The Grindelwald Legacy
And another, just for Tiff.
Chapter 15
“Oh... my... God!” Lucy stared at the immense castle set in acres and acres of grounds. An endless wall seemed to stretch both ways, one side breaking where a great, black lake flowed into the grounds towards the castle. She looked up at the large, wrought iron gates, flanked each side by tall pillars, both topped by winged boars.
A huge forest was set to the right of the grounds and that too seemed endless.
But it was the castle itself that held her attention. She stared at it through the gates, her mouth open, chewing gum falling out and dropping to the ground.
Maxi gave several loud, deep woofs while she gawked, entranced at the place.
Argus Filch, who was not happy at the best of times, narrowed his eyes at the sight of the komondor. No way was he opening the gates while that great beast was present. Trouble was the stupid girl with it didn’t seem able to hear him as he shouted at her to get rid of the hound so he could open the gates.
Maxi gave Lucy a shove to get her attention. As soon as she saw the caretaker, Maxi gave her a soft bark and ran back down the road for home. He had a nice juicy bone waiting for him in the back yard.
“Oh Hi.” Lucy removed the plugs from her ears. “Sorry, I’ve never seen anywhere quite this big before.”
Filch just grunted and opened the gate. To be honest he thought the woman must be 2 Knuts short of a Sickle. He new about the portable singing machines by the amount he’d commandeered from muggleborn students who unwittingly tried to make them work when they started at Hogwarts. For some reason this young woman seemed to think she was listening to hers.
Lucy entered and frowned slightly at the grumpy, hunchbacked old man, wondering what his problem was. “Lucy Grindelwald.” She offered a hand.
Ignoring the offered hand, Filch sneered, showing blackened, misshapen teeth, then locked the gates and headed for the castle, all the while grumbling loudly at having to traipse all the way across the grounds to admit dull witted females when he could be pursuing other, more important tasks.
Lucy stared after him for a moment, unable to believe how vulgar the man was, then realised he moved rather niftily for an old bloke and hurried after him. “I’m not dull witted.” She snapped angrily once she caught up. “And you’re a very bad mannered person.”
Filch gave her a snide look but did not stop his grousing about cheeky young chits as he led her up the steps to the castle entrance.
Even though Lucy found him extremely unpleasant, she felt a bit of a pity pang when she noticed him struggling to push open the enormous double doors. But she wasn’t about to let him know that. “Maybe you should just retire, you certainly look well past it.” She sniped back while pushing the door open for him.
Filch was about to make some scathing remark when the headmaster appeared.
“Ah Miss Grindelwald, how nice you could make it. You are early, I was not expecting you for another half hour at least.”
“I took Maxi for a walk first, but he seemed eager to get back so, here I am.”
“Have you eaten? I was about to have breakfast.”
“I had some toast thanks. Gran tried to force a big fry-up on me but to be honest, I was too nervous to eat much.”
“Then perhaps you would care to join me, it will give you the opportunity to meet some of your Professors.”
Lucy took a deep breath before they entered the Great Hall. She was not looking forward to this at all. If Snape and the gate man were anything to go by, she was in for a rough time of it when she met the rest of the teachers.
As soon as Albus opened the doors she gasped. The first thing she saw was the high ceiling, only it wasn’t. “There’s no roof.” She exclaimed, staring up at the cloudless sky above her.
Albus laughed softly. “There is a roof I assure you, it is merely charmed to allow us to see the sky, night and day. It really is most beautiful of an evening.”
“Awesome.” She responded. Her gran had shown her so much magic in the short time she’d been here that she did not question what he told her, but she was still astounded at the many things that could be done with magic.
Lucy had also been privately practicing more with her other talent. She discovered there were quite a few things she could do merely by concentrating on what she wanted. As yet she hadn’t mentioned it to her gran, instead letting the old woman teach her how to perform magic with a wand. After Charlie’s reaction, she didn’t want to be considered abnormal when she started school proper, she’d had enough of that at her last two schools and the children’s homes.
She suddenly realised that someone was speaking to her. “Sorry. The roof.” She apologised lamely.
No one seemed to mind as she was introduced to Professor Vector, who taught Arithmancy, Professor Trelawney, divination, Madam Pince, the librarian. “And of course you already know Professor Snape.” Albus said. “Miss Lucy Grindelwald.”
Lucy’s eyes flicked to the unfriendly face of the potions master. ’Please don’t let him be the first to teach me.’ She thought, matching him glare for glare.
The other staff members greeted her politely. Albus had already informed them about her and they’d got over the initial shock that another Grindelwald existed and was coming here for extra curricular learning.
She found herself sitting between the Professor Vector and the librarian, both of whom instantly began bombarding her with questions about her whereabouts until now.
Lucy explained she lived in Manchester for the last five years, and before that she lived in Essex. She did not mention living in children’s homes for all of her life, having discovered long ago that some people tended to think there was something wrong with you of you weren’t adopted at a relatively young age.
Professor Vector was her teacher for the first week, after that the Professor was leaving until next term.
Lucy enjoyed the lessons with her, they were challenging but Vanessa herself was a good teacher and Lucy liked her. They used first names in the classroom, and because Lucy already had an exemplary mathematical background, the one to one tutoring soon brought her up to third year level.
Lucy also discovered that the portraits spoke. It freaked her out at first, then just as she was getting used to them she met the Bloody Baron, Slytherins resident ghost, and suddenly talking portraits seemed insignificant.
At the end of her first week she was walking through the main hall, having just managed to negotiate her way down the staircase on her own for the first time and passing the entrance to the dungeons corridor.
The Baron emerged through the stonework right in front of her.
Her first reaction was to run in the opposite direction screaming, but the Bloody baron, delighted at having someone to frighten, shot forward and sailed right through her.
Lucy felt chilled to the bone, nothing could prepare her for an experience like this.
When the Baron came at her a second time she dove to the side, hoping to avoid it and crashed straight into none other than Severus Snape.
“Oof! What the hell are you trying to do you foolish girl?” He clutched his chest where her shoulder had rammed into him.
“I’m sorry.” Lucy said. She was on the floor holding her knee, her own landing was extremely painful and her eyes roamed wildly, looking for the ghost. “Where is it?”
“If you mean the bloody Baron, he’s gone. I however am still here and in great discomfort because of you.”
“Join the club, and it wasn’t my fault, it was that ghost. It tried to possess me or something. Shit my knee hurts.”
“Had you been sorted, you would have lost your house a great deal of points by now Miss Grindelwald, both for your language and your assault on my person. Might I suggest you get up and go to wherever you were heading, and stay clear of me from now on.” Severus gave her one last glare and stalked off.
He stopped when he heard a sob behind him. “For heavens sake, now what is it?” He turned ready to make some further comment when he realised the girl was still on the floor, her face rather pale.
Lucy tried to get up and as soon as she moved, pain shot up and down her right leg from the injured knee. She let out a cry and slumped back to the floor. “My knee, it hurts.”
Severus walked back to where she half sat, half lay and crouched down beside her. “Let me see.” He sighed. The last thing he needed was to play nurse to the clumsy chit.
There was a small amount of blood on her trouser leg that was steadily growing. “It’s most likely just grazed, straighten your leg.” He barked.
Lucy tried and nearly passed out with the pain. “Can’t.” She gasped, paling more and starting to feel sick with the pain.
