Unexpected Obsessions
Chapter 15- Here Comes the Bride
As the wedding day drew nearer, Hermione found herself overwhelmed with tasks. Everyone tried to help, but she found out there were many things only she could do. The day before their wedding, her check-up with Poppy proved to be very interesting as they found out what the sex of the child was. She was ecstatic. Severus would get a son to carry on his name. They celebrated at the dinner, on the eve of their wedding. Prisca and Viscera arrived, with her three children, and a few other Snape family members arrived. They all were staying in the guest quarters that Albus had prepared for them.
At the dinner, Hermione wore her elegant robes Severus had bought for her, along with a cameo Prisca had given to her. The dress was made of muslin, and was very soft and flowing. The robes, a deep burgundy, accented her clothing very well. She wore her hair up, so that the cameo would be quite visible to the guests. Prisca stated it had been in the Snape family for many, many generations, and it was her duty to give it to her. She had received it from Severus' grandmother, Gwendolyn, who couldn't attend because of her health. She was nearly as old as Albus, and had been ridden in bed for some five odd years.
Hermione and Severus entered the Great Hall, where the Head Table had been arranged in the center of the room, and elongated to accommodate all the guests. There were around fifty witches and wizards there, as well as the students that remained at Hogwarts over their Christmas break. As they entered, Albus directed everyone's attention to the betrothed couple, and they applauded quite energetically.
Severus and Hermione were seated in the middle of the table, his family to his left, and her guests, along with Remus and the other Professors, to her right. Harry gave them a toast, which everyone joined in on, and Remus stated the reasons he was giving his consent for Hermione to marry Severus.
"I have been acquainted with Severus since we were eleven, but have truthfully only known him for the past five years. He is a man of great integrity, high morals, and an extremely passionate man. He has overcome many obstacles in his lifetime, most of which would make a common man, such as myself, go completely insane. He watched over Harry, and Hermione during the war, and put his life in danger many times throughout the battles. Never have I seen a man so brave and courageous. Never have I met a man, that makes me prouder to call my friend. Severus, you deserve to be happy, and I know Hermione is the woman to fulfill all your dreams. You're a very well-suited couple, I've never met two people more interested in learning in all my years. You may have my blessing to marry her, and I wish you all the happiness, all the love, and all the good luck in the world." Everyone was a bit speechless, especially Severus. He had no idea Remus felt that deeply about him, and it profoundly touched his heart.
"Thank you Remus. It is with great honor that I accept her to become my wife, and I will cherish every moment with her as if it were my last. I will make you proud, and you will not regret your decision. May the ghost of Merlin strike me dead if I ever harm her in any way."
Hermione was a bit shocked at his choice of words, but there were a lot of things about wizarding marriages that she didn't know. Albus presented them with a sacred candle, one that each person had placed a blessing upon. It was to be burned during their ceremony, and then only lit on their anniversary. It would never completely burn down.
Hermione rose to speak, and announced the news Poppy had told them earlier that afternoon. "Thank you all for sharing in our happiness, and we are very fortunate to have such caring, loving friends. We have a bit of news to share with you. Earlier today, we've found out we're having a son to proudly carry on Severus' name." Everyone erupted in cheer, and Prisca simply nodded to her son. She was so happy that there would be an heir to carry on the Snape family name.
"We've agreed upon naming him Leksi Urian Snape. It means defender of man from heaven. We thought it very appropriate considering our pasts." Everyone agreed it was a beautiful name. After they all ate a wonderful feast, Hermione and Severus partook in a cleansing ceremony performed by Minerva in front of their guests. No one spoke, but they drank from an ancient goblet, and for the first time since he'd received the Dark Mark, Severus Snape felt free of the burdens of his past. Several hours later after dancing with numerous witches and wizards, Severus sensed Hermione's fatigue and decided to end their evening.
"I suppose it is time I left you dear." Severus spun her around one last time, and kissed her gently on the forehead.
"I hate to think of spending this night alone. Not waking up in your arms, you holding me tightly." She leaned in closer, and breathed in the muggle cologne she'd grown quite fond of. She could never tire of his scent. It was one she never wanted to forget.
