Chapter 14
As he petted Nagini's head, Harry looked out the window, sighing at the grey, rainy day. At the moment, Sirius was in the shower and he was flopped on their bed, sprawled out, head resting on his folded arm. They hadn't had breakfast yet, as he was waiting for Sirius to finish. Of course, he was still tired, something probably exaggerated by the rain and gloom, but feeling a tad more alert than he had been. He supposed that was due to the potions he was taking.
With a blurry sigh, he shut his eyes, wanting to go back to sleep and skip breakfast, but wouldn't. Sirius was more than slightly agitated over this whole mess and wanted him awake as much as he could be, so he would try. Well, that and eat, as him not consuming much also had his godfather plenty upset as well. So, he would try.Nagini gave a hissy sigh of pleasure from what Harry was doing then asked, him, glancing his way, “Are you feeling a little better, Harry?”“Some,” Harry told her honestly, continuing to stroke her head. Then, giving a quick look out the window, he added, “The gloom is probably adding to how tired I am. Rainy weather always makes you that way.”“Very true, even for those of us who aren't human,” Nagini admitted, still hissing contentedly. After shifting around so she could look at him and taking in the expression on his face, she told him as gently as she was able, “I'm worried about you, Harry. Though we haven't known each other long, I consider you a friend and adore our talks.”“I'll be fine,” Harry sighed, giving a little sigh and shutting his eyes. “Just give me time,” he added softly.“I do hope so, because I'm concerned and rather enjoy talking with you. It's nice to have someone around that's willing to chat as Tom is ever so busy all the time,” she told him softly, pressing her head into his hand. While Harry continued to stroke her head, he smiled just a tad, but said nothing, eyes not opening.“You can talk to me about anything you like, Harry,” Nagini assured him softly. Though she had told him this a few times by now, she wanted to make certain he remembered it. Then she added, “About anything and you have my word I won't tell anyone, including Tom. The only time I will is if I think you're in danger of hurting yourself or something really bad is happening, like you grow ill.”“I'll remember, I promise,” Harry told her, head coming up as Sirius came back in. With a tired groan, he scooted to the edge of the bed and dangled his feet off it, waiting for Sirius to finish buttoning his shirt and put on his robes. He was as dressed as he was going to get in dungarees, a warm shirt and some slippers. As he didn't anticipate them going outside, he didn't think it mattered with the slippers.Happy to see Harry sitting up and looking slightly more alert than he had been, Sirius grinned at him. “Give me a few and I'll be ready then we can get something to eat.” After finishing up the buttons on his robe, he sat down to put his shoes on. As he did, he asked, “Where would you like to eat this morning? We usually stay in here, but I vote we get out and eat somewhere else. I'd suggest outside, but that's not a good idea. There are charms to keep the rain off, but it's still humid and sticky feeling.” Then he waited to see what Harry said. While he figured the answer was a variation of 'I don't care', he planned to push for something to get him out of the room. He just wasn't sure what to do so that they were going about this in a way they hadn't before.“In the room is fine,” Harry told him, still petting Nagini's head. “It doesn't matter to me.”Just as he figured. However, he wasn't going to let it stay there. After wracking his brain for something different, he grinned then said, “I have an idea! Let's have Nagini show us where the kitchen is. Not only can we sit in there and eat, but we'll know where it is that way. If we know, we can go raid it here and there on some nights rather than summon an elf.”“Oh, yes, something I can easily do,” Nagini told Harry, rather enthused by the idea of showing them. “You'll like it, Harry. It's ever so nice and homey in there. The elves will like it as well.”Once he translated what she said to Sirius, Harry let out a sigh and nod. “We can do it, I suppose.” It wasn't that he was overly enthused by the idea, but it might be interesting for future purposes.“Lead the way, Nagini,” Sirius said, standing. After helping Harry up, they followed the snake with Sirius talking to Harry the entire way. As neither of them had seen the whole house yet, only parts, he was keeping an eye out as to what was where. One never knew when you could use something when it came to the nightmare they were in.Though Harry allowed himself to be guided along, he wasn't real motivated. All he wanted to do was eat then go lay down again, nothing more.
