Chapter 14
It was one of those mornings for Severus. Oh, it wasn’t bad, just—odd.
He had started with him pulled into one of Harry and Sirius’ strange ideas for fun; a game Sirius called ‘Who Has Your Bits’. As he was just waking up and trying to shake off the last foggy vestiges of sleep, he wasn’t as alert as normal, thus ending up drawn in. Before he knew it, there were hands all over him while they wrestled around on the bed then a very vigorous bout of sex took place. While he really didn’t mind horseplay or the sex, especially the sex, it was the idea he let his guard down. Now he was off kilter because of it since it threw off his normal routine. However, it put him in an excellent mood. All it meant is it would take time for him to once more gain his bearings and focus.
After settling down at the table and organizing his notes, he then took his first bracing sip of tea while Sirius and Harry joked around as they too readied themselves for brekky. Smirking as they joked around, though ensuring he lowered his head so they couldn’t see, he made his usual disapproving noises as they thought it normal before saying, “If you two are done with the tomfoolery, we need to lay out how we’re proceeding today.”
“You always lay it out, we just follow,” Sirius chuckled, taking a drink of his tea and starting to pile food on his plate.
“You’re better at the whole organizational thing anyway,” Harry added, snickering softly as he started to eat.
“Well, true,” Severus conceded, smirk returning. “However, I do want your input in the whole production. Both of you have given quite astute suggestions which have helped so far.”
“You said you wanted to start in the ballroom and organize the furniture a tad, didn’t you?” Sirius asked, trying to remember what Severus said the night before.
“It was my thought, yes,” Severus nodded, starting to eat after putting his notes by the plate.
“Set the elves onto the carpeting and that while we tend to it,” Sirius started after eating a few bites. “The hallways first is my thought. We can then take them on by setting up the lights. After we finish, we’ll start in whatever rooms they have done and go from there.”
“I think sorting the furniture will take plenty of time anyway,” Harry chimed in as he ate.
“It may,” Severus nodded in agreement. “However, if we just sort it into the basic classes of items, we should end up fine. That way, if we want something we can just look in the groupings and pick from there.”
“The way to go, I think,” Sirius nodded. “You both might want to start on something else while I work on the lights. My thought is the halls will take plenty of time for me to finish. I’m doing them the same way I did the bedroom, so it’ll take me a fair bit of work to tend to.”
“Once you start, Harry and I will see what the elves have done then proceed accordingly,” Severus nodded, making note of the changes. “At some point today I want to talk to Eddie about the ghost taking on theory with Harry when it comes to some subjects.” He then smirked bigger when he heard the requisite groan from the youngest of them.
“They’ll show up then we can talk with them,” Sirius chuckled, giving Harry a playful shove. While he didn’t think they needed an actual agenda or to lay out just what they were doing as they’d manage however they went about it, but this was typical for Severus, so he went with it. Besides, if they didn’t have an actual plan and idea how they wanted to go about whatever, Severus ended up becoming strange about everything then grouchy. Since they were trying to make this go as smoothly as possible, it was best to let him have at it and do it his way. It was the same with knowing just what they were tackling at any given moment.
“This should take up most of the day,” Severus told the two as he looked over the list, calculating how much time it should take for each task. Then, with a dry sigh, he added, “Providing you two don’t come up with more bizarre games and drag me into them.” He then lifted his eyes and glared at the grinning duo.
“That was fun and the best way to start the day, admit it,” Sirius laughed, nudging the chuckling Harry.
“Well, I do concede it does start the day out right, but not while we’re working, Black,” Severus told him with a slight huff.
“Makes time go faster,” Sirius told him with a winning grin, shoulders shaking slightly.
Unable to help himself, Severus rolled his eyes and shook his head. “You’re incorrigible,” he then told him, tone exasperated.
“Something you’ve known all along,” Sirius shot right back, still grinning.
“No comment,” Severus snorted, going back to his food. As he ate, he questioned the two about the rooms with the furniture. He did plan to take a gander himself to see what was there. If the elves delayed them working on some rooms, he might take the chance to look around.
