Chapter 14
“I think Filius has something here,” Remus said, tone hopeful. They had just received an owl from Albus about the issue with Harry. Though it had improved, such as Harry was now talking again, the submissiveness wasn't abating much. Nothing they did was managing to help either. Saying things like wanting the Harry they knew back didn't work, something they didn't understand. Though Sirius was reluctant to let others get involved, he had agreed when Harry started spending more time as Little Paws than he did as his normal self. Little Paws was helping and letting him interact more as the emotions and such weren't as complex as those of his human self. However, they wanted their Harry back.
Holding Little Paws close and stroking his ears, Sirius leaned over and looked at the parchment. “What does he say?” Filius—he thought, maybe, he could handle him helping. After all, the diminutive man wasn't a threat and had been someone in school all of them trusted. His interest in such matters had more to do with the academic end of the spells than helping something like the Order. That seemed to ease Sirius' mind.
Pulling out the second parchment that came with the letter and looking at the spell there, Remus told him, tone distracted, “He says that we need something like a bridge spell to tie everything we did together. It's not going to totally fix the problem, but it should make it easier for all the spells and the bond to work together. From what he says, he thinks the issue is that the spells and bond are conflicting somewhat, as the spells we used, the ones that aren't sure what they are doing yet as we didn't set the parameters on them, are warring with the bond itself. This should make it easier for them to do what they need to do.” Looking at Sirius, he nodded, “That might be the problem we're having with what we're saying as it's not working. Everything is fighting against each other thus canceling out what we want done.”
“It could be,” Sirius said with a thoughtful nod. “We knew there would be problems with that kind of thing. It's worth a shot anyway as we're not making much progress.”
“We'll see if it works,” Remus told him firmly, looking at the spell again.
“Anything else there?” Sirius asked because it appeared it was a longish letter.
“Yes,” Remus said focusing back on the letter itself rather than the spell. “He says he thinks we need to play towards something that satisfies the bond, such as a submissive behavior, while working with what we want. From what he says, that it will satisfy the bond and what it wants, while it works with the spells.” Looking at Sirius, he added, “Filius says that what might work better is something sexual in a way. Not necessarily overtly, as in the act itself, but something that plays to that, then explain what you want.”
Taking that in, Sirius thought it over, trying to dissect what it meant, then nodded. “We'll come up with something. Somehow. Let me think on it.”
“He knows what he's doing, so I'm sure it'll work,” Remus told him, optimistic that they had something to start dealing with the problem. “He said don't expect instantaneous results, but it should progress quickly when we find the right way to go about it.” Pressing on, he imparted, brow furrowed, “He also said that though we may not like this, it's best to handle it now rather than wait for the worst to hit after we start going back out in public. That could end up almost nightmarish as this reaction could lead to us having to completely defend Harry while giving 'orders'.” Nodding, he added, “He's right there, Sirius. It might not be nice, but it's better now than later.”
“Very true,” Sirius nodded. “We'll work with it and manage something. It might just take time.”
“At least we have a base to start,” Remus said, tone hopeful. “That's more than what we had. Albus also sent along the names of some calming draughts that may work better. He said this isn't the way to keep handling it, but it may help if we run across a situation like we did the other day. That I think we may need as well. It can only help if it gets really bad.”
“We'll do that too,” Sirius sighed, though he didn't like it. The realism was that they needed something. When an episode like that set Harry off, it did him as well, thus making it to where he couldn't think as logically as he needed to. So, calming down was necessary. Remus did fine and was clearer than either of the two of them, but it couldn't hurt.
“I'll go out today and order these. We can get them delivered like we do the Wolfsbane. That way we always have something on hand. Just in case.”
“Alright, we'll go about it that way,” Sirius conceded.
“There is no quick fix for this, Sirius,” Remus told him gently. “None of us like it, especially Harry, from what I can guess. It's just going to take time and effort to get it to where we want it. We knew that when we tried it. Think of it this way, it's better than the alternative.”
“There is that,” Sirius admitted, holding Little Paws close and stroking his ears. “I think realistically, I knew this was coming, but facing and dealing with it is worse.”
“Very true,” Remus sighed. “We all prepared the best we could, that's all we could do. All we can do now is just work with what we have here and press on to get it to where Harry is once again what he used to be.” Reaching out, he petted Little Paws and smiled as the dog looked at him. “We'll fix it, Harry, don't worry.”
