A knock at the front door tore Draco's attention away from the Daily Prophet as he turned and nodded to a near by house elf, who bowed profusely and left the room. Hoping that it wasn't one of last week's guest come to once again ask of Granger's health, Draco could not doubt that the whole thing had been a disaster, though it was quite obvious that a great many of his guests had found Granger charming.
His great grandmother's second cousin, Cidron Crump, had demanded that Draco tell him where Arthur was sent, so that he may go to him and show him '"The true meaning of pain'". He had said this of course, while pointing an old crooked finger in Draco's face, and leaning heavily on his cane.
And Draco dare not release that demon on even his most hated of enemies.
His Great Uncle Barty had also stopped by the manner, and refused leave until he saw for himself that Granger was alive and well. He then proceeded to tell her the most unwelcome of stories concerning Draco at the age of 4 and a thistle that had been unceremoniously launched into his bum. Granger had simply laughed and said that she was looking forward to those days with her own child.
She really was something. In all that she has been through, she never seemed to falter. She was strong and loyal, and she was...she was beautiful. She was everything that a Malfoy's bride should be.
Everything except her blood.
Draco often found himself cursing his family, and their ridiculous "morals". He found himself doubting the whole concept, even after the years and years his father had drilled into his brain that a Pureblood was indeed, the superior. Granger was smarter than any pureblood that he's ever met. And stronger, too. He couldn't help but think...
His father was dead, and now Draco was the last Malfoy. He was the lord of the manner, and he was the one who must carry on the line. Who was there left to tell him who he could marry? His other relatives held no power over him, and it wouldn't be any problem with them all believing that she was a pureblood anyway.
Draco felt a smile spread over his face. He was starting to get used to smiling.
It happened whenever he thought about her.
About Hermione...
"Pardon me, sir!" said the high pitched voice of the house elf who stood in the doorway. "My Lord! She insisted that she see you! I told her, I did. I told her that you didn't want to be bothered!"
Draco's smile grew wider. "Send her in," he said to the elf, who nodded and moved aside so that she could enter. Draco's smile quickly turned to a scowl as he watched not Hermione walk through the door, but Pansy.
She looked terrible, which was obviously not her intention. She had on some sort of skin tight red dress with a slit that went up to her thigh and a plunging neck line, which almost revealed her whole breast. Her hair was done up in some sort of twisted knot with strands left dangling over face, and it only succeeded in making her look like a drown rat. She had too much make up on, it almost looked caked to her skin. Draco did not doubt if he scraped his nails down her face, it would leave deep groves in her foundation.
"How dare you show yourself in my home!?" He yelled at her. She took a step back in fear, but quickly composed herself as she walked calmly to the couch where Draco sat and lowered herself beside him.
"Draco, I have come here to offer you something, and I will not leave until it's done," she said in a purr. Draco felt his temper rise as he pushed himself up from the couch and glared down at her.
"You have nothing to offer anyone! You are a whore and a traitor, and if I ever see you again, I'll make sure that your locked up for far more than a day in Azkaban." She visibly shuddered and he could tell that she was reminded about that one night she had to spend there, and he was sure that one more would be too much for her to bare.
She looked down at her feet, and it almost seemed as if she was to submit, but then she turned her gaze back up to Draco and her jaw set. She stood up and faced him.
"Draco! This is your last chance. I can forgive you! All you need to do is send away that dirty mudblood and her filthy child and then we can make a life together! A pure life! The life that your father always wanted you to have!"
Without warning, she threw herself at him and pressed her lips firmly onto his.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Hermione pushed herself off up from the table and brushed bread crumbs off the top of her ridiculously large stomach.
She couldn't help but admit that one of the best parts about living in this place, was the never ending supply of food. She was beginning to believe that the kitchen was charmed to have whatever food that the hungry person desires.
It was a pregnant woman's dream come true.
Hermione turned her attention to the clock on the wall and saw that it was time for her walk through the gardens. The baby was due any day now, and the head nurse elf demanded that Hermione have someone present with her at all times. Her eyes flashed to the corner of the room where a grim faced house elf stood, waiting to follow her to the gardens. Hermione smiled and turned to him.
"I think I'll ask Draco to walk with me today," she told him. "Will you please take me to him?"
The house elf shook his head and looked up at her with wide eyes. "Oh no, miss! Lord Draco does not like to be bothered while reading his paper, no he doesn't! Lord Draco will have my head!"
Hermione smiled and walked passed him. "Well I guess I'll just have to go there alone then," she sighed. She heard the little house elf yip as he scampered passed her and began to lead her to Draco.
"I cannot leave you alone, Miss! Nurse elf is almost as scary as Lord Draco!" he pipped. Hermione smiled and slowly followed behind him.
She heard Draco arguing with someone in a low, attractive voice before she had even reached the door. She paused when another voice made itself present. A feminine voice.
She peaked her head around the corner to look into the room, and she felt her heart drop to the floor.
Draco was in there with Pansy. And they were kissing.
She pushed herself away from the door and waddled as fast as she could toward the garden. Somewhere along the way she had lost the elf that was supposed to be watching her, but she didn't notice.
How could he!? she silently screamed over and over again in her mind. A sharp pain suddenly cut through her abdomen and she gasped and clutched her stomach. It was gone quickly though, so she pushed herself up right again and exited the manner.
Tears were pooling in her eyes as she lowered herself onto a bench and stared at an empty place beside her feet. She found that the roses held no beauty for her today. Her heart felt heavy and dark and the tears finally turned to too many as they broke lose and began to flow down her face. Her hands were lying limply in her lap and she couldn't understand when it was that Draco had turned from the man she hated above all, to the man she loved.
