Chapter 13
~~~~~
Draco made his way downstairs, eyebrows furrowed deeply. Where was Harry? After Draco made an excuse to Kinsmith for Harry’s sudden absence, Draco went about talking with their guests and dancing with his children. Despite the fact that as soon as Harry left his side he felt anxious, he figured Harry had decided to use a different bathroom and would respect his husband’s space while he used the restroom. However, as the minutes ticked by, Draco’s anxiety increased with the continued absence of his husband. When he could no longer stand the absence, Draco stood up from his place at the table and approached his closest friends.
“Hey guys,” Draco greeted everyone rather tightly.
“Hey Draco.” Travis greeted in returned, wrapping his arm around Draco’s shoulders casually. “Where’s Harry? Didn’t make him run with regret already did ya? If so I’m manly enough to admit that I’d cry. I’ve got quite a bit of money down that he’ll make it at least a day before he runs.”
Hermione whacked his arm. “Dont be mean!” Travis chuckled in response. But when Travis turned back to Draco and saw the seething look he was receiving, the man took his arm away and took a step away.
“What’s wrong?” Hermione asked more seriously.
“Harry went off to the bathroom a while ago and he hasn’t come back” In any other situation the two friends would have found it funny.
“Give him some time Draco. Let the man do his business in peace.” Travis offered.
“He’s right Draco. You did just complete a bonding ceremony. You’re bound to feel anxious without your partner right after a ceremony like that.”
“He’s been gone an hour and he didn’t go to our bathroom which he always goes to. It’s possible that he got stuck in his dress robes or something but… I’m getting a bad feeling here.”
Travis and Hermione glanced at each other with a frown on their face. AFter a moment, Hermione looked back to their friend.
“Alright. I’ll help you look for him. I’m sure if he’s been gone that long then there must be a reason for it.”
“Thank you Hermione.” Draco breathed with relief.
“I’ll keep an eye on the munchkins” Travis stated and walked towards where the boys were arguing over a piece of cake they’d managed to sneak off the table without any of the adults noticing.
Hermione took Draco by the arm and the two made excuses to their guests as they left the reception hall. Once outside the hall, Draco went upstairs while Hermione went to check the downstairs. Together they went to look at every bathroom on the premises. As Draco checked with little success, he was having an increasingly hard time concealing his panic. Where the hell did Harry go?! Draco was going to kill him when he found the man.
“Draco!” Hermione called, swiftly making her way up to the second floor landing where Draco was currently standing.
“Have you found him?” Draco asked in a lowered voice. There wasn’t anyone about but he still didn’t want to run the risk of Kinsmith being where she wasn’t supposed to be.
The witch shook her head, “No I haven’t.”
For quite a few moments Draco said nothing. He stared over the banister and didn’t move. This was not good.
Harry felt himself swirl and twist as the small gold figurine in his hand tugged him along. As suddenly as it all started, Harry was thrown out of the tugging and swirling and landed harshly on his hands and knees. Not a second later, Harry felt his stomach rebel and his whole dinner was expelled onto the floor. In the midst of his hacking, laughter reached his ears and dread made him feel cold to his very core.
“Who would have thought that the great Harry Potter couldn’t handle a simple port key”
‘Stupid stupid stupid!!’ Harry mentally yelled at himself. His body ached, especially his knees and hands. He barely held in a groan when he felt his stomach tighten and not in a nauseous kind of way. He cradled his stomach, thanking whatever gods out there that his glamours were still in place before desperately pleading with the baby to stay put and not do anything stupid.
“I can’t wait to tell people about this. This supposedly great wizard being brought down by a port key.” Alden chuckled with too much pleasure.
‘Stupid!!’ Harry once again yelled at himself. Had he not learned from his past experiences to not do some sort of spell check on items that randomly show up? Goes to show shiny objects get even cautious wizards. Curse shiny objects. Hadn’t Jagra stated once that traveling under port key without the proper set up could cause a mother to lose the child? Harry squeezed his eyes shut desperately hoping that his horrible mistake wouldn’t turn into a fatal mistake for either himself or his child. He heard footsteps off to his side and cringed when he felt a hand yank his hair, effectively pulling his head backwards. Only reason he didn’t throw magic at the man was because he was afraid his tightening abdomen would do things it shouldn’t and the last thing he wanted was to give it away to Alden that he was pregnant.
