There was nothing for it; they were going
to have to go to the Ministry and get that locket. They wouldn’t go charging in
unprepared, of course. Harry had learned his lesson the night Sirius died. Severus
began brewing Polyjuice, and they took turns leaving the house and
snooping around outside the Ministry under Harry’s
cloak. They had to be very careful since the number of cloaked figures roaming
about across the street was growing.
On the kitchen table were
maps and notes of everything they’d found out. Severus added everything he
could, but the Ministry had no doubt changed quite a bit since he’d last been
there. He couldn’t leave the house, either, and that left him feeling rather
useless.
Harry had noticed the
change of mood, and one evening he went into Severus’ room to talk to him
before bed. As he stood outside the door he could hear Severus’ voice. It
sounded like he was talking to someone. Harry opened the door and Severus
quickly tossed aside the story book he was holding. “Didn’t anyone ever teach
you to knock?”
“It isn’t anything I
haven’t seen before,” Harry joked, and he picked up the book. “Reading
children’s stories to yourself?”
“No.” Severus scowled and
curled up his legs in a defensive manner. “What do you want, anyway?”
Harry sat on the edge of
the bed. “I only wanted to talk. You’ve been sulking. I’m concerned.”
Severus gave Harry a
funny look before motioning for him to scoot closer. “I just have a lot on my
mind, that’s all.”
“Like what?” Harry asked,
unable to resist leaning against the elder wizard.
“Lots of things,” Severus
said, not pushing Harry away.
Harry frowned. “I may be
a lot younger than you, but you can still talk to me. You’re worried about us
going into the Ministry, aren’t you?”
Severus didn’t answer
right away. “What if I am? It’s the last place you should be, and I can’t go
with you. I’ve become a useless lump, just as I thought I would.”
Harry reached over cautiously
to put a hand on Severus’ thigh. “Stop saying that. You are not useless, you’re
pregnant. You’ve been very helpful as a teacher. I’m scared, too, but we both
know why I have to do it.”
“I’d still feel better if
I could go with you.”
“Are you sure you’re not
a closet Gryffindor?” Harry mused. “You seem to be very keen on action.”
“Bite your tongue!”
Severus cried. “I am no such thing.”
Harry chuckled and shook
his head. “All right, if you’re sure…. It should at least make you feel a
little better knowing I can’t be killed.”
“Your friends can.”
Harry was a little
surprised. “You mean you actually care about them?”
Severus’ face scrunched
up. “No, but you do. I know how hard you’d take it if anything happened to
them.”
“Yeah,” Harry answered
quietly, knowing Severus was right. He’d never forgive himself if he lost them,
but he couldn’t stop them from helping him. He’d tried, and his friends could
be quite stubborn when they wanted to be.
Severus wrapped an arm
around Harry. “I honestly don’t know how you do it.”
“How I do what?”
“Let yourself care about
others. Everyone always ends up hurting you sooner or later, which is why I try
not to.”
“Not always. And even if
they do, isn’t the pain worth the good times? I mean, would you trade what time
you had with my dad for anything?”
A small smile appeared on
Severus’ lips. “No, I suppose I wouldn’t. I was truly happy when I was with
him.”
Harry moved so that he
was facing Severus, straddling his lap and looking him straight in the eye. “You
can be happy again. You just have to let yourself.”
Severus gazed back at
Harry, his expression unreadable. “You really are something else.” The elder
wizard shook his head.
“Is that a good thing?”
Harry asked, a knot forming in his stomach.
Severus answered by
pulling Harry in for a deep, passionate kiss. Harry steadied himself by putting
his hands on Severus’ shoulders, his nails dragging across Severus’ soft skin.
The two only broke contact long enough for Harry to pull his shirt off.
Severus’ hands reached to
slide up and down Harry’s exposed chest, one handing
grabbing onto a nipple and twisting it a little. Harry’s
skin flushed and his cock sprang to life, pressing against Severus’ belly. Harry
moved his lips to the sensitive spot on the front of Severus’ neck that always
seemed to drive him crazy, causing Severus’ head to fall back against the
headboard and his eyes to roll back.
Harry pulled away only
for a moment to unbutton his pants and free his dripping cock. He slid the
confining clothing off and tossed it on the floor with his shirt. Severus
pushed Harry back into a sitting position and moved so that he was on his
knees. He took Harry’s cock in his hand, then stuck his
tongue out and circled the head before slowly swallowing it all the way to the
base, causing Harry to inhale sharply and whimper in pleasure.