Once he and Harry were seated at a small butcher block style table in the kitchen, with Nagini on a stool by his godson, Sirius gave a nod. This was nice! It was a standard bigger kitchen, of course, but it not only smelled wonderful, but the house elves were fussing over them like they were honored guests. After giving Harry a clap on the shoulder, he told the elf hovering there, the one happily pulling on his ears, “Can we do something a bit different this morning?”
“Whatever Master wants,” the small elf squeaked, bowing repeatedly. Since their Master rarely showed up in the kitchen, always just summoning one of them, they all adored having the new Masters in here.“Rather than just bring us plates of food, can you serve it up like you would for a normal meal?” Sirius asked, assuming it wouldn't be a problem. It was his thought that if Harry could dish up the amount he wanted, he might eat more as he wouldn't be so overwhelmed by the sheer amount of food there.“Wes can do that,” the elf told him with a happy smile, bowing more.“What do you want to drink, Harry? Your normal?” Sirius asked. He figured Harry would just want what he typically had, but if he was given more choices, he might do a bit better.Harry watched as the serving ware appeared along with the place settings, thinking it over. Like most everything else, this wasn't as easy as usual. After pondering it, he said, “The normal tea and some choccy milk, if I can.”“That's fine,” Sirius nodded, trying not to grin. While chocolate milk wasn't the healthiest thing in the world for you, at least Harry made a choice for something he wanted.Almost immediately the tea pot appeared, the same with his juice and Harry's milk. After pouring them both some tea and fixing his up, he leaned back in the chair and looked around. With a nudge, he told Harry, “I vote we do this more often. It's better than staying in our room to eat.”“This—I like it,” Harry admitted softly, looking around. It felt better than the other rooms in the house for some reason that he couldn’t figure out.“So do I,” Sirius admitted, relaxing in his chair and sipping his tea. For him, it was the aromas, which reminded him of staying with James and how their kitchen smelled. It brought back wonderful memories. When the food began appearing on the table, he straightened up and started piling it on his plate. It seemed that the elves remembered what he told them about Harry's favorite foods, because that's what they served up.Though his stomach didn't growl over what he was seeing and smelling, Harry was actually interested in the food, at least a little. After waiting for Sirius to get what he wanted, Harry then dished up some for himself. Once he got a bit of everything on his plate, he began eating his porridge. It tasted wonderful. As he ate, Sirius fought off grinning. He was keeping an eye on Harry, of course, and liked what he saw. Yeah, they were going to go about how they were dealing with the food part this way. Harry was actually eating more than he had been because he had a choice of what he wanted, could take as much, or little, as he liked and he had been asked what he wanted to have on parts. It was working out better than anything else they had tried so far. And he would keep right on going with it as it could only help more.Rather than focus on the eating and mention it, he changed topics, “Since it's a rather nasty day out, something that makes you blah anyway, I was thinking of kicking the research for the day and finding something else to do. Anything you would like, Harry? Besides sleeping, that is. Maybe something like curl up in one of the parlors with a big fire and play games, use the rec room, something like that?”After finishing off the porridge, Harry pushed the bowl away then nibbled at his bacon, thinking over what Sirius asked. Though he honestly just wanted to go back to sleep for the most part, he thought getting out of the room would do them both good. Sirius had to be going slightly mental doing nothing but research and there wasn't much to do alone, honestly. Well, besides dwell on just how bad this nightmare was, that is. A minute or so later, he said, “Let's find a room with a big fireplace and play some games. At least for a time. Not sure how long I'll be awake.”“Sounds like a good plan to me,” Sirius agreed, trying not to grin. Maybe if he kept Harry busy, he would stay awake longer. That's what he was shooting for. “I'll teach you some of our card games. I know you've played the standard, but haven't some of the others, so I'll walk you through those.”“All right,” Harry nodded, finishing what was on his plate then pushing it aside before sipping at his chocolate milk. It tasted really good since he hadn't had any for what seemed like forever. This was getting better. While it wasn't a major, earth-shattering improvement, it was several steps in the right direction and Sirius planned to capitalize on it all he could. He also made a mental note to make sure the elves brought in some of the soda junk here and there. With the amount of caffeine in that stuff, it should help keep Harry awake longer. He expected naps to come into play, but wanted to keep him up as long as he could.Sirius kept on the topic and began explaining some of the games he knew, hoping to get a feel for what Harry might like and would keep him interested. Once he had that, he would press on from there, planning to make the whole venture as fun as he could to hold Harry's interest. There were plenty of other bits and bobs he could try as well to stimulate him into being interested. Those were areas he planned to try as well. Anything to help just how bad this situation was and get Harry back to as close as he had been as quickly as he could manage.