“You’ve been in my way for too long man. I mean seriously. I figured that by now you and your little brats would have realized that Draco doesn’t belong with you and that patched together little family you’ve got going on. Stop playing house with my man or I swear you will regret the day you were born.”
“Why do you think he’s yours Alden. If he’s your man than wouldn’t he be here with you instead of being with me?” The brunette immediately regretted his question because Alden slammed Harry’s head down onto the flagstone floor.
“I’m being nice here.” Alden growled. “Dont be rude.” Alden brought Harry’s face back up into the air his voice becoming sickeningly sweet. “You seriously need an attitude adjustment. I mean, you think you can just go around and take other people’s lovers. That’s just not right.”
“You’re insane! I didn’t take him from you.” Harry growled back, trying to see past the blood pouring into his eyes from the head wound Alden so graciously gave him seconds before.
“Again, that’s not very nice! Speaking of nice,” Alden looked Harry over, “You’re dressed rather nicely. I heard that you were having some sort of event at the manor today but I couldn’t get the details on what kind of event.” The man’s too sweet tone came too close to Harry’s ear, “Tell me what you were doing??”
Harry would have head butted the man if he didn’t have such a tight hold of his hair, “It was a gathering of friends and family for a summer party and that was it.” Like hell would he tell this deranged man that he just married Draco Malfoy in front of everyone.
“It was incredibly rude to not invite me. That’s why I had that little gift left on your nightstand. Wasn’t that kind of me?”
“You’re a bastard.”
“Should you really speak like that to the man whom you stole from??”
“I didn’t take him from you. He left you. Draco told me himself that he wanted to get away from you.”
“You’re lying.” Alden slammed Harry’s head back into the floor, “You are so full of filthy lies you piece of shit. Draco would never say anything like that about me.” Harry groaned, feeling a bit light headed.
“The hell is wrong with you,” Harry moaned. “I’m not lying. He told me that he never thought of you two as a real relationship. How can I take something from you that you didn’t really have in the first place?” He felt the man release his hair and take a couple steps back. Harry took the moment to sit up, despite the rush of dizziness and look around him. He was in some sort of underground cellar and there were orbs all around the room that lit up the small area.
Off to his side, Alden stood staring at Harry with wide eyes. For whatever reason it seemed like for a moment, the man might actually believe Harry but then that surprised gaze turned murderous.
“You bitch. You almost had me for a moment. As I said before, Draco would never say that about me! He is mine and you will give him back!” Alden raised his wand directly at Harry. But before he was able to get off a spell, Harry raised his hand and sent a hex at him. It was the first one that came to mind and it was one that Harry knew quite well. As the sufflafligo hex hit the man, Harry cringed at the agonizing scream that echoed off the walls. Knowing exactly what kind of pain Alden was in, Harry almost felt bad for the man. Almost. However the throbbing in his temple made him anything but. He watched for a second as Alden crumpled to the ground, before taking the moment to look for an escape route. Thankfully there was a door off behind him and with shaking legs, Harry managed to get up and leave through the door. He was incredibly thankful when he found that they were alone in a small cottage in the middle of the woods instead of some hideout filled with equally insane bodyguards. There was no indicator on where exactly they were but Harry managed to find a fireplace with a very small pot of floo powder. Harry took a handful of the powder and threw some into the fire. The rest of the powder he quickly rushed to the sink and dumped the rest of it down the drain. After that was complete, Harry ran as best he could into the open floo and managed to make it back to his place in the suburbs. As soon as he entered the house he closed the floo, sat on the couch and starred at the fireplace for quiet some time.
