Chapter 13
After telling Hank yet another story about some higher placed contacts in various areas, Lucius settled back looking smug. However, internally, he was snarling slightly. Like so much else when it came to impressing Hank and getting things moving in the direction he wanted, it hadn't worked. Hank had the same expression he always did and hadn't seemed the least impressed or asked questions like so many others. This meant it didn't work. Since what he pulled out usually ended up with those he was trying to coax into something moving in the direction he wanted, Lucius was now at a loss as to what else to try. What he just pulled out was the furthest he ever had to push. Now he didn't know what to try. He had even dropped overt hints about what he wanted. The man hadn't risen to the bait there either. All of this left him huffing like a spoiled child who didn't get their way, internally of course.
Lucius ensured what he was feeling didn't show on his face, then inquired, “You'll have more of what I need next week? And is there any status update on the trinkets I hope to acquire?” He knew both, of course, but wanted to spend more time with Hank before he had to leave. Tonight would be busy and unpleasant in some ways, though he would enjoy most of it plenty.“The ingredients I'll have, no problem,” Hank told him, trying not to sound as bored as he felt. “The other area—I'm trying. I think I have a supplier. Let me see what happens. I'll have an update for you next time you come.”“Please do,” Lucius told him, a pleasant look on his face. “I've searched high and low for those objects. You're the only person I've asked who has told me they might be able to procure them. I'll be most grateful and will compensate you handsomely.”“I'll do what I can,” Hank assured him, he just wanted the egotistical prat out of his office. Lucius was growing worse to stomach with each visit. He wasn't sure how much more he could take of the prattle and hints about becoming his lover before he did something rash. It was something he would keep trying to tolerate, though. Lucius was the sort of man who you didn't cross if you could at all help it. While Hank knew he could hold his own with most anyone, he didn't want to end up in that position. Even if it wasn't a battle, he was sure there would be issues of other kinds. Oh, he had plenty on Lusty Luci, but didn't want to have to use it. He'd rather it just stay like it was with the hints dropped. When his expensive pocket watch chimed the top of the hour, Lucius pulled it out and glanced at the time then sighed. While he knew the time, he wanted to impress Hank once more with a show of his wealth to prove he could take care of him properly since this watch was easily worth five times the one Hank wore on his wrist. Then he let out a groan and shook his head before standing, making sure he had his gloves and cane, saying, “I do have to go. Urgent matters require my attention before the day is out. I look forward to our next meeting.”Though Hank straightened up, he didn't stand. “I'll be here,” Hank nodded, happy the arse was leaving. After ensuring he had what he came for was tucked discreetly away in his robes so no one could see them he then tipped a nod to Hank before making his way to the door. Once there, he paused, one hand on the knob then turned and looked at the man he wanted desperately then said, “Just a—caution, if you will, from me; I would shut up shop for the night just before dusk. Ensure you're out of Hogsmeade after you do. You don't want to stay here late tonight. There's some big goings on with the town and castle.”“Thanks,” Hank said, not letting on he might know what Lucius meant, though his mind was working over the implications of what was said at supersonic speed.“I wouldn't want anything to happen to you, after all,” Lucius smirked, knowing this could work well for him when Hank realized what he had protected him from. Then, after another nod, he vanished out the door, shutting it softly behind him.Hank waited until the wards signaled Lucius had left, then he stiffened up and told Yama, already reaching for parchment and a quill, “This is one Sirius needs to know about. I'm sending you because you can get there faster and he'll know what it means. Not only do I need you to fly as fast as you can so they have plenty of warning, but I need you to wait for a response from Sirius. Don't let anyone but Sirius touch the letter.”As Hank heard a determined hiss from his companion, he quickly scribbled out all he could of the bit from before Lucius left, telling Sirius he needed this to sound like it came from someone else. He also added he was locking down the shop quickly and protecting himself. Then he handed it over to Yama. Watching the bird take flight with a thunderclap, Hank stood and began to work with the wards. He had one more appointment, something he would take on since it would be a quick in and out thing, but then he was closing. He would also talk to old Costello, the man who rented the shop space out front, to make sure he closed early. Yeah, he was going to protect his assets the best he could because he doubted whatever was coming would mean anything good.
There was something of a mini Order meeting going on that evening, with about a dozen members attending. Hank's information had proven fruitful in that they could piece it together with information gleaned from sources in the Ministry. It was most certainly helpful.
