Insomnia "“ Faithless

Faith woke up alone the next morning and panicked for just a minute, not realizing where she was. She had lain awake for hours after waking from her dream and was just settling back down to sleep again when she heard him singing on his way upstairs. She felt a goofy smile spread over her face and turned to the door just as Sirius walked in the room with a tray held out in front of him.

"You made me breakfast in bed?" she asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Kind of," he said with a smirk.

She laughed as he put the tray down next to her, two mugs of coffee, a pack of cigarettes, a lighter and an ashtray.

"There's no food in the house anyway," he said lying next to her on the bed.

She leaned over and kissed him. "It's perfect," she said, "You look tired babe."

"I didn't sleep very well last night, that's all." At Faith's worried look he touched her cheek. "It's nothing," he said, leaning over to kiss her.

But every morning of that first week she found herself waking up in bed alone. She would go downstairs and find him asleep, slumped over the kitchen table. She wondered if he was having nightmares too, but didn't ask. If he wanted to tell her, he would.

Faith awoke slowly on Saturday morning, reaching out for a lover she knew wouldn't be there. She sat up, brushed her hair over her shoulder, then looked around the empty room. She smiled suddenly, as she got out of bed and stretched. She reached out and picked up one of Sirius's button down shirts off of the floor, putting it on as she made her way downstairs. She loved wearing his clothes; they smelt of him and always made her feel safe. There was also the added bonus that it drove Sirius wild, as she had found out one morning when she ended up naked on the kitchen table, with her champion thrusting into her.

She opened the kitchen door, a wicked smile on her lips, only to be greeted by a room full of people. Her smile never faltered as she made her way through the crowd of people to Sirius who was lounging at the head of the table, his chair, which had been resting on its back two legs, came down with a bang as he looked at her with a mixture of amusement, lust and horror on his face. She sat down on his lap and leaned in as though she was going to kiss him.

"Oh, you'll pay for this," she hissed, in mock anger.

"I'm so sorry, Faith," he whispered, sounding more amused than repentant, "I couldn't sleep so I came down here, then early this morning Albus floo'ed to tell me that there was a meeting scheduled here this morning, and then they just turned up and I didn't have time to warn you."

She silenced him with a deep kiss, turned to face the assembled crowd, lit a cigarette and said "Order of the Phoenix, right?"

Everyone laughed and the silence was broken as the order members went back to chatting amongst themselves while watching Faith out of the corner of their eyes.

She turned at the sound of sniggering to her right and saw Harry there with Ron and Hermione behind him. He handed her a mug of coffee. "Hi Faith," he said with a smirk "You certainly know how to make an entrance, don't you?"

"Years of practice, Harry, years of practice," she said, "What are you guys doing here anyway, and how was your first week back?"

He smiled. "Dumbledore said we could come to see you and Sirius, school's the same as ever, it's a lot more fun with Willow there though, she's been helping Professor Lupin all week."

"Yeah, I bet she has," laughed Faith, winking at the trio and making them all blush, "Where are Wil and Remus anyway?"

"Running late," replied Sirius, "As soon as they arrive we'll start the meeting."

"So I have time to go and change then?" she asked, leaning back into him.

"If you must," he murmured into her ear.

"Yes, please do," sneered a voice from the other end of the table, "Because, in case you have not noticed, this is not a lap dancing club."

The kitchen fell silent again as everyone watched Faith seek out the face to go with voice. She found him sitting directly opposite her. She looked at Sirius over her shoulder, "Which one's this?"

"That is Severus Snape," spat Sirius, the hatred obvious on his face.

"Yeah? Cool," replied Faith, turning her attention back to the black clad wizard "I'm sorry Sev, I didn't realise that this was a costume party, " she said innocently.

"It isn't," Severus bit out.

"Huh, so why are you dressed like a bat?" she asked, gesturing to his robes.

He stood sharply, "How dare you speak to me like that!"

"Oh it just comes naturally," she said with a smile.

"Let's get one thing clear," he snapped, "I didn't want you here, you or your friends."

"Well it's a good thing that it's not up to you Batman. "˜Cause want us or not, we may be able to help."

"I don't need your help," he said with a nasty smile, "You see I still have my magic."

Sirius's chair banged to the floor as he growled and advanced on Severus who already had his wand drawn and pointed at the taller man.

"What are you going to do, slobber on me?" sneered Severus, a look of hatred on his pale face. Sirius grabbed him by the front of his robes, but Severus pushed his wand tip into Sirius's throat.

"Hey, hey!" yelled Faith, "Enough!"

"Excellently put, Miss Faith," said an authoritive voice from the fireplace.

The two wizards didn't so much as move so Faith turned to see whom the voice belonged to. Willow, Remus, Andrew, a woman about Faiths age with short, bright green hair and a tall older woman with her hair in a tight bun and glasses on the end of her nose were standing by the fireplace.

"Severus, put your wand away at once, and Sirius sit down," she said sternly walking into the kitchen using a cane. She looked Faith over "Miss Faith, if you would be so good as to go and put some clothes on, then we can began the meeting."

"Sure thing," said Faith looking at the intimidating woman who could stop the two men with a couple of words. She knew who she was straight away from listening to Sirius and Albus talk about her, Minerva McGonagall, the deputy headmistress of Hogwarts. Faith left the room, idly thinking of ways she could hurt the snarky potions master.

~*~

As far as Faith could tell the meeting went well. They were very well organised and everyone had a job to do and knew how to do it. Ron's dad, Arthur, who had seemed to Faith to be a harmless, friendly man was suddenly every inch the minister he had been elected to be, and in Albus's absence, he and professor McGonagall held the meeting.

