Okay, I’m gonna spoil you. Chapters 15 & 16 right now.
Chapter 15
Severus found himself quite irked that he was not included in these meetings, and even more annoyed that he was not invited to join them for supper, at least occasionally. He had no idea that Kathy thought he disliked her, even though he’d given her no reason to think otherwise.
He began making a habit of being near the door whenever Albus entered her rooms, and frequently worked late, waiting for him to re-emerge in the hopes of getting a glimpse of the woman inside.
Each time he did this he was filled with self loathing, this was not like him at all. He did not hang around doorways simply to catch a glimpse of a pretty face. He wasn’t a teenager any more, he was a grown, mature wizard, so why the hell wasn’t he acting like one?”
“Kathy, would you mind inviting Severus to join us for supper tomorrow evening. I really would appreciate a second opinion on our progress so far.”
“Kathy didn’t see the brief sparkle in his eyes as he waited for a reply. “Severus? Albus I don’t know if that’s a good idea, he doesn’t think much of me. I… we got off to a bad start, and it just got worse from there.”
“All the more reason to start building bridges, so to speak. Severus is not a bad man Kathy, difficult at times I grant you, but he risked a lot to rescue you , and even though he might not show it, he is a very sensitive person. His feelings are easily hurt, even if he hides it well.”
“Well if you’re sure, but he won’t come, he doesn’t even like me.”
“I think you might be surprised.” Albus said quietly, too quietly for Kathy to hear.
When Albus left that evening, Kathy followed him to the door.
Severus was surprised, normally she would hang about in the background until Albus closed the door behind him. This time however she lingered, watching him uncertainly.
“Kathy has a request to make of you Severus.” The old wizard said as he entered the dungeons corridor. “Goodnight both of you.”
‘Me?‘ Kathy gulped as the door swung shut, she’d expected Albus to ask Severus, now he was looking at her expectantly and her voice box had seized up.
Severus watched her mouth open and close several times without making a sound and it intrigued him. “Is there a problem Mrs Ripley?” He asked smoothly, his dark eyes finally able to drink her in.
“Problem?” She croaked, and cleared her throat. Blimey, did he have to look at her like that, it was indecent. “No, no problem. I just wondered… Albus thought… do you want to come for tea tomorrow… with me I mean, and Albus… in here… my rooms, erm kitchen?” There, she’d said it. Now he’d either laugh at her or tell her to get lost.
“I would like very much to dine with you tomorrow evening Mrs Ripley. Thank you for asking me.”
“Right then. Tomorrow yeah? Yeah. Bye.” She quipped, dashing back into her room and closing the door. “Bloody hell.” She clapped a hand on her mouth. “Bloody hell. I can’t believe I just did that. I‘m a huzzy, a brazen huzzy.”
Severus stared at the door for a moment, completely bemused by her reaction, then he chuckled. It was most likely the first time she’d ever asked a man to tea other than Albus, and the era she’d grown up in did not encourage forwardness in females. She probably thought asking a man to her home for tea was tantamount to dancing naked down a crowded street. His affirmative reply certainly seemed to take her by surprise. He was looking forward to tomorrow evening.
Severus wanted to make an impression on Kathy, but he did not want to go over the top and scare her off. He picked out a set of plain dress robes, looked at his hair in the mirror and fastened it back in a ponytail. After studying his profile from both sides he removed it, deciding it was too much. Then he sniffed at the two bottles of aftershave he possessed, and decided to leave that on the shelf too. No point making himself too conspicuous. He wondered what she was making, the smells had filtered through as usual and he thought lamb might be on the menu.
At seven sharp, he knocked on her door.
“Severus, come in, I didn’t expect you to knock. Where’s Albus?”
“I would imagine he’ll be here momentarily. Something smells nice, what are we having?”
“Shepherds pie, you do like shepherds pie don’t you?”
“I do, though I imagine yours will taste much nicer then what the elves provide.”
Kathy blushed at the compliment. A tapping at the door got their attention and Severus opened it to admit an owl.
“Cripes! Where did that come form?” Kathy asked in surprise.
Severus removed the small scroll from its leg and it flew away. “It would appear that Albus cannot make supper this evening. He sends his apologies and begs us to continue without him.”
“Oh.” Kathy was disappointed, she needed Albus here so that Severus’ attention wouldn’t be focused solely on her.
Severus on the other hand was not so surprised. He knew Albus well, and his penchant for arranging other peoples lives, but as much as he had looked forward to spending some time with this woman, he resented Albus for setting them up like this. Still, he may as well take advantage of the situation, it wasn’t often he was given the chance to spend time alone with a young, attractive female. “Would you prefer that I left Mrs Ripley?”
“Stop calling me Mrs, Kathy’s fine, and no, you don’t have to go. Besides, it would be a waste of good food, I can’t eat it all on my own, even if I save most of it for tomorrow.”
“Then please, lead the way.” Not the most endearing of welcomes, but he was willing to overlook it, considering she was attempting to cover up the fact she was nervous about being alone with him.
He followed her into the kitchen, where the table was set for three, and held out a chair for her.
“Oh, thank you. I err, Albus doesn’t usually, you know, do that.”
“I am not Albus, please, allow me to assist you.”
Kathy took her seat and Severus pushed the chair in for her. Even David didn’t use to do this, still, it was nice.
She removed the lid from a tureen and ladled out soup for them both.
“Is this quail? It really is delicious, did you make it yourself also?”
“Yes, it’s only the leftover carcasses from yesterday tea. Albus had them sent from the kitchens, I never even heard of it before then. I admit I didn‘t like it much, but it makes a nice soup.”
‘Why did I just say that? He already thinks I’m uncivilized as it is.’
“Quail is not to everyone’s tastes. I cannot stand grouse.”
“Grouse, I’ve never heard… erm I’ve never tried it.”
“As I said, not to everyone’s taste, particularly when it comes to game foods.”
“I don’t mind rabbit, we used to have one on a Sunday sometimes. Me and David. Once he got a ham cheap from work and I’m babbling again. Sorry.”
“Not at all Kathy, feel free to talk about whatever you wish.”
Her eyes widened slightly when he said her name. ’Oh oh. Steady girl. Just because he has a nice voice, that’s no reason to get excited. But it does sound nice when he says my name.’ Kathy felt herself go pink and lowered her head, concentrating on the soup.
Severus allowed himself a brief smile, he’d noticed her reaction, no matter how much she tried to hide it. He was quite pleased with himself.
By the time they’d eaten the shepherds pie she was more relaxed, their conversation covered more mundane things, his classes, her days at school, he even found himself laughing with her at one point over a melted cauldron of all things, and wondered where it had come from.
She brought a pot of coffee into the living room and they discussed what Albus had taught her so far, the books she’d read, and what Albus expected of her over the Christmas holidays. She told him that Albus was particularly interested with her relationship with Tomtom when they were children. “Albus was his teacher, did you know that?”
“I did, he was mine also.”
“Blimey, how old is he? Forget I asked that. You know I’m going to feel really daft holding onto a tree, do you think anything will happen?”
“I have no idea, but I am eager to find out. Perhaps we could try tonight, while it is dark. That way of nothing happens, no one will see you, other than me of course, and I have done enough strange things in my life to not be affected by what may or may not happen.”
