritating doubles out there.”
Remus shook his head. “There’ll be no more portal travelling for me or Sirius from now on. Just one trip would kill us.”
They made their way upstairs and Remus saw the damage that had been done in whatever had transpired between the doubles and James and Peter.
“What a mess,” he said as he pointed his wand at the broken table and fixed it.
“You should see your place,” James said as he started to repair the damage too. “Looks like a cyclone swept through.”
Remus flushed as he tried to recall the last time he’d done any cleaning. He was having a hard time remembering doing any at all. Maybe he wouldn’t mention that to his friends.
Sirius came down from upstairs and between the four of them they set the place to rights in very little time.
Once the place was tidied up Remus and Sirius returned home together. Just as he suspected, the place didn’t look that much worse than it had when they’d left.
“Home sweet home,” Sirius said as he collapsed onto the sofa. He held out his arms to Remus who climbed onto his lap and settled into his favourite position.
“Now I’m home,” Remus whispered.
“I wonder if our doubles all made it back safely,” Sirius said.
“I’m sure they did,” Remus replied. “And I hope Padfoot and Emberpelt are together now.”
Sirius nodded in agreement. “I guess we’ll never know for sure.”
“I like to think they were reunited,” Remus said. “Pity there’s no way to find out for certain.”
Suddenly a flash of light lit up the room with another patronus messenger, this one in the shape of a fox.
“Remus, Sirius, it’s Padfoot here. I don’t know whether you’ll get this, but I figured I’d give it a try. Just wanted you to know Dumbledore’s plan worked. Emberpelt made it home and we opened a portal for me to go through to join him there. James and Lily, that’s my James and Lily, weren’t exactly thrilled, but I promised them if things didn’t work out I’d go back to my own world. I don’t think I’ll be going back though. We’ve seen how happy you two are, and that’s what we want for ourselves. Thank you for everything.”
The patronus disappeared and Remus turned to Sirius. Sirius grinned back at him. “Look at us, spreading the love across dimensions. Aren’t we just fabulous?”
Remus laughed and pulled out his wand to send a message back to Padfoot. “Yeah, so fabulous we got ourselves kidnapped. What would you like me to tell them from you?”
“Something short,” Sirius said. “It’s been far too long since I’ve slept with my boyfriend in our own bed and I intend to remedy that right now.”
“Short it is,” Remus agreed before he sent their best wishes and congratulations through the patronus messenger. “What now?” he asked Sirius.
Sirius took his wand from him and placed it on the table alongside his own. “Now there will be no more portals, no more patronuses and no more magic tonight.”
“None at all?” Remus asked with a smirk.
Sirius grinned back at him. “Just the kind we make together.”
THE END
A/N: Thank you so much to those brave few who have come back to this story to see the ending after all this time.
Although I suspect they are no longer reading I would also like to give a shout out and credit to MinervaEvenstar and ze-marauderettes who gave me the two halves of Remus's double's nickname Emberpelt. It was much appreciated because I was really struggling to come up with anything. I'm just sorry you never got to see your credit because of the stupidly long amount of time it had taken to finish this story and series.
