The next morning Salazar walked downstairs to the dining room alone. Sleep had not come last night for the young man. Feeling the loss of Hermione hurt. He didn’t want to have breakfast with his family. He just wanted to be alone. He walked to the library and sat down, holding his head in his hands. The ring was in his pocket, and he pulled it out, looking at it. His mind drifted back fondly to when he had proposed to her. The joy in her eyes, the sense of peace and fulfillment he felt as they made love afterward. She was the first person he’d ever had a strong connection with, and now he had lost her. Her parents had come between them. He didn’t understand family dynamics, having only recently found his family, but he knew that his parents would never stand in his way. Would never force him to choose between them and Hermione. Salazar couldn’t help the anger he felt at Mr. and Mrs. Granger. He thought they liked him. He sighed and decided to give up trying to understand what had happened. He wished she had never left this castle, never returned to see her parents. Then she would be with him, and he wouldn’t feel so alone.
On his way to the dining room Harry saw the library door closed. He opened it to see Salazar staring at something small in his hand, “Salazar? Aren’t you coming to breakfast?” Salazar raised his head to see his brother. Harry could see in Salazar’s eyes that something was wrong, “Are you okay?”
Salazar shook his head, “Hermione dumped me.” Harry was confused. Just yesterday the couple couldn’t keep their hands off one another.
“Did you have a fight?”
“No,” Salazar looked on the verge of tears. Harry sat down next to his brother and hugged him, “I love her so much,” Salazar finally broke down and Harry held him as he did, trying to comfort him as best he could.
Salazar finally regained his composure and Harry ventured to ask, “What happened?”
“I don’t even know,” he shook his head, “she said her parents told her me or them.”
“And she chose them?!” Harry’s eyes widened, “But why? You’re perfect together!”
“I don’t know either,” he sighed. “I…maybe I should have fought harder for her…”
“You didn’t do anything wrong,” Harry said, “don’t blame yourself. She made her decision. You just have to move on.”
“I can’t though,” he said. “She was my world.”
A knock on the door had the boys looking up to see Voldemort and Lily standing at the entrance to the library, “Did breakfast move in here?”
“I’m not going,” Salazar said, picking up the ring from the ground where he’d dropped it.
“Hermione broke up with him,” Harry said, looking at his parents. Immediately you could see their faces change. Lily moved quickly to her son, pulling Salazar to her in a tight hug. Voldemort frowned, clearly angry.
“I’m so sorry,” Lily whispered to her eldest son, “oh Salazar. I’m so sorry,” she held him, trying to soothe him as best she could.
“I love her so much,” Salazar repeated. He really didn’t have anything else to say. Harry thought he might still be in shock.
Harry took a deep breath and walked over to his father. “I’m going to go talk with Hermione.”
“Don’t,” Voldemort said. Harry looked up at him in surprise, “let them figure this out for themselves,”
“Why?”
“Some things can’t be resolved by others. If Hermione dumped him, she’s not going to respond to his family trying to talk to her. If they are meant to be, then it will happen,” he and Harry left the room to let Lily comfort Salazar.
“I just don’t understand why she’d choose them over me,” Salazar said to his mother, his head on her chest as he let the tears flow.
“I wish I could tell you, but I don’t know what happened,” she held him against her.
“I’ve loved her for so long Mum,” he whispered, “and….and so much and she…she didn’t.”
“I don’t believe that,” she responded, “I think she loves you, Salazar. I think her family guides her decision, nothing else.”
“But I’m her family,” he looked up at her.
“Siblings, parents…they have more sway over our decisions than one might expect. Yes Hermione loves you, but she’s known her parents since she was born. They have power over her, whether they offer good guidance or poor advice.”
“How do I get her back?”
“You don’t,” she sighed, “It was her choice, and only she can fix what she has now broken.”
“But…”
“Just let go,” she said, hugging him tightly, “if it is meant to be, then it will happen.” Salazar just closed his eyes and relaxed into his mother’s embrace. She felt so comforting to him.
It took Salazar a week to pull himself together. But once he did everyone in the castle could see the difference. To keep his mind off of Hermione he would go to Diagon Alley and peruse the shops. He and Harry would toss a quaffle back and forth on broomsticks before dusk, or hit a bludger to and fro. He enjoyed his time with his family. Voldemort watched over him, trying to see how he was doing; how he was really doing.
