Chapter 14: 20 Years Later
“You put your trunk in, all good?” asked Draco Malfoy when his son, Scorpius, once again appeared in the doorway of one of the carriages.“Yeah, in the same room with Logus Zabini,” said Scorpius nodding excitedly. “He’s already there, so I think I should get going too!”
Astoria smiled. “All right, dear.” She stepped forward, hugged her son and kissed him on a cheek.
“Mum!” groaned Scorpius and shifted his head away from her.
Astoria let out a chuckle. “Be good, okay?” she said and pulled back. “I love you! See you soon,” she kissed her fingers and waved her son goodbye.
As soon as Scorpius disappeared, Astoria faced Draco.
“I’ve got to get back to work,” she said expressionlessly. “I guess I’ll see you at Christmas?”
Draco gave a curt nod. “Yeah,” he muttered, and Astoria, after responding in a nod as well, turned on her heel and vanished into the crowd.
Draco looked back at the train which began to move. In one of the windows, he saw Scorpius’ face, grinning and waving. Draco, too, raised his arm in farewell and, like many other people, walked alongside the train, trying to keep the sight of kids’ faces for as long as possible.
Malfoy could still make out the white head of his son, but the train was about to round a corner when Draco accidentally bumped into the back of a lady. Since he had still been walking with his eyes pinned on the train, he didn’t notice that woman in front of him halt.
“Oh,” Draco gasped and winced, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay,” said the lady and turned around, holding her hand in the air apologetically.
Draco’s heart made a powerful thump against his ribs and shot up into his throat, fluttering. He raised his eyebrows for a second and swallowed dryly.
“Oh,” spoke Hermione surprised, and her eyebrows climbed up on her forehead.
Only after it happened did Draco realize he let a faint smile crawl on his lips. He cleared his throat and raised one eyebrow.
“Granger.”
“Malfoy.”
He watched Hermione bite on her bottom lip, evidently trying to hold back a smirk.
Draco took a deep breath to pull himself together and broke the awkward staring contest to look around.
“Where’s Ron?” he asked.
Hermione shrugged.
“He’s with Hugo in his apartment.” When Draco mildly furrowed his brows, she added, “Hugo, my son. He’s nine.”
Draco lifted his chin in understanding and mouthed a mute “Oh.” Still, the phrase “in his apartment” didn’t slip past his ears, and he understood.
Hermione smiled for a second, but then her face transformed into a frown when some passer-by bumped into her shoulder. Only then Draco realized they were standing in the middle of a moving crowd. He tugged on Hermione’s sleeve.
“Let’s step aside,” he said and led Hermione away to an empty corner.
Hermione leaned against a wall and Draco stood in front of her. They locked their eyes together.
“So,” Draco began and rocked a little on his heels with hands in his pockets, “you’re here alone?”
“I am,” she smirked again. “Though it seems that so are you.”
“That’s true,” he confirmed and nodded. “Astoria, my ex-wife, left a minute ago.”
Draco saw Hermione’s forehead twitch as she struggled to not let her face convey shock. He expected her to ask something about Astoria being his ex, but, to his surprise, she didn’t.
“I see,” was what she said, and red patches sprang up her cheeks.
Draco gazed at the beautiful woman in front of him for the first time after the Battle of Hogwarts. He had seen Hermione before in papers, but since he was wealthy without a need to work and rarely went to places like the Ministry, he never actually met Hermione in years. Nonetheless, his heart always fluttered for a moment whenever he got to accidentally see the woman’s face.
“How are you?” he asked after a minute of strangely pleasant silence.
“Good, and you?”
“Very fine.”
It had been years since he saw her, yet it didn’t feel like that much time at all. Draco felt old, yet now, looking at someone he so deeply cared for in the past, he felt young again.
“I’m glad,” she grinned lightly. “Did you come here with your kids or—?”
“Yes, my son, Scorpius. It’s his first year.”
“Aw! Same as my Rose.”
Draco responded with a smile, and they silently gazed at each other again, sometimes pulling their eyes off one another to watch the last people leave the Platform and then returning the gaze back. Hermione clung tighter onto her purse.
“Malfoy,” she said, tilting her head to the left, “pinning me against a wall… good old times, huh?”
Her cheeks were blossoming in heat and she had a slightly smug expression on her face, and although she was flustered, she also seemed rather calm and comfortable.
Draco made a little smirk and swallowed.
“Good times indeed.”
Hermione chuckled and bowed her head as though trying to hide her blush. She always blushed at Draco, but it was even more charming to see a grown woman embarrassingly flush scarlet.
“Granger,” said Draco and stretched one arm to lean on the wall, “what are you doing now? Do you think we could go and grab something to drink? Coffee?”
Hermione raised her head back up to him, still blushing and smiling.
“Sure.”
Draco bit on his inner cheek to hold back his excitement and straightened up, allowing Hermione step beside him.
As the couple was walking out of the Platform 9¾, Draco let his fingers brush against hers by her side, and their index and middle fingers lightly curled around each other’s. From a corner of his eye, he watched Hermione nibble on her lip and her cheeks twitch as she put a lot of effort to not allow herself to beam like a schoolgirl, and Draco knew, for the first time in his life, he was doing the right thing.
The End
That’s it! Pretty short, pretty fun.
I actually never planned to add this last brief chapter, but I thought it wouldn’t be fair to finish the story of Dramione with such a (inevitably) sad sad ending, so I added a bit of hope here, even though it doesn’t exactly match the original HP Epilogue. I left some space for imagination, too. :)
I hope you enjoyed my first attempt on fan fiction. Let me know what you think, and thanks for reading!