"And I don't look forward to waking up alone either. But it is only for one night, and then the next time we sleep, you'll be Mrs. Severus Snape, and I'll be your very proud husband." They stopped dancing, and he gave her one last kiss as Hermione Granger. He stood back from her, holding her hands, taking a long look at her. She became uneasy and asked him what he was doing. "I'm taking you in, as you are, forever embedding your gorgeous form into my memory." She let a single tear, trickle down her cheek, and pulled him close for one last kiss. He brushed the tear away, and told everyone goodnight. He feared if he stayed a moment longer, they would all see his own tears of joy as he fought them off.
Hermione made her way down to the guest room Albus had prepared near the Great Hall for her. She wasn't to step foot out of the room until time for the ceremony which wasn't until six-thirty the following evening. She was a bit apprehensive at first, because of the hour, but in the wizarding world, they believed the opposite of muggles. Ginny would be staying with her that night, and she would arrive just after ten. That gave Hermione an hour to bathe and relax. She still hadn't finished her vows to Severus, but knew what she wanted to say. She truly doubted she would read from the paper, but it still helped to have some idea of what to say.
Feeling refreshed from her bath, she turned on some classical music, and relaxed on the comfortable sofa by the fire. She summoned some parchment, a quill, and ink, and set out writing the strongest, most beautiful words she'd ever written. She heard a faint knock on the door, and Ginny came in. She was staying with Hermione and would be with her until the ceremony. They talked about their pregnancies a bit, Ginny was really miserable and looked like she could go at any moment. Hermione wasn't too far behind her, and she still had 4 months to go. They finally headed to bed around midnight, and both slept like babies in the king sized bed.

Harry reached the dungeons just after breakfast. Sirius and Remus were with him, they came to lend moral support. They knew how difficult Severus could be, and wanted to help Harry out all they could. Severus was pacing his room, trying to find something to do. He still had nearly eight hours until time to prepare, and he feared he would go crazy before noon.
"Come on Sev. Want to go into Hogsmeade for a little bit of last minute shopping?" Sirius was suggesting anything that could help him quit worrying.
"I do not have any last minute shopping."
"Well I am just trying to help. Care for a game of chess?" Remus knew Severus was as good as him and it would take quite a while to finish one game.
"Very well then. I'll get my board." Severus retrieved it from beneath the counter, and they began a game that lasted nearly three hours. Remus won, but not without a fight. "Well, what do you suggest we or tor the remaining five hours?"
Sirius and Harry both said, "Eat. We're starved." Remus sent for some lunch, and the men ate terribly slow to pass the time. At half past three, Prisca arrived to give him her final blessing, and to have one last minute chat with her son. She handed him a Celtic cross that had belonged to his father, and he accepted it with great integrity, considering the past they had shared. After she left, Harry returned alone, and they began to prepare for the ceremony.
He had brought his robes, an elegantly tailored black suit, and his gift to Severus. Hermione insisted Severus' robes match her gown exactly, so they were deep royal blue, almost a navy and trimmed in silver. Harry's were a deep forest green trimmed in cream. They were the same as Sirius' and Remus' and all five of their suits matched entirely, which was Ginny's idea. Not one complained, as they knew it was no use to argue with a pregnant woman, let alone two of them. Harry had brought Severus a good luck charm, which was an old custom of wizarding marriages. He had received one from Sirius when he and Ginny married, and so he brought one to Severus.
"Here, it's a little something to help you during the ceremony." Harry reached into his pocket and pulled out a small diamond shaped picture frame with a photo of Lily.
"My goodness. She must have been around fifteen in this picture, am I correct?" Severus stared at the picture, and it was almost as if he went back in time.
"Yes, almost sixteen. Hagrid gave me this picture in a photo book my first year. I shrunk the picture down small enough to fit into my pocket. I've never went a day without it, and so far, it's worked pretty well. I want you to keep it with you and hopefully it will work for you as good as it has for me."
"I truly appreciate this Harry. You have no idea how much. I have something for you as well." Severus went into the bedroom and returned with the gift he had bought for Harry. "It's our way of saying thanks for being my best man, and thanks for just being yourself." He watched as Harry's eyes filled with awe as he held the cufflinks and tie clip in his hands. "I take it they're to your liking?"
"My goodness yes. They're really nice. Thank you. I guess this is your way of saying you'd like to see me wear suits more often instead of tee-shirts and jeans." Severus chuckled at him amused at his joking tone.