His heart was racing and he wasn’t entirely sure he wanted to open up that floo network again. As he sat there, he decided that he would double check and make sure that the privacy settings on his network were working properly before he would think about opening it up again. But that left him with the dilemma of getting back to the wedding. The easiest way would be to go through the floo and get there that way yet the risk of Alden coming through was still there. In the end, he decided that he had to risk it and he threw a bunch of floo powder into the fire and quickly went through the fire and entered the private study in the Manor. As soon as he entered he tripped over his own feet and landed on his knees, making him groan in pain. Landing on his knees in the cellar was harsh enough. He didn’t need the added reminder that they were hurting. He needed to rest, his head felt funny the moment he got up in that cellar and the world was spinning a bit. But he didn’t want to rest there on the floor. Not in his wedding attire. As gently as he could, he managed to crawl over to the couch where he got himself up on and laid down. Once there, the world kept spinning but he felt a little better. He laid there for a moment before coming to the conclusion that he should probably find Jagra. His stomach was still tightening up a bit and it made him nervous. As he contemplated this idea, it occurred to him, why was traveling by floo better than traveling by port key for someone who’s pregnant? They both threw you through their own portals. It was something he’d have to ask Jagra later.
It was some time later that Harry manage to remember calling for an elf.
“Trip” Harry mumbled, a second later Trip appeared at his side.
“Master Harry. What can Trip do for you?”
“Get Draco and Jagra. Be discreet please.”
“Yes sir. Trip be off now.” There was a soft crackle that indicated that Trip had left the room. In the meantime, Harry closed his eyes and contemplated falling asleep. It didn’t take long before the doors to the study opened up. From the sounds of it, Draco and Jagra seemed to be walking at a normal pace and casually talking about business. That was until the door snapped closed and then their feet stomped on the ground in their rush over to him.
“Harry!” Draco yelped, seeing Harry lying on the couch by the fireplace, holding his stomach. Jagra and Draco rushed over and knelt beside him. “Where the hell have you been??” Draco scolded angrily.
“I’m stupid…” Harry mumbled. His speech was a little slurred and he had a hard time making Draco’s face come into focus when he opened his eyes. “I went to use the restroom like I told you. When I came out there was something on my nightstand. I hadn’t seen it before and for whatever stupid reason I thought you’d placed it there. So I picked it up. I didn’t know that it was a port key.”
“A port key?!” The doctor exclaimed. Jagra immediately brushed Harry’s hands away and started feeling all over Harry’s stomach, frowning when he felt the muscles contract a little under his hands. It was off to feel the muscles contract around a large belly when Harry’s stomach looked as flat as a board.
“Harry you need to drop the glamours. I can’t work like this.” The exasperation in the man’s voice made Harry sigh. It took him a bit with his head feeling so fuzzy but eventually the glamours came down and Jagra went to work feeling and listening. Draco leaned forward and brushed some of Harry’s hair off his forehead to get a better look at that gash and large amount of bruising and swelling around it. Even though Draco barely touched the area, Harry grimaced and shied away from the contact. No one had to cast a spell to realize that Harry had a massive concussion.
“What happened to you? Where did you go?” Draco pleaded, needing to know answers.
“Alden.”
Every fiber in Draco’s being went cold. Alden.
“How in the bloody blazes of hell did he managed to get inside the house. AGAIN!” Draco wanted to rip the whole place down just so the man couldn’t get inside his house anymore cause there wouldn’t be a house. “Trip!” the crackle announced Trip’s arrival.
“Master called.”
“Get one of the Aurors in here now.”
“Yes Master. Trip fetch them.”
Harry groaned feeling incredibly tired. “Draco, he doesn’t understand that you left him. He continues to think that I’ve stolen you from him. I tried to get him to understand but-”
“There is no reasoning with the insane.” Draco stated flatly. He glanced down at Harry’s body and made note of the bloody spots on the dress robes where the brunette’s knees were. Then he glanced up at Jagra, his chest tight with worry. “Is he going to be ok?”