As Sirius sipped his beer and paid attention, he was startled by the sound of large flapping wings and a now familiar hiss heard coming towards the kitchen. While owls weren't uncommon, though they tried to limit the amount to stay unobtrusive, he knew this wasn't an owl, but Yama. Just as he was standing, hearing most questioning the odd noise, Yama flapped in and landed on the table. The bird immediately looked around, hissing evilly at everyone there, then started walking in his direction. Gut clenching slightly and heart starting to hammer faster, Sirius had a sinking feeling nothing good would come of this, that it meant something huge.Everyone stood quickly and backed away from the table, especially when the bird looked at them, hissing malevolently. Remus had stood and moved back towards the counters, eyes wide, then asked, “What is that?” His wand was out and ready in case there was a problem. From the look and sound of that bird, there might well be. No one they knew had a bird like this one, so he had no clue where it came from.“That's Yama, that is,” Dung said, moving as far away from the evil bird as he could, cringing when the creature looked at him.“Your contact's bird?” Albus asked, staying as far away from the beast as he could as he wasn't sure what this meant.“Yeah, he's Hank's,” Sirius confirmed with a nod, eying the parchment the bird had a hold of.“Hey, Yama,” he then said in his normal voice, addressing the creature. “Is that for me?” He asked, summoning a beer and glass then pouring it for the bird. After another glance around and a warning hiss to those in the room, Yama made his way towards Sirius then dropped the parchment in front of him. Glaring around, the bird hissed again.Sirius watched everyone back up more at the hiss then took the parchment. As he opened it, he said to Remus, “Grab the beef jerky.” Then he began to read, eyes widening as he did.Remus kept an eye on the malevolent bird that was drinking the beer as he summoned the beef jerky they had then tossed it to Sirius, not wanting to chance going closer as he wasn't sure what the bird would do. “What's in the letter, Sirius?” He asked, seeing a startled and troubled look on Sirius' face.“From the sound of it, something big is happening in Hogsmeade tonight,” Sirius told everyone distractedly. Then he relayed what Hank wrote before adding, “And we need to make this sound like we received the tip some other way. He doesn't want it out there that he told us.”“Does he say where he heard the information?” Albus asked, not venturing closer as he wasn't sure the bird would like it if he did.“Lucius Malfoy,” Sirius told everyone, looking up from the parchment. He then tossed Yama a couple slices of the jerky. Of course the bird caught it deftly, eating it.At the mention of Lucius' name, Albus had a grave look on his face. He then glanced at Kingsley and Tonks, both of whom were wide-eyed and said, “You need to relay this. We'll come up with some way we found out, though I'm not sure how. It needs to go to the Ministry so they can help.”“We'll come up with something,” Kingsley nodded. “Aberforth is a good one. He'll say he overheard and we can protect Hank.”“I'll send a message off to him and to ensure he knows something big is coming,” Albus assured them. Then he shooed them off to the Ministry to start. He made a move to take a seat, but after a hiss from the bird, whose head whipped in his direction as he did, he decided against it, staying right where he was. He then asked, “Anything else we need to know?”“Nothing,” Sirius told him after rereading the letter. “He gave us all he could.” Then, summoning a parchment and quill, he started to write a response. As he did, he told everyone, “Hank's taking the advice and getting out as soon as he's able.”“Smart move,” Arthur agreed, staying right where he was plastered to the wall, not wanting to deal with that bird.Sirius quickly finished his response then rolled it up. After tossing Yama another slice of jerky, he held the parchment out for him to take. “Give this to Hank. And make sure he stays safe.”Giving Sirius another hiss after finishing the jerky and taking a drink of beer, Yama then took the letter. With another glare around at all those there and a hiss, he took off, wings making a loud thunderclap, as he soared out to get back to Hank.“That bird is bloody frightening,” Ron stammered from where he was against the wall, having made sure Hermione was safely behind him.“He is,” Sirius chuckled, looking around at everyone. “You lot are plenty brave, aren't you?” He joked, shaking his head.“Best to stay cautious when it comes to creatures such as this,” Remus chuckled, taking a seat. “Especially since Dung told us normal spells don't work on him. Besides, he made it right clear with the hissing for all of us to back off and stay away.”“I guess he did,” Sirius grinned. “I’m used to him so he doesn't bother me.”Then, sobering up, he said, “We don't have much time to put anything into place to make this look like we didn't know.”“We don't, but we'll manage,” Albus assured him, sitting once more. “I'll go to the castle as it won't look odd for me to be there. The rest of you—we can find a way, such as a meal out or whatnot. Never fear, we'll have as many there as we can.”“You need to thank Hank for giving us the heads up he did,” Molly said, sitting down by Arthur.“I will, don't worry,” Sirius assured her, planning to do just that. Yeah, Hank gave them something huge and he would make sure to tell him how pleased they were with it. While he wondered what this would cost him, he decided it was well worth the price, whatever it was.“Indeed,” Albus nodded, then began assigning places for everyone to go so they could not only help, but it wouldn't look odd. If this was as big as it sounded, they needed plenty in place.
