A/N: I finally got Draco to stop being such a monopolizing diva and let me update something other than his stories... Sorry for the wait but I hope it was worth it.
It was the middle of the night when Harry woke up. He frowned some as he tried to figure out what exactly had woken him. He listened intently to the sounds of the night even as he slowly slipped his hand under his pillow to grab his wand. Waking up in the middle of the night with an incubus around was not the best of signs. Of course, he took a little bit of comfort in the fact that he hadn’t woken up blinded or with tentacles groping him. That would have been quite a bit worse.
There was a strange crackling sound and Harry’s frown grew even more. He reached to the side table slowly for his glasses while he pulled his wand out from under the pillow. His heart was thundering loudly in his chest and he had to make a conscious effort to try and calm himself. Panicking certainly wouldn’t help the situation any. He’d been in enough life or death situations to know that. The world came back into focus and he took a long slow look around his room. There was nothing that he could see that would cause such a strange noise.
The sound returned and Harry slowly slipped out of bed to stand. He was wearing more than he usually did, almost clothed fully, something he’d started doing in case of incubus attacks. He would take any bit of protection he could manage.
His eyes landed on the basinet in the corner and he realized the cracking sound could only be coming from that. He swallowed hard before forcing himself to move closer. Harry’s wand was still at the ready, not about to take it on faith that there was no danger to him.
The room seemed to become much larger than it truly was as he had to force himself to take each step. His palms were sweating and he absently rubbed one on the side of his pants. He had taken on Voldemort with less fear than came from getting closer to that basinet. What if the incu-baby attacked him just like the bigger one? He didn’t think he could handle that. “Stop being such a coward, Harry,” he told himself before taking a deep breath.
He finally made it to basinet and looked inside. His eyes widened at the sight of cracks radiating from one point on the egg’s smooth surface. He took a quick step back before he could stop himself. The damn thing was hatching. He swallowed again and quickly backed away. He had no idea what to do. Even if it didn’t attack him he’d never been around babies before.
Harry bolted from the room and over to the fireplace in the living room. Grabbing a handful of floo powder he tossed it into the flames that sprouted from a wave of his wand. The flames had barely turned green before Harry was calling out Ron and Hermione’s address and sticking his head into them.
“Ron! Hermione!” he called into their apartment as loudly as he could.
It took a few moments and another call before Hermione appeared, closing her bathrobe and looking a bit worried. “Harry, what is it?” she asked, dropping to her knees in front of the fire.
“The… the egg is hatching!” he explained, only fumbling a little in awkwardness. It was just not a sentence he thought he’d ever utter. Especially under these circumstances. “You have to come and help me!”
“Harry, calm down!” Hermione told him. “We’ll come right away. Just let me wake Ron and get some clothes on. We’ll be over in a flash.”
Harry nodded and pulled his head back into his own house. He stayed kneeling there for a moment, not sure what else to do besides wait for his best friends to arrive. His hand shook some as he brushed the soot from the fire out of his hair and off his face. He couldn’t hear the cracking from this far away and he wasn’t entirely sure if he was glad for that or not. He didn’t really want to know if the incubus had yet managed to break out of the egg or not.
A few moments later, that felt much longer to Harry than it was, the fire turned bright green again and Harry scrambled away from it. Hermione stepped out first followed only a moment later by Ron. “Alright, don’t worry, Harry,” Hermione said as Ron reached down to help him up.
Harry accepted the help without protest. “Yeah, we’re right here so that nothing’s going to happen,” Ron said before attempting to give a smile. Harry wasn’t particularly convinced by it but he appreciated the effort.
“How long has it been trying to get out?” Hermione asked as she made her way towards Harry’s room.
“Not sure… I just woke up right before I called you though,” Harry supplied. He wanted to go with Hermione but he ended up trailing behind several steps instead. As much as he didn’t want one of his best friends to be hurt or in possible danger he was not comfortable in that room with the hatching incu-baby either.
Hermione went straight over to the basinet though Harry was glad to see she had her wand in her hand. “Well, looks like it won’t be long,” she murmured before taking a step back. “It’s already nearly through the shell…”
“Oh great…” Ron muttered. “I’m sure Harry just loves to hear that, ‘mione.”
Hermione gave her husband a slight glare. “You’re not helping, Ron,” she stated before going back to where Harry was by the doorframe to his room. “Looks like there’s not much to do but wait until it’s finished…”
“Yeah, great…” Harry echoed nervously.
“Everything’s going to be fine,” Hermione insisted. “Do you want me to call, Remus? Or maybe Ron’s mum?”
Harry quickly shook his head. “No. It’s late and I don’t want to worry them,” he said as he stared at the basinet. The cracking was growing more insistent and a touch louder, which was hardly comforting. But Harry reminded himself that Hermione was probably right –as usual- there was probably nothing to be worried about. Most likely. He hoped.
After several minutes, Hermione murmured something about making some tea and headed off to the kitchen. “It’s just a kid…” Ron said, attempting to comfort his friend. “Even if it is an incubus kid. Probably won’t do anything but cry and squirm like any other kid.”
Harry nodded some. “Yeah… probably.”
It felt like an eternity to the savior of the wizarding world, but finally the cracking stopped. There was a loud cry and Harry felt all the air rapidly escape his lungs. Dear Merlin it was really there. Hermione was there before Harry could even make himself blink. “Oh… my,” Hermione breathed before shaking her head and grabbing a nearby towel.
“What is it, Hermione?” Ron asked, sounding a bit strangled.
Hermione glanced at them before turning her attention to what she was doing. “It’s just… he has green eyes,” she said as she picked up a surprisingly normal looking baby from the basinet to finish wiping off what looked to be bloody goo.
Harry’s eyes widened at the sight of emerald green eyes staring right back at him. The baby continued to cry even as Hermione cleaned it off and Harry was a bit disturbed to see it reaching for him with one chubby arm. “H-how does it have green eyes?” Harry managed to ask though he couldn’t tear his own from the baby.
Hermione shrugged some. “Maybe the incubus has green eyes,” she said. “It’s supposed to look just like him after all.”
Harry didn’t respond. In his mind he struggled to come up with someone other than himself with dark hair and bright green eyes like those. He failed miserably to think of anyone. But it wasn’t like he could plant an egg in his own belly! More than a little disturbed, Harry tore his eyes away and looked at nothing as Hermione finished taking care of the newborn.