“We will,” Sirius agreed firmly, giving the dog a squeeze. “I don't care what it takes, we will.”
Looking back at the parchment, Remus said, tone distracted as he kept reading, “Albus says one of the potions needs taken all the time, that it should help keep the anxiety levels down in Harry, thus enabling whatever we do to work better.”
“Not liking that at all,” Sirius told him, brow furrowed. “How sure is he that it can help?”
“He said the more relaxed Harry is, the better what we do can work as it'll help his natural instincts to go with what we want. From what he says here, we're not talking a mindless person that's been drugged to the eyeballs, just someone that can use it to aid what we're doing as it'll help keep him from being overly stressed. The suggestion came from Poppy, actually.” Shaking his head, he looked at Sirius and imparted, “I think we need to try. If it can help that way, it might not make this as horrid to deal with.”
Looking down at Little Paws, who was gazing up at him, Sirius felt his gut curdle at the thought of drugging Harry to deal with this nightmare. He hated the mere thought of it, actually. Sighing, he shut his eyes. What he wanted was Harry's input to see how he felt about it. However, with how this was going, the only answer he would get from Harry was whatever they wanted to do. There was nothing they knew that could manage to get what Harry truly wanted out of him at this juncture of the 'fun'. He was too caught up in what was going on to be able to voice his true opinion. That didn't help. Shaking his head, holding Little Paws close, he just nodded. They would try it anyway. If he didn't like the results, they would discontinue the potion. With that, he vowed to come up with something, somewhere, to move this along as quickly as he could because he was to the point of not being able to stand much more. No, he would work on it and come up with something. He just had to keep it simple, nothing more.
“We'll manage, Sirius,” Remus told him softly, his own gut curdling at what they were discussing. He didn't like it any more than Sirius did, but there just wasn't a lot of choice in the matter if they wanted their Harry back.
“Yeah, we will,” Sirius agreed with a sigh.
Changing topics, he then began to go over the bit with Draco that was included in Albus’ letter. It wasn't much, just Albus' assurances that Severus was going to do all he could to back the teen off. It was his hope that changing topics would help Sirius to calm down slightly, thus being able to think better, something they both needed.
When Remus finished and said something about going out to get the potions, Sirius sighed, “Yeah, the quicker we start this, the better we're going to be. Just be damned careful. We need no help in making this worse than what it already is.”
“I will,” Remus assured him softly. “I'm going in a glamour and this Apothecary isn't among our kind. I'll make sure I employ extra precautions as well.”
“Hurry back,” Sirius told him with a sigh. So far, Remus hadn't ventured out for more than fifteen minutes at a time. That alone caused anxiety. He was sure, with what was going on, that this was going to end up worse. With all he was dealing with, he didn’t need that.
Leaning over and kissing Sirius then Little Paws on top of his head, Remus said, “While I'm gone, see what you can do with that spell and the other bits in the letter. Getting that spell on quickly can only help.”
As that would give him something to focus on, Sirius gave a firm nod. “I'll handle it. Don't worry. Just—hurry back.”
“I will,” Remus said, standing. Grabbing the letter, he left, planning on being gone only as long as he had to.
Petting Little Paws, Sirius looked at the door Remus had left through and sighed. Already he was anxious about this. That he didn't like but would deal with it. Shaking his head, he looked down at the small dog and said, “Come on. Let's see what we can manage with this spell.” Hearing a soft bark, he stood then carried Little Paws upstairs.
Fingering the collar around Harry's neck as he sat in his lap, Sirius sighed internally. The spell was on and he was sure that he got it right. Now they just had to wait to see how well it worked and how it would 'play' with the other spells. That would take time, nothing more. They had plenty of that, of course, but he wanted this to go as quickly as they could manage. Because this—he hated it. He wanted their Harry back, now. It was just something they couldn't manage yet.
Holding Harry close, his godson's head tucked under his chin, Sirius began to stroke his back after letting loose of the collar. “We'll fix it, Harry, it'll just take time.” He said quietly, hoping that the spell was already working, “We want our Harry back. We want you just how you used to be and to be yourself. You don't have to be this way and it's not how we want you.” He figured that was enough as he didn't want to overly stress Harry by pushing him into something that he wasn't ready for yet. Holding Harry close, his head dropped back. He had to come up with something like had been suggested, he just didn't have any idea what it might be was all.
