Over the next two months Draco kept his promise; sort of. There were a few incidences where he ragged on Harry, Ron, or Hermione, but he left them alone for the most part. Harry didn’t let it bother him because it seemed like Draco was trying.
One October evening Harry and Ron were up late doing their charts for Divination when an owl tapped on the dormitory window. It wasn’t Hedwig, so Harry wondered who this owl was from. It was Ron who got up and opened the window and took the letter that was attached to the owl’s leg. “It’s for you Harry,” he announced.
“Who would be writing to me?” Harry wondered out loud as he took the letter and opened it. As it turned out, the letter was from Lucius. It was short and sweet; mostly Lucius asking if Draco was behaving himself. Harry groaned and put his head in his hands. He didn’t know how to answer. If he were to tell the truth, would Lucius punish Draco for the few times Draco had said something nasty? Would Draco then get angry at Harry and go back to being his old self?
Harry tried to forget about it until breakfast the next morning when he could talk about it with both Ron and Hermione. Ron may have been his best friend, but Hermione was the more practical and level headed one.
“I say you should tell him the truth,” Hermione answered quietly. “I mean, Draco has made a few comments, but it’s always been around other Slytherins. He can’t exactly start being nice to us without his house mates getting suspicious.”
Harry nodded in agreement, wondering why he hadn’t thought of that. “You’re right, I should just tell Lucius the truth, including the fact that Draco seems to be trying. The one thing I don’t understand is that he made a comment at the end about me seeing my dad soon.”

The whole castle was filled with excitement the day that students from the three other schools were to arrive. Classes were let out a half hour early so they could all greet their guests. Then everyone filed into the Great Hall for the welcoming feast. The students from Beauxbatons settled at the Ravenclaw table, while those from Durmstrang sat with the Slytherins. Dumbledore welcomed them, and then the feast began.
When everyone had finished, Dumbledore stood and welcomed Ludo Bagman and Barty Crouch. They had organized the events, and would be on the panel of judges. “And last but not least, I would like to introduce Chris Rodgers. He will be in charge of the events, and the competitors’ safety,” the Headmaster announced.
James took a deep breath and marched into the hall wearing the same disguise he had used at the Quiddich World Cup. Hundreds of eyes were on him as he greeted Dumbledore, and moved to take the empty seat between Minerva and Severus, both of whom knew who he really was.
Dumbledore waited for the applause to die down before he brought out the Goblet of Fire. It looked like an ordinary wooden goblet except that blue flames were shooting out the top. Dumbledore explained to everyone that the goblet was going to be the impartial judge that would select the champions, and everyone would have twenty four hours in which to submit their name.
When they were dismissed for the evening Harry, Ron and Hermione stayed behind. Harry pulled his dad aside. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming here?” he demanded.
“Because I would’ve had to tell you about the tournament, which Percy pointed out a few times, we weren’t allowed to tell you about,” James answered. “This wasn’t planned originally either. Dumbledore asked me after the Dark Mark appeared at the World Cup. He wants another pair of eyes keeping watch for something fishy.”
Harry nodded in understanding. “I’m probably not going to get to spend much time with you though am I?”
James shook his head sadly. “Unfortunately the tournament is going to keep me pretty busy.”
Harry stayed with his dad for a few minutes longer before heading back to Gryffindor tower. James went with Dumbledore as he set the Goblet of Fire up in the entrance hall and drew an age line around it to make sure no one under seventeen could enter.

Even though the next day was Saturday, the students still got up early. They were hanging around the entrance hall to see who submitted their name. James spent most of his day either watching over the goblet or going over the plans for the first task. He was exhausted when he entered the Great Hall for dinner, and the selection of the champions.
Excitement was definitely in the air. James noticed that all through the meal the students kept glancing up at the staff table to see if Dumbledore was finished. James had gotten a headache from it. He was relieved when Dumbledore finally stood and had the goblet brought in.
The whole room watched in anticipation as red sparks shot out of the goblet along with a piece of parchment. Dumbledore caught the parchment and opened it. “The champion for Beauxbatons is Fleur Delacour,” he announced.
Everyone cheered as Fleur stood and made her way across the hall and went into a little side room to wait. Everyone went quiet as the goblet shot red sparks again and tossed out another piece of parchment. “The champion for Durmstrang is Viktor Krum,” Dumbledore announced.
Everyone cheered again, though not as loud as Karkaroff, the Durmstrang headmaster. Once Viktor had disappeared into the side room the Hogwarts students nervously waited to hear who their champion would be.
The Goblet of Fire shot red sparks and a third piece of parchment. Everyone in the room held their breath as Dumbledore grabbed the parchment to read it. “And the champion for Hogwarts is Cedric Diggory.”
The Hufflepuff table erupted in a fit of cheering. The rest of the Hogwarts students clapped as well, but they were less than enthusiastic. “Excellent,” Dumbledore said as he addressed the rest of the students. “Now we have our champions. I’m sure that even though some of you may be disappointed that you were not chosen, you will still support-“
He stopped in mid sentence as the Goblet of Fire came to life again. Everyone watched as another piece of parchment was shot into the air. Dumbledore grabbed it and just stared at it. “Harry Potter,” he spoke softly, a look of shock on his face.
Instead of applause, there was dead silence. Everyone just stared blankly at Harry, who sat frozen in his seat. “Harry Potter,” Dumbledore called out again, “come here.”
Hermione had to push Harry toward the front of the room and he walked to the little side room where the rest of the champions waited.
A knot was forming in James’ stomach as he got up and followed the other adults into the side room. He had been with Dumbledore when the age line was drawn. He knew Harry couldn’t possibly have submitted his own name. And then there was the fact that the Goblet of Fire was enchanted to select three champions, and somehow it had selected four. All of that added to the dream Harry had told him about made James very nervous.
The other Headmasters were not happy about what had happened. “If we had known about this we would have brought a wider selection from our own schools,” Karkaroff growled.
Dumbledore calmly turned to Harry. “Did you submit your name?” he asked.
Harry shook his head wildly. “No!” he answered.
“Did you ask an older student to submit it for you?”
“No,” Harry repeated.
James sighed sadly and took a seat by the fire. Harry looked so panic stricken. All James wanted to do was hug him and assure him everything was going to be all right, but he couldn’t, not with so many people around.
“But of course he is lying!” Madame Maxime cried out. “I have half a mind to take my students and leave!”
Dumbledore looked to Ludo Bagman and Barty Crouch. “You two are in charge of this. What do you think?”
“His name came from the Goblet of Fire,” Barty spoke confidently. “It is a binding magical contract. He must compete.”
James growled and stood up. “But he didn’t willingly enter into this magical contract!” he argued. “How can you possibly hold him to it?”
“It’s stated clearly in the rules,” Barty growled.
James mumbled something under his breath and stormed off. The two visiting Headmasters and their students weren’t far behind. “I wonder what’s got his wand in a knot,” Ludo said out loud, seemingly oblivious to the tension in the room.
Harry felt a little relieved that his father and Dumbledore both seemed to believe him. He couldn’t help but wonder who had submitted his name and why as he made his way up to Gryffindor tower.
