Chapter 15
Easing off again, she sighed in disappointment. “I’ve had one eighty out of her, but she will most likely do nearer to two fifty. Bit better than a muggle car or a broom eh?”
“I disagree, what speed are we doing now?”
“Sixty and I am not going any slower. Surely you’ve travelled on the Night Bus?”
“Once; I will never do so again. Sixty is fine thank you.”
Paula stayed at a steady sixty until they passed the outskirts of Hogsmead; she then pulled on a lever to the left of the dashboard and put her foot down again.
Severus was about to complain when he realised they were airborne. “Oh Gods, it’s the Weasley car all over again.” He moaned, clutching the sides of his seat.
“Ha ha! Kak told me about that, do not worry, I am a good mechanic. This baby is in pristine condition. Press that little green button in front of you.”
He eyed her sideways, a look of mistrust on his face. “Why? What will it do?”
“Just press it Severus.”
He leaned forward slightly and put his index finger to the button, then braced himself ready to duck or be thrown back into his seat again. He pressed it and was surprised when a small console popped up with a maze of lines and oddly shaped areas. “What is this?” He asked, curious now.
“Sat nav. It shows us where we are and gives us directions to where we want to be. It’s slightly modified though, helps to avoid the muggle aircrafts.”
“Aeroplanes? Can they see us?”
“No, only the wildlife can see us, that’s why I have the Sat Nav, it helps me keep a check on the airspace I am driving through.”
“Where are we headed anyway? I take it you do have somewhere in particular in mind.”
“South Wales. They have a small dragon sanctuary down there.”
“I know, but why there?”
“Seems the have a Welsh Green with problems. I have been asked to read it, see if there if anything I can do.”
“Read what, the dragon?” He asked incredulously.
“You wanted to lunch with me today Severus, so you could find out more about me, well this is one of those things you wanted to know. I am a soul searcher.”
Severus almost choked when the air he was inhaling caught in his throat, causing a coughing fit. Once recovered he turned to her, his eyes watering as he gulped down air. “Soul.” Cough. “searcher?” He croaked, coughing again.
“That’s right. Reach behind your seat, there’s a bottle of water.”
Severus located the bottle and took great swigs of it before he felt able to speak again. “But I thought you were here to teach defence. Soul searchers are extremely far and few between. I knew there was something more to you than meets the eye. I knew it.”
“Every five to seven generations a soul searcher is born. Mostly it is the males of the family who inherit this gift; I am only the fourth female in many generations of searchers to have been blessed with it. Or cursed, depending on how you look at it. There are others I believe, scattered across the globe, though I have never met one.”
“No, neither have I, until now that is. Does the Headmaster know of this?”
“Kak discovered it a couple of weeks after we first met, he is the one who taught me to use the gift, to control it. As a chavo, I would read others instinctively, but I did not understand that I was doing so. My grandmother was a dukker, I believed I what I did was merely a form of dukkering.”
“Paula what is chavo? And this ducking thing?”
Paula laughed. “As a chavo Severus, a child. And it is Dukkering, not ducking. Fortune telling, my grandmother had the sight and she was good at it, I am not. I will try not to speak Romane, but it is difficult. I have always done so.”
“I do not mind, in fact I find it quite fascinating, so long as you remember to translate. Now this soul searching, I have heard of it, though never actually studied the subject. What is it exactly that you do?”
“Ah, to tell all would take too long. Simply put, I can read souls, find lost souls, know what they are feeling, what they hide, even experience their emotional pain. I can help restore that which they believe irreparable, help them become strong once again. If a soul is deeply troubled when the host dies, I can also help recover and redeem that soul, providing the passing was recent. That is the bare bones of it Severus, there is much more to it than that, but to try and explain it all to you would take a very long time and to be honest, I am not certain that I could.”
Severus let out a long breath as he processed what she told him. “That is some gift. You say the Headmaster taught you this?”
“No, I could already do it, kak taught me how to use what I have.”
“And you do this with animal’s right? Only magical animals, or muggle animals as well?”
“Sometimes I read animals, though not very often. I have read dogs, cats and mostly grast. Horses. My grandfather was a gry-engro. A horse dealer like many of my kind.”
“Is that one of the reasons you are at Hogwarts, to search the souls of the magical beasts in the Forbidden Forest perhaps.”
“No, I am here to help ensure good will prevail over evil Severus. My task is to make certain that those who need to fight, can, and those who wish to, will do so efficiently and without loss of life. reading and strengthening the souls of those most at risk is part of that task.”
“What? You mean you are reading the students souls? Does the headmaster know that also?”
“He knows, that is why he asked me here. That and the fact I am extremely good at defence. You know already that I can defeat the Shilmulo, providing there are not too many.”
“Merlin, Circe, and the Gods preserve us. I have to wonder if it is magic that prevents your head from growing as large as one of Hagrid’s pumpkins.”
Paula scowled at him. “Are you trying to say I am big headed Severus? Because if you are, is it not a little like the cauldron calling the kettle black? I am not boasting, merely answering your questions. You yourself are not averse to blowing your own trumpet at times.”
“Touché.” He conceded. “I apologise. So the students are quite happy to let you … how do you search someone’s soul?”
“No one knows when I read them Severus and I do not ask, I merely do. As to how, I do not know. It is like asking you how you think, how you breathe.”
Severus fell silent, once more processing what she had told him.
“Oh we’re here. Look, down there.” Paula said after they had been airborne for about an hour, turning the wheel and veering sharply as the hearse dropped at a remarkable speed.
‘Oh shit not again.’ He thought, closing one eye and gripping the sides of his seat. ‘We are going to die, I know it.’