“We’ve all come up with nothing, Albus,” Arthur told the aging Headmaster with a sad shake of his head. “Everything we’ve found that might track them has come back with no result. As we know, the Ministry isn’t faring any better. They are coming up with the same results, despite the fact they have more at their disposal. While we all think this is You-Know-Who, there are no clues what he is planning unless you know something we don’t.”
“I’m at as much of a loss as the rest of you are,” Albus admitted with a blurry sigh and sad shake of his head. “Septima even tried a few very complex Arithmatic equations to help and they came back with nothing either.” Arthur had come at his request to fill him in on what the rest of the Order knew. While it was the middle of the day and classes were in session, they were going about it this way as it worked out best.
“Now what are we doing about the whole—situation?” Arthur asked, looking crestfallen. All of them were worried about Harry, of course, not to mention Sirius. “The Ministry has nothing to do with this from what we’ve heard. If they did, they would have captured Sirius, something everyone would have heard about. Their leanings are it’s the work of You-Know-Who.”
“We press on with the rest,” Albus told him softly. “While we’ll continue the hunt for Harry and Sirius, we can’t ignore the war going on. It needs our attention. Like the rest, I’m certain this is a ploy of Tom’s as well. I’m also equally as sure that he’s laying low and planning something huge. We all need to stay on alert for whatever he might do.”
Then, lowering his voice, he added, “Consider that if he does have the three, he will get the information he wants from them in some way. I very much doubt anyone could hold out against the torture Tom would put them through to get what he wants. Which means we need to prepare to protect ourselves better and change plans.”
“I don’t think any of us thought about it in such a way,” Arthur admitted, going quite pale at the thought. He didn’t even want to consider what You-Know-Who might be doing to the three to get what he wanted out of them. And what Sirius and Severus knew could, and probably would, cause all manner of problems for them in the future. Harry—like the other ones younger, he didn’t know much, but did some and acquainted with plenty. This was the worst case scenario for so much.
“It’s not a pleasant thought, but one we now have to consider and plan around,” Albus admitted with a sad shake of his head.
As the aging Headmaster pressed on about plans for a meeting and how he needed to stay circumspect because of Amelia’s vendetta against him, his mind kept drifting to just how much Severus knew about his plans. Thankfully it wasn’t everything, but he knew more than most. While Severus could hold out against plenty, he was now certain Tom would get all the information Severus knew. This meant he had a multitude of plans to change and had to shift gears. Yes, it was time to step up plenty, like the Horcrux hunt. Nothing could end this war without those gone. It was time to have others help and for them to move fast. He would just stay alert for signs from both the Ministry and Tom then make sure his footsteps in all of it was very light. Once he was going well with that plan, he would focus on finding Harry. It was doubtful Tom would kill him without witnesses. At least he hoped. He was certain Severus and Sirius might already be gone, but Harry was alive, at least he thought he was. As long as Harry lived, they had a chance. He pinned his hopes on that thought and would push from there.
As Albus planned and fretted over so much, trying to shift around the mess he had, Lord Voldemort was in his private quarters, pacing around in a rage. The cause of his consternation was the same as Albus’; the disappearance of Potter and Severus. Unlike Albus, he thought the Ministry had Potter hidden somewhere for some reason. He wasn’t sure why, but felt they did. Them having the brat was the only reasonable explanation he had. By now he knew Albus didn’t think so from other sources. The Ministry only made sense. As for Severus? He was dead, probably at the hands of some of his other followers. He would figure out which one then they would pay at some point.
After another trip around the room with Nagini resting on the settee urging him to calm down, he threw himself into his favorite chair, skeletal fingers drumming on the arm of it. He had to have Potter, all there was to the matter. It came down to he couldn’t take over with the brat around. While he had sources in the Ministry who were feeding him what they could find on the matter, he now had no one in Albus’ camp. This meant he needed to find a way.
“We need a plan to find Potter,” he told Nagini, though knew she wouldn’t be much help. “I need that boy to ensure I can fulfill my plans.” This was more talking to himself in the guise of saying it to her since she wasn’t the sort who had suggestions he could use. However, it didn’t help. He was coming up with nothing.