Severus bobbed up and
down, swiping his tongue in a zig-zag motion. Harry
closed his eyes and grabbed Severus’ hair, his hands curling into fists. His
eyes widened when Severus flattened his talented tongue and ground it against
the little indentation just under the head, occasionally probing the piss slit
a little, and once in a while circling the entire head again.
Harry’s
hands slid down to Severus’ shoulders and he was digging his nails in when
Severus slid the whole thing down his throat again. “Oooohhhh…”
Harry hissed.
Severus pulled back and
devoured Harry’s mouth again, letting him taste
himself. It wasn’t as bad as Harry had thought it would be. In fact, he kind of
liked it.
Then Severus turned
himself around so he was on all fours. Harry bit his lip and grabbed his slick
cock and pressed it against Severus’ puckered hole, teasing him a little before
pressing in all the way. Severus groaned and pushed his hips backward, his
muscles gripping the welcome invader.
Harry rocked his hips
back and forth slowly, leaning forward so that his chest was resting on
Severus’ back. He pressed his lips to the back of Severus’ neck and dragged his
teeth lightly down Severus’ spine, causing him to cry out. Harry reached around
to grab Severus’ cock and stroked it in time with his thrusts.
It didn’t take long for
Harry to spill his load inside Severus with a loud cry. Seconds later Severus
came all over the bed and unceremoniously flopped over, panting heavily. “I
needed that,” he mumbled before casting a cleaning spell.
Harry curled up beside
him, his eyelids drooping. “Me too. But, just so we’re
clear, what did this mean?”
Severus shook his head. “It
means you know how to say the right thing at the right time. Now shut up and go
to sleep.”
Harry snuggled up next to
Severus, a wide grin on his face. He was finally getting somewhere, it seemed. His
hand came to rest on Severus’ belly, and he lay there a while just feeling his
unborn child moving around. For the moment they all seemed to be one big happy
family.
Harry pulled the blankets
a little higher to cover himself up. “Sorry. I fell asleep in here last night.”
She didn’t need to know every detail, though she could probably guess. “I’ll be
down in a minute.”
Hermione left so he could
get dressed. He thought about waking Severus, but decided instead to kiss the
sleeping wizard on the cheek before carefully sliding out of bed and pulling
his clothes back on. If everything went well they’d be back by the time Severus
had finished his breakfast.
Harry’s
knees were shaking as they went over the plan one last time. They’d each chosen
their targets they were going to change into. They’d studied each person as
much as they could, with Ron providing most of the information.
Harry grabbed Hermione’s
hand and prayed everything would go off without a hitch. Hermione Apparated them into a dank little alley near the Ministry
entrance. There they ducked into an abandoned theater and waited for the woman
Hermione was going to impersonate to appear.
They stunned the woman as
soon as she appeared and dragged her limp body into the theater, taking her
tokens. The other two “victims” arrived right behind her.
With a quick look around
to make sure no one was watching, the trio made their
way to the new Ministry entrance, which on the outside looked like a public
bathroom. Harry and Ron left Hermione and went into the men’s room, keeping
their heads down and avoiding everyone else. When it was their turn they
entered one of the stalls and closed the door. “This is ridiculous,” Harry
mumbled under his breath, climbing into the toilet with Ron. It was the
silliest he’d ever felt.
He fished a token out of
his pocket and dropped it into the slot and flushed. They were both sucked down
and into the Atrium. Harry couldn’t believe how much the place had changed. There
was still a statue in the fountain, but now it was of a witch and wizard
sitting on a throne. Harry was even more disgusted when he noticed the two
thrones were made up of naked men, women, and children. “Muggles
in their rightful place,” Hermione mumbled in his ear when she caught up to
them. “Come on, let’s get this over with.”
“Cattermole!” a man
shouted and made his way through the crowd toward them. “My office is still
raining.”
Ron glanced over quickly
at Hermione with a panicked look. “Yeah, sorry. I’ll
get right on that.”
“You’d better,” the
wizard sneered. “I would have thought it’d be done before your wife’s trial,
seeing as how I’ll be the one questioning her,” the wizard threatened, and he stormed
off.
“I don’t think we picked
a very good day to do this,” Harry frowned.
“We don’t have much choice
now,” Hermione answered. The three of them shuffled along, following the flow
of the crowd toward the lifts. “Looks like we’re going to
need to split up so you can go fix his office.”
“But I don’t know how!”
Ron protested.
Hermione explained it to
him the best she could in the time it took for the lift to reach the floor where
the Magical Law Enforcement offices were. Ron still
looked rather confused as he squeezed his way out. “I wonder if I should’ve
gone with him,” Hermione sighed when the lift reached the first floor.
