“So” Remus said as he and Severus sat in his sitting room. Tonks and Hermione were shopping for a wedding dress leaving them to do whatever it was they chose to do “How’s the card game going?”
“It’s…enlightening” Severus answered “I won’t betray her trust but I am learning more about her than I thought was possible”
“Molly put it together?” Remus asked.
“Apparently” Severus said “I think I’m going to try to convince her to put the cards in to circulation for couples that are having troubles”
“Would you mind terribly if I were to borrow them when you guys are done?” Remus asked “I have a few things that I need to know about Tonks”
“Like what?” Snape asked with a laugh “She’s an open book”
“I think she’s been lying about taking the birth control potion” Remus admitted “And there’s some other things that I don’t want to talk about right now”
“Bad enough to lead to divorce?” Severus asked, hating himself for actually being concerned for his *gag* friends marriage.
“Maybe” He said “I don’t know” He looked a little lost “She’s been so secretive recently…I think that she’s cheating on me”
“I don’t think so” Severus said.
He wanted to continue on but they heard the telltale sounds of the two women entering the office and seconds later Tonks and Hermione walked in. Hermione made her way over to Remus, hugged him and then sat next to Severus, she smiled at him sweetly. Now that he looked at Tonks he realized she did look different, she was paler than normal with dark circles around her eyes. She smiled weakly at Remus and told him that she was going to lay down and Severus saw him frown before he excused himself and followed his wife out of the sitting room. Severus wasn’t usually one to push for information but something was going on and he could see that his fiancée knew more and he wanted to know what was going on.
“What’s happening?” He asked and she looked at him with a frown.
“It’s their business” She said but her bottom lip quivered slightly and her eyes were telling a different story.
“Come here” Severus said pulling her down on his lap so that he could look her in the face “Tell me what’s going on because Remus thinks that she’s cheating on him”
“She’s not” Hermione insisted “She’s…she’s…sick”
“Sick?” He repeated “What kind of sick?” Hermione’s face crumpled and she buried her face in to his chest sobbing “What kind of sick, Hermione?”
“The incurable kind” She answered around her sobs.
“Here” He handed her a calming draft which she took “Tell me what’s going on”
“She told me that she noticed it two or three months ago” Hermione explained “She was getting really tired, she thought it was because of Teddy. She tried Pepper-Up potions but they stopped working, she started to bruise easily…in all honesty it sounds like cancer but she’s been to three different Healers at Saint Mungo’s and two muggle doctors” She wiped a few tears away “They don’t know what it is”
“I understand” Severus said pulling her against him and let her cry out her sadness and then allowed her to leave when she chose to. He knew that she hated to be seen after crying because she thought she was ugly. He stood and walked to his Floo network sighing heavily and stepping in to the Headmasters office.
“Severus, my boy” The old man greeted “What brings you here?”
“You know Lupins wife is sick, right?” Severus assumed.
“I do” He looked sad “I have sent her to the best Healers I can think of and still…nothing”
“I want to help” He said “And given my background with Healing I think I can”
“I think you could too” Albus said “But it’s not my place to give you her personal medical information”
“So what do you suggest?” Snape asked.
“Talk to her” Albus said “Tell her that you noticed she’s been looking a little under the weather and give her the opportunity to tell you the truth”
“And if she doesn’t?” He asked.
“I have already urged her to talk to you” Albus said “But you, Severus, are not the most approachable man” Snape sniffed and stood up.
“Thank you, Albus” He said stiffly.

It was days later that Severus finally got his chance to talk to Tonks. She was sitting outside in the sun with her face turned towards the sky with a sad smile on her face. When she heard him she looked over at him and smiled again, the memory of picking on him over the summer when he was going to go on his first date with Hermione came to her mind. That made her wonder if the law would still be standing when her own Teddy was old enough to get married and then that made her wonder if she would be alive to see his wedding. She lowered her face to the ground and tried to control her breathing, she was getting weaker by the day. It was almost as if she could feel herself dying and she didn’t know what to do. She needed to tell Remus and soon, if she was going to die then she needed to know that he was going to be taken care of and that he was going to be able to take care of Teddy. She needed to write up her magical Will to make sure that the ministry didn’t attempt to take her son away from Remus.
“I’m not going to lie to you” Severus said as he walked over to her “I know that you’re sick”
“How…” She smiled “Hermione told you, hmm?” She laughed when he looked sheepish “I’m not mad…I have neither the time nor the energy to be mad”
“I think I can help you” He said “But I need some medical history”
“What do you want to know?” She asked.