Mind focused on finding Potter and what everyone speculated, he growled softly, red eyes narrowed. Maybe, just maybe, it was time to take the Ministry. If they had Potter, he would find the brat that way. Then he could do a very public execution to cow the masses. After he solved the Potter problem, he could do as he wished. While he’d have to watch out for that old goat Albus, he might manage what he needed.
While he didn’t have everything worked out, he had enough and it was time. With a determined expression on his face, he stood and touched his Dark Mark, summoning those he needed information from or to gather intelligence. Yes, he’d press on. The Ministry would fall then be his. Once it did, he would have Potter then go from there. While he focused on the Ministry, the time had come to run Albus in circles. He could manage.
Not bothering to hide the small smile on his face as he leaned against the doorjamb and watched the two curled up on the settee together, Severus folded his arms over his chest. Oh, he would join them shortly, but he liked to see them like this. While Harry leaned against him, Sirius had an arm around the younger man, holding him close. Though not as comfortable as those two when it came to displays of affection, he did like knowing it was there and he was part of it. Over his life, he hadn’t been with anyone steady, so had missed out on such endeavors. While he’d had sexual partners, they weren’t for more than sex. There were no displays of affection or closeness.
As he gazed at the two just talking and sipping their drinks, he felt that niggling of insecurity again. Though not the sort who spent much time analyzing his feeling about whatever, these two brought on such ponderings. The issue was his lack of experience with relationships, bringing on the insecurities. Sirius, even back in school, had a self-confidence he never did when it came to almost everything. This included relationships or dealing with those he had an interest in. It now carried over to not only their relationship before Harry joined, but after as well. His ease with so much showed easily in how this worked out. Because of that trait, Severus often felt slightly insecure that Sirius would grow bored and move on to someone who could easily show the affection he did. While he realized it wouldn’t happen as Sirius seemed to adore the relationship as much as he did, it wouldn’t leave him. Then, when Harry joined, it became slightly more exaggerated.
Though Harry had even less experience in relationships than he did, the ease of his relationship with Sirius seemed to bring on more of those feelings. The two were so close and seemed to have the easy relationship of best friends that he often thought, though he didn’t want to, that they would forget him and go it alone. It was unrealistic, he understood this, but it lingered.
If he thought hard on the topic, he realized it came down to him giving up finding anyone long ago because of so much. No one would want him because of his looks, personality, history and a myriad of other issues. Before Sirius, he had resigned himself to being alone all his life, always pining for what he had seen as his only chance at love; Lily. Then it translated into he adored having the two in his life and the thoughts of losing them caused plenty of anxiety. He was almost afraid he would make a mistake which would drive the two away then he would end up left alone again with only himself to blame. Just like what happened with Lily. It was something he didn’t think he could handle.
Those anxieties were there, something he couldn’t rid himself of, but he pressed on, realizing it probably wouldn’t happen. While they would have arguments, like all couples, the two were the sort who wouldn’t leave him over minor missteps. They had actually proven they wouldn’t in plenty of ways, the act of pulling themselves out of the war and hiding was only one of those and not the biggest.
Early on, he knew that for this to work, honesty had to come into play, in many areas. Before it pressed on too far, he came clean about his past and how he had given the prophecy, what he heard of it anyway, to the Dark Lord. While Sirius had grown angry and shouted, with Harry just glaring at him, they had talked it out then pressed on from there. Of course, they had been cool for a week or so, but hadn’t ended the relationship. If the two could accept his choices so long ago and not walk away, chances were everything else would work out as well. He just needed to keep reminding himself of that.
There were other signs as well, ones he kept pointing out to himself when the doubts cropped up. The two worked with his eccentricities and how he liked having whatever done. They listened and didn’t argue about areas he knew more about. They also made certain to compromise on plenty. Yes, they were taking so much into account and seemingly wanted this to work out as much as he did that he didn’t feel it would end on a whim or he would be left behind as they focused on each other. It was more he had to just keep reminding himself of that when the doubts came in.
As the two morphed what they were doing into a bit of a wrestling match, poking each other and laughing, he let out an amused snort. Yes, he would now join. While he didn’t want pulled into a wrestling match, he just wanted to sit with them and feel the closeness. As they relaxed, they would decide on what to do for the rest of the night.
