Chapter 14
Adding more names to the grid he was working with then a few tasks he thought they were best suited for after them, Sirius groaned loudly. This was bloody boring, no matter how he looked at it. While it was something they needed, that didn't make it less mind-numbing to work on. It was a task Albus had them doing. They were making up a list of protections that needed put up for various people and adding the names of those who they thought should attend to it. As there was a ton to take care of, it was taking forever. There were just a mass of papers to go through, add to the sheet then try to figure out who in Merlin's name they would get to attend to what. It had looked so overwhelming when it came in that he and Remus had tried to enlist PJ to help. His godson had taken one look at it, shook his head, muttered something about not ever wanting to do a spreadsheet again as long as he lived then made it clear he had plans for the day. That gave them both a chuckle, of course, but he could understand the impulse.
Finishing the latest paper, what was listed on there for the Burrow, Sirius tossed it aside then picked up his beer and took a sip. This was bad. Sighing, he looked at the seemingly huge pile still to go through. This was going to take for-bloody-ever to manage unless they could come up with a shortcut of some kind. That he wasn't counting on either as they couldn't think of a damned thing that would help them out. Picking up his mobile, he looked to not only check the time, but to see if PJ had sent a text message thing yet. His godson was supposed to do that when he finished what he was tending to. As he hadn't heard the tone for that yet, he was checking.“He's fine, Sirius,” Remus told him gently, tossing aside the paper he just finished with. “He just had some bits to tend to on the continent, somewhere safer than here, honestly, then he was going to Hogsmeade for chocolate. Nothing more. If there was a problem, he'd let you know. And, with what we know of him, he can do a good job of taking care of himself.”“I know,” Sirius sighed. “It's just the idea, nothing more. The attack on the house in Godric's Hollow a couple of days ago has me wary.” A group of Death Eaters had taken after the house James and Lily died in, burning it to the ground and leaving the Dark Mark above it late at night. It wouldn't accomplish anything, everyone knew that, but they were sure that it was retaliation of some kind for that article in the paper. There had also been more Death Eater activity around as well, something that had them all on edge over it. As they had mentioned when the article hit, they were all sure this was the first steps in You-Know-Who going completely mental.Picking up the paper that carried the latest interview with PJ, Sirius couldn't help but grin as he read it again. Of course, he had read it a few times since it came out the day before, but it still amused him. It appeared that PJ's publishers were dead on the galleon about catering to women in some of this as the reporter, an Emily Broadhurst, had all but gushed about PJ, mentioning multiple times how he looked, the color or his eyes, his smile, how handsome he was, all of it. His book seemed to have taken a backseat to his looks, in fact. PJ had just groaned about that, shaking his head when they ribbed him over it. It was hilarious. He said that morning, when T got the paper and called, that she had done the same thing. While it was funny, it probably helped as his publisher had called, telling him that Flourish and Blotts had put out feelers to them about the book signing. Good! As long as it helped his godson sell books and gave him the publicity, he was all for it.Tossing the paper down, he told Remus, “We need to get with Alastor about the book signing. If the store is putting out feelers to him, it's coming. With what's going on, he needs the time to set up something.”“We'll do that next time we see him,” Remus told him after taking a sip of his tea. “That and we need to start lining up volunteers for it. I'm not sure how much notice we'll have, so it's best to get as much in place as we can.”Sirius was about to say something about getting in contact with him and having him stop over when PJ was around so they could go over the whole thing, when his mobile rang. Looking down at it, brow furrowed, he wasn't sure what to make of that. PJ said he would text before heading home, but he was calling. Wondering what was going on, he answered, asking, “Is something wrong?” He almost didn't get that fully out of his mouth when his eyes widened. Standing, knocking the bench over as he did it so quickly, he said, “Stay right where you are and hidden the best you can. I'm on my way. I'll have Remus get in touch with Albus and rally the troops then alert Tonks and Kingsley. Just don't do anything stupid and keep your head down!” Hearing his godson reply, he ended the call then told the concerned looking Remus, “Hogsmeade is under full attack by Death Eaters. They are going after everyone from what PJ said. Get help, now! I'm on my way there.” Before Remus could do more than sputter, he was making a run for the front door, planning to get there as fast as he could. He knew just where PJ was holed up and would get him the hell out of the mess, hoping it didn't grow any worse before he could get there.Eyes wide, stammering, Remus stood then took off for the Floo. Though Albus needed to know quickly, he planned to get in touch with Tonks and Kingsley first so the DMLE and Aurors could get there. Once he got in touch with Albus, he planned to head there himself to help. With Sirius in full protection mode, it was best he back up his old friend because if anyone took after PJ, Sirius would go completely mental and put himself in danger. That they didn't need.
