The two of them were happy and in love.
Unfortunately for Hermione, in the back of her mind the upcoming wedding of Ron was still on her mind and every night she wondered if she should even go to it. Her thoughts were interrupted as Draco reached down and touched her chin, turning her face to look at him.
“Penny for your thoughts?” he murmured. Hermione smiled a little and leaned into his arms as she looked back towards the fireworks.
“Nothing except what I’m planning on doing to you when we get home.” Hermione giggled as she felt Draco tug her hand and start leading her away from the bridge they were standing on. He quickly weaved through the people, walking almost a block before Hermione was able to stop him.
“Where are we rushing off to? The firework show isn’t even over.” She pouted her lip a bit as she looked at him, making Draco roll his eyes. He pulled her against him and after only being pressed against his body for a brief moment, a red tint took to Hermione’s cheeks as she realized exactly what her teasing had done to him. She bit her lip and smiled as she looked back up to him. “I think you can manage to wait for a little while.”
It was only because Hermione looked so hopeful about catching the rest of the firework show that Draco didn’t drag her home and toss her onto the bed to ravage her. But he knew that as soon as the damn thing was over, he was going to. As he wrapped his arms around her and Hermione turned around to continue watching the show, Draco smirked a bit as he looked around, seeing all these Muggles, wondering whether or not they had any clue that magic was around them.
“Fancy seeing you two here,” someone said from behind them. Hermione smiled and Draco grimaced as Harry and Ginny walked up to them. “You two look quite lovely.” Ginny added.
“Ginny,” Hermione reached out and hugged her tightly, “How are you feeling?” She stressed the last part, knowing of Ginny’s condition. “Harry, you haven’t been keeping her on her feet all night have you?” She asked, looking to her friend. Harry stopped looking directly at Draco for a moment as he shook his head.
“No, I’ve tried getting her to sit down but she insists that she’s fine.” He replied, a small smile crossing his face as his gaze met Hermione’s. The one towards Draco however, was a bit colder.
“Pfft, I’m pregnant, not broken.” Ginny cut in as she hooked arms with Hermione and turned towards the two males who seemed closer to having a pissing contest then actually speaking. Both Hermione and Ginny glanced at one another before Ginny tilted her head, “Don’t mind us if we’re interrupting boys, but I’m stealing Hermione away for a bit.” Pulling Hermione with her, Ginny made her way towards a small cart that was selling hot cocoa.
Draco watched as Hermione walked away with Ginny, only taking a moment before turning back to Harry.
“Potter.”
“Malfoy.”
The two refused to say much more, but to the two women standing off to the side, pretending to sip their hot drinks, knew that something more was there.
“You don’t think they’ll actually start fighting, do you Ginny?” Hermione whispered as she tried to warm her hands from the warmth from the cup. Ginny sighed and shrugged a bit as she looked up to her nervous friend.
“Honestly, I can’t say. Harry really doesn’t like him, Hermione. And to make matters worse, I still don’t think that Harry’s really ever forgiven Draco for everything at Hogwarts, let’s face it, both were complete idiots and made an arse of themselves regularly.” Ginny replied, taking another sip. “I do know though if Harry starts anything in public I will have something to say to him, and I’d have to say he’d be sleeping on the couch tonight if he did.”
Hermione smiled a bit, watching the two men in front of her as she nibbled on her bottom lip. She knew that this was a long time coming and was something that was eventually going to have to occur. She felt a small comfort knowing that it was only Harry that was standing in front of Draco at the moment, and not Ron and Harry.

“They’re watching us you know that right?” Harry asked Draco after a few moments of standing there, “Probably wanted to give us time to talk so they pretended that they were freezing when we both know it’s not true.”
Draco raised a brow a moment before sliding his hands into his jacket pockets. The leather wasn’t exactly the warmest thing that Draco had but it hadn’t really mattered when he had Hermione’s body against his. Glancing towards the two women that quickly looked away the second his head turned, Draco smirked.
