It was a week before Hermione regained full control of her mind. But she was determined to get back to her lover and their child. Hermione could feel her now, when Severus placed the bundle beside her. At her strongest she could manage to move a finger or two to touch the pink flesh.
The physical act of actually waking up was harder than regaining her other senses. It was almost two weeks before she could even manage to open her eyes. But when she did, Hermione could have cried all over again. There he was, her great bat of the dungeons, asleep in the chair beside her with their daughter cradled in his arms. Severus looked worse for the wear, tired and entirely too big for the chair he was folded into, but there was something else. A smug, content look on his face as the bundle cooed to him.
She tried to sit up, but it took more effort than she was expecting and she promptly fell back into bed.
“Madam, what exactly do you think you are doing?”
Hermione jumped.
“I was just…just…” she tried to smooth the blankets around her but it was no use.
“Just trying to get out of bed after two weeks in a coma? After being cut down the middle by a mad-man? After being locked away in a dungeon? Yes, that makes perfect sense.”
She stayed silent, smiling only a little after Severus raised an eyebrow in her direction. She wanted her baby, she almost told him so, if the bastard hadn’t already known what she wanted and got up to give it to her.
“What’s her name?” Hermione whispered, enjoying the weight of the baby against her chest. Their daughter was a curious little thing. ‘She has my eyes’ Hermione thought to herself. Her eyes and a cute button nose. She would be grateful for that as she got older. Hermione wondered if Severus had noticed.
“I didn’t want to name her without you” he whispered.
“Severus Snape, you’ve let our daughter live all this time without a name? What have you been calling her?”
Severus sat on the edge of the bed, and played with the edge of his robes. Hermione couldn’t help the giggle that escaped her, she wondered what people would think if they could see their professor squirming like a guilty child.
“Leaf” he said.
Hermione’s eyes narrowed. “You’ve called our daughter ‘leaf’…as in a plant?”
“You were in a coma,” he said accusatorily, “in any case I called her ‘little leaf’.”
Severus nudged the bundle with one long finger and it began to jiggle, it was a distraction technique, one Hermione suspected he would be using often but she didn’t care. Leaf was adorable, and wasn’t everyone calling their children by weird names these days?
More importantly, it was an attempt to be tender, something not always easy for her closed off lover. And Leaf wasn’t so bad; he could have called her something ridiculous like cookie. Hermione shuddered, she hated the nickname cookie.
“I think we should keep it,” she smirked at the horrified look on his face, “no really Severus, we should. We can give her a proper middle name in case she doesn’t like it—or ever wants a job.”
“I forbid it” Severus said.
“But I insist” Hermione reached for his hand and he softened. “You can name the next one.”
She didn’t mean for the words to slip out; their first child had been a surprise, she wasn’t even sure what his feelings were on the matter, and they weren’t even married yet. But Severus didn’t contradict her and Hermione didn’t shy away from her slip.
They had had an unlikely start, but what was meant to be was meant to be. Together they would full the world with brilliant little minds and fill their home with enough happy memories to drown out the bad. Hermione was under no illusions: Severus Snape would never be an easy man to live with, or to love, but by god she would try.
