(Most of the Battle and Horcrux hunt is canon as are the resultant deaths. As always, the only changes made were due to the story I am telling and were, therefore, needed.)
The trio arrived at Hogwarts just after one AM on May 2nd and it was decided that Ron and Hermione would enter the chamber to destroy the cup before returning with basilisk fangs so that Harry could destroy the diadem once he'd found it. It was only luck that Ron and Hermione ran into Draco on their way to Myrtle's bathroom and it was his knowledge of the room of hidden things (located within the room of requirement, though one had to ask for it) that gave them the information needed to try and find the diadem.
"Go find Harry. Maybe you can go with him? He needs another set of eyes and Ron and I have another task," Hermione noted, her wide eyes focused on the tall blond's face.
The young man smiled at her, his gray eyes crinkling slightly at the edges. "How about I go with Weasley and you find Potter? It'll be easier for both of us as you have a better idea of where he might be. I could be looking for him forever."
She gave him a small smile. "Okay." Before she reached out to hug him, tugging at the blond male until she could wrap him in an embrace.
Draco immediately reached to enfold her, even as he dropped his head slightly, blowing warm gusts of breath against her ear. "I missed you."
Her blush came on like a thunderstorm; fast and total, but all she said was, "Good. See you soon."
Of course, things didn't go as planned. How could they? Not long after Hermione left her best friend and mate behind, she was attacked by none other than Greyback and Nott, Sr. She fought, fought hard enough that the elder Nott had trouble containing her, fought hard enough that she hurt both of them. She was bitten though, bitten and licked, mauled by the were wolf's sharpened nails until she felt raw panic which did not end until she blacked out.
Meanwhile, Harry had run into Luna and it was she who had shown him what the diadem looked like as there was a picture of it in the Ravenclaw's common room. From there, he went to question the picture of Rowena's daughter and learned that the young woman had stolen and hidden it in Albania. Tom had found it, though, and brought it back.
'He hid it HERE, I know he did. Probably somewhere that he thought no one would find. A secret. But what's secret can be found. I found the Chamber of Secrets. I found out about the Philosopher's Stone. I find things that are hidden....' Harry nodded to himself as his thoughts raced. 'He had to have found a place, like the room of requirement, a place to hide things....'
By then his feet had turned him toward the seventh floor. The renewed DA would have to leave because...
"Harry, where's Hermione?"
Ron's voice stopped him cold and Harry turned to stare at the tall redhead. "What do you mean?"
Draco spoke up. "We sent her off to find you, to tell you about the Room of Hidden Things. That's where I found the cabinet I fixed so that is probably where you need to go...but you have to ask the R.o.R. to find it, you have to ask for it in those words."
Harry nodded and set off, his words husky as he turned away. "Ron with me. Malfoy, please find her."
Draco turned around and retraced his steps, his sensitive nostrils led him back down to the second floor, to a long hallway just past Myrtle's bathroom which ended in a small courtyard. He found her there, her face bloodied, the elder Nott's body not too far away, cold and dead. With no thought, he bent to her side and lifted her into his arms and it was then that he saw the scarring, the absolute ravaging of her shoulder.
Greyback had gotten to her.
He turned and ran to the fourth floor and their rooms, hidden behind the painting. He knew that she wouldn't transform, the bites were from a human mouth, but the scarring would remain, her beautiful body was now disfigured by two maniacs. Of course, he didn't care. She was HIS and no matter what damage others had caused her, he would never see her as less than lovely but it pissed him off, completely.
After he bathed away the dirt and blood which covered her, he allowed his gaze to take in her form. The bite marks were in the crook of her shoulder, three of them, now closed and reddened. She had scars on her left side, probably from Greyback's nails, which were swollen. The word carved into her forearm, the white scars which skipped her collar bone and down to her left breast? They proved that his mate was a fighter, and still so very beautiful, maybe even more so than before. He would work diligently to make her believe it. With that thought uppermost, he tucked her into bed and left their rooms behind.
The battles raged inside and out as the many protections of the school faltered beneath Voldemort's rage and magic, and at some point, Harry had stumbled upon a bitten Snape who had shared his tears and memories with the young man before passing on. It was during a lull in the fighting, an armistice offered by Voldemort, that Draco had located Harry and Ron.
"I found her and she is now sleeping in our rooms. Greyback savaged her, thank gods he was in HUMAN form. She killed Theo's father. Be thankful for that as he was one of the worst during the Lord's revels." He spat the last sentence, his face twisted into a grimace. "If we come upon Greyback, let me handle him, please?"
Harry nodded. "Snape left me...something. I'll be back," he quietly stated.
Draco and Ron stared at the dirty young man but it was Ron who said, "What do you need us to do?"
