The Final Piece
The Final Piece
Everyone was silent on the journey back over to the school. Harry was struggling to think of something to say to Hermione, but nothing he could come up with seemed the right thing to say to her. Once to the surface, Snape sent Bill as well as Shacklebolt over to the rooms. Ron left to go back home so he could be with his wife. It was Snape that spoke first, pulling Hermione into his arms as he did so.
“Why did you come?” Harry whispered.
“She needed to do this to put the past behind her,” Snape replied, kissing her head and murmuring to her that they would be back at the rooms soon. “Now you know most of it. But you still need the final piece of the puzzle as it were.” He pulled out a key and handed it over to Harry. “Go back to Dumbledore’s pensive, putting this key into the bowl first and it will give you the last information you need for your answers.” He scooped up Hermione off her feet. She was clutching him for dear life, as she sobbed quietly. “After you do that, then we’ll talk.”

If Harry had trepidations before, it was nothing compared to what he was feeling right at this moment. Dread had his skin slick with sweat as he stood next to the pensive. Remus he had been told about in the last few days wasn’t the man he had known growing up. They had tried to tell him. All his friends and family and warned him that Remus was more dangerous than Harry gave him credit for. And after seeing how his painting was behaving, he was beginning to believe it.
But what would the pensive hold now? What secrets did it have to tell him? And how was it ever so important for him to know? He would never know if he didn’t take that final step. Quietly, he lifted the key and slipped it into the swirling memories. Taking a deep, hopefully fortifying breath he went forth into the moment they had saved for last.
He fell into what looked to be a dungeon in time to see Remus beat Hermione. She was chained to the wall, her face so bruised it was hardly recognizable. Her skin was covered in blood and dirt. Harry nearly cried out in pain as Lupin continued to slam his fist into her face. His one eye was gleaming with madness as he kept up the torture. Finally he pulled back, lifting her head by her hair.
“Do you think he’ll want you now, bitch? You’re not so pretty any more,” he taunted. “Snape has always liked smart, pretty girls. You’re not so pretty anymore.”
She spat in his face and snarled, “Leave it to a worthless beta to only see the surface. Mates look beyond that, you ass.”
Wiping his face off slowly, he let out a growl and punched her in the jaw.
The door opened and Greyback entered the room, snapping, “We don’t have time to play with bitches. The attack is happening. You’re needed to pull down the wards over at Hogwarts.” Lupin hit her one last time and walked out of the room.
The very moment the door shut, she began yanking on her hands to pull them out of the restraints. Within moments they were out, next were her feet. She had scrapped her ankles raw in getting them off. She stood there shaking in agony. Her body wanting nothing more than to collapse, but she forced herself to focus. Her eyes popped open red as blood. She walked purposely down the corridor.
“Stop, bitch!” she heard from behind her.
Smiling coldly she attacked. One after another she took down, draining each of his or her blood and gaining strength with each kill. Hermione was soon running towards the stairs with a speed that even in a memory left Harry breathless. What would have taken others hours took Hermione but minutes. Soon she was running through the broken down gates of Hogwarts and straight into the heart of the battle.
She was a blur of movements, all with the one goal—getting to the Great Hall of the school. Before Harry knew it, Hermione was killing Greyback and had Remus at wand point.
“What are you doing here, bitch?” he asked, pulling his attention away from breaking the wards.
“You get one chance,” she told him, putting away her wand and pulling out a long slim bladed knife. “That’s it. Walk away or die.”
He didn’t walk away, but instead started to laugh. But just as suddenly he was attacking her physically. Remus let out a yelp and went so very still, looking straight into Hermione’s eyes with shock filling his features.
“Goodbye, Remus,” she breathed, and plunged the solid silver bladed knife all the way to his heart.
She dropped Remus onto the ground, turning to look towards the fighting. Hermione was shaking now, but still she pushed as she walked over to where Dumbledore’s picture was. Hermione fell to her knees in front of the large portrait, sobbing as she spoke to the head master.
“Miss Granger?” Albus asked. “What is it?”
“I had to kill Remus,” she cried. “I took joy in it! What kind of monster am I?”
The former headmaster sighed with sorrow, but said nothing.