“They wouldn’t be women if they didn’t try and interfere,” he murmured, “And God help me but if us being civil and just talking makes Hermione happy, then I’m willing to do it.” Draco’s gaze met Harry’s as he finished his sentence and he saw a slight surprise in the scar boy’s eyes. “What? Do you think that I’m just using her for sex? Because to tell you the truth, at first I was.”
“Not a good way to start things off, Malfoy.” Harry growled. Draco laughed a bit as he shook his head and looked down a moment, only to look back at Harry, a challenge in his eyes.
“You want to take me on, Potter, then take your shot. I’m telling you the truth, which is what you want I imagine. But tell me this, if I was still only planning on using her for sex, then why the fuck would I be standing out here in the bloody cold watching a damn firework show?”
Harry took a few moments and then grinned slowly as he laughed a bit, remembering the reason he’d come out in the freezing cold weather wearing only his leather jacket while Ginny was bundled up like a child on a snow day with their mother. He noticed that Draco was in the same attire as himself. And even though he didn’t want to admit it to himself, he knew that part of the reason that they were both standing there, staring one another down and not throwing punches at one another came down to one simple word.
Love.
“You really care for her then?” Harry asked. Draco looked from Harry towards Hermione and then back towards Harry.
“More than my own life, Potter. Just as I imagine you care for Ginny,” he replied. “I would never hurt her if I could prevent it and I’d put my life before hers in a second.” Harry nodded and then made sure to meet Draco’s eyes one last time.
“Make sure you do that then, Malfoy. Or I can promise you the next time I see you, I will murder you.” Harry knew that his threat was just words at the moment and that Draco could just brush them off. But as Hermione and Ginny walked back up to meet them, he watched Draco as he wrapped an arm around Hermione, pulling her to his body immediately and Harry knew that he wouldn’t have to make his words true.

Hermione smiled as she walked back into the apartment with Draco. She twirled around as she pulled her scarf off and giggled as she extended her arms, “Tonight had to be the best night of my life,” she murmured.
Walking up to him, she giggled as she slid his jacket off his shoulders and began to unbutton his shirt. “I think that it’s time we went to bed, don’t you, Draco?” Hermione leaned up to kiss just below his neck, but Draco put his hands on her shoulder and stopped her. Creasing her brow, Hermione looked up to him, confused.
“What’s wrong?” she asked.
“Hermione, there’s something that we need to talk about.” Draco said, pulling away from her. Dread came across her face and her heart began to speed up as she took a deep breath in. Taking a moment to try and calm down, she pulled her jacket off as she watched him go through his things.
“Okay, Draco what’s going on? You’re scaring me, Draco.” Hermione sat down on the couch after draping her coat on it and clasped her hands together, wringing them as panic almost set in. Her eyes remained only on him as he turned around, balled up parchment in hand.
“There’s something that I haven’t told you about, and I need to if we’re going to be in the relationship that I wanted.” Draco said softly, walking towards her as he extended his hand, giving her the crumpled parchment, “I got another letter.”
“Another letter?” she murmured, still confused about what was going on. Draco nodded and watched her as she pulled apart from the crumpled ball he had made. He knew exactly what part she was at by the expression on her face.
Draco;
Remember to take notice of my warnings because I will not be telling you again. It’s obvious to any observer that you care for the witch, Hermione Granger. I am not going to tell you that it’s impossible for you to have a relationship – just take care not to fall in love.
Love makes you do insufferable things that will end up doing nothing but hurting you.
It hurt your mother.
Once again, take notice because I shall not be repeating myself. Your mother didn’t listen to me when I told her of the dangers she was in, try not to make her death in vain and not listen to the ones I give you. The wedding you’re planning on attending be sure to watch carefully and I stress that you mustn’t allow things to go the way that you don’t want them too.
I fear that those who are to strike upon you and make your life non-existent will, in time, make their move. If you have fallen for the Mudblood, protect her and make sure that she is with you at all times. I failed to do that with your Mother.
“Do you believe this?” she asked a few moments later, glancing up towards Draco who was pacing back and forth.
“I’m not sure what to believe anymore. But I do know a few things, first off it’s someone I’ve known for quite awhile and secondly they knew my mother – intimately from what it sounds like.” Draco replied.
“Who do you believe it to be?”