"Destroy the cup and the diadem. Do it now, one for each of you. I'll be back soon."
An hour later, the battle was joined. Voldemort had called out to Harry and had told those inside to give the young man up. Pansy Parkinson tried to do so and was attacked by her own housemates, with Daphne being the one to cast the final hex with a vicious scowl. "He is the one to save us, you dumb fuck. Shut your mouth!"
Harry heard this just as he returned to the Great Hall. He made his way to Ron but found that Hermione was there as well, her face set in a cold expression, her body adorned in new clothes which hid her scars. "You want to go, don't you? You want to stop this."
Harry shrugged. "I have to. I am the last Horcrux and I have to die to end this. I have no choice."
Hermione caught her breath on a sob. "Then I am going with you."
Ron swallowed his own tears and staunchly replied, "Me too. You won't leave us behind."
Hermione shook her head. "However, there is another Horcrux that must be dealt with. Nagini, his snake. It has to be her as he never allows her out of his sight. She is always there. However, the basilisk fang won't work on her. The venom will do nothing. We need the sword or someone who can control fiend fire."
Draco appeared to her left, his arm curving to grasp her waist. "I can cast it but I am not sure if I can control it. I am stronger, magically, then I once was. Obviously, my mate is too. If we have no choice, I will cast it and take that stupid snake out. I may die in the attempt..."
Hermione turned on him. "Then we will find another way; I will not allow you to leave me behind."
Harry nodded, slowly. "Let's go, it's time." He then turned and walked away, his steps slow but sure. His best friends followed behind and once they reached the doors which led into the main courtyard, the three began to fight~ with Harry moving ever forward. People fell, to hexes and curses, to the left and right of the trio.
None of them noticed that Draco held their backs; the wand he had taken from the body of a dead Death Eater, flashing red, green and blue as he cast myriad Unforgiveables and nasty curses. The blond killed those who would oppose the trio, killed them with no remorse and no thought. No one would harm Hermione while he was able to protect her, no one would get close enough to touch her in any way. He would NEVER allow it.
The battle raged on until Hagrid came with a shout and tears, Harry's thin frame cradled in his arms. "He's dead. Harry's dead!!"
Tears and lamentations abounded but just as Voldemort swept into the courtyard with Nagini following behind, her muscular body swaying, Neville reached into the Sorting Hat and retrieved the Sword of Gryffindor. With a shout, a loud battle cry, the young man rushed forward and took the beast's head.
Then Harry got up.
The battle between the two was quick and deadly with their swirling magics meeting between them. Two cries "Aveda Kadavra" and "Expillimarius" were heard and suddenly Voldemort was gone, killed by his own curse. It was over. Aurors swarmed the battlefield, rounded up the remaining Death Eaters. The team of Aurors attempted to take Theo and Draco as well but Harry stopped them.
"I have memories from Dumbledore and NOW from Snape as well, along with journals from both which had been locked in a guarded location. Hermione told me that Dumbledore had given her the password during one of their last meetings though he never told her what it was for. We contacted Professor Snape and that gentleman sent the things he found to us, just a few weeks ago. These prove that Malfoy and Nott have worked for the Order for over a year, spies in the enemy camp. You will not take them as Arthur Weasley and Kingsley Shacklebolt were aware." He paused. "Please. Ask them. Ask those men if what I say is true..."
It was Kingsley who backed him up. "It's true. These young men are heroes. Leave them." He turned to Harry. "Give me the things Dumbledore and Snape left behind. I will make sure that they are read and watched, I promise."
Hermione reached into her small beaded bag and retrieved the vials and book. "Here, Kings. "
The quietude was splintered with crying, weeping and wailing, as bodies were counted, as the dead were lifted and carried into the Great Hall. There were so many gone from the land of the living: Remus and Nymphadora, Fred and Snape, Colin and so many others. Hermione's vision blurred with tears as they dripped from her eyes and it was not long before she was huddled with the Weasley's, hugging and kissing as the pain was shared.
Draco stood off to the side and watched.
Finally, Arthur broke away and strode to his side. "Your mother has been returned to the Black Lodge and is safe. A few of the young women in your house: Pansy Parkinson, Daphne Greengrass and her little sister, have elected to attend her until the Manor can be cleansed and stripped of all dark magical items."
Draco studied the man, quietly. "What about Potter and Hermione?"
"Harry will return with us to the Burrow. We need to reapply our protections and his magical strength can help with that. Hermione has said that she wants to stay here, to help rebuild the school over the summer." Arthur paused. "One assumes you will remain here to protect her. If that is so, then Ginny also plans on staying."
