Chapter 13
“Everything is here and what you need, right?” Sirius asked, standing in the doorway of the small room Remus would use as a potions lab, after checking to ensure Harry was fine, still lounging by the pool. “And the ingredients ordered?”
“All ready to go,” Remus assured him, double checking everything was in place and set up how he wanted it. “The ingredients, what we don’t have any way, should arrive tomorrow morning. I have most of what I need for the basics and will brew up a couple we need today. Those will take no time at all.” Then, lowering his voice, he added, “The first one is the sleeping potion, one of the mild ones. Harry needs to take it tonight, I think.” Harry had another of the nightmares last night and looked plenty tired from it as he didn’t fall back to sleep easily and kept waking up.
“Good,” Sirius nodded, stepping in and looking around. “He was dozing off by the pool, but needs more sleep. I’m sure it’ll grow worse from here on out.” Then, quietly, he added, “For both of us and probably you as well. We all know you handle the stress better than we do when it comes to plenty, but this will start bugging you as well, Remus.”
“A point I’ll concede,” Remus admitted with a nod, ensuring the ingredients they did have were there in sufficient quantities for what he needed. “When we receive the order, I’ll tackle something stronger, as it’ll help more.”
When he was certain he had what he needed, he stepped back and asked, “Anything come in we need to worry about?” By now, owls were streaming in from plenty of places, so the mail didn’t just arrive first thing in the morning like in most households. As it was best to stay on top of what arrived, he wanted to check.
“Some,” Sirius grumbled. “The business I handled. Most of that was just what I needed aware of. The phones are in and programmed. Everything is ready to go. The day after tomorrow we need to go out and look at the setup to ensure its right. Once we give the all clear, they’ll start. The contracts are signed, like with the Ministry, so they can get to it. Everyone we had ahead of time is ready to go and know the plans. The day after the inspection completes, they’ll get. The others are training those they’ve hired and are doing what they should. It all means we’re right on schedule and should be on time when it comes to opening.”
“This is good and a load of stress off,” Remus smiled, nodding. “Should lessen the stress of that part anyway. What’s coming might end up worse, though.”
“I’m sure it will,” Sirius admitted with a heavy sigh. “It’s when the true danger starts. Everyone working will end up in danger in some way. They know it and the security people are ready to go as well. Plato made damned sure they’ve been briefed about how bad this is and the Ministry will do what they can to make certain they have some protection. It should hold off the worst as we’ve done more thorough background checks than Plato has ever run before to make damned sure no one working for us has connections to any of the followers of that evil arse. We now just have to wait and handle problems as they come. Those—they’re coming and we know it.”
“We’ll take it as it comes,” Remus assured him. “All have made certain we have as much in place as we can manage to make this run as smoothly as it can.”
“True, but spanners always turn up,” Sirius admitted.
“It’s not all that came in,” Sirius then told him softly, shaking his head, starting to cover the rest. “We have another invite to Molly and Arthur’s for dinner this weekend. They want to schedule it for a time we aren’t busy with something, like Harry being on the phone. Which means we won’t manage to pull off what we did the last time.”
“We figured that was coming,” Remus sighed. “I say we make it clear we’ll be busy this weekend, not a lie if we have to do the inspections. If we do it on a weeknight, we won’t have to stay as long, thus it’s less likely to give them time to push for so much.”
“A damned good idea we’ll take,” Sirius agreed with a nod. “We’re doing so much of this on the weekends as it’s less likely to end up noticed, that the weekdays are better. I’ll let you take on the letter to them.”
“I’ll handle it,” Remus assured him. “Anything else?”
“Ron and Hermione wrote to Harry,” Sirius then added softly. “I didn’t open them, of course, and will tell him, but I’m going to suggest he hold off reading them until after tea and the bit with his hair. It’ll put him in a better mood and he’ll be in a better frame of mind to tackle whatever is in them.”
“An excellent suggestion,” Remus said, pleased with the idea. “Either then or he can wait until tomorrow. It’s not like anything they’ll say will end up earth-shattering. Let him have a good night’s rest then he can better handle whatever.”
He then lowered his voice and added, “I have no doubt those letters will contain something which will upset him. As I helped him compose the replies to the last ones, I know what they said. Ron might handle it well, but I’m sure Hermione will huff at him over plenty.”