Draco laughed a bit as he shook his head and ran his fingers through his hair, there were so many times he had laid awake at night with Hermione in his arms and he’d wondered that same exact thing. And the conclusions he’d come to, had been unsettling. Every single one of them.
“Honestly? My father.” Draco whispered. Hermione’s eyes widened as she stood up, letting the parchment fall from her fingers as she wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his chest before looking up to him.
“Draco, I don’t mean to,” she sighed, “Your father was killed after he was released from Azkaban.” Draco smirked at the words she used, released. Lucius Malfoy never was released from Azkaban, he had escaped and then had been caught by Lord Voldemort and killed in front of Voldemort’s most loyal Death Eaters during their seventh year.
“I don’t actually know if he’s actually dead, Hermione.” Draco mumbled as he wrapped his arms around her and pressed his lips to her hair, “Mother always told me that he’d been killed but that’s because that’s what Bellatrix had told her. Bella had claimed to have been there.” Hermione pulled away just enough to look up at Draco and cup his cheek with her hand.
“So you don’t actually know because,” she paused, “You’ve never seen a body.” Draco nodded as Hermione sighed and took a moment, pushing her hair away from her face. “Wow. I mean it’s entirely possible that it could be him because whoever it is has mentioned you listening to them before and your Mother was never with anyone else or never mentioned anyone after the death of your Father, right?”
“Of course not. She was in love with my Father; it was evident anytime I talked to her.” Draco replied. Hermione shrugged a bit as she reached down and picked up the letter again.
“And they did write mudblood, in the letter. So it obviously has to be someone who’s been in line with He-Who…Voldemort.” Hermione finished. “That’s the only problem about it possibly being your father Draco, wasn’t Voldemort a bit, well, angry at your Father?” she asked.
Draco nodded, but then shrugged.
“I don’t know actually, I mean I always thought that he was because of the, well because of what happened in the tower that night. I always figured that Voldemort killed my Father because of my failure, and I never thought the opposite. Maybe what’s really happened is my Father was able to only be tortured and he’s been alive all this time, working for Voldemort, and now he’s sending me these warnings.”
Hermione nodded, sitting down as she rested her chin on the palm of her hand as she looked over the letter. There was things that seemed familiar to her, things that just didn’t seem to match with the person being Lucius Malfoy. Not wanting to hurt Draco though, Hermione thought it best to think about it a bit before she mentioned anything that might end up dashing his hopes for good.
“Let’s not bother with it right now,” Draco cut in reaching for the parchment. Hermione glanced up, noticing that he was asking for the letter she held. With a sigh, she handed it over.
“I don’t mind trying to help you out with it Draco, and the fact that it has my name on there makes me want to help you. Anything to keep both of us safe,” she murmured, standing up as she reached out for him.
Draco took her into his arms, kissing her forehead gently.
“We’ll deal with it after the wedding; after all it just says that we need to be cautious there. I doubt much is going to happen, but we’ll keep an eye out on things, alright?” he said softly, running his thumb along her cheek.
Hermione nodded.
Draco knew that if he asked, she’d do anything for him right now. But all that mattered was that she knew and now that she did, she couldn’t be angry at him for going out of his way to protect her. He looked down to her neck, his worries easing a bit as he saw the necklace hanging from her neck.
Hermione may have been the greatest witch in Hogwarts, but Draco was also skillful in more than just the general arts within magic, he also knew some Dark Arts and some of those allowed for the protection. Usually those spells were used for ones protection, but he used it to protect the one person he’d come to love.

Behind a closed door in a cold and empty inn, a man sat shivering in his old robes. No one gave him a second glance as he walked through London, looking like a homeless man with his dirty and stringy hair. But he hadn’t exactly had the chance to get his haircut; much less he no longer had the money to get the best robes that money could buy.
As he looked over the parchment that was still drying from the wet ink, he held it up to try and read it by the light of the candle. It wasn’t a lot but the warmth of the candle warmed his hands enough.
As long as Draco took care to listen to his warnings, he knew that he, along with the young witch that Draco had come to love would be fine.
Just as long as they remained together.