Jagra nodded his head slowly, “Yes. He’ll be fine but that concussion of his has me worried. So do the contractions. They aren’t strong enough nor are they consistent enough to cause Harry to go into full labor but I want him on bed rest just in case. We need to get him into bed and on his side. It should stop the contractions for now. Here.” Jagra cast a spell that would alleviate the swelling in Harry’s knees and forehead. Then he cast another spell that would partially heal the scrapes on both of those locations. “The rest he’ll have to heal naturally. That’s best for the baby at this point. I dont want to do too much on the chance that it’ll send his body into full labor. I’m sorry to tell you, but you’ll have to postpone your honeymoon. At least for a week.”
“Of course” Draco agreed, already taking mental notes of the things he’ll have to change and switch. “If it means his safety I’ll cancel the whole honeymoon if that’s what it takes.”
“Dont be stupid.” Harry chimed in, sitting up with the help of Jagra and Draco. “We’ll go.” Harry reached over to grip Draco’s arm, “I’m sorry.” Those two words were quiet and sad.
Draco had just opened his mouth to respond when the doors open. A black haired auror dressed in nice dress robes entered the room looking rather confused. He saw Draco and Harry and changed his course towards them.
“You’re house elf said that you were in need of me.” His gaze went to Harry and the man’s eyes grew impossibly wide as his eyes fell upon Harry’s pregnant stomach. The blonde stood up and faced the wizard, intentionally placing himself between the auror and Harry.
“Let me just remind you that you signed a contract stating that anything that you see or hear in regards to Harry’s pregnancy will remain classified and only to be discussed with Auror Huffmin.”
The man nodded his head solemnly, “Yes sir, understood.”
“Good,” Draco stepped out of the way, “Now, the whole reason why you were placed here at our wedding today was to help us avoid any incidences that involve a wizard named Alden.”
“Yes sir. Auror Huffmin filled us all in on the matter.” The man stood up straight with his arms clasped behind his back.
Silver eyes bore into the auror’s skull angrily, “Then please explain to me why my husband was just port keyed to another location and was forced to escape from this wizard?? How was this man able to get an item into my home that was able to bypass all of my wards and port key my husband to another location. If you are here to prevent such incidences from happening then why did you let this son of a bitch get passed you!” Draco looked like he was going to murder the man.
The Auror stepped up to Harry and sat down beside him, attempting to keep his eyes off of Harry’s pregnant belly, “You were just with this man Alden? Please tell me everything that happened leading up and during the encounter.” He then pulled out a note pad and a quill.
Harry glared at the man, all he wanted to do was sleep and these questions weren’t helping him get there, “Yes.” Harry once again explained exactly what happened leading up to the port key, but this time he went into detail about what happened in that cellar. He nearly felt Draco’s anger when he retold how Alden had slammed his head into the ground multiple times. When the events had been written down the by Auror, the wizard stood up and put the note pad in his pocket.
“I can’t possibly express how sorry I am that he managed to slip passed us. I will confer with my colleagues and we will double check the guest list and make sure that everyone who is here should be. Mr. Malfoy, you said that you have wards up against this man. If you have strong ones up, like I’m certain you do considering the situation, it sounds as if Alden has managed to convince someone else to do his dirty work. And the person that he’s managed to coerce is the one who managed to slip passed the wards somehow. Again, I’m sorry that you both have had to face this on a day such as this.”
“I realize that you all have a lot of do and a lot to keep in mind.” Harry stated in a low tone, “But Alden could have killed my child tonight.We’ve managed to keep the knowledge that I’m pregnant from this lunatic but the simple act of using a port key is enough to push a pregnant person into labor. At this point it would have killed my child. This can not happen again. Forget about my safety if it helps you at all. Just please help us protect our child.”
The Auror stood silent for a moment, contemplating these words. Then the man’s face hardened and his jaw squared, “You defeated the worst wizard in our history, freeing us all from his rein. You’re life is just as important as you’re child’s. If I have anything to say about it, this threat to you and you’re family won’t be out free in the world for long.” He bowed his head slightly and left the room. When the three of them were alone once again, Jagra took another look at the spot on Harry’s head. Determining that he had already done what he could for the moment, he checked Harry’s stomach one last time.
“What do you men want to do?” Jagra asked, “Harry needs to lie down but you guys dont really have a good excuse in order to make that happen.” Harry and Draco looked at least other.