Hank was standing at the display windows in the front shop, arms folded over his chest, watching the main street in Hogsmeade when he heard the familiar flapping come in. Though he knew it was Yama returning, he looked over his shoulder then gave a small smile and brief nod to his companion. Waiting for him to land, he asked, holding out his hand for the parchment the bird was carrying, “It went fine?”
After landing on Hank's shoulder then handing over the parchment, Yama hissed at him and clicked his beak.“Good,” Hank nodded, reading over what was there. When he finished, he told the bird, “They'll be here waiting for whatever this is. Not sure there. Which is good. We're going to wait it out right here and watch.”Again, Yama hissed at him several times, clicking his beak in an almost irritated way, feathers ruffling.Hank chucked and soothed, “I played with the wards. Nothing can get through them, don't worry. They're locked down as tight as I can get them, just like the house. I made sure the glass is all tinted to look dark, like no one is around. It'll hide that I'm standing here, nothing to worry about. Already grabbed us something to eat, so we're fine. Good and safe. I just want to see what's going on and how bad this gets. If it grows really horrific, we'll leave. I know you don't like being Apparated, but I'll take you that way if it goes to all out war.”Head cocking, Yama seemed to think it over then gave what could easily be read as a resigned sigh before relaxing on Hank's shoulder.“We'll be fine, I swear,” Hank assured his companion with a soft chuckle. “I've made sure of it. If we watch, I can gather plenty of information. You know me, Yama, I don't want involved with either side.” He then lowered his voice and added, “I've not seen how bad this can get and just what the wrong side is capable of. This will give me the intel I need to judge what to do with some bits. It's not something I can manage from just talking to someone.”Again, Yama considered what he was told then hissed at Hank, clicking his beak. After he finished, he ruffled his feathers and leaned against Hank's head, grooming his hair.“Figured you'd understand if I explained it,” Hank smiled, reaching up to stroke the bird's head. “I think we'll eat here. I know what time Luci told us, but I want to watch until then to judge what both sides might be up to.” He then conjured a table and chair before summoning their food. With where this building was, he had a perfect view of almost all the main street, so he could keep an eye on it. Even better, it was facing the castle. That meant he could watch there as well, though the view wasn't as good as the street. Either way, he'd have a front row seat for what sounded like a battle. Since he prepared the wards and building to the utmost, he wasn't worried.
Just as dusk began to fall, Hank took in all the activity going on all over the main street. Most was the normal, people coming and going, tending to whatever. However, there was more. There were a few he knew were DMLE, Aurors and Hitwizards popping into open shops. Though they weren't in uniform, he knew who they were. Others were walking around, trying to look casual, though staying alert. Part of the traffic was also people he knew were Order members. One was Sirius. He had gone into the Three Broomsticks with a tall man. They hadn't emerged yet.
“I think everyone is in place and preparing,” Hank told Yama, sipping at his beer. After tea, he had vanished the table and chair, replacing it with a soft overstuffed one with a hassock so he could just relax. In the meantime he had also fortified the glass in the windows and put wards up around the merchandise in the store. While he was sure nothing could get through his wards, he wanted everything, including what was his in the back, protected from any damage done by whatever. He thought he had everything the best he could. Now it was time to wait it out.As the sky grew darker, Hank was on edge. It was coming, well, something was. He could feel it in his bones the way he always had when there was something wrong going to happen. Eyes scanning up and down the street, he was pleased to see it had cleared out a bit, probably because of the warnings they received from plenty. Most of the shops had closed early as well. The Three Broomsticks and Hog's Head weren't, but that was expected. Yeah, it was coming.Eyes darting all over, trying to keep an eye on any and all movement, Hank flinched at the sound of a mass Apparation. There at the end of the street by the Hog's Head were a large group of masked Death Eaters. They didn't wait to gather themselves before spells began to fly as they made their way down the street, presumably heading towards the castle.Hank straightened up when he felt Yama hop over and perch on the arm of his chair, then he told his companion, “And the battle's begun.” Now it was time to see if the warning he gave helped.
