Chapter 14
The wind whipped Harry's hair into his face. The rain did its best to plaster his unruly locks against his skull and send rivulets of water into his eyes. The storm was making it hard to see anything, let alone the Snitch. Harry wiped his face again and squinted down toward the bleachers. Everyone was wearing a heavy overcoat against the rain and it was hard to pick one person out of the mix. With a sigh, he turned his attention back to the game. He wanted so badly to know if Snape had made it out to watch him. He shivered and scanned the field for the bloody Snitch and glanced over toward the Hufflepuff Seeker. She was hunkered down on her broom, trying to stay as warm as possible. It didn't look like she was even looking for the Snitch anymore. Harry didn't blame her, but he was determined to win this game, just in case Snape had made it out in the storm.
A flicker of gold caught Harry's eye. He watched it for a second, to make sure that he wasn't imagining things. The Hufflepuff Seeker was turned away from it and hadn't seen it yet. Harry tipped his broom in the right direction quietly. He managed to get a burst of speed before The Hufflepuff girl noticed he was chasing something. She let out a yelp and scrambled to pursue, but Harry had a good lead on her. As his fingers closed around the Snitch, the Hufflepuff Seeker blew past him. She nearly knocked him from his broom, but he was able to correct in time and maintain his hold on the Snitch. The stands erupted in cheers as Harry held the Snitch over his head, showing that he still had it.
Harry searched the stands again. His heart sank a little when he didn't seen the person he was looking for, but just as he began to turn away, one of the cloaked figures in the front row reached up and pulled off his hood. Black hair caught Harry's eye and he looked closer. A brilliant smile spread across his face and he let out an excited whoop. Snape had a proud smile and, it seemed, eyes only for him. Excited Gryffindors pressed in on Harry, thumping his back and congratulating him on a stunning catch. Harry smiled at everyone, but extricated himself from the crush as quickly as he could. Snape was watching him with an unidentifiable expression. Harry smiled at him hesitantly, but, as he went to take a step toward him, he saw Ron waiting. Harry let his smile to Snape turn apologetic and walked over to Ron.
“Hey. Nice catch,” Ron offered. Harry smiled.
“Thanks. You want to sneak out of here before they find me again?” he replied.
“You sure you want to leave all your adoring fans? Your boyfriend?” Ron asked, the hurt still evident in his voice. Harry winced. “I saw the look, Harry. I just can't believe you didn't tell me about it. Who is it?”
“Can we go inside? I'm not really ready to go public with this just yet, okay?” Harry asked urgently. Ron nodded and started toward the castle. With a relieved sigh, Harry started after him, only to find Snape standing in his path. “Oh, hey, Professor. Enjoy the match?”
“Yes, Potter, your attention to detail does not appear to be lacking on the pitch. Perhaps you just need to apply yourself more enthusiastically in your studies,” Snape suggested, but his voice lacked any of its usual venom. Harry smiled.
“I'll work on that, Professor. Excuse me, I was just heading inside. I'm soaked through,” he replied with a slight grin. Snape stepped back out of his path.
“Run along then, Potter. We can't have Gryffindor's star Seeker catching cold before the Slytherin match, can we?”
“No, Professor. It wouldn't be right to let Slytherin win just because I'm all laid up. I'll just go dry out then.” Harry smiled warmly and hurried to catch up with Ron, who was waiting impatiently in the doorway.
“What did he want? Did you miss a spot on one of those bloody cauldrons?” Ron asked, bitterly.
“No, he just wanted to wish me luck when we play Slytherin next weekend,” Harry said, unable to keep from defending Snape. Ron snorted.
“Right. More like he was thinking up ways to keep you in detention through the game. That's the only chance Malfoy has against you. That was a bloody amazing catch today. I really think Hufflepuff's Seeker was trying to knock you off your broom,” Ron said as they walked toward the common room. Harry chuckled.
“She was just mad that I saw it so much faster than she did. She was closer to it than I was!” Harry laughed. Ron joined him and, for a moment, it seemed that Ron had forgotten he was mad at his friend. When they got to the common room, it was empty. Ron walked over to the fireplace. “Hey, I'm gonna change out of these wet clothes. I'll be right back down, okay?”
Ron nodded absently and Harry hurried up to the dorm to change. He shuddered as he peeled off layer after layer of sodden cloth. It was bloody cold in the room, and his mark was throbbing a little. He grabbed a towel and rubbed his head down. He quickly toweled off and pulled on a pair of jeans and a loose t-shirt. He shivered again and added a sweater. Remembering that Ron was waiting for him down in the common room, he chose to skip socks and hurried back down the stairs.
“That was quick. So, we're gonna talk, huh?” Ron asked. Harry nodded.
“I never intended for her to find out. She just kind of came out and asked me. I didn't know what to say, so I just said that I was. And I am. I didn't want either of you to find out like this. I'm sorry,” Harry apologized, hoping that Ron would believe him. Thankfully, Ron nodded.
“Okay. So, Hermione says that you've got some kind of a boyfriend. Do I know him?” Ron asked. There was a slight tremble in his voice, like he wasn't sure if it was okay to talk about this. Harry smiled reassuringly.
“Yeah, we're not quite to the 'boyfriend' stage, but I really like him. You know him, but I'm not sure how ready he is to be outed. He's in Slytherin,” Harry admitted, not quite believing how brazen he was being. He was sure that Snape wouldn't find the fact that Harry was telling Ron about him, even if Harry was being careful to be vague. Ron's eyes bugged out.
“Are you kidding? You're... you're dating a Slytherin? Bloody hell, Harry. No wonder you're not ready to come out publicly. If anyone else heard about this, you'd never hear the end of it. Wait... is he in our Potions class?” he demanded. Harry couldn't help but laugh as he nodded.
“Yeah. He's in our Potions class. And no, I won't tell you who it is. I will say that I have a thing against platinum blonds.”
Ron barely hid a relieved sigh, drawing another laugh from Harry. Hermione came up behind them slowly. Ron saw her first. “Hey, Hermione. You were right. Harry has the hots for someone in our Potions class. Taking bets on who it is?”
“No. I'm fine, Ron. I think I'll just let it alone for now. Harry will tell us when he's ready, right Harry?” Hermione deferred. Harry nodded and smiled at her, letting her know that he wasn't mad for telling the little bit she had.