“Will you give us a moment Dr. Jagra.” Draco asked kindly. Despite his anger at the situation, he didn’t want to make the man feel like he was angry with him. Jagra stood up and left the room. Once alone, Draco knelt on the ground in front of Harry and cradled the man’s head in his hands. He gave Harry’s face a once over before dropping his hands to the bloody spots on Harry’s dress robes. The blonde took out his wand and cast a spell to pull the stains out of the cloth.
“I’m sorry Draco. I should have known better. And I’m sorry that we have to postpone our honeymo-”
“Stop right there.” Draco interrupted, “I’d postpone our honeymoon any number of times if it meant that you and the baby were alright. So dont go blaming yourself like you always like to do. I’m not angry with you. You and the baby are alright. That’s all that matters to me.” Draco pulled Harry closer to him and pressed his lips against the brunette’s. Their lips lazily molded together over and over again.
“Draco.” Harry groaned pulling away from Draco, “We need to make sure that the boys are with someone at all times. Someone that we trust. Especially once that article gets published. When he finds out things might not go well. Not until he’s caught at least. Can we really afford to leave our children when that article comes out?”
“Well, you are going to be sleeping for at least a couple days I’d bet.”
Harry flushed with embarrassment. They both knew that the toll during the ceremony was enough that when they had sex it would cause a magical transfer between the two big enough to make him sleep for a day or two. But no matter how many times his body pushes him into a slumber like that, he never stopped feeling guilty about them. Yes, he understood that his body was doing what it needed to in order to keep him and the baby safe but each time he left Draco and the boys hanging until his body was done taking a time out.
“Yes. This is true…” Harry muttered. That made Draco smirk teasingly.
“I marry you and you think it’s ok to leave me with the care of our two wild beasts. You’ll just have to make it up to me on our honeymoon. But seriously,” All teasing faded from Draco’s face, “We’ll figure it out. While we are on our honeymoon I’ll ask if Mother will allow Hermione and Travis to stay here at the Manor where they can always have an eye on the boys. And we’ll set elves to be with them at all times just in case an adult can’t be with them at any given moment. We can do this. The boys will be safe.”
“That sounds reasonable. And I know we wanted this story written and printed but should we ask Kinsmith to hold the story until we get back?” Harry asked. Despite Jagra being able to take away some of the swelling in his head, he still felt incredibly tired from the concussion.
“I’ll talk with her and see what she can do about the story. Are you ok enough to go back out there? Hermione and I have been looking everywhere for you so I’m sure she’d like to see you up and around a bit.”
Harry sighed tiredly but nodded, “Stay close ok?? My head still feels a bit fuzzy.” He took the hand that Draco held out for him and the two of them got up. Draco helped Harry put on his glamours once more and they went back into the ballroom where the rest of their guests were. Thankfully, the excuse to leave their own party came when Ciel had a complete meltdown when Travis refused to let him have a fourth piece of cake. The boys had snuck two more pieces of cake while the adults were off doing their own thing. Of course, they weren’t sneaky about it at all but the all the adults turned a blind eye to it. Even Hermione and Draco had noticed it.
When Ciel’s wails echoed in the hall, Harry rolled his eyes and walked over to the scene at the cake table. Ciel was on the floor screaming with fury as Travis fidgeted in front of him with his hands on his hips. He turned worried eyes towards Harry and Draco as they walked up.
“I just told him no.”
Harry shook his head and waved off the man. “You did nothing wrong. He’s tired.” Harry moved so he was standing over the child and watched Ciel for a moment. “Ciel Scorpius Malfoy” Harry spoke in his firmest tone. “You quit it right now.” His voice only made the boy roll over and cry some more.
“Noooo!” The boy screamed.
Harry leaned over and pulled up the boy by the arm until he was close enough to speak lowly in the boy’s ear.