Landing not far from the Hog's Head, Sirius took off in that direction, as that's where PJ said he was. Getting there quickly, despite the people running in his direction trying to get out of town, he found PJ and Aberforth trying to get people into the pub so they could get to the Floo.
Quickly going to his godson's side, he began to help all he could. As the noise was horrific, not only from screaming and panic, but minor explosions as, apparently, the Death Eaters took after the shops there, he shouted above it, “Remus is getting Albus and contacting the DMLE. We should have help shortly.” Then the whole town was rocked by a major explosion, a Dark Mark appearing above a building closer to the center of town. “Fuck,” he muttered, looking that way, clutching his wand tightly.“And that would be the Three Broomsticks,” PJ told him, all but shoving a hysterical mother and her two small children into the pub as he looked in the direction of the Dark Mark. “That's where they were focusing when I came out of Honeydukes. As it's about the lunch hour, it was full.” Shaking his head, he said, tone hushed, “There was nothing I could do to help. I think every Death Eater out there is in town and attacking. All I managed was getting people herded this way as there was mass panic.”“Which means they are headed this way. It's like a damned swarm of locusts, Sirius. They are just burning everything to the ground as they move, not caring who is in it,” Aberforth told him as he ushered more people into his pub. “Whatever help Remus is getting better show, fast, or there isn't going to be a town left when they're done.”Stepping in front of Aberforth and PJ, he said, “You two keep getting them in there and I'll keep watch.” Though he wanted to go do what he could to help, he knew better. First, there was the fact that he was alone. If it was a small number of the evil arseholes, he might try, but not with the amount they said. Second, PJ was here. That's where he was focused. Once his godson was out, he would do what he could. He just wasn't going it alone was all. Aberforth could help, something he knew the man would do. Though it was only the two of them, they would at least hold plenty off until help arrived.Flinching and ducking his head as another building blew up, debris from it raining down around them, PJ shook his head, “This is bad.”“Get them moving faster,” Sirius snarled. As there were only a few left to get into the pub, he wanted them out of there, fast. Almost before that left his mouth fully, he had to duck and shield. Hearing a familiar cackle from his deranged cousin, he muttered, “Fuck!” This was not good at all. Conjuring the best shield he could, making sure it was big enough to protect those behind him, he then began firing off spells as fast as he could. Though there were only a few there, they were the powerful ones. These he couldn't take on all by himself. “Come on, Remus,” he muttered, firing off everything he could think of, relieved when Aberforth joined him. All he was hoping was to hold them off until help arrived.Keeping half an eye on Sirius and Aberforth as he helped the last few into the pub, PJ's eyes then widened as more Death Eaters, all firing off spells, joined the others. Very not good there. As it didn't look like any help was there yet, he felt he needed to step in. Spells now flying wildly, he slammed the door shut to the pub after the last were in, shouting at them to get to the Floo as fast as they could, he then drew his wand and cast his Patronus. Guiding it to where it was standing over the three of them, he then sent off the spell called Fire Shield. It basically surrounded his Patronus, and anyone being protected by it, with a blue fire that deflected almost all spells or negated them. It wouldn't work for the Unforgivables or similar very dark ones, but it would ward off the lower grade spells most used. Hurrying over and joining the two men, he began to fire off his own spells, most to deflect and keep everyone off balance until help could get there.Still casting as fast as he could, Sirius glanced up at the gigantic glowing dog perched over the three of them. Unable to help himself, he grinned. PJ was right when he told them it was bigger outside, that's for damned sure! The thing was just massive, bigger than some dragons, as he was told. Not only that, it was snarling and you could hear it, glowing drool dripping down from its bared fangs. Whatever that hazy blue mist-like substance that looked like flames which now surrounded them was, it was blocking almost everything fired their way. That was damned good! “You're teaching me that spell when we get out of this mess,” Sirius chuckled, still firing off more spells.“I doubt I can, but I'll try,” PJ told him, stepping up by his godfather, firing off his own spells. Ducking one that got through the shield, he then pointed his wand at the massive inuyoukai Patronus and cast the Ice Deflector. It would bounce a few of the spells back in a random pattern as they hit the ice mist that would surround the other shield. It would help keep the other idiots off guard, or so he hoped. Looking at the black-haired woman, one that was cackling almost manically, he asked as she started some strange arsed baby-talk, “Who is the deranged one? And she is just a nasty piece of work, isn't she?”