“Something he doesn’t need,” Sirius groused, shaking his head, folding his arms over his chest. “Harry’s in far better shape than he was with so much, but if she pushes, he’s going to blow up on her. And I don’t blame him a damned bit if he does! She needs to temper herself with him. While I’m damned sure the two realize he’s no longer the same person, they’re going to push for plenty like they always used to and nothing he’ll say will deter them.”
“If they do, they don’t know what they’ll invoke on themselves,” Remus snorted, smiling just a tad. “The little boy who would do anything for acceptance is long gone. His self-confidence is now normal and he won’t put up with what he used to. While he wants to reconnect with his first true friends, he’s not going to tolerate plenty, something they’ll find out quick smart if they tread somewhere he doesn’t like.”
“And I bet he will, more than once, until they either get a clue or walk off,” Sirius chuckled, grinning at the idea. Harry had changed, more than anyone here knew. He would not put up with what he used to as people were bound to find out. While polite and nice, he wasn’t a doormat either. When it came down to it, he would put his foot down and ensure some nonsense stopped if he didn’t like it. Ron and Hermione hadn’t seen that part of him in the past as it took time for them to teach him to do so. And when Harry put his foot down, there was no dissuading him from the stance.
“Should be right interesting to see when it comes,” Remus chuckled, smiling a tad. He then sobered up and added, “If he doesn’t backslide because this is once more putting him in the place he was before we took him. It’s something we do need to keep an eye out for, Sirius. He hasn’t dealt with such matters since leaving.”
“We will,” Sirius assured him. Then, with a snort, he grinned, “Doubt it’ll be needed, though. It’s so ingrained now, something we’ve made damned sure of, that it’s doubtful he’ll revert back. If nothing else, the reaction might end up more pronounced because of the change and who’s pushing.”
“There is that as well,” Remus snorted, smile growing. “He’s under enough stress, it might come faster than normal, too. We’ll see. Either way, I’m sure one of the two, though my money is on Hermione, will set him off with some foolishness.”
“Won’t bet you there as I agree,” Sirius chuckled. He then sobered up and added, “Look, honestly? I can see part of where they’ll come from. They were probably worried sick about him for so long. Then we show back up and refuse to give answers, just saying he was fine like he had gone on a long holiday or something. It has to rankle slightly. Especially with as close as they were. Hell, I would want answers and end up upset over the ones we’ve given so far.”
“Despite what Molly and Arthur profess or think, Harry was not treated like their family, Sirius,” Remus added. “He spent part of one summer with them, that’s all. The rest had been done through letters while he was at school and his connection with Ron. That’s it. There was nothing more. I’m sure it may have ended up growing that direction if he had stayed around, but it wasn’t there when we left. They are not family and have no right to demand anything from him. The last summer he was here, not counting the one we absconded with him, he spent alone in Diagon Alley while they were in Egypt. Hermione wasn’t around him during the summers, just communicating in letters. We’ve seen those. While they were from a friend, they weren’t that close and she was the one who did all the talking.”
“You’re right,” Sirius conceded with a slow nod. “It’s also an item we may have to point out if it goes downhill with them. They won’t like it, but it’s the truth.”
“We can’t let them go too far down that path,” Remus schooled. “If we do, it’ll put all of us in danger. They are huge targets, as we all know. We are as well. What we don’t need is them dragging us into whatever or talking like we’re involved. This is tricky enough as is, we need no help making it worse.”
“Again, I agree,” Sirius sighed. “Look, I’m letting you take on that part, Remus. Not only have you had more contact with them than I have, but you’re more likely to pull off telling them whatever without it ending up a nightmare. Anything I would have to say would cause a mess. The same with Harry. He’s not said it, but we know him—he’ll unload all over plenty of people because of so much they let happen while he was here.”
“I have no issue taking it on and will, gladly,” Remus smiled, knowing what Sirius said was true. As he was around plenty when he would come into the country from time to time, he knew better who he was dealing with and had a feel for their personalities. “Just don’t allow yourself to end up drawn in. I’ll mention it to Harry as well.”
After a nod, Sirius snorted then grinned, “Are we ready for the adventure with the hair dye tonight? I know Harry says he won’t end up upset if you mess it up, but he works plenty hard to look as good as he does, so we don’t want to fuck it up.”
“As well as I can prepare,” Remus chuckled, shaking his head. “You saw the directions—they are fairly easy to follow and straight forward. Marissa also promised to send along a video tutorial of just what to do. It should help more than the directions. In the end, I’ll manage and it’ll look passable. It won’t look as professional as they have managed with him, but he’ll look nice.”