Shaking his head, he kissed Harry on top of the head. “We love you, Harry, just how you are. And don't want to change you for the world,” he said, quietly. “You're our Harry. All we want is for you to be happy and comfortable with this. Well, as much as you can get. Just give it time and we'll get you there. It just means we have some bits to figure out, nothing more. Then it'll all go back to the way it was.” Once again, his mind circled back to what he had to come up with. The mere thought of doing anything remotely sexual with Harry in this state was appalling to him. The fact that Harry would do something not because he wanted to, but because the bond was forcing it on him disgusted him and he just couldn't. There was no chance. He knew Remus was the same way. Neither of them would go there until Harry could actually really consent. Not just saying he would or doing it because the bond forced it on him. No fucking way in hell.
“I hate this,” he told his godson, softly. “I hate that we were put in this position. I hate that you're being forced to endure this. I hate that we can't quickly fix it quickly. All of it. Though I don't hate the relationship. I adore that, actually. It wasn't what any of us wanted, but I adore it. You're with us and we love that. We'll all be together and adore it. Nothing can change that.” Gently, he added again, “You're our Harry and we love you.”
Giving Sirius a soft squeeze to let him know he heard and understood, Harry was left shaking from that. He managed, though, something extremely hard. Because he wanted Sirius to know he heard him and appreciated it. The war going on inside him was hard to battle and left him in mental agony. And he didn't know what to do. Part of him needed to follow what was said and another part needed to remain submissive then yet another piece was howling in mental agony at feeling like he was being pulled in separate directions. It wasn't fun, but he had no way to fix it. Honestly? Most times he wanted to stay as Little Paws. That made it so much easier on him. He could do so much more as the dog and didn't have to worry about the war he was dealing with, well, mostly. There were bits he did. However, he trusted Sirius and Remus, so he believed that they would find a way. It would just take time before he could act like he used to. Then they could press on. That he looked forward to.
Running his fingers through Harry's hair, Sirius told him, “We'll do everything we can. I swear we will, and we'll find something. Let's see if this potion helps. If it doesn't, we'll stop it. Just give us time, Harry. We'll make this up to you when we get it fixed.” And they would. He vowed that to himself. No, he wasn't going to let his godson go through what had to be a form of torture without making it up to him. They would find a way. He didn't know how yet, but they would. Shutting his eyes, he leaned his head against Harry's and just held him. He hoped that Harry understood how much he hated seeing him like this, but wouldn't beat himself up over it because of that damned bond. If that happened, it wouldn't help anything at all. With that, he prayed that what Filius and Albus came up with worked because he wasn't sure how much more of this he could take. He needed his Harry back so they could have fun again and press on.
“Have you come up with anything from your mother to give us a hint?” Albus asked Tonks. They were sitting in his office at Hogwarts as he was busy with so much.
“Some,” Tonks told him with a nod. “It's enough to at least get you going and give you somewhere to look.”
Intrigued, Albus leaned forward, hands clasped on his desk, he asked, “What do you have for me?”
“Mum said she wasn't sure about bits, but thought, maybe, Aunt Cissy is worried about really irritating Sirius. As I said, he's head of the House of Black. As such, there are plenty of rules all people directly related to it have to abide by. Aunt Cissy, though married to Uncle Lucius, is still bound by some of those and Sirius, if irritated enough, can do something. We think that might be what's causing this. Mum said that if Draco keeps it up, Sirius can step in and do something punitive to Aunt Cissy for not stopping it. She did say she's not sure exactly what he can do, but she's certain there’s plenty. Especially since her sister seems worried about it.”
“Any ideas of what he can do?” Albus asked, curious. If Sirius could do something and take the Malfoys out of Tom's hands in some way or force them to turn their back, it could only help. He knew Lucius, and his father before him, funded plenty. Bella did as well. Almost as an afterthought, he asked, “Could he do the same to Bella?”
“From what Mum said, he can,” Tonks nodded, her bright pink hair bouncing slightly as she did. “And Mum isn't sure exactly what he can do. She said she thinks that he can revoke permissions when it comes to the marriages. I'm sure you know those had to be approved before they could happen. That's about the same with any high-powered merging of the big Pureblood families. She was disinherited because she refused to go that route. I'm actually considered a bastard child because of that. It doesn't matter, obviously, as the marriage is legal, but that's what happened. I'll never be 'officially' recognized by the House of Black unless Sirius does something. She told me that she thinks, though she isn't sure, that if he does that, Draco will be considered a bastard child as well. Again, she's not sure on that. From what she said, if that happens, Draco can't inherit the entire Malfoy estate or be considered the rightful heir because of his status. There's also something about vaults, dowries and all kinds of junk to do with the money. Honestly? She just doesn't know about those parts. That was something taught to the men, mostly. From what she said, she learned a bit, but not enough to be a big help.”