“My cousin Bellatrix,” Sirius sighed. “You have no idea. She's batshite insane and just deadly. Watch out for her.”“Lovely family there, Sirius,” PJ sighed ducking another spell that got through both shields.“I know,” Sirius sighed, ducking a spell himself. Though the Patronus was helping plenty, the ones firing the spells had no problem casting Unforgivables and other plenty dark ones that were the things nightmares were made of. That's exactly what they were doing, too. “Come on someone! We need help!” He snarled, firing off everything he could think of as he stepped closer to PJ, planning to plant himself in front of his godson. “Get out of here, PJ! You don't need involved.”“I'm going nowhere,” PJ shot right back. “I'll stay safe, don't worry, but I'm not leaving you until you get help. Even then I might stay to keep my Patronus up. It can only help you.” Eyes narrowing at the deranged one when she fired off what he knew was the Crucio at Sirius, PJ had enough. He wouldn't use this particular spell on a human, but he could take her wand apart with it. It was a spell called Fire Whip, one that they all had to learn in Care at Bruxaria to deal with the multitude of magical caiman that were all over the damned place in South America. As those things had a hide on them like dragons and a nastier disposition, with them seeing humans as a food source, it was mandatory that they learn it to drive them off.Conjuring the whip that looked like it was made of molten lava with flames licking off it, he took aim then let it fly, snapping Bellatrix's wand in half without touching her hand with it. Oh, he was damned sure that she felt the heat from the thing and probably had blisters from it, but it didn't hurt her. Swirling it over his head, he then took aim at some of the other's wands. It was his hope that this would buy them time as most in the UK wouldn't know this spell as they didn't have the 'pest' problem that required it that other countries did. He got a couple more wands before the idiots got wise and started using freezing spells on it. That was fine as he didn't expect it to work for long, but it helped.Cackling at what PJ did and the help it gave him and Aberforth in distracting the fools, Sirius told him, “You're teaching me that one, too!”“This one I can, easily,” PJ told him, shielding all of them the best he could. Hearing a multitude of cracks behind them, he stiffened up and looked over his shoulder. Relived to see Remus headed in their direction at top speed, followed by what he knew were DMLE and Aurors, he said, “Help has arrived.”“Good,” Sirius said, grinning as some of the Death Eaters started to scatter. “Get behind me and stay put. Don't do anything stupid, either.”Seeing the younger man slip behind Sirius, Aberforth snorted, happy to see plenty starting to help, “Sirius, I don't think you need to worry much about him. He did a damned good job helping us. I'm sure a bit of this saved our bacon.”“That may be, but he's staying behind me,” Sirius chuckled, happy to see Remus join them. Though most of the Death Eaters were now vanishing, there were still enough to cause big problems. Part of him wanted to go after a few of them, like he normally would, but PJ was here and he planned to keep himself planted right where he was to protect him. Glancing at Remus, he snorted then grinned, “You took your own sweet time getting here, didn't you?”“Ah, well, I figured you had it under control, Sirius, so there was no need to rush,” Remus told him, sounding amused. Looking up at the Patronus towering over them, appearing like it was snarling, he added, “Looks like PJ probably helped just a tad as well.”“Oh, he is teaching us some of what he's used, too,” Sirius laughed, happy that the right people were starting to handle this. Looking up when he heard more cracks, he was even happier to see Order members Apparating in and converging on where they were. Great! It meant they could get out without being injured or PJ being in danger.
Leaning up against the side of the Hog's Head, arms crossed over his chest, Sirius was keeping an eye on PJ. At the moment, he was talking to Amelia Bones about what happened. It wasn't anything to worry about, of course, just her getting with witnesses and taking statements. As PJ was here when the whole nightmare started, she needed his statement. That was fine. She had already taken his, not something that took long, so he was just waiting for PJ to finish then he planned on getting his godson home. It wasn't that he was worried about more shite kicking up, at least here, it was just the idea that this was too close of a call for his nerves. Nothing more than that. Along with that he decided that they were coming up with something because PJ wasn't going to end up dropped in the middle of something like this again if he could at all help it.