“If you dont stop this tantrum right now and apologize to Travis I will spank your bottom right here and right now. Then you’ll really have something to cry about”
Draco was close enough to hear Harry’s words and they made him raise his eyebrows in surprise. He can’t remember hearing Harry threaten a spanking on their children before. But then again, they’d never thrown a tantrum quite this vocal or this public before. The threat seemed to do some of the trick because Ciel’s loud screaming was reduced to soft whimpers and sobs. He still didn’t apologize but it was much improvement from two seconds ago. Draco wondered with how quickly the child responded if Harry had made such a threat before and followed through with it. Made his happy to hear that Harry wasn’t all about understanding and distraction. Sometimes a child needed one good spank to get their attention.
“You need to apologize. And then we’re going to bed.” Harry said sternly as he stood up. “Go on.” He nudged Ciel towards Travis. The boy’s crying didn’t stop but Ciel took the couple steps that separated him and Travis and patted the man’s hand. There was snot everywhere on the boy’s face and his tears left tracks on his cheeks but he looked up at Travis with apologetic eyes. It wasn’t quite the apology that Harry wanted but he would allow it since the boy clearly seemed apologetic. And it wasn’t entirely his fault. The boys had been under a lot of stress with the lack of Draco’s presence and the overall stress in the air from Harry and Draco trying to put a wedding together in a week.
Travis bent down and placed a soft kiss on top of the boy’s head. It made Harry smile. The more they spent time with the man, the more of a genuine uncle he became to the boys. When Travis stood up, Ciel continued to bawl but he turned and buried his head in Harry’s stomach. Harry leaned down and picked up the child. Immediately, hands and legs wrapped around Harry as the boy buried his head in Harry’s neck. The brunette looked over to Draco with a tired smile.
“Will you go find Teddy. I think it’s about time these two go to bed.” It didn’t take long for Draco to find Teddy and bring the boy over to where Harry was standing with Ciel. Ciel had already passed out in Harry’s arms. Draco and Harry turned to their guests.
“Thank you everyone for coming.” Draco spoke out loud enough for everyone in the ballroom to hear, “I’m noticing that this seems to be a theme with us and I hope you’ll forgive us but we must depart our own party early and tend to our family. As many of you have just witnessed, our little ones are rather tired and me and my husband strive to always tend to our family ourselves.” Those who knew the couple well nodded their head in agreement.
“Please,” Harry chimed in, “feel free to continue enjoying the food and music and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you took time out of your busy lives to witness and celebrate our vow renewal with us.” They waited and thanked everyone as they came up to bid the family goodnight, Narcissa being the last.
“You two do what you need to. I’ll keep the party going and bid your guests goodnight when they decide to leave.” The woman stated warmly. Her eyes sparkled at the sleeping blonde in Harry’s arms.
“Thank you Narcissa. We appreciate it.” Harry said gratefully. “I’m sorry we keep having to leave our own parties before they are over.”
“Oh dear, dont worry yourself. You’ve got little ones to take care of and they are far more important than a party. I wished I had spent more time caring for Draco while he was young than I had. Go now. Shoo. I’ll take care of things.”
Both Harry and Draco leaned in and kissed the woman on the cheek. Then they promptly left the room and trudged upstairs. Harry was tired and he still felt a little wobbly from the concussion he suffered but he wouldn’t let Draco take Ciel from his arms. He held Teddy’s hand instead and walked behind Harry to make sure he was available if Harry needed any help at all. Draco was excited and feeling a sense of dread all at the same time. This night was supposed to be filled with love and he was supposed to whisk Harry off to the honeymoon he’d planned and spend the next week loving his husband on every surface he could find. And then go on adventures with him when he wasn’t buring himself inside of the brunette. But now that had to wait and he wasn’t entirely sure how long Harry was going to be asleep for this time. And it annoyed him to no end that he couldn’t do anything to help him. Either way, he’d just made a commitment to be there for his husband no matter what and he could find comfort in the fact that he had all eternity to love up on the man he’d willing give his life for. Thinking about that made his stomach twist. They still needed to get Harry to lie down so that they could stop the contractions he'd been having. He wondered if Harry was still feeling them. But until then, for he knew Harry would do nothing about himself until their children were taken care of, he turned his focus on putting to bed two tired and grumpy monsters that they liked to call their children.