“Why don’t we talk in my office” He suggested “Hermione is meeting with Molly and Narcissa to go over wedding plans so I won’t see her for a while”
“Probably not” She agreed “When is the wedding again?”
“April tenth” He sighed “Come on” He helped her off her bench and led her back in the castle and to his office.
“Four months away” She pointed out “Are you ready?”
“No” He admitted “I keep feeling like I’m going to mess something up and she’s going to realize that I’m old and ugly and she’s going to run for the hills, just like any normal woman would”
“You sound just like Remus did when I admitted my feelings for him” Tonks laughed “But I made him see that I love him”
“You need to tell him, you know?” Severus said when they got to his office door and he was waving his wand to remove the charms on it “If he finds out on his own he’s going to be really hurt”
“I know” She sighed “But it’s not like I can walk up and say ‘hey, I’m probably not going to be around to see Teddy grow up…have a good life’ its…much harder”
“If you said it like that it would be a little cold” Severus admitted “Come on, get in the office”
He followed her in to his office and closed the door behind him. Neither he or Tonks saw the man standing in the corner, Remus had come to talk to Severus but instead be found his wife entering his office and the two of them talking about her leaving him and Teddy. No wonder Severus didn’t seem to believe that she was cheating on him, she was sleeping with him and Snape didn’t want him to find out. This was what he got for trusting someone, he shouldn’t have listened to Molly when she pestered him about going on a date with Tonks. He shouldn’t have had sex with her and gotten her pregnant and he shouldn’t have fallen in love with her. But years of betrayal, hatred and shunning taught him how to put up barriers around his heart quickly.
“So” Severus said as he sat down across from Tonks with some tea for them both “When did you first notice that you were sick?”
“I don’t really know” She answered “About a year ago I started to feel a little more tired than usual and had some aches and pains. I thought that the tiredness was from running around after Teddy so much and that the aches and pains were from sleeping in the wrong position or stress”
“Okay” He said writing out what she said “And then what?”
“And then” She said “Three months ago Teddy threw a block at me. Not hard and on top of that it was one of those little wooden blocks, it really just tapped my leg but I had a bruise there” She shook her head “I’d bump in to the wall or trip and get bruises…it looked like Remus was beating me” She sighed “I started to get sick really easy everything from catching colds to full on sicknesses”
“Were they easily cured by potions?” He asked.
“At first” She said “But the more I got sick the more I had to use the potions and they started to not work”
“Did you get addicted to the potions at all?” He asked her.
“No” She answered “I stopped taking them when I realized that they wouldn’t work. I started to try to work on my immune system, tried muggle remedies and then I went to the Healers”
“What did they say?” He was curious what they could make of this sort of sickness.
“They didn’t know” She answered “I have seen a bunch of Healers and even some muggle healers but they don’t know what’s wrong with me”
“That narrows it a bit then” Severus said and she looked confused.
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“Well” He said “If the muggles knew what it was or could even find some sort of explanation to what is going on than it would be a muggle disease and harder to find a cure for but it’s a magical one” He smiled “Might be easier for me to cure”
“Yeah” She looked skeptical “Then again…if finding cures for magical sicknesses was as easy as you are claiming, why isn’t there a cure for Lycanthropy yet?”
“You’re right” He sighed “I’m sorry” They sat in silence for several minutes just staring at each other, Tonks didn’t dislike Severus she just didn’t approve of the way he treated people therefor she generally avoided him. But even she knew that he was brilliant and so she was trusting him completely.
“Please” She said suddenly with fear filling her eyes “Tell me you’re going to find a cure…tell me I’ll be able to see Teddy grow up”
“No” He said “I won’t make a promise I can’t keep” She lowered her head “I can promise to try to heal you”
“That’s all I can ask for then” She lowered her head again and he heard her sniffling. Giving in to a more basic instinct Severus pulled her over and hugged her tightly letting her know that he was there for her. All the while he comforted her he hated himself for being such a sucker for crying women, he hated tears and it made him feel all…protective.
A/N: So…tell me what you think. I rewrote this a few times, once where Tonks was indeed cheating on Remus with someone. One where she and Snape spent the night together weather in the past or not I didn’t get that far and then one where she went out on a raid for work and was killed. But I’m liking her (for once) in my story and decided that instead of giving Hermione and Snape anymore obstacles to get by (as if they needed more) I would give them something that would push them together.