Voldemort was determined to stay out of his son’s love life. He and Lily had agreed that if Salazar and Hermione were meant to be that it would happen. But that changed when he received a letter from her parents, informing him that Hermione would be bringing a date to the graduation party. He showed the letter to Lily, who was clearly upset by it. “To get over him so easily…”
“I know,” Voldemort sighed. “I thought she truly loved him.”
“So did I,” she nodded, snuggling close to him, “So what are we going to do?”
“I have a few ideas,” Voldemort gave a smirk that she’d seen before. He was up to something.
The next day Salazar was summoned to his father’s office, “Yeah Dad?”
“I have a question.”
“Yes?”
“You’ve been spending alot of time at Diagon Alley. Yet you never come home with any items. Why?”
Salazar swallowed, “I…I met a waitress at the ice cream shop there. I go to talk to her.”
“What’s her name?”
“Daciana,” he blushed, “I just get some ice cream and then she sits with me if she’s not busy. Then I order a soda and I sip slowly while we talk.”
Voldemort smiled, “Hermione is bringing a date to the graduation party. I wanted to tell you.”
Salazar bit his lip, “Already? I haven’t even asked Daciana out yet. We just talk.”
“I don’t know what to tell you. Your mother was surprised as well. I just wanted you to know.”
“Can I go? Her shift starts soon.”
“Go on,” he said, tossing a sack of coins at his son, “and take her out if you’re going to. Don’t hold out hope for Hermione. It appears she has moved on.”
Salazar just nodded, accepting the coins and leaving. Voldemort sighed and got up, he had his second meeting with the Minister of Magic today. They’d already called a truce.
Salazar sat down at his usual table, smiling at Daciana. His dad was right. He needed to just ask her out. But he’d never asked a girl out before, and Daciana was gorgeous. He knew she was the daughter of Florean Fortescue’s sister, who had married a man from Romania. Salazar watched her place two sundaes in front of a family with two small kids, who looked thrilled at the generous portion. Florean walked over to Salazar, “She’ll be with you shortly. She’s getting you something special.”
“I can wait,” he answered, “I’m in no rush.”
Daciana came over with a large sundae, “I’m taking a break. We just had a sudden rush and now we should be slow for awhile.”
“I get you all to myself? That’s perfect,” he grinned. Daciana smiled at him and sat down next to him, “I hope you have your own spoon.”
“Nope. We’ll have to share,” she smiled again.
Salazar blushed and Daciana took his hand, “I really like you.”
“I really like you too,” she smiled.
“I got dumped recently, so I’m not sure if I’m ready to…” She leaned forward and kissed him gently. Salazar closed his eyes; when the kiss ended they opened once more, “I forget what I was going to say.”
“Good,” she smiled, “I’m glad you’re available. I’ve had a crush on you since you started coming in here.”
Salazar scooped up some of the sundae, taking a bite, “Mint ice cream eh?”
“I know what you like by now,” she responded, taking the spoon from him and taking her own bite.
She had to get up and go back to work soon enough, but Salazar was patient. It was what Daciana liked about him. Salazar couldn’t get over that the beautiful woman wanted him too. After their lunch and after-lunch rush, she got an hour break. They went and bought some food, walking around Diagon Alley and talking. They held hands and enjoyed their time together, “Will you go out with me?” Salazar finally asked.
Daciana just smiled and hugged him, “Yes,” she whispered into his ear, “I thought you would never ask.”
They returned to the ice cream shop in time for her next shift. He got his typical soda, then waited for her to join him. She sat down and he finally asked, “Are you free tonight?”
Daciana nodded, “My shift is over at 5. I just need to run home and get changed and cleaned up.”
“You look good as is.”
“Maybe so, but I’d rather wear a sexy dress for you,” she gave him a sexy smile and Salazar swallowed. “And you could dress up a bit too.”
“We should go to France for dinner,” he said.
“I like that idea,” she nodded, “Muggle Paris?”
“That sounds perfect,” he grinned. “Where should I pick you up?”
“I’ll give you my apartment address,” she answered, taking out her pen and writing it down for him, “I look forward to our date.”
“Me too,” he leaned in and kissed her, softly. “I have to get back, my parents will want to know why I won’t be at dinner.”
Daciana nodded, “If you’re nervous about being hurt again…”
“I’m not,” he shook his head, “I can’t say I’m completely over her, but moving on is my only way to get over her.”
“True,” she stood, “I look forward to seeing you tonight.”
“Me too,” he stood as well, “thanks for the sundae and the soda,” he took out his coin pouch and paid for them, “I’ll see you soon then.” He exited the ice cream parlor and headed back to the apparition point.
