Lucius Malfoy intended to show his son the agreement struck ages ago between his ancestors and the veela. He believed it might help him accept the truth.
It seemed his influence over his son disappeared somewhere between the Dark Lord's defeat and the present.
It was...liberating.
Lucius understood the root of his son's stubborn nature. He and his wife were heavily responsible for crafting an identify for their son; an identity that was an illusion, nothing more.
He carefully closed the book, staring into space.
Of course there was a time when Lucius would have applauded his son's decision to cling to tradition. Even now...
And his eyes drifted yet again towards the bedroom...
Even now he kept his own secrets.
But Draco had the advantage of youth, of an untainted reputation. He need not cling to the contraints of tradition.
In many ways he…envied his own child.
She perished, his own mate.
Because Lucius was proud, because he feared death, because at that time he thought ‘Better it be that only one of us die.’
He could smell her blood every time he remembered that day. It would be burned in his mind, an indelible mark. As it should.
Lucius chose to marry Narcissa, shortly after. It was an opportunistic match, and he exploited her feelings for him. He could never regret his choices. Narcissa gave him Draco.
And life went on.
Lucius was not one to dwell on unchangeable events. It was...amusing.
So many wizards and witches carried the misconception that their was but one mate for veela, and that they followed the other into death.
But he never completed the ritual, never even initiated it. He merely recognized the girl.
But he still felt the emptiness when she died. He understood that something of great importance had been lost...
This time he closed the book, quietly moving towards the part of his life he kept carefully hidden.
Part of it was due to a concern for safety. But the primary reason was that he was unable to break free from the shackles of his past.
Unlike his son, he dedicated most of his life to an ideal he was still unable to shed. Every day he was able to recognize the glaring similarties between himself and Lord Voldemort. Both were consumed by a lust for greatness...and both were concealing secrets that would oust them as hypocrites. Deceivers of the worse kind.
After all, the Dark Lord was a halfling. His blood was tainted.
Lucius did not even look to his left, where he slept.
Instead he entered the small room at the end of the hall.
There were two cribs, one each for his twin sons.
He toyed with the idea of introducing them as long-last nephews one day. But that was far off. Right now they were young enough to remain here, with their mother.
On his left, Caelum. He would have the same pale hair of his father. As would his brother.
To his right, Cepheus, sucked his thumb. Oblivious of the fact that their father was the kind man quite willing to go to any extreme to achieve what he wanted.
Both had the same green eyes as their mother…
If Narcissa ever discovered this location, he had no doubt that one of them would die. It was to her everlasting regret that she was only able to give him one child. He believed she understood, finally, that he would not love her back.
But she lived with regret. Wore it like a dirty badge.
Lucius did not allow regret to rule him. He made mistakes, but he learned from them, and did not make them again.
Once, in his youth, he allowed the death of his mate.
As an adult, he had been shocked to discover the instinct awaken for the first time in years.
This time he would intervene. He would merely keep her hidden. A secret, yes, but it afforded him the opportunity to live in both worlds--the one he chose and the one he rejected.
Turning, he quietly entered his bedroom, and watched her sleep.
No one would ever know that the 'dead' daughter of his hated enemy would be here, alive and well, in Lucius Malfoy's bed...
