"I'll have the apple cinnamon," Kili said, his dark head tilting as he studied Roark, watching him as he prepared their tea, which he brought to them as soon as it was ready. He frowned deeply as their fingers brushed. "Son of a BITCH!" he snarled out suddenly. "They gave you a hard time."
Fury flared fast and furious in silver and emerald eyes, but it was shut down just as quickly as it had flared, resignation settling into the gazes, making all three Durin's swear, each grumbling unhappily.
"I'm so sorry, Rory."
"It isn't your fault," he said as he sat, turning his body, a leg lifting as he settled beside Logan, their knees touching. "As much as we hate it, we expect it to happen wherever we go."
Harry brought over plates with sandwiches and chips, then took the chair across from Roark. "The only ones at fault are the ones who continue to keep treating Rory like he's some child playing a game at being a Colonial Warrior. As if entering the Academy at fourteen could EVER be called, or even CONSIDERED a game by anyone. As if the grades he achieved while there could ever be considered a game. Over and over they demand he prove himself, even though his scores and grades at the Academy should be proof enough--"
"Harry." It came softly, interrupting his brother, for the longer he went on, the angrier he was becoming, making the room spark and crackle with uncontrolled lightning magic. "Eventually, my brother, I will have to stop proving myself to any of them that I can do this job, and when that day finally comes, we can laugh in their faces and tell them 'I told you so,', but until that time DOES come..." he paused, shrugged. "Let them say whatever they feel they have to. WE know I can do the job, those that are close to us know I can do this job, and that is all that matters."
Harry calmed, looking at his brother with a slight smile. "As you say. I can still wish you didn't have to go through this every time it happens."
"So could I. We need to talk later, boys." He turned his attention back to the three Durin's, changing the subject completely.
"We can't do it here?" Logan asked his brow arching, not because of the change in subject, but because of the tone of voice as they both shook their heads.
"No, we can't," Harry answered, looking at each of them, then around the office, his eyes narrowed, before his gaze returned to them. "What we need to discuss can't be spoken of here just yet," he told them, his magic suddenly giving off a gentle him as if he were--
"You're scrambling any listening devices that may be in the room, aren't you?" Fili asked him, looking at him with an arched brow, surprised that he could.
Harry nodded. "But it won't last long. Not long enough for us to talk about everything we need to."
"Will you guys be home later?"
"We can be," Kili answered him easily. "It's not like we have anyone to see or anything we need to do once we're off duty."
"Agreed," Logan answered with a slight grin. "Usually, once I'm off duty and in for the night, I stay in."
"Yeah, us too," Rory said with a shake of his head. "Harry will usually grab the newest sci-fi thriller he's reading, or he cooks up the newest and latest recipe he's found for us to try. Me? Well, you can usually find me curled up in a chair, or the corner of the couch, working diligently on one of the five or six cross-stitch projects I have going. Or you can find me out in the garden we put in when we moved into our new apartment. Pathetic, aren't we?"
"Oh, I don't know about that. With Dad, Uncle Roark, and many of the cousins watching over us so closely, it's usually better to be safe, than sorry, not that the rest are any better. We're watched like Hawk's watch prey."
A snort from Logan. "No kidding. The few men I HAVE attempted to see, or even thought to go out on a date with for any length of time, were never good enough. Hell, the last guy I even thought about going out with, he went through an inquisition from Kale--" he broke off suddenly, his head dropping to hide his face from them when he said his brother's name.
Kili immediately reacted by slipping an arm around him, pulling him to his side, and murmuring something into his ear. Logan nodded and looked back up. "Sorry, Harry, Rory."
"Never be sorry, Logan," Roark said as he reached over to lay a hand on his leg, unexpectantly feeling his intense pain, his sadness, and through him, Fili and Kili's. What the HELL? he thought. That had never happened so strongly before. "I understand. We've been friends for too long, and we have all been in each other's homes as often as we were in our own. Our parents were best friends, and we are very aware of just how close-knit you Durin's are."
"Certainly closer than most families could ever dream to be, and so protective you want to scream at them to just leave you be," Harry said with a smile.
"Oh Kobol, YES."
Fili suddenly chuckled as he shook his head. "THAT will never happen," he said. "I know just how protective I am, but some of the elders? They tend to be a bit extreme about it."
"I think that's a bit of an understatement, Fi, don't you? Hell, you two," he looked pointedly at Harry and Roark, "are not even Durin's, and they protect you with the same fervor they do me and Chris."
Kili made a sound of agreement. "It isn't just you and Chris, Logan. Any of us that are under twenty-five fall under their watchful gazes."
"For which I can thank Kobol or Rory would very likely be dead now if Rohan had not gone to check on him when he had," Harry said as he threw his brother a glare.
"Alright Harry," he said with resignation. "I admit it. I was stupid. There. Happy now? You, Rohan, and Gareth all told me to wait to confront Mason. I didn't, deciding instead to go ahead and confront him alone after learning what I had."
"I will never be happy as long as you insist on placing yourself in unnecessary danger," Harry grumbled.
"Right back at you, brother mine," he shot back at him with a matching glare.