“Interesting, very interesting,” Albus said, stroking his beard as he thought it over. If Sirius could wield power over some of this, he could take factions out of the war. That wouldn’t fix all of it, that he knew, but could change the outcome to a degree. At this juncture, they needed that, desperately. Anything to give them a slight upper hand would be most welcome.
“She also told me if Aunt Cissy is really worried, that Sirius can probably do something huge. And as angry as Sirius has to be about some of this mess, she said she thinks he might do it too. Draco can't be helping. If that bond is as strong as you say, he would do it to protect Harry from the threat. It might be something to consider, Albus. I know it's nasty, but we've been left with so few choices in this mess that we might want to look into it.” Tonks told him softly. “And it's perfectly legal from what Mum told me. It's written into the marriage contracts. If Aunt Cissy ignores it, she'll end up forfeiting a lot. That's done magically, not by Sirius forcing her. If Mum knew about it, you know Aunt Cissy has to as she follows so many of those stupid Pureblood bits.”
“Very true,” Albus told her with a firm nod. “Yes, this might be something we should look into to see just what Sirius can do. I would normally just ask him as I'm sure he'd give it up. This is a case where I won't do that. Let me see what a bit of research can unearth. Cuthbert might not be able to research for me as he's a ghost, but I'm sure he can point me in the right direction to where I can find the information I need. As long as I get a lead, I can probably find plenty.”
“Mum told me she would do some digging on her end. She still has some books in her vault, from what she told me. Though she has to be covert about it as she doesn't want to alert anyone she's digging into it, she's going to try to get her hands on them then pass them to you. They should help,” Tonks said. “From there, she's going to try to remember where you might be able to find something.”
“Any bits help,” Albus said truthfully. “Let's see what we can manage. We can't do much with Sirius yet, as the problems there are just immense, but once he's doing better, we might be able to persuade him to give us a hand. I know the three of them want to stay out of the war and their reason for that is a good one, but this may be a way they can help us.”
“There are others from the Pureblood lines that might know as well. Each house has a different set of rules, of course, but a lot of them do the same junk. Arthur and Molly might know or at least a place to start looking. Maybe even someone you can talk to. That aunt of theirs might know plenty,” Tonks offered up helpfully.
“Another very good suggestion as well,” Albus said, pleased with this. “Yes, we'll look into that end and see what might be helpful to us.”
“Mum did say to pass along that if Aunt Cissy is that worried, whatever it is that Sirius can do is huge. Because Aunt Cissy just doesn't worry about such things. Which means it can probably help us.”
“Oh yes,” Albus said thoughtfully, brow furrowed. “I'll get with your mother to see what else she might know then start looking myself. I believe I have several people I can go to that will be a big help. If they can't tell me, they may know who I can talk to that will know. There are plenty of the older generations around that know more of these bits than we do. After all, so much of this fell by the wayside so many years ago. Only a select few still follow some of the traditions. Yes, this is good and I do believe it's a lead we will find most useful. Thank you,” he told her with a smile and nod.
“Anything to help,” Tonks told him honestly.
After the Auror left his office, Albus leaned back in his chair and thought over the information that he had been given. He wasn't sure how much help it would be for them, at least right now, but his gut was telling him it was something they could use. Which meant he needed all the information on the topic he could get. After that, if it panned out and looked like it was something they could use, to get with Sirius to see if he was amiable to doing it. That might end up the tricky part. Then again, with how Sirius was and what was happening, it might not be that hard. Either way, this was good.
Standing, he headed towards the teacher's office adjacent to the History of Magic class. Cuthbert was always in there when he wasn't teaching. The ghost might be obsessed with the troll/goblin wars, but he knew plenty on other topics as well. Once done there, he thought, maybe, a trip to Godric's Hollow was in order. Bathilda, though having issues with mental areas, would probably know enough to give him a hand as well. That was if he could get her to talk to him. That would be the tricky part.