"Something like that I suppose." They changed into their wedding attire, and Severus handed Harry their bands. "Keep them with you at all times." Severus put on his teacher glare, and Harry just smiled.
"I'll not take them from my pocket until you ask for them."
"Good. I suppose we should head to the Great Hall now. You'll be expected to walk my mother in, as well as Sirius," he gave a small snicker at that image, "and I have something for Lupin." They made their way up to the Great Hall, passing Remus in the corridor. He was making his way to Hermione's but stopped when Severus asked to speak to him in private.
"Hermione said you were very fond of these," he opened the silver and green box to reveal the candlesticks, "so I thought I would give them to you. It is customary to give the bride's father a gift, as I am sure you're aware of, so I thought I'd give these to you. There's something else too." He handed him the new briefcase, his name in gold across the front.
"Thank you Severus. It has been really good for me, getting to know you. I truly am sorry for the way we treated you in school, and I wish I could go back and change that."
"Nonsense Lupin. What stories would we have to share with our children, and god-grandchildren if we had gotten along?"
"I see your point." Severus found his way into the Groom's room that Albus had arranged for him and patiently awaited Harry's return. They'd decided in on a small wedding party, only Ginny, Harry, Remus, Severus and Hermione took part. Hermione had asked Minerva, but she didn't feel she'd last through the ceremony without blubbering.
Minerva had transfigured the tables and benches into pews, and the Christmas decorations only added to the ambiance of their wedding. One hundred-fifty trees adorned the hall, and many silver and blue wreaths hung from the bows. All ornaments on the trees were changed to cream, silver, forest green and navy as well as the tapestries hanging on the walls. It almost looked as if everything was covered in a thin layer of ice. Albus had arranged for an orchestra to play and Severus heard the music change into Canon in D by Pachelbel. He charmed the wall so he could see through it, and watched as Harry escorted in Sirius, both men smiling like psychopaths, and then escort in Prisca. She had a very stern look on her face, and for the first time in his life, Severus realized where he learned to sneer.
Harry returned into the room, and Severus took one last calming breath. As Albus appeared at the head of the makeshift altar, they made their way across the aisle, and stood in position. Ginny came in, glistening in the candlelight, and soon the music changed into one of his favorites, Ave Maria. Severus felt his heart skip a beat as he watched nothing but the beauty of the woman gliding towards him.
She wore a beautifully crafted gown, deep navy with an embedded floral print. It was trimmed in the same silver as his robes, and had a cream underlay. She chose not to wear robes, but her veil and tiara were extraordinary. Severus knew immediately it was from the Potter family, he had seen a picture of Lily and James on their wedding day, and knew Lily had given it to her. He couldn't see her face, but he knew she was beautiful. Hermione was always beautiful. Even in his old faded tee-shirt she was still beautiful. Her hair was pulled up with curls strategically cascading down her back, and the cameo from his mother shone brightly. The earrings and bracelet from Molly and Arthur accented the sapphires in the tiara, and he knew he'd never see a sight more beautiful than the one before him, for as long as he lived.
As she got closer, Hermione felt a tear trickle down her cheek as she watched Severus remember to breathe. She could tell he was nervous, and it only helped to calm her own nerves. It was good not to be alone in her fear. As they reached their intended position, Remus gave her a few final words of encouragement. He whispered to her that she was at the end of her journey as Hermione Granger, and it was time to begin the new journey as Hermione Snape. She smiled affectionately and Remus felt it touch his heart.
They stopped at the altar, and Albus began the ceremony. "Dear wizards, witches, ghosts, and friends. We have been invited here to witness the bonding of this wizard's and witch's hearts for all eternity. Who gives this witch to this wizard?"
"I do." Remus stated proudly, and Sirius had to add in his two cents.
"And I do." Everyone smiled at him, and Albus continued.
"Very well. You may take your seat. Your journey as her guardian has now come to an end. It is now time to step aside, and let another worthy of her love take your place." Remus kissed her on the cheek, lifted her veil, and took his seat beside Sirius. Once he was sitting, Sirius held his hand so tightly he feared it would break. Upon closer examination, it was he who was holding on so tight.
