A/N: I had a few moments of confusion, myself, in this chapter. I apologize if anyone is confused beyond the explination I gave in this chapter. Sometimes it's difficult to explain what I see in my head. ~^.^~ I try not to leave too many of those cliff hangers, but it was just so perfect last chapter. It may be a while before the next chapter, as I'm barely into chapter 16 and have only re-read 15 twice. I like to keep a minimum 3 chapters ahead.
Chapter 14: Shadows Revealed
“Theodore Nott.” Harry remained still; he remembered Draco telling him the Slytherin kept his opinions on Voldemort and the Dark to himself and made no comment to others. Draco also said Theo’s ancestor, Cantankerous Nott was the brains behind that pureblood family list, and how each generation seemed to be concerned with history. His words about his father being too biased made sense, as the man was currently a Death Eater.
Theodore, or Theo to those who are still his friends, removed the cloak. He smirked at the other, “A lot more knowledgeable than I thought, Potter. I trust you can keep this between us, as I would be in a lot of danger from some and bombarded by others for answers.”
“Call me Harry, and yeah I can, though I may have to tell one of my confidants. Don’t worry, this person can keep secrets really well. If you’re going to remain unbiased, why give me the information like you have? Not that I don’t appreciate it, but you make it sound like you’re supposed to stay out of it all and giving out information isn’t ‘staying out of it.’ Also, how do I know you won’t give this information out to others?”
Theo nodded, “If you’re certain they won’t say anything; I ask you not tell any of my Housemate’s though. They can keep secrets from many, but they’d still try to speak to me and that would catch a lot of attention. You can call me Theo when we meet in private, though I do ask you refer to me as ‘Shadow’ when I have my hood up. Of course, any conversations outside of this room would seem odd, you understand; addressing me at all would raise suspicions.
“You have valid concerns and questions. Remaining unbiased really is an impossibility for anyone. Even those who claim to be ‘neutral’ have their own opinions, they just don’t want to have to fight, and making their stance known would force them into the fight. I decided to approach you since I’ve noticed you not only accepting Slytherins but rarely counting on the Headmaster for things. I’m sure you’ve noticed the Headmaster has little favor for any Slytherin, even our Head of House, and as such allows certain things to go unpunished that if places were switched, the perpetrators would be handled harshly.” Harry nodded and Theo continued, “What you don’t realize is that if the Headmaster knew you were befriending Slytherins he would force you to change your mind. While I don’t know how he can manage that, and for all his ‘claims’ to want school unity, he would rather Slytherin House be isolated from everything. I do have to ask what you plan towards Slytherin House, personally; I won’t include this in the books if you’d rather not have it known.”
“Alright, for right now let’s keep all of this out of the books.” He waited until Nott nodded, “First I have no real qualms against Slytherin House, and I only have issue with people who have problems with me. I’ve decided against relying on the Headmaster because there is so much that never added up as to why things happened, especially since he’s supposed to be ‘all knowing’ and ‘powerful’. I also know for a fact he would do as you think, try and make me change in attitude towards the Slytherins; he’s already done it once this year that I’m aware of, probably more that have failed because of the precautions I now take. I noticed the change in behavior from one day to the next with the only difference in routine being that I had tea with the Headmaster. Apparently it was a Compulsion potion that he used to influence me to despise anything Slytherin. I was meeting a Slytherin that day, and found myself angry at them for meeting with me, when I had arranged it previously. Luckily he was able to discover what the problem was and knew how to get the antidote. Who knows how many times it has been done in the past, and I was just too young and not ready for change to notice much difference. Now, how about you answer some of my questions?” Harry looked pointedly at Nott, who nodded.
“Fair enough. While I don’t support the ‘Light’ side’s fight to fully embrace all things Muggle, I don’t believe in the ‘pureblood’ tripe that the ‘Dark’ side is spewing. I’ve been trained by my great-Uncle, as I said, and as such I know the true history of our kind. I cannot accept the killing of what is essentially ‘lost’ relatives because of some feeling disgust at what was, essentially, their own family’s bad choices. You do know how Squibs are essentially brought about?”
