Chapter Thirteen
Murder for freedom the stab in the back
Woman and children, a cowards attack
Run to the hills - run for your lives
Run to the hills - run for your lives
James stared at the Horcrux’s as they lay seemingly innocently on the cold stone floor, he lifted the fang above the Diadem and licked his lips, he could taste salt from his sweat. Harry and Remus watched while Sirius leaned against a pillar with both hands in his hair, still recovering from the shock of being forced to face his terrors. Finally James took a sharp breath and sent the fang straight through the silver diadem, it screamed and billowed black smoke before shattering into thousands of pieces. They all blinked and stared down at the wreckage, the tiara was now little more than twisted, smoking metal. “Well…that was easy.” James said shakily. “Why did the ring attack Sirius but the Diadem didn’t even bother with me…?”
“Because I have more darkness in my heart than you Jamie.” Sirius whispered from the shadows, “It couldn’t find anything to use against you, so it probably didn’t see the point in fighting.”
“I see…” James ran a hand through his hair and sighed. “Well, it misread me.” He stood and stretched with a sigh. “Guess it’s Remus’ turn then…”
Remus paled and backed away. “No.” He said quietly and turned his back.
“What?! Why not?” James stared at his friend with wide eyes, the fang held loosely in one hand. “Sirius did it and he’s got a lot of baggage, probably more than you…”
Remus let out a soft chuckle. “I can’t do it Jamie.”
“It’s fine…” Harry took the fang from James’ hand and turned to the locket, he smiled slightly. “This one really messed my friend Ron up…” He stared at the serpent engraved upon the locket and took a breath, “Open.” He hissed in the tongue of snakes and the locket sprang open to reveal a red eye in each panel where there should have been pictures. Harry lifted the fang high above his head in both hands just as black smoke billowed from it and obliterated the world around him, the hissing got louder and Harry could hear it calling to him, the voice familiar and friendly. He smiled grimly and sent the fang plunging downward, it pierced the eye and the locket gave an ear splitting screech. His arms shuddered and he was thrown backwards, he hit something heavy with a soft grunt and came to a halt. He sat still panting slightly and he could smell burning hair.
“You alright, Harry?” Sirius’ rough voice rumbled through his chest and into Harry’s back as a pair of arms tightened briefly around him, he could feel a little blood running down his face and his head was pounding.
“Y-Yeah…I think…think so…” He gasped. He lifted his hand and touched his forehead, when he brought it away there was blood staining his finger tips. “Something must have hit me.” Sirius turned him around and grabbed his face with one rough hand, he pushed Harry’s fringe from his face and inspected his forehead.
“Your scars bleeding.”
“You what?!” Harry frowned and he winced as Sirius’ fingers found the old wound.
“Yeah, its split open. What happened? We couldn’t see you in that cloud of black smoke…”
“Nothing really happened, it just hissed at me a bit and screamed.” Harry wiped the blood from his forehead on his sleeve, a frown of worry creased his brows as he stood up shakily. After a quick, silent inventory of his extremities he decided that he was bruised but not seriously injured. “Right, let’s get out of here before we’re discovered.” He brushed himself down and watched as the others gathered around him.
The bathroom was empty and silent as they exited the tunnel, it closed with a low rumble that set Harry’s teeth on edge. Before he could take another step forward James grabbed his shoulder and held him back. “Here, take my cloak and keep your hood up at all times.” He whispered furtively. “They already know who I am but as yet the Death Eaters have no idea you even exist…let’s keep it that way for as long as we can.” He held up his cloak and Harry saw the sense in what he said, he took it from his father’s hand and swung it about his shoulders before drawing the hood low over his face. Once done James gave a firm nod, his face was hard as his fingers tightened convulsively on his wand. “Harry, let’s take a look at the map.”
Harry lay the map on the ground and spread it open, the others crowded around him. Their corridor was empty of everything, even ghosts. “All the secret passages will probably have been found and are being watched.” He muttered, knowing that Voldemort would hardly overlook such a detail.
“We can use the shrieking shack.” Remus whispered, his finger pointing towards the Whomping Willow. “Once we get past the waving branches they will protect our backs if we’re pursued. Only we and the old teachers knew of the way to stop the tree.”
“Then that’s what we’ll do…getting there’s going to be risky though.” Sirius replied in a voice of false lightness, his eyes glittered oddly in the multiple Lumos’ that had been conjured and his face had a slightly mad grin on it that made Harry shiver.