As a knot popped in the fireplace, Harry opened his eyes and looked at it, watching the flames dance as they filled the room with a wonderful heat. The weather hadn't changed much since that morning, other than growing worse. Now the rain was being driven by a blustery wind that he could imagine was plenty cold. He and Sirius were still in the smallish parlor they had picked to play games in, sprawled in front of the fireplace on something like an air mattress his godfather had conjured. While he wasn't sure exactly what kind, all he knew was it was at least as comfortable as any mattress he had ever slept on.
While he stared into the fire, he listened to Sirius' deep breathing behind him and smiled just a tad. For the first time since he had grown so tired all the time, he was awake while Sirius was asleep. When Sirius shifted a tad, his arm going around him, Harry's smile turned into something sad looking and he shut his eyes with a melancholy sigh. Oh, he still adored it when Sirius touched or kissed him like he always had, but it was different now.Since that dream, hallucination, whatever you wanted to call it that heralded this nightmare, those innocent bits he had always adored from Sirius were tainted. Every time his godfather touched or kissed him, he had visions of what happened during that—whatever it was. And he hated it. He wanted it back the way it was before that—whatever it was ruined the feelings with the sex tossed in. All he wanted was to forget the sex thing ever happened, but he couldn't. Every touch and kiss now brought back visions of what took place and he remembered the feelings he experienced during it. And, Merlin help him, part of him wanted to do it again. It was something he loathed and wanted to hide, but couldn’t. Each time he looked at Sirius, it triggered part of that memory and he couldn't shake what he remembered from it, such as the look on Sirius' face, how it felt, what Sirius said, all of it. Part of him wanted to cry over the loss of what he had adored with his godfather for so long.Despite what Mrs. Weasley said that one time, the Weasleys weren't the next best thing to his family, Sirius was his family. No one, anywhere, cared for him the way Sirius did since he escaped. He couldn't see any of the Weasleys, he didn't care which one, doing what Sirius had that put him in so much danger, let alone eating rats to survive, just be close in case he needed them. Only Sirius would do that. Only Sirius did some of the bits to make his life easier. Only Sirius risked getting caught so many times for him. Only Sirius came up with a way they could talk while he was in school because his godfather knew he would have problems and might end up set off over so much. No one in his life, anywhere, would do that for him. Hermione and Ron did plenty, no doubt, but not what Sirius had. If it came down to it, his two friends would have chosen to follow whatever Dumbledore wanted rather that what was best for him. Sirius didn't. With Sirius, he came first and always had.He supposed, because he now had someone in his life that truly only cared about him that the change in the relationship made it all the worse. In that, it fueled what he was feeling with so much, adding to the rest of the mess, something that didn't help at all. Truthfully, he could handle the part with Tom better than he could this end, as odd as it sounded. All he wanted was the relationship this nightmare changed back, nothing more. He could handle anything else. Well, maybe, as it was plenty hard.Eyes going shut once more, he sighed, feeling Sirius hold him closer. It still felt wonderful when Sirius did bits like this, better than anything else in the world, in fact. It was just—it wasn't the same and he hated that it wasn't. Well and truly hated it. The fact that he couldn't go back, no matter what, made him want to hex Draco in ways he hadn't before. Because of that little oik, he had lost the one thing in the world that meant the most to him; the platonic love and affection with Sirius. And nothing between him and Sirius would ever be the same again. He hated the thought, really, truly hated it.In time, he supposed he would adjust to the new relationship and deal with it, just like he had so much else in his life, but he was sure he would miss what was lost as well. Probably more than anyone would realize. And there wasn't anything he could do about it either. If anything, that was the worst part of it.Without opening his eyes, Harry shifted around and rolled over, being careful not to wake Sirius. After curling up tighter to his godfather, feeling the man hold him closer, he gave a soft sigh and willed himself to fall asleep so he didn't have to think about this mess anymore. For the first time since he grew so tired, though, he couldn't manage. He just laid there, listening to the reassuring thunder that was Sirius' heartbeat. It was soothing in a huge way, but he wanted the oblivion that came with sleep, though he figured that like so much else in his life he wouldn't get what he craved the most. After draping an arm over Sirius, he gave a soft sigh and tucked his head under his godfather's chin, just like he always had when