Harry gave a single nod, “I have a basic understanding; essentially it is caused by many years of inbreeding, causing the connection between a wizard and his core to thin until it is no longer strong enough.”
“That is the basic, yes. Do you understand why inbreeding causes the connection to weaken?”
Harry shook his head so Theo explained, “If you held parchment in the wind and let it go, it would fly away. No matter how much parchment you had, it would still fly away; however if you added a string to the parchment that anchored it to the ground, it would keep the parchment there.” Harry nodded, showing he was following.
“If you added more parchment to a thin string, either the string would snap or the parchment would tear away. Essentially that’s what you have; parchment representing family blood, string representing the connection to magic. The outside bloodline that is introduced is like a thicker string or material that wraps around the first string, making it a stronger connection. Sometimes, more parchment is added however if there is enough string or coating, it won’t make a difference. Or, in terms of magic and bloodline, after enough outside breeding has been done, a single case of inbreeding won’t snap the connection. However if inbreeding once again continues, the connection is no longer strong enough. Now say that the string is snapped, connected to the paper, and you have a string that connects to it, a case of two Squibs becoming a family. It may not be able to reach the ground string, or the connection to magic, but the connection is just a bit stronger. If this offspring connected to a wizard, or in the example, a string and parchment connected to the ground, their strings would combine and their offspring may have connection to magic. I say ‘may’ because if there is too much inbreeding, the offspring’s connection my not be strong enough.”
“Okay, let me ask you then, why do some have more magic than others? There’s reports of some wizards or witches not being as ‘magically strong’ as other people.”
Theo nodded, “That in a sense has to do with inbreeding. While a single case of inbreeding does not cause the connection to break, the amount of magic flowing along the connection is not as much. Sometimes just having one or two generations of ‘new’ blood does not help, unless the new ‘strand’ is thicker to begin with. Say for example you have two Squibs that are many generations down from the first Squib that was disowned by the family. In all that time, not one of their ancestors ‘intermingled’ with their own bloodline, or each generation was a fresh bloodline. So now you have two Squibs that have a nice, solid strand. Each offspring is connected to magic, however if the bloodline has too much inbreeding, or parchments, the first brush of magic, or wind in the example, causes the connection to break. However the offspring of these two Squibs have not only a solid connection, but instead of a string it is a rope. More magic can flow through the rope, thus making the offspring magically stronger.”
“So to make sure I understand,” Harry tilted his head, “in the analogy wind is magic, string is the connection to the core, the ground is the core, and parchment represents the same bloodline. Each offspring of a relationship has its own connection, but the thickness is represented by one strand for each different bloodline?” Theo nodded, so Harry continued. “However if it was the same bloodline, in the analogy more parchment would be added, yet the string would stay the same?” Again Theo nodded.
“So each new bloodline twines string together, making the connection stronger. If there was enough ‘strings’ it could make such a thick connection that more magic could be used? Wouldn’t the parchment, or bloodlines, still cause a problem?”
Theo chuckles, “I admit, it isn’t the best analogy, but it is something that is difficult to explain. Just know that the farther away the bloodline from the main family, the stronger the connection to magic gets.”
Harry nodded, “What do you know of the other magical Realms?”
“Any particular one? There are many, some that are violent, some passive, some welcoming and some not. I’m sure I am aware of more Realms than you, and I do not mean that to be snide. It is just that I have had my whole life to read and familiarize myself with this knowledge.”
“Well I am just starting to read about them; an estimation, how many do you know exist?”
Theo sat back, “An estimation of what I know, 10. Before we get into that, I need to ask, how do you believe the Wizarding world and the Muggle world connect?”
Harry blinked, “Er…I was under the impression they were just separated by muggle-repelling wards.”
Theo gave a small smile, “Sadly I’m sure that’s what everyone else believes, too. What they don’t realize is that it is called the Wizarding world and Muggle world for a reason. They are, in fact, two separate worlds, or Realms.” He chuckles as Harry’s eyes widened.
“Wait, why is it we run the risk of exposure if we fly over certain areas?”