“We’ll have to watch our backs.” Remus agreed in a tight voice.
“And when we reach the grounds we can’t afford to let our guards down, they’ve got more Dementors here than they ever had at Azkaban.” James finished as he took up the map and stowed it in a pocket inside his robes, he looked at each of his friends in turn before finally looking at Harry. “Let’s do this.”
The four of them moved as quietly as possible out into the corridor, James looked left and Remus right, Sirius held his wand tightly in his fist as he too checked that the coast was clear. Once they had reassured themselves that everything was as quiet as it should be they began to move off, James lead the way holding the map and checking it regularly while Remus brought up the rear. Harry could feel the tension in his chest, like a giant fist was clutching his insides. He had never missed this feeling, the certainty that at every turn they would encounter something that would attempt to kill them. He licked his dry lips and slowly let out a breath, he could feel cold sweat drying beneath his clothes and tried not to think about it. Their foot falls seemed unbearably loud in the silent corridors as they slowly made their way down to the entrance hall. Hogwarts was little changed, Harry knew that Voldemort wouldn’t want the ancient castle changed dramatically as he had liked the place as much as any creature who had a shattered soul could like anything.
Suddenly James halted, almost making Sirius walk into him. He frowned down at the map for a long time before turning and pressing a finger to his lips. Sirius nodded knowingly and pointed his want at his feet, there was a tiny ripple in the atmosphere as both James and Remus followed suit. Harry frowned in confusion before Sirius turned and leaned very close, in a voice that could barely be heard even in such close proximity, he whispered; “Use the silencio spell on your feet so they don’t make any noise.” Harry’s eyes widened in understanding behind the folds of the cloak, he did as instructed. They moved on in utter silence except for the sound of their breathing, to Harry they sounded like a long line of Steam engines and he cringed inwardly.
Finally, after navigating unbearably silent corridors and stairways, they found themselves at the top of the main stair case. Harry’s breathe caught in his throat, the doors had been thrown wide open to reveal a grounds covered in thick silvery mist. “Dementors.” He hissed and felt Remus squeeze his elbow in reassurance.
“How do we get round those guys, James?” Sirius muttered, his voice seemed horribly loud in the hall.
James was silent for a long time before turning and crumpling the Marauder’s map in his fist, he straightened his shoulders and gazed at them through glittering eyes. “We run.” He said and Sirius grinned manically.
“There’s the James I know and love.” He said, stowing away his wand in the safety of his robes. “Let’s do this.”
They moved down the stairs, treading carefully as ice had formed on them and made them dangerous to the unwary foot. Slowly they reached the bottom, Harry doffed the cloak as it would only hinder him. He swallowed the hard lump of glassy fear as it threatened to turn into outright terror, reluctantly he too put away his wand. He had no wish to lose it. They stood for a brief moment, gazing out across the grounds of Hogwarts with wide, unbelieving eyes. The sky was almost utterly black with what Harry at first had taken to be dark clouds but, as he looked closer he realised were Dementors. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of them. “Oh…oh Merlin…” He whispered, eyes huge as he stared at the horror before him.
“I-I’ve never seen so many…” Remus hissed.
James and Sirius looked at each other. “We could turn into our animal forms but that would leave you and Harry vulnerable.”
Remus nodded. “Ordinarily I would say to leave me behind but…we need Harry.”
Harry grimaced. “I can produce a Patronus but I have never attempted one against so many.”
“No…Neither have I.” Sirius whispered, he lifted a shaking hand to his forehead and wiped away the cold sweat that was gathering there. “What do we do, Jamie?” His voice shook and his eyes danced with what Harry could only describe as utter terror.
James pulled a face that spoke of his distaste of what he was about to say. “Same as before…we run like hell and don’t look back.”
“Why can’t we use the same way we came in?” Harry suggested.
“Because there’s a possibility it will be discovered and I won’t risk it.” James replied, he ruffled up the back of his hair absently before taking a deep, shuddering breath. “Right, on three…”
Sirius closed his eyes as if in prayer. “One.” He muttered.
“Two.” Remus said and stepped forward a pace.
Harry’s hands were sweating, his body flushing hot and cold as he prepared his muscles to make a break for it. “Three.” He gasped and together they broke into a run.