“This will end up a riot and I’m recording it on Harry’s phone,” Sirius laughed, yelping when Remus gave him a good-natured elbow in the ribs over it.
“I don’t need a visual reminder of the fumbling which will come, Sirius!” Remus told him, eyebrow going up.
“Moony the hair stylist,” Sirius snickered, moving away so he didn’t get another elbow. “We can’t let this go undocumented.”
With a long suffering sigh, Remus gave Sirius a shove towards the door then told him, “It’s just one more thing you can get a laugh at my expense over, Sirius. Admit it.”
“Well, true,” Sirius told him with a winning grin, though moving along. “And you would do the exact same thing if it was me, Remus!”
“Possibly,” Remus muttered, a small smile gracing his lips as they began moving towards the upstairs.
“Possibly my furry arse,” Sirius snorted, rolling his eyes. “You would and we both know it!” The laugh from this part did help, though. With the stress coming from all directions, or so it seemed, anything to break it up would help. This would manage quite nicely, for all of them.
“Here we have Moony taking his first steps as a professional hairdresser,” Sirius crowed, voice falsetto and containing a heavy lisp. Though not as well versed as Harry when it came to the functions on Harry’s phone, he was trying to work with the video recorder, though not being very successful. Oh, he had figured out how to take the video, but he was shaking so hard from suppressed laughter the phone was jiggling.
They were all parked in the kitchen, ready to start the adventure with the hair dye. As promised, Marissa had sent a very detailed video of just what to do. While it didn’t look hard and Harry knew how to go about this, it was the first time he and Remus had even made an attempt at anything like it, so it was bound to end up more complicated than it should.
Just as he was about to go on and describe what they were attempting, using the same narrative voice, of course, he yelped at the stinging hex which landed dead center on one thigh. “Watch that shit, Moony!” He stuttered, wincing at the sting and lowering the camera.
“Bring the phone over here, Sirius, I want to see the video again,” Remus told him, voice containing a heavy sigh. Everything was laid out, including the instructions which came with the kit, but he wanted to watch the video again.
As Sirius came over and pulled up the video, Remus gave Harry a soft rap on the head with his wand. “Hold still, Harry!” He huffed, rolling his eyes. While Harry wasn’t fidgeting all over, he was shaking from suppressed laughter at Sirius’ narrative and voice imitation. “This is hard enough as is, I don’t need you wiggling all over as well.”
“I’m trying,” Harry chuckled, shoulders still shaking. Already this was a riot and would probably end up funnier before it was over, knowing Sirius.
Sirius chuckled at the rap on the head then set the video to playing for Remus, stepping closer. As Remus watched, he peered around at all the goop on the table, something already mixed up then asked, snickering, “Are we sure this isn’t going to turn the highlights hot pink or something? That wouldn’t go well with what’s there, Harry.”
“I’m sure as I’m the one who mixed it up,” Harry chuckled, grinning and ensuring the cape they conjured was covering his clothes.
As he listened to Remus mutter about what to do, he suggested, “Start in the back at the bottom. What’s there can end up covered easily by the rest of my hair if it doesn’t turn out well. Doing it that way should give you a better start without the worry of it being seen like the rest.”
“A good suggestion I’ll take,” Remus told him distractedly with a nod as he finished watching the video and picked up the instructions.
When he finished, he handed the instructions to Sirius and said, “Do something useful rather than critique, Sirius, and hold these up for me so I can see them while I work.”
“Hey! You liked my critiquing and I need to video this.” Sirius laughed, though suspending them with a spell so Remus could easily see them then going back to getting ready to video this whole procedure. “And we need this recorded for posterity. No one would ever believe you’ve taken up doing hair in your spare time, Moony.”
With a heavy sigh and shake of his head, though liking how Sirius suspended the instructions so he could easily see them as he worked, Remus then thought he was ready to begin. With a shuddering sigh, he cast the spell from the directions to divide up Harry’s hair and separate what was already highlighted. Since it worked as it should, he then dipped his wand in the first bowl of paste-like substance and sucked it into his wand, via the instructions. Then, with a slightly trembling hand, he grasped one of the sections at the back of Harry’s head on the bottom and told them, “Here we go.” Eyes locked on the sheet, he began to apply the dye, hoping he had this right.
“And Moony has now officially become a hairdresser,” Sirius cackled, resorting back to the falsetto voice with a lisp. “He is applying the goop per the instructions. Though trembling, he seems like he’s doing this right.”