Theo shook his head, “This is going to be a long explanation, but I’ll try. At one point in history, around the early 5th century I believe, the Wizarding Realm was opened to the Muggle Realm by many wizards. The ley lines are actual points where the portals are continuously held open, anchoring both worlds together; because it’s been that way for so long, to close them now would take a large amount of magical power. The reason we are told not to fly over certain areas is because this would become too apparent, that where we are expecting to arrive is not where we are. Along with that, several small portals are set up in areas with anchoring stones surrounded by muggle-repelling wards.” He noticed Harry’s confused look and sighed. “I am not too familiar with locations in the Muggle realm, but I’ll try to give an example. If you were to fly from Muggle London in the direction of Hogwarts, you would never reach Hogwarts…unless you went through the portal.”
“Wait,” Harry shook his head, “in second year Ron and I took his dad’s flying car and made it to Hogwarts.”
Theo raised an eyebrow curiously; that sounded interesting. “Did you go through a tunnel? How did you find the train?”
“Well we followed the tracks from the sky and yeah, we followed it through a tunnel.” Harry didn’t want to go into much detail about it; he didn’t want to get Mr. Weasley in trouble for something.
Theo nodded, “Usually portals are disguised as tunnels; only the presence of magic allows one to go through it into the other Realm. It’s why a non-magical train going through the same area would continue on as they would. You wouldn’t feel any difference unless you were trying to; it’s the same as most wards. Your body and magic get used to the feeling after continuous use and barely recognizes it unless you actively think about noticing it. As young as we are when we first experience this, at 11, it gives our body the chance to adapt. However if you were to fly a broom or a magical animal from one magical point to another, you wouldn’t be in the non-Magical side.” He huffed still seeing the disbelieving look on Harry’s face, “I can tell unless you do this for yourself you won’t believe me. Haven’t you ever wondered if Muggles fly in those…plain things…?”
“Airplanes.”
“Those, why they couldn’t see something as big as most Wizarding locations. Especially those in secluded locations that aren’t warded against muggles because they aren’t actively nearby? It’s not because they are careless, but because there are no portals nearby and they are in the Wizarding Realm.” Theo shook his head, “Look, let’s move on; this is something that you’ll just have to experience I guess.” He thought a moment, “So we were discussing the Realms; the Wizarding Realm has portals that connect to each Realm at different locations, however many of them are closed. Some are partially active so that anyone with enough magic and the right spell can get through; that goes both ways. Some are shut tightly and will require a great force to open them again. Now one thing to keep in mind is each Realm has…sub-worlds where certain species reside. One of the biggest examples is the Demon Realm. You have the Demonic World that connects to another World, the Angelic. Each World subsequently has what has often been referred to as tiers. It’s actually like another dimension inside of their world, like how wizard-space makes an area larger on the inside than the out. Its unique in how it all connects, makes one think differently how a world is, really…”
Harry smirked and snapped his fingers. Theo blinked and looked at Harry, “You were starting to space out. Hermione gets that look sometimes when she’s explaining something that leads to other ideas and thoughts. Sometimes she starts muttering about a completely separate topic and rushes off to look up something, forgetting what she was doing altogether.”
“Ah yes, well, in this case each Realm can consist of many different worlds of many different beings, though accessed through one portal. It’s not as simplistic as it sounds when you first read about them; I first pictured them as little marbles existing in their own space with a string attaching each. The real thing is like several rings over lapping and joining in one large mass, which can then be connected to other large masses of similar nature by a string. Each ring can also be connected by strings, though some connect directly like how our world is currently connected to the Muggle world.”
Harry shook his head, “This is all very confusing.” He was more of a visual learner, and trying to picture it was making it worse.
“It is, here…” Theo conjured a thin circle of green, the then had a circle of orange and a circle of purple. The green and orange connected in several locations, essentially overlapping, but the purple seemed to surround them. “Imagine the green and orange lines are the Wizarding and Muggle world, respectively. Where they connect is where the ley line portals are, causing the two to intersect.” He connects a light blue line from the green to the purple, “The blue line is how a portal would normally connect worlds. Imagine the purple line is the Fey Realm. They have never tried to connect to the Muggle Realm, and refused a more direct connection to the Wizarding Realm than a normal portal. As such, the only connection wizards ever have with the Fey is through a portal that is closed; I am not sure if it is completely shut or if with the right magic and spell one could travel through it. I suspect there are the forgotten portals which we call ‘fairy rings’, which is why a wizarding child can be lost to the fey as the stories say. Understand so far?”