they hugged. While it still felt amazing, it didn't quell what he was dealing with. Harry pushed it aside the best he could and just focused on how it felt, well, the best he could anyway. As he tried, some of what Sirius said when he talked to him about taking the potions came back to him.Unlike what he let on to so many, he knew Sirius fairly well and they talked about plenty through the mirrors, though no one else knew they had, not even Remus. They talked about not only his parents, something he wanted to hear about, but a multitude of other things, like what Sirius knew about a lot of others. While they discussed what was going on with the war, they also talked about far more personal areas. It was there Harry learned so much about Sirius, such as what his family was like, Azkaban and plenty of other areas. He was sure he was the only one that knew Sirius had problems dealing with the aftermath of being around the Dementors for so long. Couple that with being confined to a house that held horrific memories and he had 'issues' with plenty. While his godfather didn't out and out call them by a name, Harry had picked up on the fact that he had problems dealing with some of them and the two of them talking helped. With all Sirius did for him, he was more than happy to just talk to his godfather about some of it. Either that or just listen. He did a lot of the latter over the last year or so. And it seemed to help, something that made him very happy. After they talked, once Sirius started discussing some areas, even Harry could see that he seemed like he was coping with so much better than he had been. Though Harry didn't understand exactly what Sirius went through in that house and what he felt about it, he at least had some sort of foundation because of the Dursleys and thought he probably understood better than most, so he could talk it out with Sirius. The two of them, he realized, were more alike than almost everyone thought and understood each other better than anyone else seemed to. It made him feel good that he had a relationship with his godfather which was so different than with anyone else. And he adored how they could help each other just by talking. There were times that he felt that the only reason he didn't just completely lose it the year before was because he could talk to Sirius about what he was dealing with. Rather than end up ridiculed, something he feared from others, Sirius understood and talked him through it. And he did the same with his godfather. It helped to form a relationship he had unlike any other in his life and he loved it.As Harry lay there, not opening his eyes, he gave Sirius a squeeze and sighed. Then that exhaustion washed over him once more, the kind he had been dealing with. For once, he was grateful for it and welcomed falling asleep once more lest he make what he was dealing with worse. As he slid off to sleep again, one lone tear trickled out the corner of his eye and snaked its way down his cheek. Of course, it would be gone soon, what with his body heat and the warmth from the fire, but it was there.
Nagini poked her head into the room Harry and Sirius had been in earlier to check on them. Like when she left the two, as it grew hot enough she wanted to go elsewhere so she didn't overheat, they were stretched out in front of the fire. This time, though, they were sleeping together.
Tongue flicking to check on them, she then slithered in further and coiled up, staying away from where the fire blazed hotly. While Harry was doing a little better, something she could sense, there was still a deep sadness there that disturbed her. It was even worse that she didn't understand where it came from. Tom had explained part of it, well the best he could as he wasn't sure he had all the reasons, but it didn't fit with what she sensed from Harry. With a hissy sigh, she rested her head on her coils and watched the two, not sure what to do. Harry didn't seem like he wanted to talk much, even with her reassuring him she wouldn't say a word to Tom and she didn't know how to get him to open up any at all. He had just closed himself off, to an extent anyway. From what she could see, he had done the same with Sirius as well, not talking to him the way he had been. No, she didn't like this at all, but didn't know how to get Harry to talk to her. As she really didn't have much close contact with humans, other than Tom, she wasn't schooled in so much of their behavior and emotions. Tom wasn't like Harry or Sirius and didn't act like the two. He was more of the unemotional sort that locked everything away, though he talked to her about some of it. What she knew from him didn't help her much with Harry.Though she wanted to go over and lay with Harry like she had been, she didn't. Not only was it too hot in front of the fire for her to be comfortable, she didn't want to startle Sirius when he woke up. He still wasn't used to her enough yet. After a few moments of contemplating it, she uncoiled then slithered up onto the settee and relaxed. She would wait until they woke up and see what she could manage with Harry. There had to be something that would help him, she just had to find it. Nothing more than that.
