"Avada Kedavra!"
The curse echoed in Hermione's ears. She dimly heard a man's voice shout something, but it didn't matter, because she was dead
A shriek pierced the fog surrounding her brain, and she opened her eyes. She didn't seem to be dead after all. But then, what had
Selima Snape was lying motionless in her god-awful chair, and her wand had dropped from her still fingers onto the stone floor with a gentle clatter. Looking around, Hermione saw that the shriek came from the woman who had followed her husband downstairs.
Speaking of her husband she looked frantically about for him, and spotted him lying prone at her feet.
No
It couldn't be! But how else could the curse have been blocked? With trembling, ashen hands, she delicately turned Severus onto his back, and gave a sob of relief as she heard him groan, and threw herself on his body, eliciting a much louder groan. Through her tears, she cried weakly, "Don't you ever, ever do that to me again, you bastard!"
He opened his eyes, apparently as surprised to be alive as she had been a moment ago. He was about to say something, when they heard a rumbling noise from the direction of one of the many ominous-looking tunnels leading from the drawing room. He struggled to his feet, which was made slightly harder by the pregnant woman on his stomach, and hauled her up alongside him. Gripping the back of a chair in one hand, and Hermione's hand in his other, he whispered, "Run!"
They tore as quickly as they could across the room, hearing the other woman screech "Wait!"
Hermione glanced over her shoulder to see if the woman was following (which she was), and screamed in terror.
Emerging from the tunnel with tremendous speed were several hundreds of sharp, deadly-looking daggers, which proceeded to tear through the room undiscriminatingly, shredding everything in their path. Hearing his wife's scream, Snape lost no time in looking over his own shoulder, but launched himself in the nearest tunnel, pulling her behind him.
Just in time; for they heard the whiz of daggers slicing the air immediately outside their hiding place not a second after they had ducked into it. Not wasting a moment, Severus muttered, "Lumos," and led Hermione through the twisting tunnel with great speed, pausing only to re-orient himself with the four-point spell.
Panting for breath as they ran, injured man and pregnant woman, Hermione gasped, "Where does this tunnel lead?"
"The kitchens," Snape replied shortly.
After what seemed an eternity of darkness, lit only by Severus' wand light, they spotted a pinprick of light. The proverbial light at the end of the tunnel, Hermione thought grimly. Except we aren't dead. Not yet, anyway.
As they emerged into the kitchen (as spotlessly clean as the rest of the mansion), Hermione asked breathlessly, "Should we go back for that other woman?" Given what she had heard, she didn't really want to, but thought she had better ask anyway.
"That bitch can bloody well fend for herself," Severus snapped. "No doubt she knows the tunnels as well as I do by now. Seems Mother's been keeping her as some sort of expensive pet, groomier fer for initiation into the family." He hadn't let go Hermione's hand, and was still steadily yanking her through the massive kitchens.
Hermione stopped in her tracks. "Severus," she said firmly, "No matter what kind of bitch she is, we can't just leave her here to get herself killed!"
"Why not?"
Hermione goggled at him. "Don't you think that's a little cruel? Even for whatever she undoubtedly has done?"
Snape grimaced at her. It had been a long time since that expression had been directed at her, and she didn't like it a bit. "What," he asked slowly, "do you propose we do? Search all the tunnels? Go back into the death-trap the old harridan rigged? I'd rather not, if it's all the same to you."
Hermione disengaged her hand from his, the better to put on her hips. "It bloody well is not all the same to me! That woman could die, and you're just going to let her because it's too bloody inconvenient for you to try and find her! That's despicable!"
Snape drew himself up to his full height. "Don't talk to me that way!"
Hermione snapped back, "I'll talk to you any way I want to! I have a right, don't I? I'm your wife, aren't I?"
"As if I didn't know!"
"What, having regrets? A bit late for that!"
Snape muttered something under his breath to the tune of what, she couldn't quite make out. "What was that," she pressed, "some sort of Snape family curse? Following in your mother's footsteps after all, are you, Severus?" She knew as soon as the words were out of her mouth that they were the wrong thing to say---would have known it beforehand, but her mouth seemed to have formed them of its own volition. The stricken look on his face cooled her temper a bit, but by no means abolished it.
Attempting to change the subject, she ventured, "So how do we get out of this place, anyway?"
But her husband was still looking at her with the same expression on his face, halfway between shock and horror. He took a few steps backward, then turned and ran.
Terrified, she called after him, "Where are you going?"
She barely caught his shout back, "To find Yenorra!"
Sorry that was so short! I ran out of time, and I really wanted to get it up. Be sure to tune in tomorrow, for chapter sixteen: In Which We Find Out What the Bloody Hell Happened in Chapters Fourteen and Fifteen. What? It's a working title!
