Lachlan paused just before the heavy door that led to the Slytherin Head of House's private quarters and took a deep breath. He'd always intimidated her, ever since he'd been an apprentice under old Professor Quickfoot during her seventh year. She'd only seen him a few times since then, mostly at the small parties Reginald gave for his best customers once or twice a year. Professor Snape was always in the corner, drinking a glass of aged sherry and scowling at anyone who passed.
She finally gathered up enough courage to knock on the door using the heavy silver knocker in the shape of a snake. Damn Slytherins. Scary as hell, but so sexy without even realizing it. Reginald himself had been a Slytherin, and even now his House alliance made him seem darkly sensual when he allowed it to. Of course, he's been showing THAT to that Gilliam bint, mused Lachlan with a frown on her face. She hadn't been standing there but a few moments when Snape appeared at the door in a blousy black shirt and black trousers. A pensieve was open on the table in the foyer and Lachlan tried to peer into it as he swept her into the room.
House elves brought Master Snape and his "lady friend" tea and a tea service, but quickly scurried away when he shot them a dark glare. Does the man do nothing but glare at unsuspecting people?
"Make yourself comfortable, Ms. Lachlan. I hope your trip has been...uneventful? No surprise guests?" Snape sneered at her and Lachlan nearly lost her composure. The man was unnerving! If he knew she was harboring Black...knew he was her lover...why...not only would she be ruined with the Ministry, she'd be ruined with Reginald as well!
As much as she hated him for cheating on her, she figured that he wouldn't break off their impending engagement. She was too smart a match since pureblood witches were hard to come by nowadays. Her family wasn't quite as intermarried as many since her father's people had married into the Druids and the Fae for centuries before his marriage into modern wizarding society. If she and Isobel hadn't decided against it, she'd be married to a priest in Avalon by now.
"No," Lachlan managed to squeak, "Nothing eventful has occurred. Just an average trip for investigative purposes, no, no breaks at all." She sank down in her chair, relieved, and began staring into her teacup. Perhaps the swirling patterns the cream made in the dark tea could be used to divine her fate. Teacup, teacup full of cream, save me from this horrible dream! Ahh well, it was worth a try.
"I trust it has been pleasurable then? Since you haven't found Black or anything yet." Snape stared at her and curled his lips into a knowing smile. Lachlan felt the blush coming on and knew her hair was probably purple at this point. Damn that man for being so...unerringly correct! Lachlan put her teacup down and was trying to make her excuses before backing out of the door, but Snape was too quick for her. He clasped his hand on her wrist and stared her down with unblinking black eyes.
"Ms. Lachlan, I'm not sure what your game is, but I am sure of one thing. You're keeping a secret and a rather large one judging by the color of your hair. I'm a Legilimens, and there is no point in lying to me. I'll discover it soon enough. Now, it may be something as simple as you cheating on your almost-fiance, or you might be hiding something from the Ministry. I suggest you reevaluate your actions and present a stronger front. You wouldn't last a moment in the Dark Lord's presence, skittish as you are. Good day, Ms Lachlan. I see Lupin is here for you."
Lachlan let out a sigh of relief as she saw the completely unintimidating Lupin standing nonchalantly at the door, lea leaning against the doorframe and a rare twinkle in his grey eyes. She had the feeling that Lupin knew more than he let on, but at least he wasn't as...condemning about it.
"Come on, Ms. Lachlan. We need to discuss how to fortify the castle while Black's afoot. We'll discuss it down in my office over a cup of tea." With that, Lupin waved his wand and the teapot and tea set disappeared. Lachlan assumed that he'd apparated it to his office upstairs and followed the nicer wizard out of the dungeons.

Author's Note: I don't own the concept of Avalon..that sorta belongs to King Arthur and his crew of miscreants. Heheh. If you couldn't tell, I do sort of have a thing for Snape as Alan Rickman plays him. That old bat scares me enough that it turns me on. Don't question it...lol..I'm just nuts!
