Chapter Fifteen – The Haven or Hell?

    “She’s stirring!”

“Will she actually wake up this time?”

    “I don’t know!”

    “Well, is she all right?”

“It’s too early to tell. Go and get the professor.”

“Maybe we should wait until she is properly awake this time. He has a lot of very important …”

“Do you want her to wake up ‘properly’ and have to explain to him why he wasn’t told she was stirring?”

“I will go and inform the professor.”

    “You do that.”

Hermione moaned, fuzzily recognising the two voices from a previous life.

    “Hermione? Can you hear me?”

“Yes,” she groaned out, trying to open her eyes.

“It’s me,” the voice continued chirpily, albeit unhelpfully.

“Who?” she winced as her eyes opened for a split second, then slammed themselves shut against the light.

“Lavender Brown,” the voice informed her. “Hold on, don’t open your eyes until I’ve closed the curtains.”

Lavender? Hermione thought. That means the other voice must have been…

“Ernie’s just gone to get Professor Snape,” Lavender concluded Hermione’s revelation for her. “I’m really sorry about the Weasleys, but at least the professors finally believed us.”

“Professors?” Hermione questioned weakly, carefully allowing her eyes to open infinitesimally.

“Snape, McGonagall and Moody,” Lavender explained. “Although, to be honest, Professor Moody didn’t need any encouragement to believe the worst about the Weasleys. Anyway, they’re all fixed now and staying clear from Professor Snape. He was rabid when he realised you had been hexed. Honestly, Remus is now afraid for his life, even though he was under a spell himself, but that …”

    “How long?” Hermione interrupted.

“Three days,” Lavender supplied. “You’ve been in and out of consciousness the …”

“My baby?” Hermione asked weakly as she tried to move her hand protectively towards her stomach.

“Our baby is fine,” came Snape’s deep voice, soothing her worries.

“Severus,” she breathed, her head turning towards him, her eyes opening wide enough to see a long black shadow swoop down over her and grasp the hand curled over his stomach.

    “Drink this,” he ordered softly.

Unhesitatingly Hermione complied, sighing as the warmth of the potion flowed through her system. Her eyes once more drifted shut.

“Professor,” she dimly heard Lavender say, “they’re ready for you now.”

“I will be there shortly,” he responded, smoothing Hermione’s bushy hair off her forehead.

    “No,” Hermione murmured. “Stay.”

Severus Snape smiled softly down at his wife, ignorant of Lavender’s wide-eyed, surprised gaze.

“Until you sleep,” he promised quietly, his voice rumbling low in his chest.

“Don’t … want to … sleep,” Hermione mumbled as Morpheus dragged her down into a healing slumber.

Quickly, Severus stood up and fired charm after charm down onto his now sleeping wife, replacing all the spells that Bill Weasley had stripped off her. Then, his face hardening in resolve, he swept from the room to confront his apparent allies.

Leaving behind a starry-eyed Lavender Brown.

    *~*~*~*

They were all seated around the one of the tables in the cavernous kitchen when Severus Snape finally hunted them down, his magic and anger crackling ominously around him. As one they all tried to stand and leave, only to find themselves glued to their seats.

    “Severus,” Remus began placating.

“Silence!” the enraged wizard’s sibilant voice filled the room with his rage. “I do not care what you have devised as an excuse for attacking my wife, but let me assure you that nothing less than an Imperio cast by the Dark Lord himself will save you!”

Remus looked towards the battered, and still recovering, Minerva McGonagall, only to find her face set in stony indifference.

“You have to understand …” the werewolf began, to once again be interrupted.

This time by Ron Weasley whose anger had, once again, overcome what little common sense he had.

“Your wife? She’s not anybody’s wife – you’ve made her into a whore!” he screeched out, his voice breaking on the last word.

Draco Malfoy entered the room just in time to see Ronald Weasley hurling across the room, smashing into the thick, brick wall and sliding down to the ground, a small trail of blood staining the grey masonry.

“Severus!” Draco snapped out, to no avail.

The older wizard was gripped by his anger and he literally flew to where the dazed figure of Ron was trying to stand.

All the other Weasleys, together with Tonks and Remus, were struggling to release themselves from the wandless magic that bound them to their chairs.

Wrapping his hand around the youngest Weasley’s throat, Severus wrenched Ron from the floor and hauled him up until they were standing, eye to eye. Ron’s feet dangled a couple of inches off the floor.

“You will never refer to my wife in that way again,” he ground out, desperately holding himself back from banging the idiot redhead against the wall a few more times. “Never!”

“I think he understands,” came the sweet voice of Hestia Jones.

Draco swiftly crossed the room to lay a calming hand on Snape’s forearm. “This won’t solve anything,” he spoke quietly to the older Death Eater. “And, in truth, none of the Weasleys are worth this level of … passion.”

With that, Draco shot a look at George, who visibly winced.

“You obviously didn’t feel that way when you were writing your disgusting smut to Ginny!” Charlie scowled at the blonde wizard.

“Ginny?” Draco questioned, confused. He turned towards Charlie. “What are you talking about?”

Breathing deeply, Severus lowered the stunned Ron to the floor and slowly released his death grip on the boy, stepping away from the temptation to do further harm.

Hestia grasped Ron’s arm and, after examining the wound on his head, performed a quick healing charm before nudging him back to his seat.