"Please, join hands." Hermione handed her tiny bouquet of orchids to Ginny, and grasped Severus' hands. They were strong and so warm. She didn't know how she survived without his touch for nearly twenty-four hours. Severus was enchanted by her eyes, they had never been so bright. He noticed the unshed tears, and instinctively wiped them away. She mouthed a silent "thank-you" as Albus spoke of love and eternity.
"Hermione and Severus, I am honored to bond your marriage, and it shall be law within this world. I will now ask you your vows. Hermione and Severus have chosen the traditional vows, as well as their own. Severus, if you may." He took a deep breath, and hoped his voice didn't tremble as bad as it was in his head.
"I promise to be your lover, companion and friend, your partner in parenthood, your ally in conflict, your greatest fan and your toughest adversary. Your comrade in adventure, your student and your teacher, your consolation in disappointment your accomplice in mischief, your strength in your need and vulnerable to you in my own, and most of all, your associate in the journey to the here after. This is my solemn vow." He took another calming breath and began the sonnet he had prepared for her. He was a private man, and didn't need to reveal all his feelings in front of everyone, so he thought of a sonnet that seemed to have been written for them.
"Those lips that Love's own hand did make,
Breath'd forth the sound that said 'I hate',
To me that languish'd for her sake:
But when she saw my woeful state,
Straight in her heart did mercy come,
Chiding that tongue that ever sweet
Was us'd in giving gentle doom;
And taught it thus anew to greet;
'I hate' she altered with an end,
That follow'd it as gentle day
Doth follow night, who like a fiend
From heaven to hell is flown away.
'I hate' from hate away she threw,
And sav'd my life saying-'Not you'."
A tear fell down her cheek, and was followed by a small stream of continuous tears. She didn't know he knew that sonnet, it had always been one of her favorites. Albus then asked her to speak her vows.
This is my solemn vow." Severus squeezed her hand tightly and she found the courage to carry on.
"There is a light that shows me the way,
To a secret garden, with a fragrant bouquet.
And as I enter through its welcoming gates,
To savor all that for me awaits-
I can't help but wonder why the light chose me
Why fate gave me the Garden's key.
For whatever the reason, this much I know,
It is a lovely place where I love to go.
A garden full of life's delights-
Of tenderness and wondrous nights.
A garden in which to nourish my soul;
A place to go to make me whole
Where the warming light beckons me "stay,"
Where always it is a wondrous day..
Time has shown me this simple truth,
That the light that shines from high above-
That leads me to this garden each day
Is the nurturing light of your infinite love."
She spoke proudly as she finished, and several sobs could be heard throughout the Great Hall. Albus beamed as he went on. "Harry, the rings please." He reached into his pocket and pulled them out, handing each one to Albus. "These rings symbolize the love that is shared between these two. It is a never ending cycle of love, for it will continue from here to eternity. Even in the here after these rings will guide them to one another, keeping them together." Albus placed them upon his text, and blessed them with his soul. A bright silver and gold light shot right through them and encompassed Hermione and Severus. "Now, Severus, take this ring and repeat after me." Severus let her right hand drop, and held her left delicately. He repeated after Albus, and slid the band onto her finger. She repeated after Albus and did the same.
"It has been proven here that they truly love one another, and nothing can break their sacred bond. You have become man and wife before these witnesses, and forever shall you remain that way. I truly never thought I'd say these words," and Albus' eyes twinkled in merriment, "but Severus, you may kiss your bride." He pulled her closely as she wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed her tenderly. It was a very tastefully open-mouthed kiss, with just the slightest touch of tongue. They turned to face their guests, and Ginny handed Hermione back her bouquet. "Witches and wizards, it is my esteemed honor to introduce you to Mr. And Mrs. Severus Snape." The orchestra belted out Ode To Joy by Beethoven, and they made their walk down the aisle as man and wife.
The Great Hall erupted into cheer as they passed, both overwhelmed with joy and happiness. They stopped at the oak doors in the entranceway, and watched Harry and Ginny, followed by Prisca with Albus and then Sirius and Remus join them. Severus took this chance to whisper to her. "How are you doing Mrs. Snape?" Hermione smiled wholeheartedly, and replied, "Just fine. Gr. Granger." Severus chortled, and raised an eye brow at his bride. If her lighthearted mood was anything to go by, he'd bet he was in for an interesting evening. Especially once they returned to Snape Manor.