Though he hid the smile, he couldn’t wipe the mirthful expression on his face off as he stepped into the room and shook his head at their antics. He found it amusing, after all, he just wouldn’t tell Black he did. Who knows what Black would come up with if he knew that tidbit!
After ensuring the fire in the pit was blazing enough, Severus leaned back on the bench, pleased. Arm slipping around Harry’s shoulders as the younger wizard leaned against him, he found himself content. Like usual, Sirius was seated on the other side of Harry, hand on his leg. Finished with the normal for the night, they came outside to relax. Though a tad chilly, it soothed them all and they enjoyed the fire. It pleased him and he found it quite relaxing.
“Are we doing anything special tonight or just relaxing?” Harry asked, head resting on Severus’ shoulder. He assumed they’d discuss options then go from there and decide on something they’d all like.
“I thought, keeping in the theme of the bonfire type activities, we’d do stories again,” Severus suggested, starting to smirk once more. Then he produced a book the Librarian helped him find earlier. “Rather than tell them from memory, I thought reading them would work better.”
“I like it,” Sirius grinned, giving Harry a small nudge before sending for the standard. “Is it a longish book? I assume we won’t finish it tonight.”
“It’s actually an anthology of many short stories,” Severus explained rubbing Harry’s shoulder where his hand rested. “This should work better for us as we can finish them.”
“Great idea,” Harry agreed, though not moving as he liked the closeness with Severus. It wasn’t often Severus did this sort of thing, so he wanted to enjoy it.
“We can take turns reading stories this way,” Severus told them. “As short as some are, more than one a night is manageable.”
“Just what we need; several spooky stories to read while we are working on a house which is in horrid shape and makes noises we aren’t used to yet. Not to mention has its own resident ghosts,” Sirius laughed, taking the mugs an elf brought then summoning the table close by to rest everything on.
“Well, yes, they may cause some apprehension,” Severus admitted, looking amused. “I ensured the book is the sort which is very realistic and rather frightening.”
“This should end up interesting,” Harry laughed. “Not sure how it can end up too frightening, what with everything we’ve seen and how the odd is ignored because our world is generally strange anyway.”
“Oh, trust me, these are the sort which are meant for our kind and frightening,” Severus assured him, amused look growing. “Just keep in mind we have nightlights and the ghosts to watch out for us.”
“I can’t wait to hear these,” Sirius snickered, shaking his head while passing the two a mug of hot choccy each. “Not really heard any that have frightened me other than when I was growing up.”
“These are intended for adults,” Severus explained, taking the beverage and putting it on the table by him.
“Should end up interesting, as I said,” Harry grinned, now interested in seeing how frightening they were.
“We’ll just ensure we stick together after going inside,” Severus told them, smirking at the idea. As he made certain to pick a book he knew the stories were not only very realistic, but intended to scare the wits out of everyone, he couldn’t wait to see the reaction. Yes, it might end up a most interesting night.
Head coming up off the pillow, Severus squinted then looked around. He wasn’t sure if it was a real noise which woke him or one in the odd dream. Eyes taking in everything around, pleased that the nightlight Sirius installed worked so he could see everything, he decided the noise came from his dream. Giving a grunt, he shook his head then shifted around to get comfortable. It was then he noticed that he was once more in the middle.
Now, he knew they hadn’t gone to sleep like this for certain. Sirius had taken the place on the bed nearest the door while he had taken the opposite side with Harry in the middle. There had been a bit of play of the winding down sort, nothing too vigorous, before they settled in. If the two had shifted positions, he would have felt it because even now he wasn’t relaxed enough to not end up woken by them shifting too much.
Gazing between the two, he let out a tired groan. Yes, the mystery of this would end up solved because he wanted to know the how behind it. Since they had moved in, this happened every night and he still didn’t know why. And he wanted to!
With a tired sigh, his head flopped back onto the pillow and eyes drifted shut. While he wanted to understand how it kept happening, he had to admit he liked it, a lot. No, he wouldn’t force them to change if this is how they wanted to sleep, just to understand.
With a tired sigh, he then smiled just a little as the two pressed tighter to him. It felt wonderful. Very shortly afterward he began to drift off to sleep once more, the smile still on his face.