Draco shrugged, his shoulder rising and falling quickly. "I will talk it over with Zabini and Nott. They may want to stay as well and, as long as I have permission to see my mother, there would be no reason for me to rush home." He bowed to the older male. "Now, if you'll excuse me, Mister Weasley, I need to find my friends." The blond turned away but whipped back around a moment later. "Will my secret remain a secret?"
Arthur nodded. "There is no reason for it to be bandied about and only a select few of the Wizengamot will be party to the information both Kingsley and myself share. Hopefully, the memories will not need to be used. In fact, your condition was not written about in Albus Dumbledore's journal and it is that which we hope to use to fend off queries."
The young man shuddered and swallowed, loudly. "Then, I thank you for your forbearance."
Arthur smiled. "No. It is we who should thank you, you and young Nott and all of the other young people who fought to protect what was important. For you? It boiled down to your mother and Hermione, the students you saved during this last year were an afterthought...but you saved them anyway. I am sure for young Nott and Mister Zabini that their reasons were quite the same. We will probably never understand why you chose the path you trod but we are grateful, nonetheless." With that, the eldest Weasley walked away.
The next few weeks were filled with funeral rites and burials as those who had left life behind were interred in the deep coolness of the earth. School was closed and students were shuttled home until only those who chose to help rebuild the school remained. Certain students had been found, after the fact, like Lavendar Brown (another female who had tasted the vileness of Greyback) her throat and the right side of her face ravaged from claw and bite marks. It was the first thing to ever bring Hermione and the girl together. The fact that it also drew Ron's attention away from her own relationship was just a bonus.
By the first of June, only a total of thirty-two sixth and seventh-year students remained behind, eight from each house. A goodly portion of those young men and women would be taking their N.E.W.T.'s over the summer, in between their daily tasks with the remainder being offered a chance to retake the entire year.
The Golden Trio had been offered their pick of jobs in the Ministry but Hermione had shot that down, at least for herself. Ron and Harry had decided to accept the proffered positions and study for their chosen test subjects while training. However, the female third had talked it over with Ginny and Luna (not saying anything to Draco so that he would not try and influence her decision) before requesting that she be allowed to complete her seventh year.
Of course, she was accepted.
As for the Silver Trio (Otherwise known as the Sneaky Slytherins), they had also asked to retake their final year as the previous one had been spent trying to survive instead of studying. Their requests were swiftly granted and as the work on the school continued apace, each and every student who had chosen to return felt the first flutters of excitement. Finally, they would have time to relax, time to regroup, time to be young men and women instead of soldiers.
It made the time fly by.
Draco spent two weekends a month with his mother, reconnecting to the woman who had fought so hard to protect him. Of course, Pansy continued to try and seduce him, denigrating his relationship with Hermione often enough that eventually, Narcissa asked the young woman to leave. That had not been pretty.
There were questions though.
Narcissa wondered why her son hadn't sealed the bond with Hermione but he did not have an actual answer for her. He only knew that the time wasn't right. The pair still slept beside one another, still spent the majority of their time together but the female of the pair suffered from horrible nightmares, due to the torture and attack. She woke up, too many nights to count, in tears and sweating, her entire form vibrating. In fact, sometimes he wondered if she'd been raped due to the way she jerked away from him when she wasn't expecting his touch.
Near the end of July, the young woman shared with him the fact that her parents had died in a plane crash while she had been on the run and she was now the proud "owner" of a Gringott's vault which contained 276,000 galleons (due to her reward from the ministry, the sale of her parents' home and a life insurance policy). He knew, without being told, that she would have much preferred to have her mom and dad back. This was also added to the list of reasons why the pair hadn't progressed.
It was during his last visit of the summer that he had fucked it all up.
It had been well over a year since he'd actually touched a woman, a long time for a sexually active young man to be without the friction, heat and wetness intercourse provided. The last few months had done nothing for this set of problems, due to the many reasons he had listed to his mother. The tension meant that he tried to keep himself busy which was why he'd been at the Manor that day, working alongside the few Aurors and curse breakers who had come to finish their perusal of his home. Somehow, someway, Pansy had talked her way into a visit.
He'd ended up drinking and angry, at the woman he loved and at himself...and without thought, without meaning to, he'd dived up between the silken thighs of the raven-haired female. Of course, the contraception spell had been cast by him, twice, but that did not matter. By the time school began again, Hermione had been told, by Pansy no less. She had demanded that he remove the cuff from her wrist and then she left.
It would be just under two years before they would see each other again.
Thus Ends Book One...
(Yes I know that Lavender Brown died in the movie and that she dies after the attack later in the book BUT the fact that she "stirred, feebly" just after the werewolf's ravaging of her form allows me to say that she still lives but is now scarred and damaged. This is what I chose to do. :P. Also, I loathe Pansy Parkinson. That is all. I will be working on editing the next Chappie of this story within the next day or two. Please. Tell me what you think??)