Yes, she did love him. It was obvious to her now. It was painfully obvious.
She loved a man who would never love her in return. He despised her and her dirty blood. She was worthless in his eyes. He was going to join with a woman who not one week earlier, had tried to kill her.
Well she'd be damned before she'd let her child live in a place that housed that woman. She should have left him that night with Harry and Ron. She should have never been so naive as to think that just possibly...he felt the same way about her as she did about him.
Hermione clenched her eyes close as her stomach tightened again, and then she stood and walked toward her room.
She was getting her things and she was leaving.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Draco gasped as Pansy threw herself at him. He stood in a shocked state for a few seconds before he grabbed her around the arms and pushed her down to the couch. He wiped a hand over his mouth and growled at her.
"If you..." his voice was shaking with anger, "ever touch me again...I will KILL you." Pansy stared up at him with wide eyes as he leaned down to grab her upper arm and pulled her up off of the couch and lead her to the front door.
"That 'filthy child' you were talking about is MY child, and that 'dirty mudblood' will be my wife! You wanna talk about pure, Parkinson?! Hermione Granger is pure. She is more pure than a dirty washed up whore like you could ever hope to be." His grip tightened around her arm and he took pleasure in seeing her flinch. The doors flew open as they reached them and he pushed her outside. "If you ever come near me or my family again, you will regret the day you were born." The doors slammed in her face.
Draco turned and headed toward Hermione's room.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Draco paused for a moment outside of Hermione's door and tried to compose himself. He had decided not to tell her about Pansy's visit.
After running a hand through his shoulder length hair, he calmly knocked on her door. He barley had time to pull his fist away before the door flung open and a hand flew at him and stuck him hard against the cheek.
"YOU ARE A CREEP MALFOY!" Hermione screamed with tears running down her face. She didn't miss a beat as she quickly turned and pointed her wand toward her wardrobe. The doors slammed against the wall beside them as her clothes came flying out and packed themselves neatly inside of her trunk. "I'm leaving. WE'RE leaving."
Draco stumbled in the room with a large red print on his face. "Wh-what the hell? Hermione, what are you talking about?" Hermione paused and closed her eyes.
My mind is still playing tricks on me...I could have sworn I just heard him say my name. Not mudblood, not Granger...but Hermione.
Her eyes clenched shut as another wave of pain shuddered through her stomach. Draco stepped toward her with concern on his face.
"Hermione? What's wrong? Is it the baby?" he asked quickly. Hermione pulled her arm from his grasp and took a step away from him.
"Why do you care!?" she screamed at him. "Aw yes, you wouldn't want anything to be wrong with your heir, now would you? Your precious bloodline..." She bent over and clenched her stomach.
"Stop this! Something's wrong, you're in pain! You need to lie down!" He yelled at her.
"I've never been anything to you, have I Malfoy?! Nothing more than a carrier of your child. I've never been worthy. Poor little mudblood," she gasped as she lifted her wand and charmed her trunk to follow in the air behind her. She struggled as she walked to the door way, but before she was able to make it out Draco ran forward and grabbed her hand.
"Now listen to me," he said sternly with anger and concern flashing through his deep grey eyes. "I don't know what made you think that I don't care about you, but this isn't the time to throw a fit-"
"-THROW A FIT!? You want me to throw a fit, MALFOY?! Because I will. Merlin help you I'll...." Hermione's eyes widened as she gasped and her wand fell from her hands. She looked down at her feet to see a puddle of clear liquid pooling on the ground. A sharp pain bit through her entire body as she felt a scream tear through her throat and Draco's arms wrap tightly around her falling body.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Draco found himself once again pacing back and forth outside of Hermione's room. He'd stop every once and a while and cringe when he heard Hermione scream.
Snape was inside the room, conjuring up potions for her pain, but it didn't sound like they were working. The nurse elf had brought a great many of the Malfoy's into the world, but Draco couldn't help but regret not taking her to St. Mungos. The elf had said that there was no time, that the baby was coming now. She'd then commanded Draco to leave the room because of his fussing, and after catching a glimpse of the "magic of childbirth", he didn't really complain while he was led to the door.
Draco paused. Something was wrong. He could feel it.
He pushed the doors open and gasped when he looked toward the bed and saw it covered in Hermione's red blood. She was lying with her head to the window, and he could see the paleness of her skin and the way it seemed difficult for her to keep her eyes open. His gaze flashed to Snape who sat exhausted in a chair in the far corner of the room. He looked up at Draco and shook his head.
"I gave her every potion I could. None of them seemed to of helped. She stopped screaming, but I think it's only because she's too tired to continue any longer..." Draco had never seen his godfather look so regretful in his life. He turned to the house elf who was warming a pot of water over the fire.
"What's wrong with her!?" He demanded. The house elf shook her head and sighed.
"Lord Draco! She's loosing too much blood! We need to get the baby out right now, but I fear for her..." Draco's eyes widened as he turned back to Hermione and bent down beside her.
After taking her hand into his own, she slowly turned her gaze to him, and he couldn't help the gasp that escaped his throat. He'd never seen her look so defeated before.
She looked as if death was creeping over her shoulder.
"It's alright, Hermione. Everything is going to be fine. We just need to get the baby out now, and then we'll all be together." he said, his voice shaking slightly.
Hermione smiled, and it looked painful for her to do so. "You were right, Draco..." Draco gasped as her hand fell from his as her eyes slowly closed. "You really were the one to kill me...."