Harry nodded, yes it was much easier to see this way. “So the others?”
Theo rearranged the rings to where the green barely touched the orange and purple, with a thin strand of light blue between each, each able to connect to the other. To Harry it looked like a pyramid with two at the bottom and one on top.
“Most Realms will be situated like this; in some fashion. Each able to connect by a portal, but none so securely entwined as the Muggle and Wizarding Realms are.” Theo flicked his wand and a white, black, and dark blue ring seemed to float between the others, none touching solidly, though thanks to Theo turning the image, Harry can see how the new colors encircle the others, yet never actually touch. “Other Realms will also be available, and while it may look like they entwine, they connect by portals only.”
“So, wouldn’t it be less confusing to say each Realm is really a different dimension that these portals connect to? I mean, Muggles have traveled into space and they don’t see all these other Realms floating around.”
Theo cocked his head to the side, “If that helps you understand it better, I suppose. Yes, I can see how using the term dimension may make it easier, in a way. Going along with that, I’m sure you can understand how there can be many of them, perhaps some we are not aware of.”
Harry nodded, “Right. So what exactly is it that you want of me?” He needed to focus back on the now, all this discussion of other worlds, realms, and dimensions was just confusing him and he had forgotten the reason he was abducted in the first place. Right, and free period would be ending soon, too.
“Oh!” Theo actually blushed; he had forgotten and got caught up in explanations of other things. “I was hoping to aid you in getting the truth out, anonymously of course. I don’t support He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, though I don’t support Dumbledore’s views either. He wants to let the Muggles in full stop and that is dangerous for us. If I had to give an opinion, I’d say we need to close those ley line portals and re-establish communications with the other Magical realms. However I’m just a history recorder, only someone with a lot of power, in name and magic, could hope to achieve that.”
Harry thought about it, and it seemed like a good opinion. “I would have to discuss this with others, ‘Shadow’, however I do see the merits of cutting off such an open connection to the Muggle world. I don’t think we should completely cut off; it would be best to keep an eye on their advancements. I mean, Muggles can fly without magic, their technology is remarkable; perhaps they will discover the portals on their own one day and if we were unaware they were reaching that point we’d be blindsided. But I do agree interactions must be cut down considerably; and Dumbledore’s idea is hazardous. How can I contact you without raising suspicion? You obviously don’t want anyone else to know who you are.”
Theo pulls out a small black lacquered box with a silver stamped image of an open book on the cover. “Write your question or meeting request on parchment and place it in here. I have one that I keep in my trunk. Keep it secured and don’t put my name on anything; I’ll still get my messages to you the same way I have been and no, I won’t tell you how I am doing that. Perhaps someday, but not right now. Don’t worry, I have no intention of revealing who is in your group to anyone; that would lead suspicion back to me and blow my cover. Not something I want.”
Harry nodded, Theo was a Slytherin and wouldn’t jeopardize his own safety to leak out information. “Alright; I need to go, not only is my free period almost done, but I’m sure Ron and/or Hermione is looking for me.”
“I thought you told them I would meet with you.”
Harry smirked, “I did, however they were determined to stick with me closely because they were worried you had harmful intentions.”
Theo nodded, “Very well,” he pulls up his hood and the ambiguous voice now takes over his normal tone, “until we meet again, Harry.”
Harry nodded and left the room; he barely closed the door when he heard angry hissing to his left. He walks over to the image and sees Valis.
“Hatchling you are in trouble! Master and the dark man have been searching for you after the red and curly haired friends said you were missing.”
“Sorry Valis, where is the dark man; I’m sure Salazar would rather me go to him first.” Harry heard some echoing footsteps and wondered if Severus was on his way instead.
“Master heard me speak to you, as we are always connected no matter how far our paintings; he sent the dark man this way.”