Everyone was brainstorming and putting forward ideas except for Sirius, who was silent and brooding and Faith herself, who wasn't sure what she could do until the final battle.

As the meeting came to a close and the trio were sent back to the school with Tonks and a love struck Andrew, Minerva turned to Faith. "Is the rumour I've been hearing about you correct Miss Faith, that you tore Mrs. Black from the wall and put your foot through her face?"

"It's just Faith, professor, and yeah, I pulled the spiteful bitch off the wall and gave her exactly what she had coming," said Faith, wondering for the first time if she was in trouble. She looked over at Sirius who smiled at her, and back at the old woman

"May I ask why Faith?" said Minerva, her stern face still a blank mask.

"Well mainly, "˜cause she pissed me off, and it's not a good idea to piss me off," she replied loudly, looking over at Severus and blowing him a kiss with her middle finger.

Minerva looked from Faith to Sirius and to everyone's surprise, burst out laughing. "Oh Sirius, that's some woman you've got yourself there, I like her."

Faith smiled and shook her head, she imagined that this woman and Albus made quite the couple, a thought that was confirmed when Minerva turned to Sirius and said, "Well aren't you going to offer us any refreshment, I know you have Firewhiskey here somewhere and it's my night off."

Sirius stood up and got two bottles out of the cupboard and five glasses, putting them down in front of Faith, Minerva, Willow, Remus and himself.

"Oh, I don't really drink," said Willow, "Willow and alcohol are kinda un-mixey things."

"Yeah?" said Faith, unscrewing the top off of the first bottle and pouring them each a large shot, "Here's to us kicking the bad guys asses." She raised her glass, the others followed suit as she downed it in one swallow.

By early evening, the three women were making so much noise that the order members who were still working had to move to the drawing room to make themselves heard.

~*~

Just after midnight, Sirius shook his head, as he smiled and pulled the kitchen door shut, thinking that if ever there was a dangerous threesome to put together, it was the three powerful women getting drunk in the kitchen. He was going to try and get some sleep tonight. He'd had a few drinks in the hope that they would knock him out enough to keep the dreams away. As he climbed the stairs to go back to bed he heard the drawing room door open. He turned to come face to face with Severus again.

"Running off to bed to wait for your slayer?" sneered Severus, pulling his travelling robes around him.

"I think of worse things to do, like go home to an empty dungeon room or worse still, to be in the service of a madman," said Sirius matter of factly.

"True," said Severus thoughtfully, "But the knowledge that I'm not a coward gives me a little comfort at night."

Sirius walked back down the stairs, "What did you say?"

"You heard me Black, always hiding behind someone, Albus, Minerva, Harry, Remus and now the slayer."

"I don't have to hide behind anyone Snivellus," growled Sirius "I'm happy with who I am."

"Really? Then why all the excuses not to go after the man who handed your best friends to the dark lord and sent you to Azkaban for twelve years?"

"What excuses?" spat Sirius,

"Well first was the fact that you were wanted man, which I suppose was valid, but a shame, as I would dearly have loved to have seen your face right before the Dementors kissed you. Then you allowed yourself to be seen by Lucius, ensuring that you couldn't even leave in your more pleasant form. Then there was the episode at the ministry, chasing your foolish godson, the only time I might add, when you ever showed any backbone, but tell me, did you know that the veil would temporarily rob you of your magic?"

"What the fuck"¦?" said Sirius incredulously, "I knew you'd been subjected to the Cruciatus curse a few times but I had no idea that you'd finally lost the plot"?"

"Well, I was just wondering. I mean, you are no longer a wanted man, mores the pity, so in theory you could go out and join the fight, find Peter, have your revenge, but no. Suddenly your magic has gone and you have to stay at home again. It's all very convenient. It's almost as if you don't want your revenge."

"Oh, I'll have my revenge Snape, one day," snarled Sirius advancing to where Severus was standing.

"He still talks about it you know," said Severus, smoothly.

Sirius stopped in his tracks, his slate eyes meeting Severus's obsidian ones. "What?"

"How he bought you all down, handed the Potters over to their death, got you sent to Azkaban. He did it to spite you, you and Potter, for excluding him when you were younger. He still laughs as he says that he can walk around Knockturn Alley knowing what he did and you'll never come after him, because you're"¦afraid."

Sirius lunged for Severus, who ducked out of the way and was out of the front door, laughing nastily before Sirius could say anything.

Sirius walked to his room, undressed and climbed into bed, his blood boiling over his exchange with Severus. So Pettigrew thought that there would be no retribution for what he had done, that Sirius would just lie down and take it.

Three hours later Sirius made his way back downstairs and into the kitchen. He stopped for a moment and just looked.

All three women had passed out. Minerva was resting her head on her hands on the table; Willow was on the floor with her head resting on the chair and Faith, his Faith, was laying on top of the table, ankles crossed, hands resting on her stomach.

Sirius felt his stomach clench but reminded himself that he was doing this for her. He had been planning on it anyway, after the dreams started, but his conversation with Severus had clinched it. He leaned over and planted a feather light kiss on her forehead and a note under her hand. He stared at her and tried with all his might not to see the images from the dreams that had plagued him since their first night together.

Dreams of her beautiful body, bloody and broken at Voldemort's feet, her heart-stopping smile turned into an eternal grimace of pain, and him helpless to have stopped it because he had been found unworthy to be her champion and the powers refused to return his magic.

"I love you Faith," he whispered, "I won't let you down."

She never stirred. Not even when he stepped out into the London night and closed the door behind him.