Then, just to get a laugh, he asked Harry, “Is it supposed to turn purple?” The color of the goop wasn’t, of course, but he had to have some fun.
After Harry stiffened up and started to stutter, Remus huffed then reached over and gave Sirius a rap on the head with his wand, one harder than he did with Harry. “Don’t panic him, Sirius! I need him to hold still. He won’t if you scare him.”
He then soothed Harry, “It’s not purple, Harry. Don’t listen to him. He’s just trying to tweak you. It’s the color the sheet says.”
After letting out a mock howl of pain, Sirius began laughing, going back to filming the thing, doing a running commentary of everything Remus was doing in the same voice, chuckling here and there.
With a snicker, Harry held still, planning to send the video to Marissa when they finished.
“This isn’t too complex,” Remus muttered as he finished up the first chunk of hair then stepped back to look at it. A glance at the instructions and pictures of what it should look like, he then gave a nod. It was just how it showed.
“I told you it wasn’t bad,” Harry told him, snickering as Sirius moved around to make sure he filmed everything, lisp becoming more pronounced.
With a roll of his eyes as Sirius covered everything like some kind of deranged reporter, he then shoved him out of the way so he could finish. “Just stay out of the way, Sirius. I don’t need you interfering so I end up making a mistake.”
“Just need to ensure I see it all,” Sirius assured him, though he stepped out of the way, still filming. “I can’t miss a thing, after all.”
“Merlin help all of us,” Remus grumbled, shaking his head then grasping the next chunk of hair he had to work on. This was going to end up an adventure and a half with Sirius hovering around. As he began working once more, he warned Sirius, “You get in the way, I’m turning your hair neon orange with purple polka dots! I swear I will, Sirius!”
“You wouldn’t dare,” Sirius said in his normal voice, lowering the camera and narrowing his eyes at Remus.
“Would you like to find out for sure?” Remus asked as he went to work, eyes flitting between the instructions and what he was doing.
“Could end up interesting to see, Sirius,” Harry chuckled, knowing Remus would if Sirius pushed him enough.
Harrumphing, Sirius made sure to step back so he wasn’t in the way. Oh yes, Remus would and would make damned sure to use a spell which would have to fade out over a couple of days and not one you could cancel. “It’s Harry’s hair you need to worry about, Moony. Leave mine out of it.”
“Get in my way and I’ll worry about yours then make sure Padfoot looks like an oversized French poodle the next time you shift. I might even include a nice pink bow and nail varnish if you interfere too much.”
“I am so taking pictures if you do it,” Harry laughed, relaxing plenty, not at all worried about Remus messing this up. It would go fine.
“If you do, I’ll exact revenge, I swear I will,” Sirius warned, though going back to filming and starting his commentary again.
“You never have nor ever will win a prank war with me, Sirius,” Remus told him distractedly, though smiling slightly.
“I would make it my mission in life to win this one, Remus,” Sirius warned, though making certain he stayed out-of-the-way.
“He’s more devious and crafty than you are, Sirius,” Harry reminded him, grinning as he listened in. “Not to mention sneaky. You are more overt about whatever.”
“Yeah, he’s a sneaky bastard, I’ll give him that,” Sirius conceded grudgingly.
“Hence the reason I’d win,” Remus imparted, smiling a little more.
“I’d give you a run for your money,” Sirius warned, zooming in to film Remus applying the goop just so then shifting to get a shot of the instructions to compare the two.
With a sigh, rolling his eyes as Sirius rattled on, Remus smiled just a little. This was normal for them and had been since they began their life together. It was just part of them having fun. As he knew what he was doing by now, or at least the basics and made a passable job of it, he was less stressed, thus able to joke around. It was going how he expected and said to Sirius earlier; something which would relieve stress and give them all a good time.
As he finished the part he had worked on and moved to the other, he joked more with Sirius, smiling as Harry chuckled while he listened. Yes, this would end up the normal riot with all of them having several good laughs before it was over, something they needed with the stresses going on. Tomorrow—well, they would once more deal with the stressful situation they found themselves in. Tonight they would just have some fun.
Still bantering and joking with Sirius, he pressed on with the job at hand, smile growing as they joked, he decided he would become very proficient at this job. It was something they could all ‘do’ together and have fun with. Just one more way of relieving stress and having fun.
Chuckling at some of Sirius’ more creative threats about what he would do for revenge, Remus smiled as he worked, listening to Harry laugh. Yes, he was enjoying the whole venture like they were, more than he thought he would. Good.