Focusing on PJ's face, he saw a few smaller cuts there. They were probably from dirt and debris as they weren't the bigger kind from spells. He would make sure to get those healed as well. Groaning, he rubbed a hand over his face. This was too close of a call for him, that's for damned sure. Thankfully, not only did PJ know what he was doing, not being as impulsive as he remembered Harry being, but they had those phones. If they hadn't, this could have had a far worse outcome.Straightening up as he saw PJ come over, he waited until his godson was by him. Putting a hand on the back of his head, he told him, “Hold still. You've got a few cuts I'll heal up for you.” Tending to that, he said, softly, “You were a big help, I want you to know that. We aren't doing this again, though! My heart can't take another call like that.”Chuckling, PJ grinned and admitted, “Didn't do wonders for my nerves either. All I wanted was to pop into Honeydukes to get some chocolate and send some to T, nothing more. Nowhere in those plans did a full out assault on the town factor in.”Laughing as he finished, Sirius kept his hand on the back of PJ's head and rubbed it. Stepping closer, he asked, “You sure you don't have any more injuries?” Looking up and down his body, he didn't see anything, but wanted to make sure.“I'm fine, I promise,” PJ assured him, still grinning. “I just plan to have a beer to steady my nerves when we get home. Those are the only things heavily jangled at the moment. It'll probably be worse when the adrenaline wears off.”“I'm going to join you in that,” Sirius laughed. Hand sliding off the back of PJ's head, he rested it on the side of his face, stroking it softly with his thumb. “I imagine Remus will as well though he's one to hold off on drinking until five.” Sighing, he said, “I've got it all healed, no problem. Was it just getting hit with shite flying or a spell that caused them? Do you know?”“Rocks I think,” PJ told him, smiling at bit at the touch. It felt good and he liked it, so he wouldn't say anything. “Maybe some of the crap that rained down on us when that building went up.”“Good,” Sirius said with a relieved nod. “Nothing to worry about then.” Keeping his hand on the side of PJ's face, he sighed, looking around. “When Remus gets done, we'll head home. I'm sure we'll have a meeting or something tonight. This was big and we have to really start worrying now. So, I want to relax just a tad before we end up bombarded.”“So do I,” PJ admitted. “That and grab something to eat. I planned to order something at the Three Broomsticks before coming home. Yeah, that didn't happen.”“We can grab something on the way home,” Sirius said, finally pulling his hand away as Remus started coming in their direction. Good. That meant they could get out of here.
Standing off to the side, making sure to stay out of the way of the DMLE while they worked, Rita Skeeters Quick Quotes Quill was scribbling madly on her tablet. While she was more of a gossip columnist than a reporter, she was close enough when she heard that Hogsmeade was under attack that she showed up. And she had been the first reporter on the scene. Perfect! That meant she got the scoop and would get paid well for it. Even better.
Looking around, her eyes lit on Sirius Black and the younger man with him. Starting to smile, she knew something good when she saw it. Sirius was the kind that hadn’t settled down with anyone. Gossip told her he just wanted to play the field. What she was seeing was telling her that might have come to an end. As he was still a big enough public figure and well known, any tidbit would be something she could use in something.Sliding over to one of the DMLE officers taking readings on a burnt out house, she asked, tone sickeningly sweet, “Who is that with Sirius Black, do you know? He looks familiar, but I can’t place him.”“He’s with Sirius, if you get my drift,” the man named Bobby told her. “From what I overheard when he was giving his statement to Madam Bones about what happened, he’s living with Sirius.”“Oh, really?” Rita asked, now really intrigued, quill scribbling madly on a fresh sheet of paper. “What’s his name, do you know? And anything about him? There is something familiar about his face, I just can't place it.”“PJ Broadmoor is his name. He's a writer. You've probably seen his face in the papers. One just did an interview with him this week. That one that the ladies like, Better Cauldrons and Spells, something like that. He also has his newest novel in the front window of Flourish and Blotts. Writes crime novels or something like that. The wife bought it and seems to like it.”An almost joyous look passing over Rita's face, she thanked the man then hurried off to the photographer from the Prophet that just arrived. Oh, she wanted plenty of pictures of the damage done to the town, of course, but she wanted a few of Sirius and PJ as well. Especially how they were standing so close with Sirius' hand on his cheek. It would be absolutely perfect for the column she would write on this. Having the quill take notes to get with PJ's publisher and what she could find on him, she was already composing how she wanted this to read. As most of what she was publishing now was boring drek about nothing important, it was good to finally have something nice and juicy for her followers to talk about.