Meanwhile all the Weasleys were glaring at Draco, except for George who looked embarrassed - as did Tonks.

Remus, on the other hand, kept a wary eye on Snape, watching with fascination as Severus began to compose himself, drawing in all the shimmering magic that surrounded him. With a final crackle, the magic disappeared, and Snape’s face was once again settled into its normal mask of sneering contempt.

“You insulted my sister,” Charlie continued on. “I demand satisfaction!”

Draco let out a very Snape-like snort. “I’d demand satisfaction too if I had an insult of a sister like yours, but that’s something you need to bring up with your parents, not me!”

“How dare you speak like that!” Molly gasped out.

“Well, it is my house,” Draco revealed. “I think I can speak anyway that I like!”

“Actually, it is my house now,” Snape contradicted the young Slytherin. “You gave it to me as a wedding present.”

Draco turned and raised one eyebrow. “Ah, yes. But as the weasel pointed out, you are technically not married yet, are you.”

“He will be shortly,” Minerva McGonagall interjected, her voice slightly slurred. “Once Hermione is healed.”

“Which brings me back to my original purpose of seeking out such imbecilic morons as yourselves,” Snape continued turning his attention to his captives.

“Snape,” Shacklebolt’s deep voice cut across the room warningly.

Severus looked up to see that the vast majority of the rebel Order had arrived sometime during his confrontation with Ron.

“This is not Order business,” he snapped out.

“Actually, it is,” replied a hard-faced Colin Creevey. “We need to know if we have traitors in our midst.”

    “Traitors!”

    “What do you mean?”

    “Are you talking to me?”

Snape, rage now under control, nodded to Kingsley and pulled back to stand unobtrusively in a dark corner of the room to watch the events unfolding before him.

“I’m talking to all of you!” Colin burst out over the din of Weasley protestations. “My brother is dead at the hands of your brother and son and you still try to tell us that he’s only ‘undercover’!”

“And you believe Draco?” Fred burst out. “He’s lying to save his own skin!”

“Really, Colin,” Molly interjected, “we know the death of your brother has devastated you, but to believe Draco that Percy did all that to him and then killed …”

“And why should we believe Percy?” George questioned softly, causing his family to stare at him in shock.

“George!” Ginny protested weakly. “Percy’s a prat, but he’s our brother!”

George ignored her and looked imploringly at Kingsley. “Two days ago Mad-Eye said he had broken the curse, but now they’re all back to how they were before. Why?”

“What are you talking about?” Bill questioned angrily.

    He was ignored.

“It is a deceptively simple spell with devastating consequences,” Kingsley revealed to George as the rest of the Order listened avidly. “It will only work if the people it is cast on want it to work.”

“I don’t understand,” Hestia admitted, her plump face furrowed in consternation. “What spell are they all under?”

“Basically, Percy somehow accessed his family, Remus and Tonks and cast a spell on them which made their desire to believe that he was innocent whereas Snape and Draco were … duplicitous,” Kingsley clarified.

The whole room was silent as the ramifications of this statement were absorbed.

“So, they had to want Professor Snape and Draco to be traitors,” Tracey Davis, who had moved over to stand with Snape and Draco stated contemptuously. “And of course, being the Gryffindors that they are, the Slytherins have to be evil!”

“Well, he did kill Dumbledore,” Draco murmured for her ears only.

Tracey grinned at Draco who, mimicking their former Head of House, raised one eyebrow in response.

“So what do we do about this spell then?” Dedalus Diggle burst in, bouncing up and down on the balls of his feet. “We can’t have the Weasleys et al. planning to try and ‘save us’ from Snape and Draco all the time. And we don’t want them to fall under Percy’s spell again!”

“That is an internal matter for you to solve,” Snape responded, shifting slightly out of the shadows. “Draco and I have more than enough to do, thank you very much.”

“True,” Hestia replied. “Leave it to us.”

Snape nodded. “Then I will take my leave and see to my wife.”

He swept from the room whilst Draco and the remaining members of the Order tried to decide what to do with their present conundrum.

“In the mean time, we shall keep the Weasleys separate from us all,” Minerva decided. “Remove any communication devices from them and …”

“Professor!” Bill objected. “You can’t do that – you need us!”

“Yes, we do,” the recovering headmistress spat out. “But we need Severus and Draco more!”

“Furthermore, those two need to be able to feel that they can come and go safely here,” Elphias Doge wheezed out. “This place needs to be a haven for them, not a hell.”

Silence once again reigned in the room.

“Is it true what Hermione said about Percy and Penelope?” Ginny’s voice was very small in the silence.

“There is no point in my replying,” Draco stated loftily. “You are predisposed to not believe me.”

    “It’s true.”

Remus turned to look at Tonks in surprise. She shrugged. “Like George, I haven’t fallen back under Percy’s spell,” she explained. “In fact, I think the only reason it affected me was due to my pregnancy. Hormones are hell,” she concluded, stroking her rounded stomach.

Draco let out a bark of laughter.

Everyone turned and looked at him.

“Sorry,” he explained, looking far from repentant. “But I guess that would explain Granger’s – I mean Mrs Snape’s – behaviour over the last few weeks.”

Minerva sighed loudly. “Her pregnancy was not meant to be made common knowledge yet,” she admonished.

But Draco did not even hear her – he was too busy smirking triumphantly at the tortured, yet slightly dazed, expression on Ron Weasley’s face.