Harry, his jaw clenched
at the sight of Umbridge standing there with a
clipboard in her hand. “Mafalda!” The wretched toad
smiled sweetly at Hermione. “I see you were able to tear yourself away after
all. I was just on my way down.”
Everything inside Harry
wanted to attack Umbridge right then and there, but
he stepped out of the lift without a word and looked for a deserted office to
duck into. It was beginning to sink in how foolish this plan of theirs really
was. There was no real way to be sure the locket was even here, and now they
were separated in this massive place.
Once he was out of sight
he threw on his invisibility cloak, crouching down so all of his larger-than-usual
form was covered. Umbridge’s office had to be on this
floor. He wandered around looking for it until he ran into a few witches and
wizards putting pamphlets together in a sort of magical assembly line. Harry
snatched one out of the air to look at it and saw that it was about the dangers
Muggleborns posed to wizards. Remus
hadn’t been exaggerating.
Umbridge’s
office was in the corner behind the witches and wizards. They were busy enough that
Harry hoped they wouldn’t notice him sneaking in. He opened the door just a
crack and slipped inside. The cozy office looked almost exactly like the one
she had occupied at Hogwarts: pink walls with pictures of cats everywhere.
He searched her cabinets
and drawers but didn’t find anything but files on Muggleborns
and Undesirables. Apparently he was Undesirable No. 1. It didn’t surprise him
in the least. He put everything back where he’d found it and pulled out the
small vial of red liquid Severus had given him. He didn’t know much about the
potion, just that it was payback. Harry was pretty sure he didn’t want to know
any more than that; he’d had to promise to be extremely careful with the
contents, and he’d been given an antidote he was to drink immediately should he
start feeling drowsy or nauseous.
There was a cotton swab
already in the bottle, so all Harry had to do was pull it out and spread it on
objects Umbridge would touch. He put some on her
quills and the armrest of her chair. The rest he dumped into the half-full
teapot sitting on her desk. The liquid blended right into her pink tea and gave
the room a nice earthy scent.
Suddenly the door opened
and Harry had to duck quickly under the desk. Pius Thicknesse,
the new Minister of Magic, came in and grabbed one of Umbridge’s
quills and scribbled a note to her. Harry waited for something to happen,
because Severus had said skin contact with the potion would be sufficient, but
all the dark-haired man did was yawn as he left. Harry felt kind of bad because
Thicknesse was supposedly under the Imperius, but there wasn’t much he could do about it now.
Since the locket was not
in Umbridge’s office, Harry decided to go find
Hermione in the courtrooms. He slipped out of Umbridge’s
office as easily as he had entered, with no one seeming to notice, and his good
luck continued as he entered one of the lifts. When he stepped off the lift an
icy chill ran through him, and it was then that he realized Dementors
were roaming around.
The interrogation of Mrs.
Cattermole had just started when Harry quietly entered the courtroom. There
were Dementors in there, too, but a cat Patronus guarded the interrogators. Harry took a seat
behind Hermione, who looked rather shaken by the whole experience. He leaned in
close and whispered, “It’s me.”
She jumped a little, but
no one else in the room took notice. Harry felt sick as he watched the interrogation.
Umbridge came right out and asked Mrs. Cattermole who
she had stolen her wand from. Mrs. Cattermole answered that she had bought it, not
stolen it from anyone. Umbridge refused to accept
that answer and threatened to torture her. When Umbridge
leaned forward to try and seem more intimidating, a silver locket dangled from
her neck.
Harry couldn’t take it
anymore. He shook off his cloak and sent a Stunner that hit Umbridge
square in the back, causing her body to go limp and hang over the edge of the
desk. Hermione reacted quickly, stunning the large blond wizard who had
threatened Ron earlier.
With Umbridge
temporarily out of commission the cat Patronus disappeared,
and once it was no longer guarding the interrogators, the Dementors
moved in. Harry let out a little shiver but recovered quickly and conjured his
stag Patronus. Mrs. Cattermole stared at them,
dumbstruck. “What—what’s going on?”
Hermione approached the
chair the woman was strapped to and undid her bonds. “You’ve been cleared of all
charges,” Harry stated, ripping the locket from Umbridge’s
neck. “But we feel it’s best that you and your family leave the country,” he
added. “Follow me.”
“Oh, thank you, Albert!”
she cried, and she followed him out into the hall, where other Muggleborns were waiting for their fate to be decided.
“You’re all being
released, but you have to leave the country immediately. Everyone follow me.” Harry
ushered the small group onto the lift, hoping they’d be able to find Ron before
anyone realized what was going on.
As luck would have it, Ron
entered the lift at another stop on their way up. He was completely soaked. “Reg, they’re letting me go!” Mrs. Cattermole smiled and
threw her arms around him.
“Brilliant,” was all Ron
could think to say. His whole body stiffened with embarrassment at her embrace.
“But we have to leave the
country right away,” Mrs. Cattermole said anxiously.
Ron nodded and stepped
out into the Atrium with her. “You go on, then. I have some things I have to do
first,” he said, moving with the group toward the exit.
They had almost made it
out when the three Ministry employees they were impersonating appeared. Mrs.
Cattermole stopped in her tracks, looking even more confused than before. “Reg?” Her gaze swung back and
forth between Ron and her real husband.
Then the blond wizard
from the courtroom burst out of the lift. “Intruders!” he shouted. “Seal the
exits!”
Wizards crowded around
the little group, wands drawn, as others scrambled to close off the exits. Hermione
reached into her pocket and pulled out a bottle of deep purple potion. Without
delay she threw it down and it smashed on the floor. The room was instantly
filled with a noxious-smelling black smoke. Harry, Hermione, and Ron covered
their noses with their sleeves and raced toward the last open exit.
Harry felt Hermione grab
his arm the moment they were back in the alley, and he was suddenly dragged
into crushing darkness. Just when it felt like he was going to suffocate, his
feet finally touched concrete and the door of Grimmauld
Place began to appear.
He cried out when
Hermione’s hand pulled him backward and he lost his balance. Several jets of
light shot past them and then the door solidified and they scrambled inside. Severus
was waiting for them, and he sealed the door behind them.
“I’m sorry.” Hermione bit
her lip. “That blond wizard caught me just as I Apparated
us. I couldn’t shake him.”
“He saw the door, didn’t
he?” Harry asked, his heart sinking.
“I tried to shove him
off, but I think so.”
“We need to get out of
here.” Severus ushered them toward the staircase. “Don’t worry. I had
everything packed, just in case.”
“But how are we going to
get out?” Harry asked. “There are Death Eaters swarming around out there.”
“Just go up to Sirius’
bedroom,” Severus ordered, panting heavily. They could already hear pounding on
the front door. The four of them entered the bedroom and Severus shut the door
behind them. He had to lean against the bedpost to catch his breath. “Go to the
window and open it,” he instructed.
Harry felt a little
uneasy about it all, but he did as he was told. The window in Sirius’ room
looked out into the alley behind the house, which was thankfully Death
Eater-free. Severus grabbed the blanket off the bed and motioned for them to
all grab it. “Get up on the windowsill.”
Harry half wondered if
Severus was losing mind, but he and his friends crowded onto the little
windowsill, still holding the blanket. “Hold on tight to that,” Severus said,
grabbing the end himself. “Don’t let go, no matter what.” Harry looked down but
he didn’t see how they were going to climb down. And even if they did, where would
go?
Severus pressed in behind
them, and Harry yelped in surprised when he was pushed out of the window. He’d
only been in the air a second or two when the blanket in his hand jerked
suddenly. Remembering Severus’ words, he clung on tightly. In the next moment
he was enveloped in darkness.
The next thing Harry
knew, it felt like he was lying on a patch of grass with sticks or something poking
him in the back. He opened his eyes and was greeted by the sight of a thin
canopy of tree branches overhead. He sat up when he heard Hermione cry out. Ron
was only a few feet away, but his severed arm was lying at Severus’ feet. “Your
trust in me is touching,” Severus grumbled.
“You didn’t exactly
explain what you were going to do,” Hermione argued, digging frantically in her
bag. She came up with a brown potion that she poured on Ron’s shoulder to stop
the bleeding. It made a sizzling noise and the wound healed, but Ron still lay
there motionless.
“There wasn’t time,”
Severus shot back. He picked up the arm and knelt down beside Ron. With a few
motions of his wand he reattached the arm. Ron groaned and opened his eyes,
slowly sitting up and moving his fingers, seeming surprised that he still
could.
“Where are we, anyway?”
Harry asked.
“The other side of the
Dark Forest,” Severus answered. “Don’t worry, we
aren’t close enough to Hogwarts to be in any danger. But since we obviously
can’t stay in Grimmauld Place any more, I thought
we’d move to my new home. This is as close as we’re going to get by Apparating. We’ll have to walk the rest of the way.”
